Havertz and Pulisic hitting form but rotation remains an ongoing issue at Chelsea

Crystal Palace 1-4 Chelsea

  • Goals: Christian Benteke (£5.5m) | Kai Havertz (£8.2m), Christian Pulisic (£8.2m) x2, Kurt Zouma (£5.3m)
  • Assists: Jeffrey Schlupp (£5.3m) | Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.7m), Havertz, Mason Mount (£7.2m), Reece James (£5.0m)
  • Bonus Points: Pulisic x3 Benteke x2 Mount x1

Chelsea made short work of Crystal Palace, with star turns from Kai Havertz (£8.2m) and Christian Pulisic (£8.2m) and another solid shift from Mason Mount (£7.2m).

The victory was a redemption of sorts after Gameweek 30’s 5-2 drubbing by West Brom, and Fantasy managers will have looked upon the attacking intent of Chelsea’s advanced midfielders with interest.

Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft

At the heart of Saturday’s victory was the interplay between Havertz and Pulisic.

The pair have struggled, for various reasons, this season, but coach Thomas Tuchel’s decision to use both in attacking roles paid dividends against Palace.

Havertz was again employed as a false nine, a position he’d been handed for the midweek Champions League win at Porto, with Tuchel’s tactics vindicated at Selhurst Park.

“He needs to be in high positions, either half positions or the number nine position. This is not a big difference for me. He got a second chance to show up after Porto and he did that.”

Not that the coach was unequivocal in his praise:

There is still room to improve in finishing, he can be more ruthless, he should have scored more, but it was a good step and a good performance.

Of the six big chances Havertz has had this season, three came against the Eagles.

He opened the scoring from the first one and should have beaten the over-employed Vicente Guaita (£4.8m) from close range towards the end of an otherwise impressive outing.

As for Pulisic, he started a third straight match under the German for the first time, with the coach talking pre-match about finally finding the right position for the USA international:

I think the half positions in the front three could be a perfect fit for him.

He’s certainly finding some late-season form – three of his four goals this campaign have come over the last two Gameweeks.

Gang Of Four

Two other midfielders shone brightly at Selhurst Park.

Chelsea’s most popular FPL asset, Mount (18.1%), set up a goal – one of two big chances he created on the day – and carried a consistent goal threat, as mentioned in the members section.

That was enough for the England international to pip Havertz to the final bonus point award, and his six-point haul on the day took him back into FPL’s top ten midfielders.

Wing-back Callum Hudson-Odoi (£5.7m) was another to impress.

His assist for Havertz’s opener was one of a match-leading five chances created and he was consistently deployed well in advance of his team-mate on the opposite flank, Ben Chilwell (£5.8m).

Not that either wing-back will attract many more owners as long as Tuchel continues to chop and change his personnel. Hudson-Odoi has started just two of the last seven matches and Chilwell two of four.

The former Leicester full-back’s start at Selhurst Park meant that Marcos Alonso (£5.7m) was only among the substitutes, which was yet another reminder to his owners in FPL that they need a strong playing bench to accommodate his sporadic luxury appearances.

King Kurt

A thumping Christian Benteke (£5.5m) header meant a second straight Gameweek without a clean sheet for a Chelsea defence that had managed four in a row before that. Given that the Belgian’s effort was the Eagles’ only shot of the game, Fantasy bosses will find the latest shut-out loss particularly galling.

But the 7.8% of managers with Kurt Zouma (£5.3m) in their sides had that particular disappointment offset by a fifth goal of the season from their man.

That’s the most by any centre-half, and only Leeds United’s Stuart Dallas (£5.1m) has more (seven) among defenders, although he’s spent chunks of the season in midfield.

It was Zouma’s fourth headed goal of the campaign – the most by a defender – and three have been set up by Mount, as was the case on Saturday.

The Frenchman may not have even played, however, had Andreas Christensen (£4.7m) not missed out with a minor hamstring injury.

Fun Boy Three

Tuchel is already making a name for himself as a tinkerer, but he seems to have found a nice attacking blend in Havertz, Mount and Pulisic.

Chelsea’s run-in is mixed, with visits from Brighton and Fulham to come over the next three Gameweeks, but West Ham, Man City, Arsenal, Leicester and Aston Villa among their last six opponents.

Factor in FA Cup and Champions League duties and second-guessing Tuchel’s line-ups could be the stuff of madness, but that trio at least have the potential to offer a lot of goal threat for players classed as midfielders in FPL.

Palace, meanwhile, spent the first half on Saturday doing a very good impression of a team thinking of post-lockdown beaches.

