Sizeable Double Gameweek a possibility if fans return to Premier League matches

Should it get the green light to go ahead, the planned return of fans to Premier League matches could have major repercussions for Fantasy managers.

Providing the United Kingdom government’s four-step roadmap to easing COVID-19 restrictions remains on course, each top-flight club will enjoy one game in front of a predominantly home crowd before the end of 2020/21.

This won’t happen before May 17th and, as things stand, only Gameweek 38 falls after this date.

And so, in order for all 20 Premier League sides to be able to welcome back supporters through their gates, Gameweek 36 and/or 37 will likely have to move.

THE CURRENT SITUATION

The current schedule is fairly serene-looking.

Gameweek 32 will see Tottenham Hotspur play twice, with Crystal Palace blanking.

Gameweek 33 will see Spurs, Manchester City, Southampton and Fulham all blank, thanks to the clash with the EFL Cup final.

Only two previously postponed matches remain outstanding: Southampton v Crystal Palace and Aston Villa v Everton.

WILL GAMEWEEK 36 OR 37 MOVE?

This is where it starts to get complicated.

As it stands, Gameweek 36 is a midweek round of fixtures, with Gameweek 37 scheduled for a weekend.

Above: Gameweeks 35-38 as it stands (graphic courtesy of Legomané)

Martin Ziegler of The Times initially reported that the 36th round of matches would catapult into the free midweek after Gameweek 37.

The Athletic have since suggested that rounds 36 and 37 would each simply shuffle forward a few days, with Gameweek 36 taking place on the weekend of May 15/16 and Gameweek 37 in the following midweek.

DOUBLE GAMEWEEK 35?

SouBur Sunday

Whichever of the above scenarios pans out, a free midweek will suddenly appear after Gameweek 35.

That gap could be used to incorporate Southampton v Palace and Villa v Everton, for starters.

Those two matches could theoretically be absorbed after Gameweeks 33 and 34, of course, but UEFA Champions League and Europa League games fall within those weeks and – generally speaking – the respective competitions tend not to clash.

A BIGGER DOUBLE GAMEWEEK 35…?

It doesn’t end there.

The FA Cup final will involve Chelsea and Leicester City and clashes with – as it stands – the Gameweek 37 fixtures.

If things stay as they are, then any affected Premier League games would very likely move back a few days to the free midweek and still fall within Gameweek 37.

But in any of the two scenarios above involving Gameweek 36/37 shifting, then the postponed league matches would seemingly also have to be swallowed up by Gameweek 35.

And so, up to eight teams could potentially have a Double Gameweek 35 and up to four teams could potentially have a blank in Gameweek 36.

Moderator Legomané has represented the two possible scenarios below in ticker form to give an idea of what Gameweek 35 and beyond could look like.

CHIP STRATEGY

The current world number one answers your questions

Much talk has raged this week of the ‘Wildcard in Gameweek 31’ approach but another Double Gameweek would put the cat amongst the pigeons.

An eight-team Double Gameweek is Bench Boost or Triple Captain territory, with a Wildcard potentially used in Gameweek 34 to plan for it.

The problem is: it’s all theoretical at this stage and subject to change.

Confirmation is still awaited not only from the Premier League shareholders but also the UK government, with any setback in the roadmap to lifting restrictions meaning that the notion of fans returning would be shelved.

Then there are the fixtures themselves, with none of the eight double-headers shown in Legomane’s graphic particularly appealing, other than perhaps Crystal Palace’s.

It’s all (educated) conjecture at this point but, with Friday’s FPL deadline approaching, many Fantasy managers will face a chip-related dilemma or two ahead of Gameweek 31 without knowing the full picture beyond it.

Are people really captaining Salah over the last six home matches, only Palace have created fewer big chances than Liverpool. Sterling it is.

Sold him for Jota on WC. Not that I think he won't do well, even if he's not sharp in front of goal as he can be. A lot of that is down to the ball he is getting and Jota could improve him. I think the money left by selling him gives me better balance and a TAA punt. Anyways my OR is crap so I'll just do my own thing and ultimately oblivion rather than not trying something different.

    Unpopular opinion.

City and Pep always hungry. They will smash almost all teams and KDB will be their top top top points provider.

Bruno will play every match but cant matching KDB in this particular gws.

Salah show some signs but not clinical either. When he should 'chip' the ball, he just strike straight to the GK. Not the best time to invest imo. Not yet. Maybe give him another weeks.

    1. Salan
      • 14 Years
      2 years, 11 months ago

The problem is, yes you may be right they are hungry, but KDB may not start! Now up to the end of season, you have to guess what Pep thinks, and even you guess them right, you cannot change the Man City players every week.

Pep has one goal - the CL. Dortmund should’ve won or drawn game one - no way he doesn’t have a rested KdB for next week. The league is already done.

Which of Cresswell or Stones would you remove this week if you had to choose one of them?

    Shaw, Rudiger, _______, Dallas, Burn.

      Cheers lads. Will consider more.

Got Stones at 4.8m so will be sad to let him go but understand the reasoning regarding rotation especially with my dodgy back ups.

Selling Stones also means no cash ITB as opposed to over 1mil though. West Ham may struggle defensively with Rice out and Cresswell is playing in a back 3 with not great fixtures ahead too making him my current favourite to sella actually.

