How the top 10k FPL managers set their teams up for Gameweek 31

A significant chunk of the top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers played their Wildcards in Gameweek 31.

26.4% of them pulled the trigger on a new squad ahead of Friday’s deadline, the largest to do so all in one Gameweek since the second Wildcard became available.

As a result, the template of players at this level of the world rankings took a sizeable shift as we prepare for the final Gameweeks of 2020/21.

As you can see, the Wildcard was by far the most-used chip among the top 10k in Gameweek 31.

Just 0.06% went for the Bench Boost, 0.05% Free Hitted and 0.01% played the Triple Captain.

Crucially, the second Wildcard has now been deployed by 87.1% of the top 10k, meaning just 12.9% of them have it left to play between Double Gameweek 32 and Gameweek 38.

It also means that 46.6% of the top 10k have exhausted their chip supply with seven Gameweeks left to go this season.

41.0% have played three of theirs while only 11.2% still have two left to deploy.

Anyone marginally outside the top 10k with a healthy number of chips still intact will certainly fancy their chances of breaking into the upper echelon over the season run-in.

Unsurprisingly, 81.7% of the top 10k’s Wildcarding managers went with budget goalkeeper Fraser Forster (£4.0m) while roughly two-thirds were content with Edouard Mendy (£5.2m) as a set-and-forget option.

With two fixtures to look forward to in Double Gameweek 32, Harry Kane (£11.7m) was the most fashionable player in any position in such squads, selected by 99.5%.

Diogo Jota (£6.9m) was not far behind the Spurs man, convincing 93.9% of the top 10k’s Wildcarding managers to make use of his services between now and Gameweek 38.

84.4% have retained faith in Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m) while 79.7% have gone for Mohamed Salah (£12.4m), which means 36.6% of the entire top 10k are doubled-up on the Egyptian and Jota.

Despite a tough fixture against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon, Son Heung-min (£9.4m) sits in 60.2% of top-10k Wildcard squads while 70.8% of such managers are convinced Jesse Lingard (£6.3m) can still offer value even without Michail Antonio (£6.7m) in the team.

Kelechi Iheanacho (£5.8m) has done enough to convince 88.5% of the top 10k’s Wildcarding managers that he can hold his place in Leicester’s attack and continue his scoring form, currently with five goals across his last three matches.

Antonio Rüdiger (£4.7m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.3m) and Rob Holding (£4.2m) are the three-most popular defenders among top 10k Wildcarders.

It is also interesting to see what impact the Wildcarding managers have had on the overall template among the top 10k, and where they have not.

For example, Patrick Bamford (£6.6m) has clung to 46.9% backing at this level while Iheanacho’s ownership in the entire top 10k is 37.7%.

Likewise, Stuart Dallas (£4.8m) remains the most fashionable defender among the top 10k with the support of 42.7%.

Meanwhile, Jota has managed to become the second-most-popular midfielder at this level.

Salah is the key captain this week having convinced 46.8% of the top 10k to hand him the armband for a home meeting with Aston Villa.

Despite facing a Manchester United side that have become 0-0 specialists in the big games, Kane has earned 13.8% support for the Gameweek 31 captaincy.

The Manchester City options are less popular, even against Leeds, largely due to the uncertainty about who Pep Guardiola will start at the Etihad Stadium.

Just 9.2% have gone for a De Bruyne captaincy while 6.1% selected Raheem Sterling (£11.3m).

Kane and Salah are the two players with more than 100% effective ownership in the top 10k for Gameweek 31.

However, neither one is miles clear, the Spurs forward boasting 111.3% and Salah on 106.1%.

Many players are already bringing inn Salah for next GW with 2 games to play (Villa and Real).
    Is it:
    :
    A) Mandess

    B) Calculated risk

    Rudiger TAA Shaw
Bruno Son Salah (vc) Jota Mount
    Nacho Kane (TC)

    Bench: Cancelo, Veltman, Davis

    Mount to Lingard,
    Cancelo to Regulion
    Cancelo to cheap defender

Very new template so pretty solid ... I don’t like the Reggy pick ... save money with a cheap defender ... quite a few to pick from.

I would monitor Mount for sure with Maddison and Lingard considerations as replacements.

I’m holding mount at the moment and monitoring Mads closely as he returns from injury.

You pretty good to sit tight for another game week .... then two transfers opens your options up even more.

He's done surprisingly well in terms of save points and overall, but you're right their defence lately has been so disappointing. Could be worse, I went with Dier over Lloris the week he was permanently dropped.

          I’m fine thanks mate.

TAA is a great shout. I brought him in this week alongside Jota and Iheanacho. GOt rid of Ayling, Bale and Antonio for a four point hit.

The problem I now have is that I still own 3 City players i.e. Stones, Dias and Gundogan who are subject to rotation.

And have no Chelsea defence nor Lingard.

I will post my team separately in a moment and if/when you have a moment - you can suggest what I should do.

