Three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser: The key FPL stats ahead of Gameweek 33

The reigning FPL champion of India, Lateriser, takes a deep dive into the player and team statistics available to Fantasy Football Scout subscribers.

Before we move into the final stretch of the season, I think it’s a good idea to venture into the Premium Members Area and look at some relevant statistics.

I am writing this article midway through Gameweek 32 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) so have not taken the data from Wednesday or Thursday’s matches into consideration.

With that in mind, here’s a selection of stats I find important and relevant…

While making transfers this week, it is important to cast an eye on the potential doubles for teams in Gameweek 35. If your team is in place for Blank Gameweek 33, it might be worth saving a transfer.

If you prefer not to save one, it looks likely that Manchester United and Leicester City will have a decent-looking Double Gameweek 35 and could potentially blank in Gameweek 36. I mention these two teams because they have a good run until the end of the season, as well.

Arsenal could also have a decent-looking Double Gameweek but I worry about their motivation on the domestic front, assuming that their primary focus is going to be the Europa League. It is all speculation at this stage, but it is always worth casting an eye on the future while planning your moves.

That’s it from me for this week. I hope this article helped you and thank you for reading.

Yesterday was an important day in football and while writing this article this morning, I couldn’t help but smile. Good luck this Gameweek!

What is FPL Upside Chasing and how can I implement it in 2020/21?

Would you rather keep Son or Kane? It's likely only one of the two, to allow me to differentiate a bit. Leaning towards Kane as mid options looking more attractive atm, but worried about his injuries...

Probably Kane if he's fit as there are more options in midfield.

Have to use a transfer this week, otherwise it'll disappear. I'm using Bench Boost in 35 so who should go:

    Mendy, Forster
    Dias, Coady, Targett, Holding, Phillips
    Salah, Fernandes, Son, Jota, Lingard
    Kane, Iheanacho, Vydra

Possibly Son but now I'm concerned over the starts of Mendy, Phillips and Dias.

i'd do Mendy - chance of a blank keeper.
otherwise Philips...though i don't know his injury situation - and can you even get a decent player for his price?

Anyone able to explain the correlation of big chances and XG?

Looking at the stats above it seems slightly counterintuitive that Mane has had 2 more big chances than Mo but a fairly significantly lower XG. How are big chances measured?

(Had looked at the number of big chances for Mane anyway recently and was also wondering if this was due to a TAA resurgence and whether that was a combo worth considering.)

Is that over certain period or over season?

If a player gets a penalty, his xG will be higher than non-penalty big chances.

The stats are for the last 6 matches

I get the concept of XG but never thought to ask what a big chance is. I'd worked on the assumption that they closely correlated to a chance with high XG and were some form of shorthand for it.

I suppose that if you get one sitter then your XG rises significantly - you point on pens restated. But it does still feel slightly odd that both Jota and Mo have better XG but fewer big chances.

You’ll get zero transparency on this

I’ve asked many times - initially because on GW1 of last season McGoldrick had 2 big chances for 0.4 XG meanwhile no other player had more than one big chance yet there were 11 players with higher XG’s than him in that individual week

Bruno put a chance on a plate for Rashford vs West Ham earlier in the season (really massive chance - an average player definitely would have scored it 8 or 9 times out of 10)....0.25 XG

Lingard has an open goal with no goalkeeper vs Leicester last week... 0.25 XG

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus

And a penalty is 0.75 XG with Opta as Holmes says

Are big chances an FFS construct or are they inherited from Opta?

I assume Opta - OPTA do measure big chances :

I think that big chances include cases where the player with the big chance didn't even take a shot (possibly passing instead, or leaving it for someone else), whereas xG only counts the cases where the player did actually shoot - or something like that.

That’s very interesting and would make some sense of the disparity. Typically take a whole basket of stats into consideration anyway.

Opta xG doesn't cover opposition player positions which can be a big drawback of the stats. Statsbomb is the best as they do (and is the main source used by clubs/scouts iirc) but isn't as easily available. The Lingard xG for that shot was 0.78 via Statsbomb vs. 0.26 via Opta.

          Fascinating

Just had a gander at their definition of big chance which does mention lack of opposition player pressure. Has assumed that applied to XG until you pointed this out.

Interesting in how you weight Opta XG over big chances in the light of this

Dallas for me - Leeds are a little better defensively and he's really a midfielder.
Pereira for me feels like Cancelo version 2. Seems like he should haul - but doesn't.

From a Leicester fan, those outside of Leicester and on here forget Pereira has only just recovered from a year long serious injury. You don't come straight back at top gear after an injury like that. He is a fantastic player, was perhaps the best right back in the league before his injury, but it would be rather foolish to expect him to return at full throttle, either in the real world or as a fantasy asset.

Save or move one of my bench guys on, prob Neto to Pereira, Arsenal cheap mid or Raphina

    Johnstone
    James Trent Holding Rudiger Fofana
    Lingard Jota Salah
    Vardy Nacho

    Forster Kane Son Neto

If i replace Neto, holding would drop to bench

    1. pingissimus

      Pereira in for me

Assuming that spot is a bench spot going forward he's a great option. Given James in defence I'd be wanting some cover from the bench - ie Holding or James to play.

Might even go for the deeply unfashionable Harrison over Raph given the injury cloud. More returns and more points this season.