Is it too risky to go without Salah on WC?

Currently got Salah / Jota & TAA, but this has weakened my bench with 2 non-playing players, I still think you need 2 playing bench with rotation & obviously covid.

Maybe TC in 32. BB last GW. I don't like the BB, never do well with it. Has you in GWs leading up to it thinking a BB about 15 players for a particular GW rather than maxing your 11 and trying to get enough cheaper subs and fodder for more longterm plan.

Looks pretty decent, only problem is you could get up with only 1 forward soon but guess you could do Raz to Son after this week and then use the funds later to upgrade either forward if you need to. Any reason you’re sticking with Alonso? Still have confidence he’ll start enough games?

Yep Raz to Son was the plan and then go from there. Happy to roll out Nacho on his own if I can get 10 others out. I'm annoyingly 0.1 off Azpil so just hoping Alonso get's his share of minutes. Eye test suggests to me he's worth holding for his blanks as he won't sub on and I should get Phillips or Saiss each week.

        1. Thomas Magnum

Could do Saiss to Coady because you know he’ll start and will get you .1 extra. But guess you’ll still be .1 off. Was going to say if you have Rudi already and you’re already taking a punt on Alonso what if you go for Mendy (city) instead but you’re still out of the budget for him. Other than that it looks good to go, some decent punts in there

I would own 3 of those players voluntarily; maybe Mo and Phillips in a pinch. No Dgw advantage and that Def is all subject to heavy rotation. I just don’t see what the appeal is

This comment is exactly why I want this team. Low ownership, risky picks that ppl are steering clear of, which can put in big scores and is perfect for chasing. Not everyone is in the same spot so context for the WC is pretty key imo, rather than just general statements on this being "a terrible week to WC".

Holding my WC until later in the season for a DGW which is not even guaranteed doesn't fit with my situation.

You don’t WC for one week.

But you knew that of course.

And let me add, the pundits pushing this idea relentlessly for the last 4 gwks and all the sheep acting like they have the masterplan is getting a little old.

Some good players there but Stones, Alonso and De Bruyne can be rotated. Swap DB for Bruno maybe and Rashford to Lingard. Popular picks are that because they're getting points. Maybe throw in likes of Ings or Maddison, fresh after injury layoffs and looking to impress Southgate for Euros.

Thanks mate, that was the type of thought provoking comment I was after instead of the unhelpful dribble I just endured for the last 30 minutes!

Ings I hadn't considered, will definitely look at that.

It’s more about the dire squads people are rolling out to “take advantage of fixtures”. What could go wrong? Should have used it earlier imho

Nope, its not like those DGWs are any good. (if it happens)

All depends on the individual, for me I’m happy having Wc’ed this week firstly because I needed to for price changes, and secondly I need to catch up so will use the opportunity to set my side up for the run in. Furthermore, with all the uncertainty over when the double will occur and who’ll have it, it wasn’t worth me waiting around and being stuck with triple Leeds, double Villa, no Kane etc etc

You will be begging for Leeds and Emi back. TV won’t help you anymore

TV not helping me is exactly why I needed to WC so I wouldn’t be priced out of everybody that I wanted. And so be it if that happens, it’s a game at the end of the day. I was sick at looking at the same old players in my side that I have had for weeks and wanted to freshen it up. If I really want them that’s what free transfers are for...

Fair enough, just make sure the chances you take have the ability to cover some of the most efficient assets in the game this year. Proper risk of you ask me

Every team has a different situation and FTs are there to plan and prepare for any DGWs that can happen, so it's silly to make general assumptions like that.

230k OR. Poor season so how is this WC? 0.9m ITB

    Mendy - Forster
    TAA - Shaw - Stones - AC - Holding
    Bruno - Raz - Jota - JLingz - Neto
    Kane - Bamford - Nacho

    1. Lav
      • 7 Years

AC could be Rudi but I am just looking for something slightly different. Dont like Holding. Raz to Son for 32. Bamford fixture proof might as well keep. 2 transfers away from Salah if needed.

Not sure different is worth picking a less nailed over a more nailed option when both have the same ceiling and floor.

Yeah probably will just go Rudi, although AC is nailed for the next match due to TS red. Ideas on who to switch Holding too? Just complete fodder or someone like Coady?

Could just keep Holding, decent fixtures and should play until Luiz is back. Gotta wait to see what Arteta says. Coady is great, fodder is dependent on what the extra funds gets you - keep an eye on 33, with Son/Kane/Fodder you could be left lacking that week.

Neto fixtures. Raz a one week punt because of my OR. Just trying to change something. Ideally want Mahrez but unsure he starts given how much hes played. I know you arent high on Raz

          I love Mahrez this week

Neto always blanks, even in good fixtures. Haven’t looked much at options in that range but have to think there are better options

I am currently settled on this for the WC. Any changes or feedback welcomed!

    Mendy - Forster
    Rudiger – Phillips – Shaw – Holding – Coady
    Lingard – Jota – Bruno – Salah – Son
    Kane – Iheanacho – Bamford

Happy to bench Bam as will play a 3-5-2.

Probably best wc I’ve seen yet

Consider coady upgrade to more attacking potential but he’s a good cs pick
