Mount and Rodriguez injury updates as Watkins hits good form ahead of Gameweek 35

Everton 1-2 Aston Villa

  • Goals: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.5m) | Ollie Watkins (£6.5m), Anwar El Ghazi (£5.2m)
  • Assists: Lucas Digne (£6.1m) | Bertrand Traore (£5.8m)
  • Bonus Points: Digne x3 Watkins x2 Calvert-Lewin x2

Some key Fantasy assets warmed up for Double Gameweek 35 with a Goodison Park audition involving one of the more breathless first halves of the season.

The score was 1-1 at the interval, with the goals coming from FPL favourites Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.5m) and Ollie Watkins (£6.5m).

But it needed a stellar Jordan Pickford (£4.8m) performance and the frame of his goal (twice) to deny Aston Villa going in at half-time with a deserved lead before a late Anwar El Ghazi (£5.2m) strike secured the points for the visitors.

Ollie Jolly, Emi Less So

Both teams have two Gameweek 35 fixtures as they’ll face each other again once Everton have travelled to West Ham and Villa entertained Manchester United next Sunday.

Crucially, the sides also have a Gameweek 36 match, with Dean Smith’s men going to Crystal Palace and the Toffees at home to Sheffield United.

All of that ramps up the appeal of their main players, which only serves to highlight the curious case of Watkins in recent weeks.

The Villa striker is found in 25.6% of FPL squads, but his net ownership has dropped in four of the last five Gameweeks even though he’s produced attacking returns in every single one of them.

He was sharp and hungry at Goodison, forcing Mason Holgate (£4.8m) into the error that led to the first goal and only being denied further joy by the excellence of Pickford.

Watkins is comfortably in the top four for points among FPL strikers and is in far better form than the two players – Jamie Vardy (£10.3m) and Patrick Bamford (£6.4m) – directly above him.

His relative lack of appeal is odd, therefore, although Saturday night’s star turn has meant an early, if modest, upturn in owners for the Double Gameweek to come.

FPL’s most popular goalkeeper, Emi Martinez (£5.4m and 40%), has also experienced a slight drop in owners while bringing in 13 points to Watkins’ 33 over the same time frame.

Villa have kept just one clean sheet in eight matches now, with managers relying on save points and the odd bonus morsel to justify their investment in a keeper who doesn’t even offer a cheap price tag these days – only four stoppers cost more.

Dignety At All Times

Ownership levels on Merseyside have been a bit more explicable, with Calvert-Lewin way down on his 4.7 million peak when averaging a goal a game across the first 11 Gameweeks.

His strike against Villa was only his second since Gameweek 23, but he’s actually scored twice in his last four starts – relatively promising form for the pair of fixtures to come.

Midfielder James Rodriguez (£7.7m) had also been showing some potential following his latest return from injury, with a goal and an assist across the previous four matches, but he picked up a calf issue during the warm-up on Saturday to frustrate his 8.9% ownership.

Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti seemed unconcerned about the issue post-match, however:

I think he had a little problem. He was not comfortable to play. I think he is going to play in the next game. It was a really small problem.

At the back, Lucas Digne (£6.1m) was the stand-out option on display, if only because of his attacking threat.

The full-back’s corner, which led to Calvert-Lewin’s goal, produced the Frenchman’s first assist since Gameweek 24, although he has brought in five sets of clean sheet points since then to pay some of his Fantasy way.

Shutting down West Ham or a not yet beach-ready Villa might be beyond Digne in Gameweek 35, but his attacking threat remains – only Aaron Cresswell (£5.6m) can better him for assists (10 v 9) this season.

Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Coleman, Godfrey, Holgate, Digne; Allan, Andre Gomes (Delph 70); Richarlison, Iwobi (Bernard 76), Sigurdsson (King 82); Calvert-Lewin.

Aston Villa XI (4-2-3-1): Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Targett; Douglas Luiz, McGinn; Traore (Ramsey 88), Barkley, El Ghazi (Davis 90+2); Watkins.

