Arteta explains Leno benching as ill Aubameyang misses out again

Arsenal v Fulham is one of just two Premier League matches that takes place on a less-busy-than-usual Sunday.

Kick-off at the Emirates is at 13:30 BST.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.3m) isn’t part of the Arsenal matchday squad, with the Gunners confirming on Saturday that he “will continue to be supported and assessed by the medical team in the coming days” after contracting malaria.

Martin Odegaard (£5.9m) also misses out with an ankle issue but “is hoping to be back in light training next week”.

Aubameyang’s absence means a fifth successive competitive start for the in-form Alexandre Lacazette (£8.4m), who has six Fantasy Premier League attacking returns in as many top-flight appearances.

The Frenchman was the fourth most-bought player of Gameweek 32, attracting 270,608 transfers in.

Mikel Arteta makes five changes to the Arsenal side that started the 3-0 win over Sheffield United, with a benching for Bernd Leno (£5.0m) the most eye-catching decision.

Mat Ryan (£4.1m) starts in goal for the hosts this afternoon, with Hector Bellerin (£5.0m), Gabriel (£4.9m), Mohamed Elneny (£4.2m) and Emile Smith Rowe (£4.2m) also recalled.

Thomas Partey (£4.9m), Nicolas Pepe (£7.6m), Calum Chambers (£4.5m) and Pablo Mari (£4.4m) drop to the bench.

Arteta explained his line-up ahead of kick-off:

It’s rotation, it’s precaution, there are players who haven’t recovered from the [Slavia] game and we have to be very careful because we don’t want to lose them.

And then there are others who deserve to play, for example like Mat [Ryan] in goal. He trains like a beast, he’s been really positive around the place, he’s doing really well and he deserves a chance.

Scott Parker has matched his opposite number and made five changes to his starting XI.

Kenny Tete (£4.3m) and Terence Kongolo (£4.3m) are among the quintet to make way, with the former testing positive for COVID-19 and the latter out for the season with a knee injury.

Aleksandar Mitrovic (£5.5m), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.9m) and Harrison Reed (£4.4m) drop to the bench, meanwhile.

Ademola Lookman is back from injury and starts, while Tosin Adarabioyo (£4.5m), Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa (£4.5m), Josh Maja (£5.3m) and Ivan Cavaleiro (£5.3m) are also thrown back into the fray.

This is the reverse fixture of the Gameweek 1 clash at Craven Cottage, a match that the Gunners won 3-0.

Arsenal XI: Ryan, Bellerin, Gabriel, Holding, Saka, Ceballos, Elneny, Xhaka, Smith Rowe, Martinelli, Lacazette.

Fulham XI: Areola, Aina, Andersen, Robinson, Zambo Anguissa, De Cordova-Reid, Adarabioyo, Cavaleiro, Lemina, Lookman, Maja.

Surely no-one picked Leno when Holding only cost 4.2m

        Oooof

But one way of looking at it would be Martinez and Leno could both end up on 6 points over the two fixtures. Reaching I know.

Yeah hope so! Still a waste of a transfer, but I had 2 and nothing much else to do, so it's not so bad unless Martinez hauls.

Not sure on anything yet, but will likely have Kane on the bench, maybe Lloris/Reguilon. Losing a Son fixture is a small price to pay to maximise elsewhere imo

Currently have Bruno, Jota, Lingard, Raphinha and Auba.

Plan to replace Auba but for Who? Salah the obvious choice or are there any gens out there looking good to finish the season?

Is there any evidence that Salah increases output at the end of the season? He's always in contention for the golden boot.

I had a check and could find none. The one time he increased output was in his massive season and that looks like simple variance.

Look at the football in that VAR freezeframe. The ball is still indented on Lacazette's head, so it surely it's the point it has 'left' him as part of the pass, so they are measuring a toe being offside at a meaningless point.

They always measure the first touch of the ball, freeze the frame there but you're right it's stupid if they can't consistently pause and use the same frame of reference

Var should look at two frames - the one fractionally before the ball is passed, and the one fractionally after.
Offside should only be given if the player is offside in BOTH frames.

