Mount and Rodriguez injury updates as Watkins hits good form ahead of Gameweek 35

Everton 1-2 Aston Villa

  • Goals: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.5m) | Ollie Watkins (£6.5m), Anwar El Ghazi (£5.2m)
  • Assists: Lucas Digne (£6.1m) | Bertrand Traore (£5.8m)
  • Bonus Points: Digne x3 Watkins x2 Calvert-Lewin x2

Some key Fantasy assets warmed up for Double Gameweek 35 with a Goodison Park audition involving one of the more breathless first halves of the season.

The score was 1-1 at the interval, with the goals coming from FPL favourites Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.5m) and Ollie Watkins (£6.5m).

But it needed a stellar Jordan Pickford (£4.8m) performance and the frame of his goal (twice) to deny Aston Villa going in at half-time with a deserved lead before a late Anwar El Ghazi (£5.2m) strike secured the points for the visitors.

Ollie Jolly, Emi Less So

Both teams have two Gameweek 35 fixtures as they’ll face each other again once Everton have travelled to West Ham and Villa entertained Manchester United next Sunday.

Crucially, the sides also have a Gameweek 36 match, with Dean Smith’s men going to Crystal Palace and the Toffees at home to Sheffield United.

All of that ramps up the appeal of their main players, which only serves to highlight the curious case of Watkins in recent weeks.

The Villa striker is found in 25.6% of FPL squads, but his net ownership has dropped in four of the last five Gameweeks even though he’s produced attacking returns in every single one of them.

He was sharp and hungry at Goodison, forcing Mason Holgate (£4.8m) into the error that led to the first goal and only being denied further joy by the excellence of Pickford.

Watkins is comfortably in the top four for points among FPL strikers and is in far better form than the two players – Jamie Vardy (£10.3m) and Patrick Bamford (£6.4m) – directly above him.

His relative lack of appeal is odd, therefore, although Saturday night’s star turn has meant an early, if modest, upturn in owners for the Double Gameweek to come.

FPL’s most popular goalkeeper, Emi Martinez (£5.4m and 40%), has also experienced a slight drop in owners while bringing in 13 points to Watkins’ 33 over the same time frame.

Villa have kept just one clean sheet in eight matches now, with managers relying on save points and the odd bonus morsel to justify their investment in a keeper who doesn’t even offer a cheap price tag these days – only four stoppers cost more.

Dignety At All Times

Ownership levels on Merseyside have been a bit more explicable, with Calvert-Lewin way down on his 4.7 million peak when averaging a goal a game across the first 11 Gameweeks.

His strike against Villa was only his second since Gameweek 23, but he’s actually scored twice in his last four starts – relatively promising form for the pair of fixtures to come.

Midfielder James Rodriguez (£7.7m) had also been showing some potential following his latest return from injury, with a goal and an assist across the previous four matches, but he picked up a calf issue during the warm-up on Saturday to frustrate his 8.9% ownership.

Toffees boss Carlo Ancelotti seemed unconcerned about the issue post-match, however:

I think he had a little problem. He was not comfortable to play. I think he is going to play in the next game. It was a really small problem.

At the back, Lucas Digne (£6.1m) was the stand-out option on display, if only because of his attacking threat.

The full-back’s corner, which led to Calvert-Lewin’s goal, produced the Frenchman’s first assist since Gameweek 24, although he has brought in five sets of clean sheet points since then to pay some of his Fantasy way.

Shutting down West Ham or a not yet beach-ready Villa might be beyond Digne in Gameweek 35, but his attacking threat remains – only Aaron Cresswell (£5.6m) can better him for assists (10 v 9) this season.

Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Coleman, Godfrey, Holgate, Digne; Allan, Andre Gomes (Delph 70); Richarlison, Iwobi (Bernard 76), Sigurdsson (King 82); Calvert-Lewin.

Aston Villa XI (4-2-3-1): Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Targett; Douglas Luiz, McGinn; Traore (Ramsey 88), Barkley, El Ghazi (Davis 90+2); Watkins.

