Man Utd set for Triple Gameweek 35 as clash with Liverpool is rearranged

Manchester United will have a Triple Gameweek 35 after the Premier League announced that their postponed clash with Liverpool will take place next Thursday.

The Red Devils will also face Aston Villa and Leicester City in the next set of fixtures, with all three of their Gameweek 35 matches taking place in little more than 100 hours.

Jurgen Klopp’s troops will also have a Double Gameweek as a result of today’s announcement.

The soon-to-be-deposed reigning champions will take on Southampton on Saturday before they visit Old Trafford.

United will still blank in Gameweek 36 as a result, while Liverpool will be at home to Championship-bound West Bromwich Albion.

REVISED GAMEWEEK 35 SCHEDULE

MANCHESTER UNITED

Sun 9 May: Aston Villa (A)
Tue 11 May: Leicester City (H)
Thu 13 May: Liverpool (H)

LIVERPOOL

Sat 8 May: Southampton (H)
Thu 13 May: Manchester United (A)

REVISED GAMEWEEK 35 FIXTURE MATRIX

*Thanks to moderator Legomane

WHICH UNITED AND LIVERPOOL ASSETS STAND THE BEST CHANCE OF STARTING ALL OF THEIR GAMEWEEK 35 MATCHES?

Earlier in the week, we had a two-part look at which Double Gameweek 35 players stood the best chance of avoiding a benching in the upcoming set of fixtures.

The article linked below has been revised after today’s announcement and now includes Liverpool, along with an amended entry for Manchester United.

CHANGE OF CHIP STRATEGY/TRANSFER FOCUS?

Liverpool's front four toil at Anfield as Newcastle assets creep onto FPL radar

Today’s announcement was seismic but it doesn’t change some things.

Manchester United, for example, will still blank in Gameweek 36, so the situation remains that any Fantasy managers going all-in on the Red Devils in Triple Gameweek 35 will have to either have a strong bench, an exit plan (possibly involving hits) or an unused chip up their sleeves.

Those on a Free Hit, of course, will have no such worries.

What it does perhaps alter is a greater chance of two or more starts for most of their key players in the upcoming Gameweek, even allowing for a benching along the way.

Liverpool players suddenly become even more attractive – although that was immediately the case as soon as Sunday’s match was postponed and it became clear that the game wouldn’t be rescheduled for Gameweek 34.

A double-header against Southampton and West Bromwich Albion, as had been mooted in some circles, would have been dreamland territory with regards to the Gameweek 35 captaincy and triple captaincy. The fact that United now play thrice, and one of Liverpool’s fixtures is at Old Trafford, may temper interest in Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) and co when it comes to the armband discussions.

But the Reds being one of just five teams who have two fixtures in Triple Gameweek 35 and an unaffected match in Blank Gameweek 36 is a boon for chipless FPL managers and Wildcarders alike who are investing in players for the entire run-in, not just a one-off Gameweek.

While the addition of Liverpool to the Double Gameweek 35 contingent does give chipless managers a greater chance of getting more players out with two games, those FPL bosses with Free Hits and Wildcards in hand still have the advantage of focusing mostly on the next seven days without being too concerned about the decimated schedule in Blank Gameweek 36.

IMPLICATIONS FOR OTHER TEAMS

The best Neto replacements and whether FPL managers should stick with Fernandes

Today’s shock announcement will not just affect Liverpool and United.

It could, first and foremost, also be good news for Leicester City assets.

The Foxes now have an extra day of recovery ahead of their FA Cup final appearance on Saturday 15 May, which could alleviate some of the rotation risk – if there ever was any – for that clash with United. The temptation for Brendan Rodgers to hand some of his key players a breather may partly depend on the results of the weekend fixtures, however, and where they leave his side in their ongoing push for a top-four place.

The game against the Red Devils is also the second of United’s three fixtures (or four, if we include tomorrow’s UEFA Europa League tie against Roma). Would Ole Gunnar Solksjaer perhaps rotate against the Foxes with one eye on Thursday’s clash with Liverpool, then?

Aston Villa, United’s first Triple Gameweek 36 opponents, will also be hoping for similar favours from Solskjaer on Sunday.

Seriously hard GW coming I reckon. Wheat from the chaff and all that.

Heart says Bruno (C). Head says no way.

