The Lacazette injury latest as budget forward Nketiah waits on first-team chance

Arsenal 1-1 Fulham

  • Goals: Eddie Nketiah (£5.3m) | Josh Maja (£5.3m)
  • Assists: Daniel Ceballos (£4.7m) | Mario Lemina (£4.5m)
  • Bonus: Ceballos x3 Maja x2 Nketiah x1

A last-minute Eddie Nketiah (£5.3m) goal broke Fulham hearts as Scott Parker’s side let more points – and another clean sheet – slip away.

Recent Fantasy interest in the Cottagers has mostly revolved around their excellent keeper Alphonse Areola (£4.6m), with his 5.0% ownership enduring a third straight clean sheet wipe-out, the last two involving late, late goals.

A Lack Of Lacca

But it was indicative of a generally poor match that the biggest FPL news involved an injury to Alexandre Lacazette (£8.4m) who, with 10.5% ownership, was easily the most popular player on display – even more so after attracting 270,000 transfers in ahead of last Friday’s deadline.

The striker had scored four goals in his last four starts, only to limp off in the 70th minute on Sunday, with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta delivering a ‘wait and see’ verdict after the game.

We’ll have the scan on Tuesday, see the extent of the injury and the timeline to it. I don’t know. He felt something in his hamstring, we don’t know the extent of it.

Arteta’s attacking options were already limited by an injury to Martin Odegaard (£5.9m) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang‘s (£11.3m) bout of malaria, meaning a second straight league start for Gabriel Martinelli (£4.9m).

The manager spoke about the need to rotate following Thursday’s Europa League tie and he was true to his word, with his most surprising move replacing the 7.3%-owned Bernd Leno (£5.0m) with Mat Ryan (£4.1m) because the latter ‘trains like a beast’.

All that training led to zero saves and no clean sheet either for the Australian, and it is the Lacazette development that could hurt the most Fantasy managers.

Then again, more Europa League-based rotation and upcoming games against Everton and Chelsea aren’t exactly boosting the appeal of the Gunners’ assets anyway.

Fast Eddie

At least the Frenchman’s replacement, Nketiah, thrived to earn the praise of his manager.

He always offers his best. Today he scored a goal, he had another two important chances and he’s always a threat in front of goal.

Fulham’s one and only shot on target came from Josh Maja‘s (£5.3m) penalty. Parker’s side have now scored just four goals in their last eight matches and haven’t managed more than one in a fixture since Gameweek 24.

The problem for Fantasy managers is that the Cottagers’ previous defensive resilience is an equally distant memory – having kept five clean sheets in seven matches up to Gameweek 27, they’ve not managed a single one since.

Parker might not have given up the ghost just yet:

No chance, absolutely no chance have we lost hope. Why would there not be belief? Of course, we are disappointed, I’m gutted, the last two weeks have been a real kick in terms of that.

We wake up tomorrow morning, put the gloves back on and go again, keep fighting, and try and pick up points.

But a Blank Gameweek 33 is followed by trips to Chelsea and Manchester United over the final five fixtures, suggesting Fantasy managers are unlikely to be moved by Parker’s fighting talk.

Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Ryan; Bellerin (Pepe 68), Holding, Gabriel, Xhaka; Elneny (Partey 68), Ceballos; Saka, Smith Rowe, Martinelli; Lacazette (Nketiah 70).

Fulham XI (4-4-2): Areola; Aina, Andersen, Adarabioyo, Robinson; Cavaleiro (Bryan 84), Zambo Anguissa, Lemina, Lookman (Reed 69); Maja (Loftus-Cheek 77), De Cordova-Reid.

Need to wait and see still - could all just be a ballsy move in a big football chess politics match and we'll see what kind of bargaining chip it ends up being at the negotiations. Maybe in the end it'll just change format slightly to have more big big games that'll attract attention but still keeping it competitive to qualify for and participate in for at least as many teams. Being stubbornly optimistic!

I've lost the love for the champions league anyway. Don't want to see a get out of jail card for badly run clubs like Madrid and Inter. Also sick of dodgy regimes sportswashing. Glad fpl gives a format to keep an interest games without the need to watch any.

PL will cave in. Too risky for them, too much money lost.

Bye bye FA Cup, Carabao Cup and CL/EL though

So if a team like Leicester or West Ham finishes in top 4 in PL it will not qualify for CL and if a team like Arsenal or Spurs finishes in 8th or 9th place it will qualify regardless??

Its a different league. So the rules are gonna be different. Its not gonna be called CL for starters. We need to see how things become when the dust settle.

UEFA will definitely exclude them from the CL for sure if it goes ahead. Only question is if domestic leagues will be strong and ban them from domestic competitions too. Potentially no Prem, Carabao and FA Cup for English teams if FA exercises their right to exclude teams who join a different league

If the Super League is true to their statement, money can flow down into PL and the other leagues. So I expect PL to be negotiating that before taking any moves to remove them imo.

I really hope this is a bluff and they back down.
I have followed one of the 6 all my life but I won’t watch this new European league if they leave.
And if we all do the same the is no tv money when there are no viewers and they can all come back with their tails between their legs. No team - I don’t care what their history is deserve an automatic place in a super league.