          How’s your team looking anyway??

Great moves mate!!!! I did Grealish and Antonio to Jota and Nacho this week!! Have captained Jota and VC on Nacho!! Ah interesting mate, well I used the blank gameweek 29 to get rid of ALL on my City assets(Dias, Cancelo and Gundo) exactly because of what you say!! Thought I’d try and get a bit of a jump start so took the risk then!! Could backfire massively of course!! Haha
I have Azpila brought him in for his inevitable clean sheet vs West Brom!!.... well all know what happened there!! Haha I’m setup like this..

            Martinez
            Azpila Digne Dunk
            Jota(C) Bruno Son Lingard Raphinha
            Kane Nacho(VC)

Very nice balanced team with a strong bench too. You should be able to finish the season in style. What’s your current rank mate? Mine is 220k but I have my FH chip so am still aiming for a top 50k finish. Might be wishful thinking really.

Digne would have gone in my team but coz I have No WC I’m keeping coz I know he has a double, Salah and TAA probably by 33 will both be in my team then il look to save transfer to have 2 frees for 35/36 for the doubles

That’s a great rank mate!!! You should be able to finish on top 10k if you find some decent differentials.

I strongly considered Trent but ultimately decided against it. I think there's a strong chance Villa/Leeds/United which a 3 of the next 4. No doubt he's got the highest ceiling though could be massive for you. I went with Saiss this week and so far so good. Best of luck to you!

Saiss is a great pick mate!!! And I may end up going for him in the end!! Second in my mini league brought him in this week, and we are a bit cat and mouse at the minute but I have a 36 point lead, so a sensible move for me could be to get Saiss in!!! Best of luck to you too mate!!!

Son + Kane, planning on saving a transfer, but if anyone gets injured maybe I'd punt in Moura.

Getting Jota Salah and TAA should have been done last week, now they're template 🙁

Yeah there's a difference between trent being a template choice on wildcard and actually being part of the top10k template. His EO is 24%, so still low owned and differential for now

Liverpool winning 3-0 wasn’t a likely outcome. Arsenal just sat over the table for them.

This, back to normal Anfield performances against deep lying defense, 0-1 or 0-0

I disagree. Fixtures are awesome they are out of Europe, Jota, Fabihno are back, TAA is back and they have a back 4 again

Oh no I think they will do well with their fixtures but being a captain hindsight over bringing in triple Liverpool before away to Arsenal is a bit pointless.

I strongly considered but had a huge project deadline so didn't have time to properly tinker for it so went safe with just a FT

Didn't take long for the first sucker punch of the gameweek with me starting Areola there, if he stops that at his near post that makes three saves a clean sheet and possibly a bonus point or two. A season of so many small what ifs.

That is unlucky to be fair. Think areola was just surprised, wolves hadn't had hardly any shots all game

In fairness as well I've just now seen the disallowed VAR goal for Wolves, think anyone else with Fulham defenders was incredibly lucky to have a clean sheet to lose in the first place what a ridiculous call

It became pointless to ask for an opinion here. In the past years there was such a good debate and a proper feedback.

We should all be considering going exclusively to Twitter, there at least we get replies.

Most probably no one will respond to this thread which unfortunately will just prove my point 🙁

I miss the Classic FFS days

This is better than Twitter. Twitter is full of trolls, bullying and ganging up on people.

It happened with Reddit FPL as well. It's the huge influx of newer players spamming their RMTs that have diluted everything. I've transitioned this year to just using the member's area here and playing the FPL Family and Blackbox podcasts while I'm cooking. Not as fun as the old banter/DZ days on here, but they are gone sadly.

I like it on here on the quieter days, or basically the times when there’s not a deadline looming, and we just throw questions out there for debate.

I still think there’s a decent sense of community here and good people.

It has its faults - anything does - but it’s nice to share thoughts and compare notes... or occasionally just rant!

It's definitely changed over the years. When I first found the site it was like a special corner of the internet where mature respectable people discussed the game. There was fun banter and genuine productivity. Now the game is filled with a much less respectable crowd and message boards get flooded with crap.

Same here, I don't have Salah or Jota so at least that'll be consolation if Martinez now keeps a clean sheet on my bench

Yeah annoying as sh*t. Ffs are going to have a problem is this is their new plan. Paying customers shouldn't have to have ads, ridiculous.

I’ve got none and peer pressure is going to make me bring in Chelsea GK or defence. I don’t really think their fixtures are that great so am struggling to understand what the fuss is about.

      2. Postman Ty
        • 9 Years

Not convinced about what? One bad game amidst pretty much the best defensive form we've seen from anyone ever. Great fixtures over the next 4. The issue is selection: Mendy doesn't get enough saves for FPL, Azpi is priced high, James/Alonso/Chilwell are all rotation risks, and Silva/Christensen have to be rotation risks now as well. Rudiger is the only solid option imo.

There are plenty of players who have scored more than 98 points so far this season :p
