Two-time FPL champion of India: The players to target for the season run-in

The Fantasy manager with three top 200 overall ranks to his name, Lateriser, picks out the players that we should be considering for the final eight Gameweeks of 2020/21.

The final stretch is here and with this article, I’m going to recommend a few players that you should be looking at – and I’ll be throwing in some statistics along the way.

Looking at the Season Ticker until the end of the campaign, Liverpool seem like the obvious team to target, especially after their result in the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Real Madrid.

I wouldn’t let the fact that they conceded three goals in Spain dissuade me from investing in their defence. There is a huge difference between Real Madrid and the kind of opposition they are about to face in the last eight Gameweeks of the season. In addition, it looks likely that Liverpool are not going to be involved in the Champions League going forward, so there is a considerably lesser risk of rotation in the final quarter of the campaign.

The Reds’ underlying numbers have improved considerably, as well.

What is FPL Upside Chasing and how can I implement it in 2020/21?

Slight smile at the stat that Vardy has created the most big chances. Ignore the SHU fixture and he hasn't created a big chance in the second half half off the season.

My gut is screaming Vardy but the stats lead to Ihenacho

      Not sure what to do

Yeah and West Brom he loves playing against.

Definitely being influenced by prices though.

Thing is he was a stat defier because he had excellent GI (was the Leicester attack pretty much) and took every big chance going. Neither of those seem to apply now. The killer for me is how his GI has slipped. You can't go Vardy as you do with Kane in the firm expectation of getting 50% plus of the GI.

Yeah true - but pure GI (as opposed to Expected GI) is an overlying stat though - its a lagging indicator of goals & assists rather than a leading indicator in that when he’s not scoring or assisting as much, his GI will naturally slip anyways, rather than the other way around

And Nacho has been an absolute revelation - Leciester may even have found Vardy’s heir apparent, he could be a very interesting GW1 pick if he kicks on & takes over from Vardy as Leciester’s GI kingpin going forwards....

But Vardy’s cutting edge definitely has not been as sharp recently as it has been in times gone by - which is why it’s going to be so interesting to see how he fares, or has Father Time finally caught up with him!

A real form is temporary/class is permanent type situation ahead

Way you're talking about him, makes me silly for being worried about Nacho's nailedness for the next few games! Absolutely loved him at City, showed his talent in flashes - would love for him to finally come good.

Got to take the risk. That fixture list is utterly unbelievable and no EL is a boost. A talented striker recording great numbers at 5.7M who'll gobble up BPS just through one goal... sign me up!

        Could come good of course

I suspect though that fixture was about SHU and not Leicester - their captain said anyone could have scored 5 past them that day. Look at GI figures and Vardy involvement is on the slide and has been for a little while. He'd be number 3 on my list.

Is second half of season there from GW15 - GW30? Or from GW20-30?

If it’s GW20-30 he does suffer a bit from not starting 4 games in GW20-23 after the surgery so has only started 7 games in that “second half of the season” sample (6 BC, 4 BCC, but only 1G 4A to show for it)

Either way - he definitely has NOT had his shooting boots on in those 7 games, but how many times have we been here in the past with a Vardy “drought” (either on underlying stats or overlying stats) & then he just goes bonkers for a few games to reset the apple cart!

It’s just a pity he strayed offside & had the goal disallowed against city

        🙂

Go to second half of season GW16 on and he's created 2 more big chances and scored from one of the six big chances he's had

I would love to wrong as I've made my very moderate FPL career by going for Vardy when others look elsewhere in the last 2 seasons and I'm very fond of him. But these figures are really poor.

Either one sees Vardy's lack of finishing as age catching up to him... or believes his consistently excellent finishing across his career will even out and the goals will come, just as the chances do with absolutely outstanding fixtures. I'm in the latter camp.

Hope you're right mate. The other parameter is that he is not exclusively at the pointy end of the Leicester attack nowadays. They are creating chances but they are going the other way - to Iheanacho.

I think he missed starting GW16 as well so there’s probably a period to ignore - GW16-23 he only started 3 of a possible 8 games with the injury...

