Rodríguez offers home FPL promise with goal on injury return

Everton 1-1 Crystal Palace

  • Goals: James Rodríguez (£7.7m) | Michy Batshuayi (£5.7m)
  • Assists: Seamus Coleman (£4.8m) | Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.3m)
  • Bonus points: Rodríguez x3, Coleman x2, Batshuayi x1

RODRÍGUEZ RETURNS

Monday-night goalscorer James Rodríguez‘s (£7.7m) return from injury could be the catalyst Everton need to solve their problems at home this season.

The Colombian international was a standout star as Crystal Palace held the Toffees to a 1-1 draw in Gameweek 30, although his colleagues failed to live up to his level of performance.

Everton now have just one win at Goodison Park in their last eight Premier League matches there and, after winning four from a possible seven before that, Carlo Ancelotti’s men have drawn twice and lost five home outings.

However, in a rather strange paradox, Goodison Park has been the scene of Rodríguez’s best performances this season, which implies Fantasy Premier League managers could get value for money between now and Gameweek 38.

Not including Fantasy assists, he has been involved in 12 goals in 14 home matches in all competitions since joining Everton. In the league, he has produced five goals and three assists at Goodison, working out at 0.7 per game.

It must be said that Everton’s latest home disappointment was not without persistence on their part, arguably more encouraging than if they were failing to create chances.

Against Palace, they mustered 15 shots, their second-highest tally in a league match this season, behind only their 5-2 win over West Bromwich Albion in Gameweek 2 (17).

Crucially, on the Fantasy Football Scout Season Ticker, Everton rank inside the top six for fixtures over the next seven matches.

During that period, they host Spurs, Aston Villa, Sheffield United and Wolves, four teams who have struggled for clean sheets of late and could allow Rodríguez to continue his notable home form.

That’s provided the Colombian international can stay fit, of course, having missed two significant chunks of the 2020/21 campaign and only just returning from his most recent absence on Monday.

Still, Ancelotti appears to be on top of managing that issue. Long-term absentee Jean-Philippe Gbamin (£5.0m) replaced Rodríguez in the 79th minute in Gameweek 30 to allow him some rest.

“Gbamin is here for at least two years. He has a strong desire to play. I have a strong possibility to give him minutes.” – Carlo Ancelotti

Meanwhile, potential Rodríguez punters should remember Everton’s run-in also includes trips to Brighton, Arsenal, West Ham and Manchester City. And, it must be said, the former Real Madrid man has offered little in the way of Fantasy returns on the road this season with one goal and one assist in eight such appearances.

RICHY RICH

With a sizeable backing behind Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.6m) in Gameweek 30, it was his strike partner Richarlison (£8.0m) who dominated the shot count on Monday night.

The return of Rodríguez had suggested Everton might play a front-three like earlier in the season, with the Colombian flanking a spearheading Calvert-Lewin on the opposite flank to Richarlison.

However, against Crystal Palace, Rodríguez sat in a number 10 role behind a more traditional two-man strike-force, a set-up that has traditionally favoured Richarlison, and not Calvert-Lewin, in terms of volume of shots.

In the sixth minute, a Luka Milivojevic (£5.6m) mistake allowed André Gomes (£5.3m) to slide the Brazilian in rather than Calvert-Lewin.

In the 20th minute, Seamus Coleman‘s (£4.8m) cross was too high for Calvert-Lewin before Richarlison nodded over.

The former Watford man burst through the middle again just two minutes later only for Vicente Guaita (£4.8m) to make two smart saves.

Prior to nodding over a Rodríguez free-kick, Richarlison also weighed heavily into a debate over who would strike a 39th-minute direct dead-ball opportunity, holding off interest from Lucas Digne (£6.2m), Gylfi Sigurdsson (£6.8m) and Rodríguez – although he put his effort over the bar.

And in the closing stages, Richarlison forced a low, stretched save from Guaita.

Whether or not his persistence can turn into attacking returns in the coming Gameweeks remains to be seen, although Richarlison remains Everton’s third-highest points-scorer this season, his tally of 96 behind only Calvert-Lewin (138) and Michael Keane (100).

STICKY TOFFEES

Interest in Everton defenders is expected to deteriorate, especially with a host of Wildcard squads expected to appear after the Gameweek 31 deadline.