Alternatively, if it's offside in one frame but not offside in the other then they should stick with the referee's call (like umpire's call in cricket).

This is what i've thought since the start. Except, look at the chosen frame plus the two either side (the defender/attacker can both be moving in either direction after all). Only call it offside if all three are offside. Main problem is the time factor.

Agreed, the time factor is a problem.
Perhaps they could speed things up by having more than one VAR person, each looking at a different frame.
Or only saying it's offside if that can be determined within say 30 seconds of identifying the relevant frames.

More person-power should work, but leaves room for inconsistency in identifying body parts. I would have thought that tech could automatically generate the extra 2 frames and track the chosen body part to plot the lines, but it's probably not wishful thinking.

Can't say a timer makes any sense to me whatsoever tbh, unless you mean in testing, as a marker for whether the method should be introduced.

It would be good if tech could identify the relevant body parts and draw the lines without human intervention, except perhaps to have a quick look at the tech's decision and confirm or reject it.
But that's all probably pretty difficult - think of "I am not a bot" tests where you have to look at pictures to prove you're not a bot!

Yeah but I presume the task is much less complex if the human manually selects the body part first. It's an issue of following the movement left or right by a frame each way with a slight allowance for changing shape. Still, no idea how feasible it is.

Sometimes more than one body part might need to be looked at.
Perhaps a toe in one frame and part of the arm in another.
And there might even be more than one defender potentially playing the receiving attacker onside.
But in most situations the human could probably identify which body parts of which players need to be checked fairly quickly.

Players need to start wearing little motion sensors + embed one into the ball

Something like the motion capture you see for video games

This kind of thing could be ideal in the future. I doubt it's feasible right now though, unless the rule is really simplified to the sensor in the bottom of your boot, or something.

Maybe if the chip in the ball can tell the exact microsecond of contact, then the chips on the extremities of the players can determine the line or something....

Probably years away from that ever being a reality though

When it’s offside by a toe or a hair, it’s not a right decision and it ruins football. It should only be used when it’s clear as day.

Like when Cardiff got relegated 2 years ago cause the Chelsea player was a mile offside. That’s when it’s useful. If they need to draw lines for more than 30 seconds then you know it’s just stupid.

Haha, that logic doesn't even make sense anyway because whatever you allow, you're just moving where the minute lines will be drawn from

Diagne’s goal last week was onside, even with VAR ruling it out. You’re acting like it makes the perfect call every time. It was brought in to do that and it’s not doing that.

VAR officials admitted it didnt have the angle to say he was onside and therefore had to go with original decision. lets have some context please. its not perfect. and neither is Hawkeye .

It’s not perfect but if it’s not perfect, it shouldn’t be used. That’s why many say when it’s a clear offside, then it’s useful, otherwise no.

When lines have to be drawn for 10 minutes. Usually when it’s clear, the decision is made pretty quickly.

No I don't, I'm afraid. I'm asking how the VAR can tell if the offside is clear or not. And you're just telling me that it will be a bit faster or slower.

We don't think that, we just think it's a bit silly to get upset by a correct decision. You want the goal to stand and Fulham get relegated just because you support arsenal?

There's a better solution that needs to be thought up, but you certainly haven't put one forward

If it stands or doesn’t stand, irrelevant as Arsenal are mid table this season.

What did you think when VAR ruled out a perfectly good goal for West Brom last week? It’s meant to make the right call each time and it’s not doing that, so that’s why so many people don’t like it. VAR is a good thing but not for such close calls like that or others that have happened this season.

Yeah I don't like it either but that still doesn't explain why you'd complain about a correct decision, and you've yet to answer the question of when does a close call stop being a close call?

So happy to see VAR get one right for a change and the match officials get the credit they deserve. That one even stood up to my preference to judge offside solely by the feet when VAR is available to get rid of the dodgy armpit hair ones

Not sure of the benefit of limiting it to the feet. Still have to define where the foot starts and ends and draw a line to the floor. I'm not dead against the rule change, necessarily, but I don't think it really solves any VAR problem, and feels a bit weird to exclude other parts of the body you can score with (especially the rest of the leg).