It’s interesting to see some of the sentiment towards him in recent weeks though - the two pearls of wisdom most frequently being handed out by a few notable forum big-brains are:

          (A) he is too old now
          (B) he doesn’t look right since the injury/surgery

Will be very interesting to see how he fares through the upcoming blue fixture run!

I do think we also have to take into consideration Leicester change in formation with two up top. All previous stats on Vardy are largely based on him being the sole striker.

Very true - that is a bit of a wildcard variable - it certainly hasn’t helped Vardy’s output so far

            For sure

I'm also curious to see how Leicester hold up generally. If they lose to WH then they are right back in the pack of teams that could lose out on CL.

They have a particularly horrid record to Palace over the past 3/4 seasons. Just the past couple of games have gone to form. WBA and Newcastle are perhaps more likely to hold them up this time.

Maximus can I ask for your thoughts on my WC team.

Martinez, Forster. ( keeping Martinez had him from GW1 and my lucky charm, OK fixtures and double GW )
                Dias, TAA, Rudiger, Alonso, Holding.
                Salah, Jota, Son, Bruno, Gundo.
                Kane, Nacho, Vydra.
                0.9ITB
                4-5-1 or 4-4-2

Gundo a one week punt then out for Lingard, and Alonso may become Regulion for 32.

                  Looks great to me Corgzzz

                  - Captaincy covered with Salah, Kane, Bruno
                  - Enough City to take advantage of Leeds this weekend + TAA starting to look ominous for non-owners
                  - Nacho, Jota both looking super value with great fixs

Personally I wouldn’t have punted on Alonso but the upside is definitely there & it could be genius

I also wouldn’t have gone for Holding over a Wolves def - but again, that could be totally the right call as Wolves aren’t solid at the minute

You could look at Fabio Silva from Wolves over Vydra, but they’re both probs more for bench cover so not a big deal at all (and Vydra might be better, cheaper and more sure to start too)

Martinez still has a double, and 9 games to everyone else’s 7 or 8 so a good hold imo

    - Jota, Mount or some other Chelsea/City mid
    - Any City or Arsenal def to consider here

    TAA/X/Shaw/Coufal/4.5

    Mendy Forster
    TAA Shaw Rudiger Fofana Holding
    Salah Jota Son Maddison Lingard
    Kane Iheanacho Watkins

Going for a rotating front 8, Watkins isnt needed until GW 33 but then he has a pretty good run of fixtures with a DGW somewhere so I think he's worth the extra over Welbeck or Vydra

    DCL Bamford* Kane

    Button Konsa Burn Smith Rowe

I'm doing a -8 this week with Martinez, Dias, KDB or Raphinia most likely to go.

Wouldn't do a -8 with that. KdB is a good captain choice.

Can you afford to do Raph to Jota and save the big points hit? Failing that then just do Burn to Phillips.

Even both for -4 is not too bad but don't do a -8

I can't see KDB playing or getting many minutes over the next few league games. Him going frees up a lot of funds too.

I think for the home tie against Leeds, KdB is a great captain choice to have. Get rid before bgw33 by all means if you feel that's the best way to free up funds.

I just don't feel it's a good move for this gameweek and certainly not for a -8

Think your keepers are asking for trouble.

I'm not going to rip this to shreds for not being template but you know Wilson is a huge risk. Dawson is uninspiring as well IMO.

Thanks for the response, no keepers under 5m really inspire me so just went for the one who plays for the best defense.
Dawson just a filler at 4.5 but could be anyone there (albeit also not many options).
Wilson a pure punt but hoping pens and survival means he steps up. Alternative is to downgrade him and play 4-5-1 every week but not sure...

I get what your doing and where your going but at this late stage of the season taking a gamble on a player who is just coming back to fitness playing for a team in shocking form is a no no for me, I would rather get Iheanacho simple due to form and fixtures then upgrade your keepers/Keeper to maybe Leno/Mendy..

Yeah I can defs see what you’re saying, just wish he had some more game time in his legs. I’ll keep tinkering, I could even just downgrade completely like I said above and have 1 striker with Vydra coming off the bench worst case and have a 4.2 as my 3rd forward...