Chelsea 2-0 Fulham

  • Goals: Kai Havertz (£8.2m) x2
  • Assists: Mason Mount (£7.3m), Timo Werner (£9.2m)
  • Bonus Points: Havertz x3 Andreas Christensen (£4.7m) x2 Thiago Silva (£5.6m) x1

Kai Havertz (£8.2m) made a belated pitch for Fantasy relevance with a clinical display against nearly-relegated Fulham.

The Germany international scored twice from two shots to double his goals tally for the season and continue his impressive form as a false nine in coach Thomas Tuchel’s current tactical set-up.

Kai Fidelity

Keeping faith in Havertz has certainly proved fruitful for his 3.3% ownership, with a second double-digit haul in three Gameweeks, although a net 3,244 managers chose to sell him on this week to miss out on 16 points.

Their logic, while ill-timed, was sound enough.

Tuchel’s liking for rotation has meant the midfielder being in and out of the starting line-up despite his recent uptick in form (he has five attacking returns from as many starts).

And although Chelsea do have two fixtures in Gameweek 35, they’re against Manchester City and Arsenal, with the schedule that follows – a blank, Leicester and then Aston Villa – barely ramping up the allure.

That will likely stifle interest in Blues assets across the board. Not that there was a great deal of that to begin with.

The side’s most popular player, Mason Mount (£7.3m), set up the first goal to bring in a second assist in four Gameweeks for his 20.2% ownership before leaving the fray in the 75th minute with what looked like an injury.

Tuchel played down the extent of that after the game:

It was my decision to take him off. There was not any doctor or physio who told me to take him off. I saw him landing hard, but it was the moment anyway when we wanted to take him off if we had the chance, at around 70 minutes. So there was a bit of playing it safe with him, but I haven’t been given any new information about a problem for him, so he should be fine for Wednesday.

Wednesday refers, of course, to the Champions League tie against Real Madrid that is tipped, slightly, in Chelsea’s favour.

Tuchel made five changes to the team with that in mind, the most hurtful probably being the rest for Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.9m), whose 8% ownership missed out on a third straight clean sheet and a league-leading 18th (equal with Manchester City) for the season.

At least both Chelsea’s Double Gameweek opponents will also be in continental action, so current owners of Blues stars are unlikely to ditch their men until the blank that follows, while new investors might just steer clear altogether.

As for Fulham, the end gets ever nigher and although their first-half display on Saturday probably warranted a goal or two, the lack of a cutting edge and a six-match run without a clean sheet keeps their players way off the Fantasy radar.

Chelsea XI (3-4-2-1): Mendy; Christensen, Silva, Zouma; Chilwell (Alonso 81), James, Gilmour, Mount (Abraham 76); Havertz, Ziyech (Kante 66); Werner.

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Areola; Aina, Andersen, Adarabioyo, Robinson; Lemina (Carvalho 78), Anguissa; Decordova-Reid, Lookman, Cavaleiro (Onomah 78); Maja (Mitrovic 81).

Don't really see the appeal in Havertz vs. Man City.

Looked good yesterday but he's only scored against Southampton (1), Palace (1), Fulham (2), Morecambe (1) and Barnsley (3).

      May not even start.

Also McCarthy is not playing the next two fixtures. Forster will play.. (https://www.hampshirelive.news/sport/football/football-news/southampton-goalkeeper-liverpool-ralph-hasenhuttl-5366361)

Sounds like you're actively trying to drop points with that transfer.

Selling Jota for a double of SOU/WBA? Even off the bench he'd have decent odds...

Zaha is even a little bit of an injury concern. I know they play SHU but a Palace defender is not the one.

        - If Shaw gets his rest against Roma, definitely him over Maguire
        - Auba is returning from sickness period, if he plays in midweek expect him to rest for one of the doubles
        - Vardy is too expensive for what we delivers at the moment, Vardy to Watkins probably
        - Ward-Prowse to one of Zaha/Jota/Mane/Greenwood

          Shaw - totally agree
Auba a risk I'm still undecided about

I can see why United fans are yellow and gold until Glazers are forced to sell. But that deals with the relative fortunes of just one club.