The one faint glimmer of hope came from Benteke, who scored his second goal in four starts and earned some praise from boss Roy Hodgson:

He’s doing well. He’s certainly working hard. He’s trying to do the sort of things we’re preaching and asking him to do, and it’s very good he’s starting to score some goals. His goalscoring for the last couple of months has been on a regular basis.

Those managers willing to consider Benteke, or any other Hodgson man, should take into account the fact they will face Leicester and Man City after a Blank Gameweek 32.

And although there will be a Double Gameweek (involving Southampton away) after that, they still have to face Liverpool, Arsenal and Aston Villa before the season’s end.

Crystal Palace XI (4-4-2): Guaita; van Aanholt, Kouyaté, Cahill, J Ward; Eze (Schlupp 59), Riedewald (McCarthy 59), Milivojevic, Ayew (Townsend 76); Zaha, Benteke.

Chelsea XI (3-4-3): E Mendy; Rüdiger, Zouma, Azpilicueta; Chilwell, Kovacic (Ziyech 83), Jorginho (Kante 61), Hudson-Odoi (James 76); Pulisic, Mount, Havertz.

Think people are overrating the Leeds fixture and missing out on how Burnley are one of 3 worst defences right now.

How important is Son this GW

My attackers for GW 32 are

    Mount, Bruno, Lingard, Jota
    Lacazette, Kane, Ihenacho

I could do Mount > Son? but i would rather roll a transfer and get Mount > Salah in GW33 for free

    It's a good problem to have, but I can't decide on who to play for gw32. Currently I'm on;

    Mendy
    Shaw, Reguillon, TAA
    Salah, Jota, JLingz, Son, Bruno
    Kane, Iheanacho

    Subs: Forster, Rudiger, Holding, Davis

Is this the right order? Benching Rudiger and Holding at home to Brighton and Fulham feels so wrong!

So after hitting 69 all out last week, I'm up to 11k OR which is officially my best rank to date. I hit my WC button for last week and had a plan to do Gundo > Son for the double, still looking like my best move here? Would leave me with 0.3m in the bank.

    Mendy
    Coady - Trent - Rudiger
    Salah - Gundo - Lingaard - Bruno - Jota
    Kane - Nacho

Bench: Forster - Vydra - Coufal - Veltman

It’s so funny how people keep Salah over “fear of what he may do” when he has barely done anything for how long now and hasn’t had a double digit haul since GW21 yet Jota has outsourced since coming back from injury and can probably out score Salah from the bench. If you can have both then good but if I had to choose it has to be Jota until form changes.

I hope this helps some of the less experienced players. I get to watch every minute in South Africa. They are my views that I consider matters only, so ignore if you wish.
Fulham 0 Wolves 1: As a five at the back Wolves are sound but Fulham are not the best to evaluate form. Traore seems to have a new lease of life, not just for his goal, but general involvement. He was sent out to take advantage of Fulham chasing the game. Neto injury will reduce goal output and playing 4 at the back they are awful.

Citeh 1 Leeds 2: How Leeds got away with this is a miracle. First time this season they changed their attacking approach. 29 shots by Citeh to 2 says a lot. Stones and Fernandinho were the best players. Raphinha is class but went off with an injury and Sterling is way out of form. Dallas may be good but who knows about consistency. Stones a calculated risk to play with Laporte injured.

Hammers 3 Foxes 2: I cannot help but think Hammers will not cope with Antonio, Rice, Cresswell and Ogbonna out. Clean sheets don't expect. A great game to watch and Tielemans made a huge difference coming on in the second half. Iheanacho an obvious pick with price form and fixtures. Vardy, dare I say it, is slightly past his sell by date. Bowen could be a consideration.

Pool 2 Villa 1. Pool woke up in the second half and should have been clear at the break. A lot went through TAA first half and Robbo in the second. Still not convinced of Pool being back to their best, moving the ball too slowly in the early stages. Hard to tell whether Villa bad or Pool good. Phillips at 4.1 great call and spread the cash and take a chance without Salah IMO. Robbo got better second half and could equal TAA returns. 3 pool for sure considering fixtures.

Palace 1 Chelski 4: The most interesting game of the weekend. The absence of Werner allowed Pulisic Havertz and Mount to click. IMO Pulisic is the best player at Chelsea for FPL and he should get more and more minutes. Havertz has the skill and movement but I think him a little fragile for the PL atm. Mount was superb but as a fantasy asset I am not sure. They sacrificed defensive function to be more attacking and I think Alonso has been "found out" by Tuchel. A shame the other cup games will play with rotation because I believe Tuchel has found his best side. Zouma should be part of a back 3 too.

