Five FPL blanks in seven for Bruno as Greenwood’s fine late-season form continues

Manchester United 3-1 Burnley

  • Goals: Mason Greenwood (£7.0m) x2, Edinson Cavani (£7.9m) | James Tarkowski (£5.3m)
  • Assists: Marcus Rashford (£9.5m), Paul Pogba (£7.6m), Donny van de Beek (£6.6m) | Ashley Westwood (£5.3m)
  • Bonus: Greenwood x3, Rashford x2, Cavani x1

Manchester United’s win over Burnley on Sunday means that the Red Devils need just eight points from their final six games to secure a top-four spot.

The concerns from a Fantasy perspective are that Ole Gunnar Solksjaer may start preserving key individuals around their upcoming Europa League semi-final, particularly as there is little meaningful left to play for on the domestic front – assuming they have given up the ghost of catching their cross-city rivals.

But there was little evidence of minute-management in Gameweek 32, with United pretty much at full strength for the visit of the Clarets.

BLANK BRUNO

Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m) may have swerved the kind of rotation that has plagued the popular FPL assets at Manchester City and Chelsea but there was little reward for those Fantasy managers who have kept faith with the Portuguese schemer, as he blanked for the fifth time in seven matches.

He averages just four points per match from Gameweek 26 onwards, a seven-game spell that represents his worst run as a Fantasy asset since his move to England.

In mitigation, there have been meetings with Chelsea, Manchester City, West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur in a tricky-ish recent run – but blanks against the likes of Crystal Palace and Burnley have been more of a concern.

We’ll delve more into his recent output in a Members article this week.

RASH’S CHALLENGE

Rashford shrugged off an ongoing foot problem to feature in this encounter, beginning the game up front in a central role. That was a bit of a blow to owners of Edinson Cavani (£7.9m), who would have been expecting the veteran Uruguayan to start more games than not in the absence of Anthony Martial (£8.6m).

In the end, Cavani came off the bench to score; over half of his FPL attacking returns this season have come when he has been a substitute.

As for Rashford, his manager said of his fine display and ongoing fitness battle:

I asked him how he was because he played so well. And I think because he played so well and he felt good out there, he was trying to force a 90-minute out of him. But he said that he was too sore. So it’s just pain that comes after he’s played for 60-70 minutes. He lasted for 80 almost today, so that was progress.

GAMES MASON

Rashford and Fernandes have five attacking returns apiece in the last nine Gameweeks – a total that Greenwood has matched in his last three outings.

Following his 15-point haul against the Clarets, the teenage forward is the fourth-most bought FPL asset of Gameweek 33 at the time of writing.

His benching against Spurs was a prime example of how there’ll always be the threat of rotation hanging over his head, particularly as United reach the latter stages of the Europa League.

But at £7.0m, there’ll still be a few takers.

His second goal was fortuitously deflected in but the goal rush has been no fluke: when FPL assets are filtered by their last four matches, Greenwood is top of the pile for shots in the box.

POPE MOBILE

Fantasy community eyes Burnley clean sheet in first Double Gameweek match

Missing from the Burnley side again was Nick Pope (£5.5m), who is working his way back from a shoulder injury.

Sean Dyche said after full-time:

We had to make a judgement call. We think he’s got every chance to be fit for next week.

Not that Pope’s availability has made much of a difference, as the usually solid Clarets are on the division’s longest run without a clean sheet (seven games) and have kept just four shut-outs in their last 20 fixtures.

James Tarkowski (£5.3m) grabbed Burnley’s goal but the in-form Chris Wood (£6.3m) once again impressed, being denied a goal after 15 seconds by the offside flag and posing a nuisance the United backline.

He himself has had 16 shots in his last four matches, just one behind Greenwood.

Matej Vydra (£4.8m) was benched, meanwhile, with Dyche later confirming that he wanted an extra man in midfield to deal with United’s strength in central areas.

Tarkowski’s goal means that United have conceded to every team ranked 7th or below bar Wolves this season, with half of their 12 clean sheets coming against the top six.

Manchester United XI: Henderson, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw, Fred (Cavani 45), McTominay, Greenwood, Fernandes, Pogba, Rashford (van de Beek 84).

Burnley XI: Peacock-Farrell, Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor, Gudmundsson (Rodriguez 88), Cork, Brownhill (Vydra 88), McNeil, Westwood, Wood.

You would get an individual budget based on your FPL ranking history. Those with high finishes would get 750m each .... the rest would get 40p and coupon for a Boots meal deal.

I will explain it to you a second time mate. There will be absolutely nothing to play for in the PL, top 4 will be meaningless and there will be no difference between finishing 2nd and 16th. These Clubs will certainly prefer the prize money of the corrupt ESL over a lousy PL title right?

What is the justification for having a league where you aren’t playing in it, based on merit?

The likes of West Ham and Leicester having very good seasons are completely undermined and are being shafted, due to Arsenal/Spurs thinking they’re worthy of being part of the big show even though they’re 7th and 9th and neither club have ever won a European trophy. Spurs last won the league before man went to the moon ffs.

Champions League has a tremendous impact on the PL. Without CL, no one would care what teams finished Top 4 to qualify for it. Without Champions League, interest in PL goes way down once a team like City th9is year has wrapped up the league(In theory) with 10 or 12 game weeks left. Sure people playing Fantasy still have some interest, but for the majority of other fans, once there is nothing left to play for, interest truly wanes

You guys, just follow the footsteps from PL and UEFA. It's horrible.

Are you daft? You do not know how corrupted PL and UEFA are?

What are you talking about? What details are you talking about? Just because PL and UEFA are money driven and corrupt, doesnt make the ESL an idea that destroys competition and sporting merit.

Both can be bad, but I'd rather take the lesser evil.