I suspect many would live with the Man City or Chelsea model.

Of the 92 English professional football clubs there must be 80 with financial issues. For a sport awash in television money, merchandise, sponsorship, season ticket sales and image rights there's clearly a deeper issue.

In the rush for glory and financial reward, almost all clubs are guilty of paying players far too much money.

That's the major structural re-structure that the business of football requires.

It's about money which is where I think you're missing the point entirely. It's about the fact they don't really care about the club and haven't been actively trying to improve it either.

You're taking about clubs paying players too much. Is that an issue? Yes. But if you don't right now they'll just move onto a club who will - so they kind of have to in order to stay competitive.

Only something like a salary cap will stop it spiraling even more, but then the players may just opt to play abroad instead...

I get that and I think its time for fundamental change.

It's gone to far to the players and sovereign wealth projecting soft power from oil and gas reserves, or Wall Street and City of London merchant bankers or Russian funds to run an elite club these days.

All lower leagues are scrabbling around in the mire and the Championship is stupid money to players too.

I agree that the issue runs deep and the entire system needs overhauling, but that doesn't happen without disruption on a level that can't be ignored.

My mate in my WhatsApp group has missed the last few deadlines.(He's essentially been a dead team since GW30.)

We were messaging him before the deadline to warn him.

As he had Bale captained each of those weeks I jokingly suggested "Switch your captain from Bale and watch him score a hattie".

Fortunately his WhatsApp was muted and he missed it again. On 70 points this week!

Next season, can FPL take hits into consideration when awarding the highest score of the gameweek?

I’m fed up of seeing teams that have taken 50+ point hits getting their moment of glory by being highest scoring team before hits.

It’s kind of an insult to players who may have scored a few points less but actually earned more overall points after hits were deducted than the guy in first place for this GW.

              Message sent:
              ——————————————————————————
Next season, can FPL take hits into consideration before awarding the highest points of the gameweek?

It’s discouraging seeing teams that have taken 50+ point hits, and have deliberately made double digit transfers during the week, getting rewarded by being listed as the highest points scoring team of the week.

Usually, once you actually deduct the points hits these teams have taken, they are nowhere near the highest score of the week that’s been earned legitimately by a team that has maybe only taken one points hit or none at all.

These teams are also often only a few weeks old or are set up deliberately for a specific gameweek.

This week is a prime example of this, with the current GW leader (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/8136723/event/34 ) having taken 68 points worth of hits, yet being top of the charts because he scored 117 points (when in actual fact his true score is 49 points).

It feels like a huge insult to players who may have scored less points in total, but actually earned more overall points after hits were deducted than the guy in first place for this GW.

The current system seems to reward people who are deliberately trying to manipulate the system to get their 15 minutes of FPL fame, rather than managers who are operating within the spirit the game was intended to be played in.

              Thank you

Although, in my leagues, the players who have perennially finished nowhere near the top are killing it this season, and all the usual suspects, who have been with me pushing each other for the title every season are all struggling.

          I don’t think that’s coincidence.

This season has been like no other season and there does seem to be evidence that managers who usually do nothing and finish with horrible OR are flying high.

As proof of this, my fantasy draft team is nearly 300 points in the lead. I missed out on all the top options up front so have had to shop in the bargain basement all season. Guys who got Kane, Son, Vardy, Mo, Bruno etc are struggling.( I had KdB who was my only big hitter, but jumped on Gundogan early).

The big hitters just really haven’t covered themselves in glory this season.

In draft it’s easier because you don’t get penalised for points hits, so I can make tons of them.

But, my point is that I got lucky in that I actually invested heavy in TAA and Robertson early in the draft, so I ended up with KdB and what most people would have considered to be good to mediocre players in mid and up front.

This meant that I was having to scour the waiver wire every week to pick up players who had good form and fixtures. If I had to replicate that in normal FPL I’d have needed a WC or taken multiple hits every week.

Same in my league. The two guys on top never come close to challenging for the title and this year they're clear on top. They pulled away at the start of the season and nobody could claw them back.