Chelsea 2-0 Fulham

  • Goals: Kai Havertz (£8.2m) x2
  • Assists: Mason Mount (£7.3m), Timo Werner (£9.2m)
  • Bonus Points: Havertz x3 Andreas Christensen (£4.7m) x2 Thiago Silva (£5.6m) x1

Kai Havertz (£8.2m) made a belated pitch for Fantasy relevance with a clinical display against nearly-relegated Fulham.

The Germany international scored twice from two shots to double his goals tally for the season and continue his impressive form as a false nine in coach Thomas Tuchel’s current tactical set-up.

Kai Fidelity

Keeping faith in Havertz has certainly proved fruitful for his 3.3% ownership, with a second double-digit haul in three Gameweeks, although a net 3,244 managers chose to sell him on this week to miss out on 16 points.

Their logic, while ill-timed, was sound enough.

Tuchel’s liking for rotation has meant the midfielder being in and out of the starting line-up despite his recent uptick in form (he has five attacking returns from as many starts).

And although Chelsea do have two fixtures in Gameweek 35, they’re against Manchester City and Arsenal, with the schedule that follows – a blank, Leicester and then Aston Villa – barely ramping up the allure.

That will likely stifle interest in Blues assets across the board. Not that there was a great deal of that to begin with.

The side’s most popular player, Mason Mount (£7.3m), set up the first goal to bring in a second assist in four Gameweeks for his 20.2% ownership before leaving the fray in the 75th minute with what looked like an injury.

Tuchel played down the extent of that after the game:

It was my decision to take him off. There was not any doctor or physio who told me to take him off. I saw him landing hard, but it was the moment anyway when we wanted to take him off if we had the chance, at around 70 minutes. So there was a bit of playing it safe with him, but I haven’t been given any new information about a problem for him, so he should be fine for Wednesday.

Wednesday refers, of course, to the Champions League tie against Real Madrid that is tipped, slightly, in Chelsea’s favour.

Tuchel made five changes to the team with that in mind, the most hurtful probably being the rest for Cesar Azpilicueta (£5.9m), whose 8% ownership missed out on a third straight clean sheet and a league-leading 18th (equal with Manchester City) for the season.

At least both Chelsea’s Double Gameweek opponents will also be in continental action, so current owners of Blues stars are unlikely to ditch their men until the blank that follows, while new investors might just steer clear altogether.

As for Fulham, the end gets ever nigher and although their first-half display on Saturday probably warranted a goal or two, the lack of a cutting edge and a six-match run without a clean sheet keeps their players way off the Fantasy radar.

Chelsea XI (3-4-2-1): Mendy; Christensen, Silva, Zouma; Chilwell (Alonso 81), James, Gilmour, Mount (Abraham 76); Havertz, Ziyech (Kante 66); Werner.

Fulham XI (4-2-3-1): Areola; Aina, Andersen, Adarabioyo, Robinson; Lemina (Carvalho 78), Anguissa; Decordova-Reid, Lookman, Cavaleiro (Onomah 78); Maja (Mitrovic 81).

I've been absolutely destroyed by last minute postponements this season.

I really do hate how they make it so that postponed games go into entirely new weeks rather than just keep them in their original weeks. I understand why but it's so frustrating and there's absolutely nothing that can be done to prepare for it either.

I think most readers would be of the opinion it's just part of the game and that it reminds us all not to neglect our benches.

I havent neglected my bench but have still been punished! I have 6 players from Liv and Utd and 2 of them were on my bench. Given that one postponed game can wipe out 6 players for some people, even a good playing bench can only cover 3 of those so you still get screwed. Its completely unfair

Swings and roundabouts though as those with Liverpool and Man U players should be set up beautifully for the next couple of weeks.

Same for everyone so its fair.. There is always some risk in tripleling up on a team and having six players in the same match. Everyone knows the saying that you shouldnt captain and vice a player from the same fixture

This is one of the dumbest comments Ive ever read. Of course it was very silly of me not to anticipate the game being postponed!

Its not the same for everyone!! My mini league leader has no Liverpool or Utd players and there are no doubt thousands of other managers who only have maybe 2-3. I have 6!

As for your other silly comment about tripling up. Given that you only get 1 free transfer a week, you cant change your team every gameweek and have completely different players!

Liverpool have great fixtures hence why good managers have targetted their players and already own 2-3 of them. Utd players are also clearly good options and Bruno is the highest points scorer in the game. So this is why these players are in peoples teams!