I really dont think you understand what this does to football as a whole. The actual sport will become pointless. The result of the game will become inconsequential. Why would United or Liverpool or Madrid be bothered to win games if they can qualify for the ESL every year anyways

That's unknown for now. Is this a ruse from these teams to have more day in structure of CL, EL and possibly another tier? An ESL for now looks like it could be a TV revenue generator with few real fans at games and could die a sudden death if it ever happens. This fella has some interesting thoughts on recent events. Only problem is it's 2021, billionaires own clubs and football is competing with Netflix and Disney on TV as a source of entertainment.

This. ESL is more likely to itself be ruined than to ruin “football.” All these nightmare scenarios (nothing to play for in domestic leagues, top national players out of World Cup, etc.) are predicated on sabre-rattling by FIFA against this upstart competition.

In the end, is FIFA going to spite itself by ensuring that top teams and players don’t get to play in the established competitions/leagues? Is ESL going to eclipse CL in prestige, such that top teams would forfeit ability to play in latter?
          Doesn’t seem too likely.

He could have got more out of that squad instead of bleating that they weren't good enough. He couldn't sign more players this season anyway so should have knuckled down, bitten his tongue with some players when needed, and got them into the top 4. He wasn't whinging about the same squad when they were doing well before Christmas. Meanwhile David Moyes on a much smaller budget has West Ham fighting for top 4.

Since years ago, football (or any sports event) is about money.

This is completely different. The same 15 teams qualify year in year out. All the games will just be glorified friendlies with no impact and nothing on the line. Those clubs will dominate national leagues too with the amount of money they’ll receive basically killing every other football club in Europe. Not to mention most of these games will be held in America and Asia overnight. Football will die

While my first sentence is how alot of things are monetize, my example is specifically about the CL.

I stated impact. You are entitled to think thats taking merit out of football. But i dont share the same view.

I think it’s not a case of should it happen as it should. It’s whether it will and I just can’t see it as it would take real strength to do that and that’s not the world we live in now.

If everyone stands together. Fifa, UEFA, fans, media and excludes them completely from all football, there is enough strength in that. I will stand with those who have the balls even if my own club suffers.

I know mate, but it’s just not going to happen. I know exactly what should be done. Kind of like the Covid situation but they way things should have happened requires a great deal of strength and sacrifice, which requires a bit of effort.

Hopefully it's a ruse to renegotiate Champions League structure. But it's not surprising. TV companies have scheduled football matches since the PL started. The Champions League and PL were setup to generate TV revenue making English football an attractive investment for foreign owners, one of them with ties to, arguably, the world's most notorious criminal. And during COVID the PL resumed, players were regularly tested while the NHS struggled due to lack of COVID tests. It's the owners actions, not the clubs, that are reprehensible. They're obviously seen a TV and merchandise market for clubs, where real fans can't travel to games. Don't be surprised if they have free admission to some games to have some atmosphere because the games revenue will be multiple what a paying attendance could be.

Becuase u dont want to get rid of clubs that run ur league. Without the big 6 there are no epl fans in asia africa and without those fans and the subsequent loss of tv revenue epl wont be a top league

If u want to get rid of all these ckubs might as well let them join the super league. Win win

End of the season - the 6 clubs get expelled from the PL / Football league, no relegation for the bottom 3 this season and promotion for the 3 clubs as usual

One legal action that could be done is to deduct points for clubs playing a weakened team

e.g. If 3 players miss a PL fixture and then subsequently play in a non-FA, non-UEFA authorised game (i.e. ESL fixture) before the next authorised game then a 6 point deduction should be imposed

Won't happen. All EPL rule changes have to be debated by the current 20 clubs. I think it needs a 15 club majority to pass so simple maths says that's not gonna happen.

They may have their hands tight legally, I don't know. And there is also big money involved.

Paddy Power are as bad as the owners of the football club.

Reduce stakes / ban successful punters. Want to encourage social gambling because they make more money from 'impulse' bets (why did they love in-play advertising etc.)

Introduced all those FOBTs because they knew it was like printing money.

If you want to bet, use the exchanges. Betfair have a good 2% commission basic package now.

And, yes, I know Betfair is part of Paddy Power. But the exchange is different to the main bookmaker. Because the exchange is still betting against the other party (whoever that is) and they don't ban you (although they do change commission structures if you become massively successful).

Somewhere along the coastline of Dover, a wild Nigel is waking up in his watchtower after receiving a telegram regarding the ESL.

He has put down his binoculars and is now vigoursly polishing the brass buttons on his blazer and dusting off his flat cap.

How on Earth can someone consider Tottenham as a big club, they are not the biggest club even in London, let alone England or Europe. Tbh they are a big 6 side when considering teams from London only. Arsenal is a joke in the last few years, Milan played CL like 10 years ago, Juventus is the biggest loser in European football... Anyway, good luck to all the Supersoccer participants in a league organized by a US bank LOL

Based on annual income and worldwide fanbase they probably are

Simplistically - who is more deserving of CL football next season, Leicester, West Ham or Spurs?

ESL thought process says Spurs, due to the South Korean fan base

None of them - clue should be in the name and none of them are anywhere near champions

In some ways it was the expansion of the CL to enable top 4 qualifiers and fairly guaranteed income that has led to the sort of greed we now see with the ESL.

no complaints there - the CL in its current guise is a bloated mess of greed in its own right!

Guess how many European cups Arsenal, Spurs, Man City & Atletico have won between them

Nothing to do with trophies won. Some bunch of accountants and their algorithms have worked out the potential fanbases and TV revenue plus other revenues for the clubs that are in a proposed ESL. Forest or Villa weren't invited. It's a complete load of bollo#. Corruption in Broad daylight under floodlights.