With matches against West Bromwich Albion, Burnley and Crystal Palace on offer, Digne earned 250,000 new owners after Gameweek 25 but he has largely failed to deliver on his price tag.

In their last four matches, Everton have conceded four goals and registered just one clean sheet. Upcoming meeting with Spurs (Gameweek 32) and Arsenal (Gameweek 33) will hardly inspire confidence in a buck to that trend.

On the injury front, Alex Iwobi (£5.9m) and Allan (£5.2m) missed out with minor knocks while Gomes was forced off with a hamstring problem during the first half.

“We had a little problem in the last few days with Iwobi and Allan. Not a big deal but they are not able to play.” – Carlo Ancelotti

Everton XI (3-4-1-2): Olsen; Holgate, Mina, Keane; Digne, A Gomes (Sigurdsson 31′), T Davies, Coleman (Godfrey 76′); Rodríguez (Gbamin 79′); Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin.

Crystal Palace XI (4-4-2): Guaita; van Aanholt, Cahill, Kouyaté, J Ward; Eze, Riedewald (Schlupp 68′), Milivojevic, Ayew (Batshuayi 84′); Zaha, Benteke (Mateta 77′).

Not sure that the so called fixture swing for Chelsea is that appealing. Leicester’s seem better so maybe Schmeicel over Mendy in those wildcards?

Why is it suddenly not appealing? The recency bias after Chelsea's one loss is staggering. Goalkeeper is a 'for the rest of the season' job on WC. Leicester have better next 5 but their last 3 games are awful.

Chelsea have better fixtures than Leicester for the rest, Mendy gets more bonus points than Schmeichel as well.

It's between Mendy, Leno and Martinez imo.

Not really saying that Mendy isn't a good choice and I'm not fooled by one result in what has been a solid defence but still swaying towards Leicester's fixtures

If you roll a FT in 32 you can the have 2FT to change Son out after the double.

Not a fan of the DCL pick, but that's possibly by bitterness at his recent uselessness as a current owner (until the weekend at least as he's gone in all my WC drafts so far)

Same here but am thinking of downgrading Son after the double and changing DCL to Ings.

Yeah exactly, basically gone TAA and Jota instead of Salah.

      Like Greenwood

Have been wondering if there’s any brave enough to go there. Think he’s a good punt - 31 and 34 awkward but scarcely terrible given respective defences

Anyone also reluctant to hit a WC? i have 5-6 players i would like to get rid of but my WC team is not looking so much better, and basically all of the players i would bring in are some kind of rotation risk (nacho, jota,..), and fixtures are generally bad this week for all the top teams bar City, who are rotation hell anyway.

    Current team for GW31
    Pope
    Dias, Digne, Coufal
    Son, Bruno, Lingard, Gundo, Raphinha

Having 2 ft's is a no-brainer for WC hold. Im looking at -4 with Raphinha, Bamford > Jota, Iheanacho (i can sort them out with WC later on if they get constantly benched again)

Can I have your thoughts on this WC.
        Martinez, Leno.
        Dias, Coady, Rudiger, Philip's, Amartey
        Salah, Jota, Son, Lingard, Bruno.
        Lacazette, Kane, Nacho.

Happy with two keepers, had Martinez since GW1 and has a double, Leno great fixtures till the end of season.
Cant decide between Lacca and DCL ( dont want Vardy ) I had Antonio until he went off last night with a suspect Hammy.
        Lingard or Foden ??

Morning. No, I hung fire on the BB. Would have been 11 points Dias, Coufal, Soucek. But I would have took a -4 for Mendy and that would have returned 0. Net gain would be 7pts. So seems for the best. What about Watkins over them? I actually quite like the Laca pick. Fixtures are amazing. DCL seems to do nothing at times. And Jesse for sure!

Overall looks great. Benching headaches for the front 8 each week though.

      Yeah.

West Ham and Burnley rotate really nicely.

You can play this: NEW new wol bur ful LEE/bri wba SOU/shu. Lot of away games but it's good.

So take your pick of Lowton/Taylor and Masuaku/Dawson Or Coufal if you can stretch to 4.6 and 4.4

No WC, only BB, no FT

    Martinez(Ryan)
    Cresswell Stones Veltman(Dallas,Targett)
    Bruno Gundo Son Auba Lingard
    Kane DCL(Bamford)

    Auba=>Jota/Salah
    Bamford=>Iheanacho
    -4
    Its ok?