There is nothing you can do about the fixture schedules and you arent going to avoid these players just because Utd and Liverpool play each other.

              1. Yes that is unlucky. Not the same thing as fair though
              2. Doesnt make sense at all. Yes you have 1 transfer a week that you at one point chose tho spend on a triple up. (Its a risk but with big rewards and I often triple up on teams)
              3. Agreed! Liverpool has had good fixtures and good managers have targeted them, so my question to you is; How come you be behind a player who has 0 man utd and liverpool players( not a good manager in your own words) 😉
              4. How would you make it more fair? Get the points in gw 34 even though the game is played in lets say 37?

What happened yesterday is not unlucky, it is unfair. There is a difference.

Bad luck is normal events that happen quite regularly within matches throughout the season such as defenders losing clean sheets in injury time to teams scoring with their only shot of the game, your captain blanking after missing chance after chance etc.

There is nothing unfair or unjust however about such events and its just variance.

Unfairness is having 6 of your squad wiped out because a match is postponed leaving you physically unable to cover them with subs as you only get 3 while other managers who only have say 2-3 players are less effected and those with no players are completely unscathed.

One possible solution would be that when events such as postponements occur after the gameweek deadline that effect more players than you can cover with subs, those players should at least be awarded 2pts each.

So if 6 players cant play because of the postponement, 3 of them should get 2pts each with the other 3 being replaced with subs.

At the end of the day FPL is supposed to be a fair game based on real life events. You wouldnt have a situation were some teams only get to play 36 games instead of 38 as it wouldnt be fair.

So you shouldnt have a situatuon in FPL were some managers are unfairly penalised.

Sorry but you have gone over the top and will realise it later.

Sure, you have reason to be mighty peeved because a random and unpredictable event has screwed your team up. It does happen occasionally, if it had been a violent hailstorm causing a postponement, would you still call it unfair?

What it is, is unlucky. Same unlucky as managers who had their teams and plans screwed by Covid postponements. Same unlucky as my mate had, who wildcarded in GW34 and not only has United players missing this week but probably has problems next week if Liverpool get a DGW and he has no easy way to get Salah without at least one hit.

You can't correct it. You might like the 2 points idea but what about those teams that have been screwed the week after, as mentioned above? Managers have their plans wrecked by outside events regularly (especially this season); this just happens to be a fairly extreme example.

It's random, it's unfortunate, there's nothing you could or should have done to avoid it and you need to live with it. That's what it amounts to.

I dont think Ive gone over the top. A violent hailstorm and the other examples you have given re covid postponements etc are also unfair and not just bad luck simply because they give other managers who were on the right side of it an unfair advantage. It's not an even playing field is the point I'm making.

General bad luck in the game within an even playing field is a different thing entirely and is just variance.

You make a transfer and pick one player over another and the player you pick blanks 5 times in a row while the other does well is unlucky but you made that choice to pick that player and there is nothing unfair or unjust about it.

For sure, my 2pt idea may have logistical issues and may not be a solutuon but there must be one.

Perhaps limit the amount of players you can have from 1 team to 2 players instead of 3 or have a squad of 17 instead of 15 so you would have an extra couple of subs.

                    There must be a solution.

I dont agree with you on the fair argument. This is a totally random event that pretty much no one could have predicted. If you gain or lose on it comes down to luck, hence why you have been unlucky. Fpl is fun because it is a perfect mixture of luck and skill. In this case it is almost 100% luck which makes it no fun and I completely understand why you are angry. However it still has nothing to do with fairness. That is because no one could exploit the fact that the match was not going to play wich would have made it unfair. People have just been lucky, having players from their benches (like me). That does not mean that I should be punished for having luck.
I like your idea with the 2 points though, if postponememts take place after the deadline. Its a good idea, might be e bit hard to get into the game but hey, might be a solution.

Stop moaning. "Fairness" has nothing to do with it as it affects everyone who had United and Pool assets. It's really no different than people hauling you don't own while your team misfires. Sh*t happens.

            Another completely ignorant misguided comment!

It does not effect everyone as Ive just pointed out to somebody else. It effects a lot of people to varying degrees yes but not everyone the same! I had 6 players involved, thousands of others will have had less and others like my mini league leader none at all!

