Ings back with a bang as clean sheet drought continues for Burnley

Our report of the early kick-off at St Mary’s gets our review of Sunday’s football underway, with Scout Notes on the day’s other matches to follow on Monday.

You can find a brief summary of Newcastle v Spurs, Man Utd v Brighton and Aston Villa v Fulham towards the bottom of this piece.

SOUTHAMPTON 3-2 BURNLEY

  • Goals: Stuart Armstrong (£5.5m), Danny Ings (£8.4m), Nathan Redmond (£6.4m) | Chris Wood (£6.2m), Matej Vydra (£4.8m)
  • Assists: Ings, Redmond, Theo Walcott (£5.8m) | Erik Pieters (£4.3m), Wood
  • Bonus: Redmond x3, Ings x2, Wood x1

Ings and roundabouts

Danny Ings (£8.4m) made a blistering return to Premier League action following an injury that sidelined him in Double Gameweek 27.

Having conceded twice to Burnley inside 30 minutes, Ings’ flicked assist for Stuart Armstrong (£5.5m) saw Southampton halve the deficit.

The striker then capitalised on Ben Mee‘s (£4.9m) failure to clear a faint Nathan Redmond (£6.4m) flick-on to charge through on goal, coolly slotting past Nick Pope (£5.5m) from a tight angle.

“It was a nice goal. I was pressing Ben Mee, he was caught off balance and I managed to steal the ball and have the composure to put it through Pope’s legs.

“Every player wants to play every week and this season’s been interrupted for a lot of people but to be back out there today, I enjoyed it.” – Danny Ings

Two attacking returns matched what he had done in his previous 13 outings, so it remains to be seen if this marks the start of a purple patch or is merely a false dawn.

Shoot on sight

Southampton totalled 24 shots against the Clarets, with Sean Dyche’s side very susceptible to counter-attacks – particularly in the second half.

“A difficult start for us, and normally an opponent that is not helpful if you go two down.

“I’m very happy to see things we were working on over the last two weeks – our decision-making in the final third was fantastic.

“We could have scored five or six or more goals against a team that doesn’t normally give you many chances.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl

Ings was involved again in the Saints’ third, with his shot from the edge of the box palmed by Pope into the path of Theo Walcott (£5.8m).

His cross to the back post set up the out-of-position Redmond – who was playing up top again after a starring role in the FA Cup a fortnight ago – for a thunderous volley to put Southampton ahead for the first time in the match after 66 minutes.

On Burnley’s issues in defence, centre-back James Tarkowski reckoned:

It’s very unlike us, that. Our record of going ahead and getting a win or at least a draw is one of the best in the league, so to go 2-0 up, very comfortable, it was mental sloppiness from everyone really.

There was a minor mistake from Ben, which never happens, then it’s back to 2-2 and it could be anyone’s. Overall very disappointed to concede three goals, that’s very unlike us.

We’ve been in a good place recently. To go 2-0 up and be cruising and then lose the game, very disappointed. But we’ll bounce back. We can’t be naive enough in this league to think the game is over when we’re 2-0 up. These are very good sides with great players. It’s not something we’ve done very often but we’ll move on.

It’s now just four clean sheets in the last 18 matches for the Clarets, which is uncharacteristic of a defence that we have come to rely on for shut-outs over the past few years.

Wood work

Chris Wood (£6.2m) also bagged two attacking returns at St. Mary’s, courtesy of a penalty and a headed flick-on for a Matej Vydra (£4.8m) strike.

That made it four attacking returns in three outings for the Kiwi, while his cut-price Czech strike partner himself has two goals and an assist in his last four appearances.

Vydra, the cheapest starting forward of Gameweek 30, is certainly establishing himself as a budget strike option for Fantasy managers who are playing a midfield five to consider.

Wood caused Southampton’s defence plenty of problems, though he let the Saints off the hook late on when heading a ball straight at Fraser Forster (£4.0m) from yards out.

Hasenhuttl rolls Dyche

It was only a second win in 13 matches for Southampton, whose lack of form has left their assets on the Fantasy scrapheap.

Hasenhuttl said after full-time:

It was a deserved win. We tried to keep the tempo very high and stretch them all the time and it worked. We have belief in what we are doing and I think you grab the chance when you get it.