Burnley 1 Newcastle 2; Shame about Newcastle fixtures because there has been a marked improvement recently. ASM and Wilson improve the side immensely. Vydra is a very viable inclusion. He was heavily involved yesterday. Pope is also viable but missed the game through injury. I would consider recategorizing Newcastle to not being a pushover from now on.

Spurs 1 ManU 3: A game of 2 halves. When Spurs scored they parked the bus and United came out of their shell. If I knew Greenwood and Cavani would play each week I would play them over Bruno. Pogba is not really an FPL asset and Shaw for me is the only defender I would consider. The best player in the Spurs side is Moura. Kane and Son remain as good picks but were being forced to play out of position by the ManU onslaught. Decisions need to be made after GW34 on what to do with Spurs assets as they are God awful. Lloris seems a safe pick if you have an alternative for GW32. He does not force a transfer in GW33 like a Regulon etc.

Blades 0 Gunners 3: Hard to work out anything from a bad Blades side. Laca is playing well and if knocked out of the Europa league I would take him over Vardy for sure. Arsenal were short of personnel and they remind me of the French rugby team. Which one will turn up? Great fixtures but I would limit cheap players (Holding/Chambers) if you want Arsenal in your lineup.

Nice mate +1. Agree with pretty much everything there.

I'd only add Newcastle are stil a team to target from an offensive point of view, their switch to back 4 means more positive play and attack but they are much more open at the back. So not necessarily a team to target for a guaranteed clean sheet, they look like they can trouble most teams now, but definitely still a team to target for goals against, I say this as a fan! I'm honestly far happier if we are having games at 2-2, 2-1, 3-2 or whatever, rather than all the boring 0-1, 0-0's etc.

Ruben Dias for me. Never thought Pep would make their backline solid with proper defenders. A good bit early to compare Stones and Dias to the great England and Portugal partnership of Terry and Carvahlo but fair play to Pep to add this dimension to City. Needed to be done to have any chance of lifting big ears.

      Dias I guess over Kane

He plays for the wrong club but Raph would be right up there for me among the also rans - worthy of a mention in the best watch category. He's been consistently the star performer in one the most exciting teams in the league. Hasn't had the end product of course but I'm struggling to think of anonymous performances. Edges out Grealish now perhaps as the pick of the non big team players - if only as he's had an almost complete season.

Dallas first defender on the bench. Need Burn to sit this one out for my 17 pts. Is he gonna burn me, you reckon?

Moder could take Burn's starting spot but Burn could sub in late. I think he started when Burn was injured ad did wel. Scored v England

Did Gundo & Antonio ➡️ Lingard & Nacho for a hit.

      Nice very gtg

Beginning to think DCL might be a shrewd hold looking at the fixture list.

Someone should do a YouTube tutorial on how to get the info you need from different stats sites. I think it would be popular cos most of it is an alien language to me.

I went -8 yesterday out of annoyance. Hopefully no injuries today.

    DCL, Werner, King! & Mahrez
    To
    Kane, Nacho, Watkins & Lingard

Too Salah or not to Salah that is the question.
Would take a -8 of Saka, DCL to Salah, Davis
    Not sure about it though.

I’m gonna have to choose between Salah or Son. I’ve got Jota and Kane but I think it has to be Son. Salah still not justifying his price. Tap in goal and couldn’t finish his 1 on 1

    Long Term

    A) Salah
    B) Jota

    1. Paqueta Rice

Jota I think. I have both

I have both aswell, alongside Son, Maddy & Bruno.

Want to bring Lingard in but reluctant to swap out Maddy as they have some tasty fixtures coming up.

Was considering Jota out Lingard In, but may lose Salah and bring in TAA next week for FT.

I wouldn’t sell Jota. If those I’d lose Maddison if even.

Not much left of the season.

If you get them now you keep them for the rest of the season.

      Coin toss for me

I'd prefer Jota for value and the flexility of using the mid slot for someone who makes a late run. KdB for instance could be really interesting if City go out of CL and lose in the cup.

Mates, Im in a big struggle so would appreciate the help here

    Mendy
    Fofana, Rudiger, Holding
    Salah), Bruno, Gundo, Jota, Neto
    Kane, Vardy

    Forster, Masuaku, Philips, Davis

Plan was to do Gundo to Son for next GW

Plan was to do only Gundo to Son for next GW but I waited too long, so now Im 0.1 short...

I can still do it + Neto Vardy to Lingard Nacho (-8), should I proceed?