One more return and only has more points due to playing 250 more minutes than Raphinha. Misleading stats.

But only marginally misleading - they are in the same ballpark for returns despite minutes

They have been running tandem for much of the season. There has been an absolute preference for Raph in this period but since GW25 they have both had 3 returns - even excluding Liverpool match when Raph was absent.

    2. RogDog_jimmy
      • 3 Years

I wish we knew Raph's injury situation. I wouldn't be bringing in an injured player without clarity (imagine bringing in Grealish...)

Feels you need at least 1 playing bench with James rotation threat - so Neto to someone makes sense.

in the first pickle for a while for me with Mendy.

        Mendy (Forster)
        Rudi, TAA, Alonso, Holding, Fofana
        Bruno, Salah, Jota, Son, Lingard
        Kane, Iheanahco, Vydra

        1 ft
        0.1 itb
        OR 282 (liverank)

Currently have Vydra on the bench with Kane & Son.
        Potentially no playing keeper.

Can do Mendy > Patricio but no one more expensive unless I take a hit elsewhere...
Son > someone...Maddison, Rodriguez, Greenwood, Havertz...

cheers Corgzzzz - agree on Son, feels like saving that hit is smarter.

Also considering Meslier over Patricio - like that he's a little cheaper and once past MUN this week it's BHA, Tot, Bur, Sou, WBA...pretty dang good run in.

Any suggestions here? Either save, use my 1ft or a take a -4.

Stones-> TAA (who I want) would mean I need to find 2 million elsewhere.
Bruno out potentially.. (Maybe Maddison if he is fit or Greenwood in).

        Martinez.
        Shaw, Rudiger, Burn, Dallas.
        Jota, Salah, Bruno, Lingard.
        Iheanacho (c), Watkins.
        Steer, Stones, Kane, Son.
1ft, 0.4m ITB, No more chips - 60k atm- Want 10- 20k but looks impossible.

I have exactly the same issue. Everything depends on Sir Harry's fitness. I'm leaning towards shipping Son to someone, probably Greenwood, but if Grealish or Maddison were fit they'd be interesting options.

OR move Mendy if you don't think he'll start (I have no idea).

Definitely try keep 2ft for next week.

wait and see if Maddison is back in the first team today.
if he's not I'd be a little worried about his starts going forward - Leicester have been good going forward without him.

Still I suspect he's back and in that case I'd take him over Greenwood. But it's super close.

Did very little, Brighton had a low block and Alonso had little impact, that said CFC were defo off the pace yesterday.......however Alonso came off and CHO filled in very well in the same postion.

didn't look great. had one decent chance forward but wasn't in super attacking positions it didn't seem.
felt like the sub off was to shore up the defense.

i don't feel great as an Alonso owner - but 6pts is good.
Good news with him is i hardly see him being sub'd ON ever....so it's either a start or nothing.

Thanks both, I am trying to decide who to ditch first between Alonso and James. Alonso seems the one.

Rarely get to use the word, but with 2FT this week I have a right old transfer zugzwang going on.

          Easy. Just burn a transfer.

Zugzwang - the unfortunate compulsion to move.
In chess, this refers to situations where any move you make would make your position worse, and the rules say that you must move.
In FPL though you do have the option of not moving.

            Nice

In The Sopranos they kept saying more is lost by indecision than wrong decision...

But in FPL it’s sometimes (feels like often even) better to just do nothing & leave well enough alone

The sensible move in this situation would be to lose the transfer

I know, but that feels like a waste. A really interesting rule change in FPL would be to let burned transfers credit you back hits taken earlier in the season.

I like the word. There is rarely a situation that can't be improved over time. Look at your FTs & probable hits till season end and perhaps negate the weaker move(s) by an advanced move. Revisit the drawing board. It's ok to drop an FT though if it doesn't add value to your strategy. It's been done many times. You're not diminishing points or losing value if a current FT is a square plug in a round hole 😉

Same here, 11 playing + 1 sub - not much to do. However I need to maximize and attack every week I can so will most likely be going Son -> Maddison despite Sonny's excellent 34 and 35.

Here you go. It's got a lot harder to get in the top10K, basically:

          Season Total Players
          2006/07 1.27mil
          2007/08 1.7mil
          2008/09 1.95mil
          2011/12 2.78mil
          2012/13 2.61mil
          2013/14 3.22mil
          2014/15 3,502,998
          2015/16 3,734,001
          2016/17 4,503,345
          2017/18 5,910,135
          2018/19 6,324,237

Is this WC good to go or would you change something?

        Martinez
        Trent, Coady, Castagne, Veltman
        Salah, Rashford, Greenwood, Lingard
        Nacho, Watkins

        Meslier, Dallas, Raphinha, Kane

Raphinha can be someone up to 7.0 but not sold on either Trossard or Siggy, and i'll want Leeds players soon again.
It can also be Jota, but then having 5 players in Mun vs Liv game...

I think veltman is better than Shaw, Rudiger, Targett, TAA and Holding for the rest of the season. Reason is that he plays in a very opportunistic position Right midfield and attacking midfield.

Just do it now, keep TAA for the rest of the season and get rid of the headache. Don't expect Alonso in such a big game where defensive responsibility will be important anyways.