And it is absolutely not the same as non owned players hauling, not in the slightest. My players didnt even get the chance to haul as they werent allowed to play!

Other players hauling is just normal variance which happens all season but its fair and not in any way unjust.

Having 6 of your squad wiped out by one postponed game who cant be replaced by subs as you only get 3 whilst other managers come through unscathed or not as badly effected is unfair.

            Get some perspective!

It depends when the game is re-sheduled for. If its this gameweek or next gameweek then at least those with 6 Utd and Liverpool can at leaat have some kind of advantage.

However, if its not played until after Uniteds blank week which I fear it may do then the advantage has completely gone and nothing can be salvaged from events yesterday as other teams then have plenty of time to bring in those players using free transfers.

A lot of people are going to look like geniuses this season, and a lot like rubbish managers, when in actual fact the twists of fortune have created that impression more than anything else.

I've been slaughtered this GW with 6 in the MUN-LIV fixture, also having Holding, Martinez, Dallas, Bamford - with no Son/Bale.

Yeah. I don't moan often but this one postponement seriously hurts me in FanTeam where I have a lot of money on the line.

And I also got burned earlier in the season in GW16 in FanTeam where the Spurs and City postponements left me fielding 5 players.

I kinda just want this season to be over now. Dust myself off, play Euro fantasy for some fun and then come back with a greater focus.

Yeah it's a strange season. I felt like a lot of my hard work planning for nice doubles got ruined by random week postponements and other high variance things. Not to say I haven't made mistakes though.

The other thing was some of the big doubles occurring unusually early. Most people felt compelled to "attack the doubles" similarly to what is normally done for big doubles near the end of the season. But this year, that meant getting stuck with players who weren't good after the doubles.

Also, in addition to the random postponements, we've had so many injuries that were not disclosed prior to deadlines. While some aspects of this season will not persist, I'm afraid the surprise injuries will become the new normal.

Usually I would agree with the comments about maintaining a strong squad, but between Covid postponements, d***heads invading stadiums and the scourge of VAR, this season has been far too random to prepare for in any reasonable way. Just have to hope it's an anomaly rather than the shape of things to come.

VAR has cost us all points. But equally, we gain when our rivals have a goal ruled out through VAR. I don't see how this should affect your preparation. It's the same for everyone.

Well, what about the glut of soft 'handball' pens that were given in the early weeks of the season, then abruptly stopped as soon as it became clear how much everyone hated the rule? Both VAR and application of the rules have been applied very inconsistently this season.

I'm not going to defend some of those terrible VAR decisions but my point is that these aren't bits of bad luck that only you have been punished with. We have ALL lost possible points due to disallowed decisions. And as I said, some decisions (good or bad) will have benefited you by having them go against your rivals. Swings and roundabouts.

I'm the same. I captained Kane against Fulham - called off. Had KDB, Stones, Dias against Everton - called off. Bruno, Salah, Shaw, Phillips in yesterday's game - called off.

I lost a lot points cause of this. But without trying to brag, I'm currently top10k. As others have said, it's just a part of the game and talk of 'fairness' and 'integrity' makes no sense. Not to say you're whinging but it seems some users on here use stuff like this as an excuse for bad decisions. It's 38 weeks, not 3/4 where there have been the odd postponement.

It's only a game though and there is always next season! And if the fixtures are rescheduled to DGW35 for Liverpool and GW36 for yesterday's fixture, that's also pretty good too.

I definitely had it worse than you though.

In FanTeam GW16, I fielded 5 players after losing at the last minute 3 Spurs, Godfrey, and double City defense. Then I had 5 players in the game from last night - Greenwood, Fernandes, TAA, Salah, Jota.

In FPL I had 6 from last night compared to your 4. So yeah, it does matter. You lost at least 3 fewer players than I did from pure luck.

Point is, it IS unfair. I know that random unfairness is part of the game but that doesn't mean that some people aren't affected more or less favorably than others.

        1. Qaiss

I'm not sure you have to be honest. I've also lost out on Son/Martinez/Grealish points earlier in the season due to postponements. There's probably been more that I can't remember as well.