Agreed. I won't be watching them for sure. Its aite. PL will be competitive with the other teams and would be fun to watch regardless. I dont want to support those selfish greedy clubs and league anyway.

I'm sure many players and coaches are against this too so will leave those clubs and come to the league anyway.

Problem is its not just the UK supporters that they get their money from any more. Am currently in Indonesia. 250 million people. Love football and support Liverpool, United, City, Barcelona, Real Madrid etc. And thats just one Asian country.
I imagine the same in the USA.
I suppose they will end up having even more games at times that suit those time zones. Probably even end up playing games all over the place as they dont particularly seem to care about local fans.

Yeah, you can't get them all right, but that's an easy switch if needed, plus you still have other funds.

I'm doing okay this week. It's the upcoming weeks I'm more worried about - having injuries, City players, and a very poor defense. I'll have to take a hit at some point just to get me on a better track.

      You're being idealistic

Probably before your time but when the Packer revolution hit cricket no one much was bothered by the thought of being banned from International cricket. The money at stake then was relative peanuts.

FIFA won't ban them mind - their self-interest dictates that they need all the players. They're just upset that this puts the kibosh on their plans for a world league.

I cannot see the 12 clubs involved not getting some backing from FIFA. Hence the very watery answer to the Jornos.
Firstly they will look at their downside before announcing it. They probably have playing for theirational teams accepted which won't piss off the players. Also, their player values will shrink so the players will have less bargaining power when negotiating wages. Apart from the pandemic, I see this a reason (outside of Chelski) big clubs have limited their spending.
One thing to think about though, It will happen one way or the other. Money always takes precedence.

Honestly I hope (should it go ahead) that it would lead to something similar to what we see from Salary capped leagues in Australia and USA, where there's still 'big clubs' but more often than not completely different teams can win every year and not just the usual established winners like there is currently in the PL

Another way of looking at this is that it would return the English footballing world to the 1970s.

                United demoted
Derby and Ipswich forces in the land
                Nottingham Forest too
Chelsea and City just sometime clubs

The old style first division was way more fun back then.

Average points of the GW would massively drop. You may put the above names to the premium 9-11m brackets, but you cannot make them to have consistent returns week in week out like Bruno, Salah, Kane did. We would basically pay premium money for a player with 1G 2A in 5 games and stuff like that

Nothing is certain yet, although admittedly it's looking more likely than not it will be soon enough.
Regardless, it could just mean less casuals will play FPL, and next season it would be much more interesting with all the extra thinking needed. FPL would've been turned on it's head (not as drastically) with the inevitable 5 subs introduction anyways soon enough...

Not a Spurs supporter. But it is funny how people keep saying they are not 'elite' enough for the ESL.

The ESL has nothing to do with previous football success. It all has to do with financial success. They are the 9th richest club in the world. By financial measures they are 'elite'.

11 of the 12 current founding members are in the Top 15 in Deloitte's index of richest football clubs in the world. If anything, it it Milan who are not 'elite'. Once PSG, Bayern and Dortmund are added you will have the Top 14 richest clubs in the world in the ESL.

The premise of financial richness doesn't compute for me. Look at the World's richest athletes by earnings, Tiger Woods, Federer, Phil Michel son in the top 10 despite being banjaxed or past it. I refuse to accept Spurs should make the grade.

The concept of the super league is that it is more appetising because all the clubs are super and the product will be more attractive.

Spurs Arsenal Milan will become the equivalent of Everton Newcastle and Villa. There just to make up numbers. And that's before the other 3-5 needed to make enough numbers to create a viable league. It'll be quite as two tier as other competitions about now.

They qualify on wealth but their status will take a drop from top 6 contenders - in a good season - to being in a fight not to finish bottom.

                    Yes, but:

                    1) They get to see their club compete regularly against the true elite (Barcelona, Real Madrid etc)
                    2) No relegation makes it more likely they can compete financially in the long term
                    3) Loads more money that Everton, Newcastle, Villa would ever earn in the PL

Not disagreed on points 2 and 3

Point 1 is moot. Milan, Arsenal and Spurs would become bottom liers in a super league of 15 - the equivalent of WBA and Burnley. By December their interest in Super League would effectively be over and they would put out second string teams to concentrate on domestic football

No it's not intentional! There aren't too many people flagging them right now and it's been a busy bit for the mod team recently - we need a few more tmods o help out for the off season and next season particularly in terms of content promotion. Or now!

Please flag as many HTs as you see out there. Or if you want to take on a bit of a role making them that's very welcome too.

If anyone here sees a topic that needs a Hot Topic please write a comment and flag it so the mods can find it more easily 🙂

The super league proposal looks like a condensed form of the champions league. Not really getting it. They say they will continue in their domestic tournaments also?

So will they stop competing in champions league? Clubs already complain a lot about too many fixtures.

Waiting for the manager and player backlash to come...

In practical terms it is really an attempt to take over the CL

What does or does not happen in all likelihood will largely depend on the attitudes of the broadcasters. Sky (and other rights holders) will not allow the PL to exclude the big 4 plus 2 from the Premier League.

The other main parameter is what the German clubs will do. Bayern have the power to put a stop to it as their absence kills the notion of a super competition. It then essentially becomes a souped version of the Anglo Italian cup. Numbers are crucial to make it a success. You can't have a viable league of 12 -15 clubs.