Considering the Mendy/Alonso/Rudiger triple-up on WC....other defenders are TAA Shaw and Holding.....too many eggs in the Chelsea basket?

My once nailed on WC team has shifted thanks to that Antonio injury...

I'm starting to come round to keeping some future DGW options like Konsa/Watkins.

    Mendy Forster
    Dias Shaw Rudiger Konsa Phillips
    Salah Fernandes Son Jota Gundogan
    Kane Watkins Iheanacho

Konsa and Watkins benched for the next two but they are super nailed on if they have to come on, they have WBA in GW33 when I'll need cover, and they have a DGW saved for the future.

I can't afford Gundogan > Lingard. Well, I could have done it last night, but that 0.2m swing has made it not possible. I think it's fine. I'm gonna sell Son and maybe Gundo as well in GW33 for something like Gundo + Son > Lingard + Maddison.

do not think lingard is essential at all, regression will come just like it did with Gundo no matter how much noise people make so looks good

No-one is essential but when a player is on a purple patch, surely you don't try to be a "smart-arse" and state he is overperforming or start regressing. If you watch his perfomance, he will at least get 1 big chance per game

                No need to be rude...

Lingard is a good pick. Passes the eye test, high motivation, plays in a good team with decent fixtures for the run-in.

I wish I had hot him a few weeks ago.

haha actually he has helped maintain a small red arrow in BGW29 when I effectively had 7 (-4) players and a small green in GW30 when other players in my team didn't perform. Nice to see you have chosen not to put a link to your team in your profile...

To say gundo regressed is a bit harsh, his hauls have dropped a bit, hes getting rotated for cups, but when he plays he is still way outperforming even his current price.

One goal and one assist in last 5 appearances is not over performing - you need to go back 9 matches to first half of GW24 to get overperformance

I know its not fantasy points, but his form is still there.

There are games outside of the epl, and he scored in the cl, and the fa cup game.

Looks great mate. Similar to my draft if I go Phillips over TAA. Quite like Forana @ 5.0 over Konsa. You stick with Dias yeah?

        Sticking with Dias, yes.

The thing with that 5th defender slot is... They will so rarely play that I want them for very specific purposes - Cover in GW33 and a DGW if possible.

If you get Fofana, are you really gonna want to play him over Dias, Rudiger, Shaw or Phillips (my current defense)? I think the answer is no.

Is everyone really benching/selling Raphinha this week? Can see him doing damage against a rotated City, like last time Leeds played them even without Raph in the team

Going into last game of gw, rival holds a slim 10 point lead, I'm thinking should close the gap, maybe even get into 1st place.

      Me) Cresswell & Antonio
      Him) coufal

And he somehow manages to extend his lead by ft lol.

This is obviously a reply fail, but yes, I sold raph, mainly as I wanted jota, and leeds have 3 tough games, and I also own Bamford and didn't want both.

      Quite

Leeds did quite okay in attack in all 3 of the reverse fixtures coming up. Very happy to have him as 5th mid and no real urge to sell someone on his returning streak.

Rank in likelihood of starting on Saturday:

    A) Gundo
    B) Dias
    C) Stones

If Stones starts in UCL, he will be benched for the Leeds game. If Gundo and KDB start in UCL, I think Gundo will start and KDB benched on Sat. I expect Dias to start

Dias will probably be benched for the Leeds game. He played in 3 of Portugal games and the Leicester game. We assume he will start the UCL 2nd leg and FA semi final so if he starts against Leeds then that's like 8 games in 3 weeks.

You could be right, I didn't look past the UCL 2nd leg. If City win comfortably in the 1st leg, he could play Leeds and rested for the 2nd leg

Decent option for fodder, and prob best value in that range, but for me statting mf 5 is way forward, and he's not good enough for that.

So I managed to come up with this team as a W/C which affords me Salah/TAA/Fernandes/Son/Kane without compromising the team as a whole. Also I think Fabio Silva and Wolves Fixtures are well worth the punt

    Leno/Martinez
    Dias Rudiger Shaw TAA Phillips
    Salah Gundo Fernandes Son Lingard
    Fabio Silva Kane Iheanacho