I don't play fanteam so I can't say but I lost all those players in FPL and had no one coming on from the bench. 2 of those 4 yesterday I had were on the bench already and were about to come on. That is just how the game goes, there will always be crazy amounts of luck in FPL. It's 38 gameweeks, not 3/4 where there has been 1 postponement or so in each. Having a strong bench this season was always necessary.

At the risk of repeating what's already said, your bench can be as strong as you like, but if a postponed fixture costs you 6 players, it doesn't help much.

Who do you reckon the best DEF under 4.8m is to bring in?

    - Christensen/Rudiger (tough fixtures, best defense)
    - Holgate (not nailed?)
    - Lowton (GW35 tough, but 36 & 38 are great)
    - Coufal (their defense is still sketchy?)

Omitted Holding as already have & Phillips as already tripled up.

If I knew Christensen would play I'd get him as he is a bonus magnet. Something to cheer on too since I support the team lol.

I’ve not suffered hugely due to postponements myself but I am fed up of double and blank GWs now. They’re ruining the fun for me - I like picking the players I like not just the small pool who do double / don’t blank or whatever.

Very minor complaint in the grand scheme of things though.

Dele Alli and Harry Kane when they first came into the game really cheap. Kane after that just for all those points.

Fuchs, Mahrez and Vardy in Leicester's title winning season.

Fabianski for being a saves and BAPS monster for a number of seasons

Suarez and Sturridge when Liverpool were firing (Suarez was one of the easiest (c) ever tbh)

It looks simple now for the Liverpool - United setup right?

Liverpool's game vs WBA gets moved into midweek GW35. And then they play United in GW36.

Double for Liverpool in 35 and no blank for United in 36. This could yet be okay since I have 3 of each.

Yes I can't see any other viable options to rearrange yesterday fixture. With BB and FH chips left to play it's works against me however.

Where to turn to make up a 50 point deficit (courtesy of this gameweek!)?

    My team:

    Martinez
    Castagne Dunk Holding Dawson Phillips
    Salah Son Bruno Greenwood Lingard
    Kane Nacho Watkins

    His team:

    Lloris
    Trent Shaw Evans Konsa Targett
    Salah Son Bale Greenwood Lingard

Glad I didn't activate the FH early this week ... have to wait and see now as gw35 might not need the FH

I'm BB, but might not need the FH in GW36 now. I was down to 7 players, but if you United don't blank and Phillips is fit I should be able to field an 11.

Can get this for -8 if Pool get the expected DGW

    Son Bamford Alonso Dallas OUT

    Adams Zaha TAA Robbo IN

    Very tempting

How would you fit Salah into this team? 5.2itb, not adverse to taking a hit.

    Lloris, Sanchez
    TAA, Castagne, Rudiger, Dallas, White
    Bale, Havertz, Jota, Bowen, Saka
    Kane, DCL, Nacho

I would do Havertz to Salah

It's not all bad news. Some of us captained Bale and had Son in the team as well! Up to 35,000 overall so am well chuffed. 85 points, with Lingard still to play. Lost out on Bruno and had Shaw and Jota on the bench. But I'll live with that.

Sorry Pep, I know it's bad to brag but I've had some bad luck recently in FPL so it was nice to get a break. Couldn't help myself.

Haha, no problem mate. Someone deserves luck in a bad gw and why not a bloke who called the Bale C. Good call - points well earned in my book.

    Need some advice here.

What's the best way to get Bruno in:

    A) Kane & Lingard/Jota -> Watkins & Bruno
    B) Azpi & Son -> Mitchell & Bruno

    Martinez
    TAA Azpi Dunk Coady Burn
    Salah Son Lingard Jota Greenwood
    Kane DCL Nacho

    BB35:
    Mendy Forster
    TAA Rudi Coady Shaw Soy
    Bruno Son Lingardinho Greenwood Jota
    Kane Nacho Watkins

    2FT 0.7ITB

Considering Bruno > Salah and Son > Zaha or Lingard > El Ghazi
    Good moves?

Also is Forster > Guaita worth a hit?

Apparently Hassenhuttl said that Forster will play the next 2.

ML rival getting Bale of the bench thanks to the postponement...literally don’t deserve those points if you’re benching him v Sheff U at home!