I like the Sanchez pick, its backs the improvement in brightons def stats

WH last two games def stats haven been very bad and with Rice out i wouldnt go near their def. Dawson to Holding or can you stretch him to Christensen/James as chels are still superior in the def stats?

Wilson punt is fine if we hear in the press conference, i'd still want a piece on the leicester attack, no way to get Raph up to Maddo (downgrade Dias might be the route)

Thanks! Defs considering changing Dawson now, he was kind of just there to fill in for now. Will have a play around. Will be sad to lose Dias but may be the only way to go like you said, will make the team look a lot more balanced if I sold him and could push for Leicester mid, alternatively could wait for Barnes to get back and keep Dias until then but who know when that’ll be

i agree with this, i compared the xGI of Evans, Castange and Fofana. While Castagne leads its only marginal so concluded he isnt worth the 0.7 over fofana

I think Torres plays but I do think either Mahrez or Gundo will start too. my guess is that Pep will rest KDB and therefore Gundo more likely to play in his role.

Spurs and Live both have quite good matchups coming, already have Kane, but what do u think, is it time to replace Son with Salah?

Don’t see the point in saying a players team has good fixtures then selling. Is there a way to keep both?

Yes, sent away city defenders and DCL to get Salah, Nacho and some 4.. defenders.

Robertston xGI stats have really fallen off a cliff, are you not going Trent for the sake of being different or are you seeing something I am not?

Unsure on Lowton, Burnley just shipped 3 but i guess will be benched afterwards for fofana

Liverpool's performances are not that convincing, yet they have the fixtures.

    Veltman Dias Azpi
    Odegaard Saka Salah Gundo Lookman
    Kane DCL

    Mccarthy Bamford Dallas Konsa

    1ft 6.4 itb

    a) Wildcard- if so who would you be looking at shipping and bringing in
    b) Lookman > Neto & Gundo > Sterling
    c) Other transfer ideas welcome

For those on wildcard worrying their selections may be too 'template' worth bearing in mind more than 60% of the top 10k have already used the chip.

This is down to 45% overall but if you consider amount of dead teams I suspect this figure is probably representative of all active teams. A large amount of players in some competitive MLs I am in have already used it.

What I'm getting at is that just using the chip will put you at an advantage if you nail it, don't worry that your team looks similar to a lot on here as it's simply not the case that the majority of the game are wildcarding to the same team.

Anyone liking Konsa as a 5th defender on WC? To be honest I can only really see me using him for GW33 which he has a nice fixture and whenever his double is re-arranged to.

Rest of my defense is Rudiger, Shaw, TAA, Fofana

I have 5.0 to spend and others I've been considering are Coady and Coufal but I don't like eithers prospects for clean sheets at the moment.

I like Veltman for 33 only, but Konsa obviously has the advantage of a double down the line. With your defence I think it's a defensible option.

    Thoughts on this? Who`s missing?
    Mendy
    Trent - Dias - Rudiger
Salah - Lingard - Bruno- Raphinha
    Iheanacho - Kane

Bench: Forester, Phillips, Holding, Vydra (wil play this GW ahead of Raphinha)

Really want a Leicester def, like Fofana or Castage. Might ditch Trent for Castagne and go Rudiger til Azpi

its a template and good wildcard, just two considerations i am sure your on top of:

      1. Son for spurs double gameweek, do you have a plan to get or not going to?
      2. I dont hate ditching dias to get in a Leicester def depending what you read is on man city rotation

    Taken from the BBC website:

Since Thomas Tuchel’s first game in charge of Chelsea (27 January), no goalkeeper playing for a top five European league side has kept more clean sheets in all competitions than Edouard Mendy (10).

Mendy seems to me to be the stand out choice for a set and forget keeper

I dont think its safe to 100% assume, Nancho was taken off early last match as maddo returned from injury. This may be down to Nacho travelling with Nigeria over international break tho. Most likely it will be vardy and nacho up top with Maddo behind but rogers does change formation and perez might share minutes here

      • 10 Years

Switch in formation or Perez being preferred over him in some games is an issue, but at the moment, I would expect him to start majority of the games.