It was important to make the equaliser before half-time. Then you are in a better position mentally to keep on going. I don’t know a lot of teams who turned it aournd like we did, so it’s a massive boost.

It was a six-pointer today. To turn the tables around is amazing for us and I think the guys did a good job today.

Southampton are still unlikely to be on the FPL transfer radar ahead of Gameweek 31, considering the Saints blank in Gameweek 33.

Fraser Forster (£4.0m), however, could be a viable back-up goalkeeping option for those using their Wildcard ahead of Gameweek 31 – this was his fifth start in the last six games in all competitions for the south coast side.

Hasenhuttl’s team also have a yet-to-be arranged fixture against Crystal Palace to play before the end of the season.

Southampton XI (4-2-2-2): Forster; Bertrand, Vestergaard, Bednarek, Walker-Peters; Ward-Prowse, Diallo; Walcott (Djenepo 86′) , Armstrong (Salisu 78′); Ings (Adams 85′), Redmond.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Pope; Pieters (Taylor 32′), Mee, Tarkowski, Lowton; McNeil, Westwood, Brownhill, Gudmundsson (Richardson 89′); Wood, Vydra (Rodriguez 77′).

ELSEWHERE IN SUNDAY’S GAMEWEEK 30 ACTION…

The reason for Grealish's absence as Mitrovic is recalled for Villa v Fulham

Harry Kane (£11.6m) passed the 200-point mark in FPL for the fourth time in his career, notching his 31st and 32nd attacking returns of the season in Sunday’s two-all draw with Newcastle United.

In only one of his previous seasons as a Premier League player has he registered more goals and assists combined – and he has another eight matches in which to break his existing record of 36, set in 2016/17.

Two-goal Kane was again paired with Carlos Vinicius (£6.9m) in attack at St James’ Park, with Gareth Bale (£9.5m) and Son Heung-min (£9.4m) reduced to substitute appearances and each producing the dreaded ‘one-pointer’.

While Son, who was thrown on at half-time, was just back from injury and can surely expect a swift return to the starting XI in Gameweek 31, the prospects look bleaker for Bale, who it’s difficult to see Jose Mourinho trusting against Manchester United’s dynamic left flank.

And rather disconcertingly for FPL managers who are considering Spurs defenders in Double Gameweek 32, they allowed Newcastle over four ‘expected goals’ (xG) on Sunday – that’s the highest xG total that the Magpies have managed in a match since this data was first recorded in 2013.

Steve Bruce’s previously anaemic side even did it without the still-missing Callum Wilson (£6.5m), with Joelinton (£5.7m) and Joe Willock (£4.7m) on target and Dwight Gayle (£5.9m) spurning two sitters in quick succession.

Jack Grealish (£7.5m) was once again missing as Aston Villa fought back from a goal down to beat Fulham 3-1.

Dean Smith revealed that the Villa talisman had suffered a setback in training on Saturday and wasn’t risked, with further assessment on his niggling shin issue to follow this week.

Villa had scored only three goals in the six matches that Grealish had missed prior to Sunday and for long periods of the game they were just as limp in attack, not registering a shot on target until the 74th minute.

A three-goal salvo and a Fulham capitulation in a ten-minute spell swung the contest, with substitute Trezeguet (£5.2m) on target twice – his first goals of a profligate season – and Ollie Watkins (£6.6m) ending a seven-match goal drought with a tap-in.

Fulham’s defence, so impressive in the middle third of the campaign and offering FPL managers some budget gems, has now worryingly shipped eight goals in their last three outings.

At the other end, a cut-price Aleksandar Mitrovic (£5.5m) might be about to embark on a run of starts: he pounced on a loose Tyrone Mings (£5.4m) pass to coolly put Fulham ahead before their late collapse.

Ademola Lookman (£5.1m) will have a hamstring injury assessed this week after limping off just after half-time.

After news broke ahead of Sunday’s win over Brighton and Hove Albion that Anthony Martial (£8.6m) could be out for the season, Manchester United were left with another injury concern when Marcus Rashford (£9.5m) limped out of the encounter with Graham Potter’s Seagulls.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said only that the injury will need assessing but we should at least have a bonus update in the form of Wednesday’s pre-Europa League presser.

Rashford had stroked United level against Albion with his sixth attacking return in nine appearances, with Mason Greenwood (£7.0m) popping up with a late winner.

Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m) claimed the assist for Rashford’s strike to keep his league-leading FPL points tally ticking over but non-owners (and non-captainers, given his ‘effective ownership’) would have been fairly satisfied with the latest modest return; the Portuguese schemer hasn’t scored from open play since Gameweek 24.

Danny Welbeck (£5.5m) ruined the clean sheets of Luke Shaw (£5.3m) and co, popping up with his third attacking return in as many Gameweeks.

Despite only starting 10 league matches in 2020/21, the budget FPL forward has quietly contributed four goals and three assists to the Albion cause.

For exact money I can WC to this lot:

    Mendy
    Cresswell Shaw Rudiger
    Salah Bruno Son Jota
    Kane Vardy Nacho

    Raphinha Coady Phillips

It means going without Lloris for GW32, but I think the strength in attack will more than make up for it. Anything you'd change?

The way this season has gone the Everton game will be a 1-0 CS and the Southampton game will be a 3-2 or something. Although Lloris is nailed, don’t see the value at 5.6 or whatever he is

How is this for a WC, mates?

    Schmeichel Forster
    TAA, Rudiger, Stones*, Coady, Holding
    Salah, Son, Jota, Gundo, Neto
    Kane, Vardy, Vydra

    Notes:
I still have Bruno in my team as I got him for 10.5 early on. However Im ready to sacrifice him in order to get Vardy upfront. Hopefully Gundo will pick some pts instead of Bruno.

Stones can and probably will be switched to Shaw

Im betting that Liverpool wont rotate so much and will have stamina to play 2 games every week, which is risky...

    Anything else you would change?

    Thoughts on this WC?

    Lloris Forster
    TAA Rudiger Shaw Coady Veltman
    Salah Son Jota Mahrez Saka
    Kane Iheanacho Antonio

Mahrez would be for a week or 2 only, Maddison or Grealish will come in his place (depends on DGW announcements and whether Mahrez gets minutes during UCL this week)

Lloris is only for the DGW, will become Fabianski in GW 33

I fully understand that planning a GK transfer isnt ideal but with the squad it plans out thats probably the best use of my transfers since I dont want to remove anyone until around GW 35 anyway

Looks pretty good to me honestly, not too much to fault. Good mix of punts and nailed on starters, guess Veltman could be Holding for a little extra pocket change but not much stands out as being red flags

Yeah you’re right, he’s had surgery and should be back in ‘upcoming weeks’ so guess you don’t want to have to book for another transfer soon. You’ll need 5 nailed defenders in case of rotation to your latter 3 mids which you have. Guess only other big change you could make is say drop Saka to ESR or something and upgrade elsewhere/ leave money itb to go with the extra money you’ll have for the Lloris to Fabi move move guess that could mess up your teams balance and mean you’d have to make moves before 35 which you don’t want to do

          1. Alisson WondHaaland
            • 8 Years

ESR is interesting, I dont see him as good of a point scorer as Saka but I guess he is dirt cheap. Might try and see what I can do with that in mind.

            Cheers for the advice

Sorry for lack of grammar before, just reread it then haha. But yeah, ESR won’t be a source for consistent points like Saka is (when he starts) but he could open more avenues. Food for thought

Wouldn't bother with Lloris one bit

Southampton and Everton both have goals in them - the goals from Newcastle were far from against the run of play yesterday. Put another way I wouldn't expect Lloris to be the best gk in 32 and pick the most likely cs that week and you may well do better.

The gk transfer is a minus 4 effectively and so you need Lloris to outperform your regular keeper by more than 4 - that likely means 2 cs or loads of save points.

Looks pretty good. Id say there isnt a need to start with 2 WHU attackers since their fixtures start to get very good later on. Maybe Neto to start with?

Also Vydra/Raph as a 7th attacker isnt ideal for the next few weeks due to the rough fixtures.

I personally think taking Bruno out and spreading the funds out can go a long way but thats just my take

      1. Thomas Magnum
        • 8 Years
        3 years, 21 days ago

That’s what I worry about also with West Ham, their fixtures are good bad good bad then they get good toward the end, only thing keeping me toward them is they have a lot to play for.