    The bear case…

    - He’s played every single PL game this year.
    - Only 2x has he played 45 mins or less in any of these games
    - He’s played 86 mins + in the last 20 consecutive GWs.
    - Nowhere near peak form…
    - Any chance he’s waned recently because he’s just knackered? Don’t recall him getting much rest last year either.
    - Blanks in 6 of the last 8. (Non-blanks being only 5 and 10).
    - He’ll surely he’ll be rested for Roma, but then Utd have 3 games in 5 days.
    - Does Ole really need to play him in all 3 games? Utd can’t win the league, and Utd likely only need 1 win from 5 remaining PL games to secure top 4.
    - Irrespective, 2 of the 3 TGW games are Leicester and Liverpool.
    - The other against Villa won’t be a walk in the park.

Is there a strong bull case for Bruno (C)?

I’m glad I already have him but seriously doubt I’ll captain him.

If United had 3 great fixtures, Maguire (C) would be more logical, but captaining a defender with 2 tough fixtures seems like a risk over an attacker. In terms of exp points, you'd expect Maguire to only have maybe 10 over these 3 games whereas someone like Bruno or Salah in 2 games will have expected points of 11-12 in just 2 fixtures

Most of the double or triple GWs usually have a defender as the highest scoring player for the GW

        • 3 Years

Makes sense. And to be honest Maguire is due a goal

      2. F_Ivanovic
        • 8 Years
        2 years, 10 months ago

The only reason a defender can be better in a double/triple GW is because of their guaranteed starts. You get plenty of defenders that haul in SGW just as much as attackers do but 1) predicting a defender haul is more difficult and 2) results bias - you see all the defenders that score double digits and forget about all the ones that score 1-3 points - unless you triple captain Dunk and then vividly remember it. Lots of midfielders/attackers also get double digits but they're also usually more consistent of at least getting something when they don't haul.

If United had 3 great fixtures, Maguire would be a good shout because of his nailedness, but in 3 tough fixtures you'd rather favour the attacker - in spite of United's seeming ability to get 0-0's against the big teams this season I think a lot of that can be attributed to variance.

Agree first two points. What's your thinking for point 3? He's got 2 assists and 2 goals in 33 games. So an attacking return from ~12% of his games.

Just a gut feel and from eye test he has come close to scoring from corners off late, and whenever we are looking for a goal, he usually gets fwd a lot

    Mendy
    TAA Shaw Rudiger
    Salah Bruno(C) Son Lingard Jota

    Forster Vydra Coufal Coady
    2FTs and 0.3ITB

Currently thinking Coady out for a DGW player who plays in GW36 and then using 2 FTs next week to make a full starting XI

    1) Coady to Coleman or Holgate
    2) Coady to Targett

    B) Play Forster

As a long suffering owner I can only say do not go near him

One of the biggest nightmare to own in the game - either concedes, or gets booked when utd keep a CS to ensure he misses baps (Has the most Yellow cards in the game this season) - goes up for every corner & IFK & never scores. If he does score, it gets disallowed

In fact - he'll very probably finally get sent off this week for being that little extra bit slower through tiredness

Absolute abortion of an FPL player

Got him in GW17 instead of the cheaper option Luke Shaw (another genius move this year facepalm)

He had 3 yellow cards in his first 15 games... and picked up 7 yellows in his next 17 - five of those were in clean sheets so you're talking 10-15 points with baps easy. Perfectly good goal disallowed vs Burnley in GW18 too.

He has 78 points to Shaw's 93 in that timeframe - the difference is basically the yellow cards

Yup owned him earlier and all this is true. Overly aggressive when trying to score always resulting in disallowed goal

    A) Vardy + Rudiger > DCL + Maguire (-4)
    B) Vardy + Son > DCL + Fernandes (-4)
    C) Do nothing (and have Son as only SGW playing)

Doing B still means I need to make a transfer in 36 to have 11. Mostly comes down to if Maguire or Fernandes will score 4 more points than Son and/or to cover myself given everyone else will have Bruno

As a Chelski I'm just counting down the minutes. Please score again or hang on.

Would you bench boost this for a -4? Also leaves me with 9 players for BGW 36

    Mendy Guita
    McGuire Rudiger TAA Coufal Godfrey
    Salah Jota Bruno Greenwood Lingard
    Kane Nacho Vydra

    Thanks,

Chelsea have been by far the better team. Madrid experts in Europe though will Chelsea end up regretting not taking their chances.

They should be 3-0 or even 4-0 up by now. Real are going to get at least 1 chance.

        Won't be good enough now - they'll need 2.
