Hope that Kane could return in Gameweek 34 as Bale thrives under new manager

Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Southampton

  • Goals: Gareth Bale (£9.2m), Son Heung-min (£9.5m) | Danny Ings (£8.4m)
  • Assists: Lucas Moura (£6.7m), Sergio Reguilon (£5.6m)| James Ward-Prowse (£5.9m)
  • Bonus: Son x3, Bale x2, Ings x1

KANE ABLE (TO PLAY)?

A Double Gameweek 32 score that had the potential to be season-shaping ended up being merely satisfactory for owners, captainers and Triple Captainers of Harry Kane (£11.6m).

The Spurs striker had already bagged 12 points in the Lilywhites’ 2-2 draw at Everton last Friday but was denied the chance to face one of the division’s most out-of-form defences thanks to an ankle injury he picked up on Merseyside.

Spurs blank in Gameweek 33 thanks to the clash with the EFL Cup final but then enjoy another hugely appealing fixture, against relegated Sheffield United, in Gameweek 34.

Mason’s comments before kick-off sounded optimistic, with a return in the EFL Cup final still a possibility:

It’s difficult, we are still not sure. We are treating it day by day. The hope is he will be on the pitch at the end of the week.

Mason went onto make very similar comments after full-time.

We’ve just launched a snap poll for Kane owners on our website ahead of Gameweek 33, which you can find in the sidebar and below.

As things stand, over half of you are planning to keep the premium forward for Gameweek 34:

YOU CAN TAKE THE MOURINHO OUT OF SPURS…

The fabled new manager bounce/honeymoon period wasn’t immediately in evidence in north London, with the Ryan Mason era starting in an underwhelming fashion.

It was initially a ‘more of the same’ attacking display from the hosts and a suspect performance defensively.

Southampton should have been a goal to the good long before Danny Ings (£8.4m) nodded in James Ward-Prowse‘s (£5.9m) corner on the half-hour, with Hugo Lloris (£5.6m) earning an FPL save point after just 12 minutes.

There was at least a reaction in the second half, with a superb Gareth Bale (£9.2m) strike restoring parity. Son Heung-min (£9.5m) won all three points with a penalty after a foul on Sergio Reguilon (£5.6m) – the VAR awarding that spot-kick having earlier denied the same two players attacking returns by disallowing the Korean’s strike.

Bale’s thinly-veiled dig at Mourinho after full-time hinted at a more attacking mindset in the weeks to come:

We’re a big team, we have great players, we need to attack more. We need to try and stay higher up the pitch and I think we did that today.

LINE-UP LESSONS

Whenever there is a change of manager at a football club, there is hope of a second chance for previously out-of-favour players.

There are plenty of those at Spurs, such was Mourinho’s scorched earth policy during his tenure.

Bale was chief among them and he was thrown straight back into the side on Wednesday, repaying his new (interim) manager’s faith in spades.

Having lost over a million FPL owners in the last three Gameweeks, there may be renewed interest in a Bale free of Mourinho’s shackles when Sheffield United visit Spurs at the beginning of May.

HAMSTR-INGS

Hope that Kane could return in Gameweek 34 as Bale thrives under new manager 3

Southampton, like Spurs, blank in Gameweek 33.

Ings may be out for even longer than that, with the striker limping out of Wednesday’s game with a muscle problem.

Ralph Hasenhuttl couldn’t tell us much about his injury-prone striker:

Hopefully he is not too injured. I don’t know. I don’t know his situation.

From a Fantasy perspective, the main headline was the benching of Fraser Forster (£4.0m).

That left more than one in four of the top 10k without a playing goalkeeper in Double Gameweek 32.

That’s because Forster is paired with either Bernd Leno (£5.0m) or Edouard Mendy (£5.2m) in over 26% of these squads.

Forster was one of five changes that Hasenhuttl made for this match, with local journalist Jacob Tanswell sounding words of caution:

Spurs XI (4-2-3-1): Lloris, Aurier, Alderweireld, Dier, Reguilon, Hojbjerg, Ndombele (Winks 73), Bale (Bergwijn 83), Lo Celso (Lamela 79), Son, Lucas.

Southampton XI (4-4-2): McCarthy, Walker-Peters, Bednarek, Vestergaard, Salisu, Walcott (Djenepo 67), Ward-Prowse, Armstrong, Tella (Redmond 84), Adams, Ings (Diallo 58).

Raph is a bit dicey if you ask me

Bamford only got 60 minutes on his way back from injury and I can easily see the same happening if Raph does start and he's been much less upbeat about his injury situation.

Can you reach both Maddison and Greenwood from Son and Raph? That should get you eleven starters and there is the prospect of Bruno to Son/Bale in 34.

Wouldn't want 5 at the back with Raph in midfield.

Difficult one; Brighton did a great job nullifying any threat from Chelsea but they won’t be playing them every week. Looking at the fixtures, it’s questionable whether Alonso starts against West Ham and he probably won’t play against City so I’d say it’s worth a roll of the dice.