Losing Bruno is an interesting shout, have had him since the start so got TV in him but going without him could be a way to catch up on others cause of his high ownership but also a way to drop quickly, will have a little look at the possibilities if I drop him.
Vydra just in there because if price and he gets minutes, not that keen on Raphinha but for nailed on players in that price range it’s hard to find a stand out

      Solid

Slightly threadbare at the back but that could be okay if Rudiger and Dias stay nailed pretty much. And if you lose Son in 35 after SHU then you should be able to upgrade elsewhere.

Because he’s not nailed, and Spurs don’t keep clean sheets. He looks like he can haul when he plays cause he gets forward but will just troll you and get 2 points

Feel people saying you need to have a rethink on what "differential" can mean

I see people touting alternatives again the best players we have...
    Rashford over Fernandes
    Jota over Salah
    Mahrez over KDB

The differential move is to have Fernandes, Salah and KDB, not pick others to cover points

Only 0.87% of players currently have that combination. That is the differential!!

(Although I do love Jota as a pick)

Suggested this a week or so back but....

Not especially fascinated by differentials here just picking players on form. KdB and Mo have shown sparks of promise but on form they are properly valued in the 7-0 range and that dates back to GW15 or so. The smart move then was to move Mo on to Rashford if you wanted points.

The best players are those who actually return and not those who cost the most?

Chelsea are short of options with Silva suspended. I’d imagine it was a “heat of the moment” incident, and they’ll have both calmed down by the next match. If not, would you want put Rudiger on the one place he’s guaranteed to see Kepa on matchday: the bench?

Cheaper and on form and getting the best chances

Vardy has very poor GI in last 10 and more. Leicester attack no longer revolves around him it seems. He's just one cog in the wheel now

I've managed to squeeze in Vardy and TAA on my WC with a light bench. I'm thinking I'd have to have 2 no-shows to be in trouble; it'll probably happen but with this 11 I think I'd be unlucky for it to occur more than once or twice, cameos are more likely.

What do you think, does the starting 11 justify the bench, could I survive with it?

    Mendy
    TAA Shaw Rudiger
    Salah Bruno Son Jota
    Kane Vardy Nacho

Pulled it off again - consistent pattern here of being about 15 points ahead of top10k after 3/4 matches with plenty to play only to slide back into the pack.

I need OGS to start giving my team talks.Apparently United are already close to the record of wins from losing positions in a season. Starting to rate him as a manager.

Eying up Greenwood now. Martial out makes him much more attractive. Definitely has goals in him.

You definitely on WC now then Holmes?

Seeing Newcastle and WBA wake up would push me slightly to holding back another week. Also I thought Leicester looked poor even given that it was City. Thinking that one more week's information could be worth it. Liverpool sank without trace after pulverising WH in their last compelling performance.

Yeah, I think I'm going to delay for one more week. Would like to see lil bit more of Maddison and other players. Have to take on chin if Trent and Jota gets big score since they are main WC targets.

            Really tight call

TAA and Jota both look plum. Villa are also looking ever more dodgy at the back to me. Now in a slight quandary here whether to sell Konsa or Dallas for TAA despite likely needing one of them for 33.

            1. Holmes
              • 10 Years
              3 years, 21 days ago

If its for GW33 only, then keeping Konsa makes sense. Season end fixtures looks better for Dallas.

I'll almost certainly hold Konsa in the end

Still have Stones and no particular intention to move him on and with a strong front 7 I'm unlikely to want to play my fifth defender much at all beyond 33 and a potential DGW.

With Ederson I'm going to be on a very unfashionable double City defence when Stones does get games. Doesn't feel a poor play to me 🙂

          🙂

Do think he could be an excellent punt. Fixtures are a bit mixed but United do have goals in them and he has a great eye for goal. I can see both Leicester and WH possibly going backwards as things tighten up and if you're not intending a transfer in that position he could possibly work better than Maddison or Lingard if held.

          Off piste but viable?

Son to Greenwood v Leeds for gw33 looks like a decent plan, depends on form though. No way I can fit him into my current draft unless I downgrade my 9th attacker to a 4.5 which isn’t ideal... Don’t want to shoehorn him in for the sake of it

Spurs SHU and Liverpool United in 34 is the wrinkle there

Not sure how you're set up but Kane Son through 34 anyway seems almost unavoidable unless you hokey cokey 33.

Seems to me the likely parameters are

              Mo Bruno Son Jota xxx
Bruno Son Jota xxx xxx (Son to Mo in 33 and then back in 34)
              Mo Bruno Son xxx xxx