Assuming the increase in injuries and rotation is correct (and I would agree it is) we therefore can suspect that to increase and prepare our benches accordingly. So will the chance element does increase, it’s still within our ability to have a degree of control

This season is an anomaly (I hope). Covid & stadium invasion posteponements, inconsistency of refereeing & VAR (witness the glut of soft 'handball' pens given in the opening weeks of the season that were quickly phased out). Add to that the congestion of fixtures this season probably leading to even more rotation roulette than usual.

Imagine Glazers sell, they just going to be replaced by another filthy rich owner who will treat club like a business.

Days of local chippy owners investing in clubs are long gone and United fans need to be careful of what they wish for.

I’d like to see a move more towards the German ownership style, it has really helped elevate the quality & competitiveness of the Bundesliga - as evidenced by the same club winning it for a ninth straight year... wait - what?

So what? That has nothing to do with ownership model. In Italy Juventus, in France PSG (private owners just like in England) have won it several years in a row. Even in Spain, how many different clubs win the competition?

The difference is in the competitive platform and how the PL distributes the big TV money. If the PL did the same as in Spain, Germany or Italy, it would have the same end result.

How in the name of Christ would they manage that?

They’d need to be releasing teamsheets in about an hour 😆

Part of me thinks they might put it on without telling anyone to avoid the protest returning but I think the players have gone home and I think chances have moved from slim to vanishing. Will keep an eye out for news flash though!

All of me tells me that Sky TV will not allow the biggest game of the PL football calendar to be played without maximum coverage and build up

Would be nice if the game is over and we are not even aware of that 😆

Well Betfair was claiming that it will happen. Probably some bookies things to lure you into betting

Betfair have nothing to do with what the PL & Sky Sports are going to arrange

No it would be the main kick off at 4.30 to accommodate sky sports.. team sheets should be out in a couple of hours then 🙂

      Need your thoughts here:
      Mendy
      Shaw - Rudiger - TAA
      Bruno - Maddison - Son - Jota
      Nacho - Laca - Kane

      Forster - Lingard - Dallas - Coady

Now I have 7 DGW players and 2 FT but they are all blanking GW36. To evade this I'm making one FT this week and 2 FT (probably 3 with -4 hit) to have 11 players.

      I need your thoughts:
      1) 1 FT: Laca to DCL in GW35, and get other 2 players in GW36
      2) 2 FT: Laca to DCL and Maddison to JWP/Zaha in GW35 and get another player in GW36

Just switching from DGW35 players with no GW36 fixtures to others playing both weeks.

        1 sounds better

Ward Prowse/Zaha probably wont provide anything more than maddison

Lost 5 players due to the protest yesterday, but somehow still manage to stay at rank 662.
If I can finish in top 500 like I did last season, it would be an amazing achievement. I will have to start to consider myself a good FPL player tbh.
      Finger crossed

Spurs really should look into signing Bale permanently, hire an army of physios to accompany him 24-7 and sell Kane for 100m+

They’d still easily finish 5th-7th which is all they are ever going to do anyways

Lads some advice appreciated. Second in me league for 1000 quid for winner. This game week I gained 40 points and I'm only 10 points behind now. I have my FH left but I'm trying to figure out if I should try maximize points in the dgw or use it for the blank. He will have to take hits for the blank week and I should have 11 with no hits...

      Team:
      Martinez sanchez
      Shaw, white, targett, castagne, Phillips
Mo, bruno, lingard, son, havertz(will probably transfer out)
      Kane, watkins, nacho

No point planning transfers or tinkering with FH teams till we know what's happening with United Pool. Pool getting a double in 35 and no blank for United in 36 changes a lot of things.

Its season over if Pool have DGW,played FH already for GW35 have 3 Pool + Pereira and took hit to prepare for BGW36...

Will end up with worse team + FH wasted

If you ask, a majority would say they wasted their chips even when they used them during normal circumstances.

Yeah I kept my FH all season because I had a feeling with everything was going on it might be required late on. Hopefully it will be the difference now in me winning my league.