I'm pretty sure he isn't starting tonight, so providing Rodgers is just being cautious, should be all set for Palace on Monday. Could be a frustrating own going forward though.

Last night I started looking at who to replace Son with to finance the Stones/TAA transfer. I fell asleep though and when I woke in the early hours I quickly transferred him out for Maddison to beat the predicted price rise/drops for the defenders. Now I'm wishing I hadn't been such a dozy head and brought in Greenwood instead!

Pretty sure I've already made this recommendation but I'd go Dunk/Veltman

If you're on 5 at the back for this week you want instant returns as it's not a formation you'll repeat and Brighton must be the best cs bet of the week.

Going forward TAA Dallas Rudiger looks good for 3 at the back so no need to get another premium type in. Shaw would be the next best but like Rudiger he'd blank in 36 along with Holding. Brighton are quite capable of blanking WH that week.

Shaw wouldn't work as it would mean another defensive transfer in 36. Can't see that Fofana and Leicester are better than Dunk and Brighton this week - he'd likely only play this week and would also blank in 36.

I was thinking of replacing Dias, but now Stones is side lined not sure? Below is my current defence.

    Mendy
    Dias | Shaw | TAA | Rudiger | Holding

    I was going to do

    A. Dias > Dunk
    B. Dias > Veltman
    C. Dias > Dallas
    D. Replace another defender (maybe Rudiger?)
    E. Replace Mendy

Could Spurs do any better than getting Potter in?

The football Brighton have been playing this season has been really admirable. He's put a brilliant defence together and if there was Kane and Son at the pointy end they'd be crushing it this season. He couldn't take White and Dunk with him I guess but it appears to me to be a defence built on a system as much as personnel.

    Wouldn't look anywhere else myself.

He's there as a caretaker until the end of the season and Potter from memory has signed a long contract recently so wouldn't come cheap. This is closed season business.

He looks the much more complete package to me than Eddie Howe when Howe was all the rage a season or so back. He has spent but I don't get the feeling that his success is as dependent on a few players as I thought was the case with Howe. Interesting contrast between how Brighton and Bournemouth as was cope with big matches. There's a self-confidence there that he can deal with big time fixtures.

Comparison with Poch could be on point perhaps.

Do you think Mendy has lost his place? Schmeichel does look the best keeper to replace him for the next 4.

I have 2FT also, thinking Son to Greenwood, and then reverse the move to get Son back for the Sheffield United game GW34? Was going to maybe keep Mendy as hate making keeper transfers.

Well looks like we are both going for Greenwood then back to Son

I’m the same with keepers but another blank would suck and Kasper has a juicy run

If you do it I’ll do it?!

          haha it is tempting!

Leicester with Palace, Southampton and Newcastle. You'd fancy at least 2 clean sheets in there?

I'm also thinking about Son to Maddison, load up on Leicester for the Palace game! I'll maybe see how Maddison looks tonight first, Although it would be harder to sell Maddison to get Son again than it would be to sell Greenwood who has Liverpool in GW34.

Do we reckon Mendy has been dropped for Kepa definitely? I wasn’t worried after the cup game, but now with the PL game against Brighton as well, I have a bad feeling about it...

Some think Mendy is still the No1 and Neale has Mendy back in goal in his predicted line up. I do have concerns though. Im gonna wait to see if the FPL terrorist that is Tuchel mentions anything about Mendy in the presser and then make a decision on whether I need to make a keeper transfer as my 2 keepers are Mendy and Forster.

worst case scenario will be loss of 6-7pts, I would prefer this over loss of 1FT

Will wait one more week, my goalies usually scores 2-3 points on average anyway so not a big loss. Personally I still think he is nr 1 but if kepa is in goal against west ham he obviously is not

    Bruno, Salah, Lingard
    Iheanacho Bamford

    McCarthy, Dias, Gundo, Son, Kane

    0.0m ITB, 1FT

Should I FH or save the chip for a potential BGW36 ?

If Arsenal, Leicester, Chelsea and United all blank in 36 what are people without any chips left going to do?

Is it time to stop overloading on their assets?

Got: Ihenacho, Bruno, Shaw, Holding & likely Maddison too this week.

I'll likely sell Maddison & Nacho in GW36 for Raph (if fit) & DCL (SHU) or maybe even Wood.

In defensive terms one Everton looks intriguing if they look half decent against Arsenal and could be a way out of an overload of those teams at the back. It rather depends on how you rate Villa attack on how good this fixture run looks:

      34 Villa
      35 Villa WH
      36 SHU
      37 Wolves

It really pains me to have to use a transfer on a goalkeeper and its something I only usually do on a wildcard but the Mendy/Forster disaster is going to force my hand this week. Annoying.

Same goalies here but not sure if mendy is nr 2 just yet, think I will give him the west ham game. If he starts then we can stop worrying.

Too much of a risk for me. If he doesn't play we have no keeper playing.
