Scoutcast Episode 376 – Chris Wood back in fashion among FPL managers

Joe and Seb are joined by Rich, aka FlapjackFPL from the FPL Surgery podcast, to look at the key issues facing Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers ahead of Gameweek 34.

Burnley’s Chris Wood (£6.3m) was the surprising stand-out star of Gameweek 33 for many of us, with a 20-point haul against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

But a points bonanza for the New Zealand international was arguably predictable given his stellar underlying statistics in recent weeks.

The former Brighton and Hove Albion striker was among ‘unfairly unfashionable’ picks the Scoutcast crew focused on two weeks ago and given his strong returns since, Joe once again looks at this list to find the next Wood.

Can Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.5m) be back in vogue? Will FPL managers see beyond Matheus Pereira‘s (£5.5m) West Brom label? And is it possible that Newcastle’s Joelinton (£5.7m) and Dwight Gayle (£5.9m) can continue delivering unexpected returns?

Meanwhile, Leeds United have dropped off the Fantasy Football catwalk in recent weeks due to a poor fixture run. But with a great set of games to round off the campaign, they are looking trim and tailored once again. Leeds fan Seb leads the discussion through the best options.

To make room for these passé potential points scorers, more established players need to make way.

The crew are on hand to ponder on the potential risks and rewards of removing Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes (£11.5m) and Liverpool’s Diogo Jota (£7.1m).

In addition, the Scoutcast crew also look back on their Gameweek 33 highs and lows, and reveal their upcoming transfer and captaincy plans.

Rough with the Smooth features a painful-looking bench, the remaining fixtures are frisked and Rich takes his turn to pick a differential.

    Start 1.
    A) Jota (mun)
    B) Greenwood (liv)
    C) Dawson (bur)

Probably Jota but tricky - would lean away from Dawson due to Burnley attack upturn/West ham def downturn, struijk not nailed but not a bad option. Greenwood dependant on if he starts tomorrow really

If Greenwood doesn’t start I’ll go for him definitely. If he does then either Jota or Struijk

Which 2 to bench from this 5?

TAA (mun), Shaw (LIV), Fernandes (LIV), Saka (new), Lucas Moura (SHU) (can't bench both TAA and Shaw)

    1. KAALI_DAAL
      • 3 Years
      2 years, 11 months ago

      Saka definitely goes to bench.

Next is between TAA and Moura. Id play Moura i guess.

Shaw and Bruno should start in your 11 i feel. One is on good form, and the other just needs a penalty to haul.

    2. Lemongrab
      • 14 Years

Saka and...someone else. Probably Trent or Shaw, if you have Moura you might as well play him vs SHU and hope for a reaction from Spurs.

      • 3 Years

Thanks a lot both, yeh Moura is a relic from the spurs double that I'll shift next week but wanted to roll the transfer this week (plus it's SHU) - would be nice to play both Trent + Shaw, will have a think about which!

    4. Honker Muddlefoot
      • 5 Years

Saka and one of the other midfielders, for me. I would want to start both Trent and Shaw because United love a 0-0 versus the top sides, and if either side does score, there’s a decent chance they’re involved in it. With the midfielders, I think it would depend on where you’re sitting in the rankings, your mini leagues, etc. Lucas has the best fixture and recent returns, so I’d be tempted to go that route, but I could understand starting Bruno if you were wanting to protect your position with his high ownership in case he returns (I think he probably blanks, though).

Have 2FTs and 2.3m itb. plan to FH36. So it worth taking a 1 week punt this week?

    Mendy*
Rudiger* Shaw* Taa --- Holding* Veltman
    Bruno* Greenwood* Salah Lingard Jota
    Kane Nacho*

    *potential 7 dgw35 players. can bring in 2 in 25 to make it 9 + salah/kane

A: Jota >> Bale (punt in 34) who will become maddison/zaha (in dgw35)
B: Jota >> Maddison. Allows me to focus on other transfers if any of my current dgw35 players get injured etc.

Can you suggest me who to bring in? I have no idea. The only one I feel like Im missing is Trent but I dont really know how to bring him in. Also blanks/doubles are a problem and I need a bench for that.
    2FT, 0.0 ITB

Like the Bamford to Wood move - Wood has been really consistent and not sure this is points chasing at all.

The other option I see is Jota to someone like Bowen who has great fixtures and good form and that would allow you to keep Bamford. Still to be convinced that Liverpool will explode with goals - they've had plenty of good ones already and Jota will remain a rotation risk to the end I imagine.

Good post. Wood (pre-33, 5 attacking returns in 6 games) went under the radar due to Burnley team performance. We're usually more interested in Bur for their def assets. Has been overlooked alright.

1-1 draws like Chelsea/Madrid show the problem with Fantasy UCL. So little variance in what players score across the board. Bonus points and removing ball recoveries like FPL would be a far better system.

    Afternoon All

Looks like I have a possible GK situation I have Mendy and Forster.

Should I replace Forster for the below options?

    A. Johnstone
    B. Pickford
    C. Sanchez
    D. Meslier (I plan to bring in Bamford and possibly Harrison soon, not sure on triple up?)
    E. Anyone else in the 4.5M bracket

Really appreciate any comments on the above.

    Thanks

Argument for Pickford but I'd go Meslier

Don't think the triple up is an issue given defence and attack are two separate issues.

Really hate EO chat but I'm just inside top 10k and also leading mini leagues with 2nd place owning and will likely captain Kane....the sensible move is to admit a mistake and reverse the Kane to Vardy move I did last week? Kane gets 2 or 3 goals and my 40 point lead in mini league isn't looking great

Taken just on this week I'd have Kane as much the better prospect - not least because he's a bap magnet when he scores and Vardy seems to be assisting more than anything else and hasn't been getting baps for those. Aside from the SHU game not sure he's had any baps since forever.

Kane Son not so hot in 35 of course but who knows what that will really look like.
