Willock and Wilson on FPL radar ahead of Newcastle’s favourable fixtures

Leicester 2-4 Newcastle

  • Goals: Marc Albrighton (£5.2m), Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.3m) | Joe Willock (£4.7m), Paul Dummett (£4.4m), Callum Wilson x2 (£6.5m)
  • Assists: Jamie Vardy (£10.3m), Ayoze Pérez (£6.0m) | Matt Ritchie x2 (£4.9m)
  • Bonus points: Wilson x3, Iheanacho x2, Albrighton x1

NOT YOUR AVERAGE JOE

A 4-2 win at Leicester on Friday night helped Newcastle assets continue their string of impressive auditions for investment in the last two matches of the campaign.

Steve Bruce’s men face Sheffield United (home) and Fulham (away) in Gameweeks 37 and 38 respectively and can offer form as well as fixtures ahead of that appealing short-term schedule.

The Magpies have won as many points in their last five Premier League matches (10) as they managers in the 15 before that run.

Newcastle have scored in four of those five most recent matches, finding the net at least twice on three occasions.

“We were disappointed last week against Arsenal. But once the big players have returned over the last two months, I think we’ve lost two in 10, something like that. The performances and the big players getting fit makes a difference. We struggled a while with COVID, illness and people being injured. Them coming back has been the real major change.” – Steve Bruce

The 0.2%-owned Joe Willock (£4.7m) has been at the forefront of that, adding his fourth goal in six matches against Leicester. During that time, only Gareth Bale (£9.1m) and Jesse Lingard (£6.6m) have found the net more often.

The Arsenal loanee also became the first Newcastle player to score in four consecutive Premier League matches since Papiss Cisse in April 2012 (six games).

Any concerns about his chances of starting were put to rest by his Friday-night performance as he came into central midfield amid high praise from his manager, who looks set on using him from the beginning more often.

“We’ve brought in Joe because he deserves to start. He’s come off the bench two or three times and we like was he’s done.” – Steve Bruce, speaking pre-match

“We said before the game that he’s forced his way onto the pitch by what he’s done as a sub. He’s a really smashing young player. A wonderful return since we took him in January.” – Steve Bruce

WILSON!

Callum Wilson (£6.5m) is sure to also feature on the Fantasy radar ahead of Gameweek 37 after his brace in Newcastle’s Friday-night win and the fact he has now started two in a row since Bruce phased his return from injury with three substitute appearances.

The former Bournemouth forward now has four goals across his last two starts away from home having generally performed better on the road this season.

In 1,049 minutes at St. James’ Park, Wilson has produced five goals and three assists in 2020/21 while recording seven goals and three assists away from home.

Meanwhile, of the top-six best-scoring FPL forwards this year, Wilson’s total tally of 134 points means he has the best minutes-per-point (15.5).

“When he did his hamstring – being out for two months was difficult. That’s the same with Allan – you can see the difference they bring to the team. He leads the line for us with pace and power and he’s a huge team player too which is vitally important.” – Steve Bruce

“I’m just getting back into the swing of things with being injured for a while. Nice to get my second 90 minutes in a week. We’ll work hard next week and make sure I’m ready for the next game.” – Callum Wilson

Admittedly, there were a few mitigating factors that aided Wilson’s haul at the King Power Stadium.

Leicester were forced to shepherd Newcastle’s increasingly confident attackers without Jonny Evans (£5.6m) at short notice after he picked up a knock in the warm-up.

After his warm-up injury, Leicester retained their 3-4-1-2 shape but had to play Timothy Castagne (£5.8m) as part of the back-three with Marc Albrighton (£5.2m) and Ricardo Pereira (£5.9m) operating at left and right wing-back respectively.

Unable to rely on Evans’ steadying presence, Caglar Söyüncü (£5.3m) and Wesley Fofana (£5.0m) were more error-prone than usual, the former especially culpable on more than one occasion.

Meanwhile, Newcastle’s third and fourth goals came after Brendan Rodgers tried to chase the game by removing the protective presence of Wilfred Ndidi (£4.8m) to introduce Ayoze Pérez (£6.0m).

“We lacked concentration. If you do that against good players, they’ll punish you. Too many mistakes. We weren’t as clean as we could have been.” – Brendan Rodgers

“(Losing Evans was) very disruptive. We’ve always said he’s the brain in our defensive line He’s a great talker. With Caglar and Wesley, they are both fantastic talents but Jonny is the brain in there and he organises them. So, for him to come out was a big blow for us.” – Brendan Rodgers

“He seemed fine in the warm-up but 15 minutes before kick-off he felt discomfort. He’s a warrior so you know if he can’t even give it a go he’s struggling. We’ll see how he is and assess his availability.” – Brendan Rodgers

KEEN AND KEL

Despite Leicester’s slow start on Friday, Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.3m) managed to continue his impressive scoring run once again.

The Leicester forward has now netted 10 Premier League goals since the start of March, the most of any other asset. Meanwhile, the only player to score more goals over this period in Europe’s top five leagues is fellow Nigerian Simy (12 in Serie A).

Furthermore, in claiming two bonus at the King Power Stadium, Iheanacho has collected additional points in six of his last nine Premier League appearances.

Arguably the most impressive element of Iheanacho’s latest score was how he managed to get on the scoresheet despite a relatively quiet performance.

For the second match in a row, Leicester struggled to use their wing-backs to properly stretch the opposition defence and create for the centre-forwards. As a result, both Iheanacho and Jamie Vardy (£10.3m) spent large spells of the match dropping deep and into the channels to try and fashion their own opportunities which, of course, meant they were in dangerous positions much less than usual.

That dynamic will certainly be troubling for those still invested in the Leicester attack ahead of their last three matches of the season: Manchester United (away), Chelsea (away) and Spurs (home).

Leicester City XI (3-4-1-2): Schmeichel; Söyüncü, Fofana, Castagne; Albrighton, Ndidi (Pérez 63′), Tielemans, R Pereira (Thomas 69′); Maddison (N Mendy 77′); Vardy, Iheanacho.

Newcastle United XI (5-3-2): Dúbravka; Ritchie, Dummett, Fernández, Krafth, Murphy; Almirón (Hendrick 88′), Shelvey, Willock (S Longstaff 77′); Saint-Maximin (Joelinton 84′), Wilson.

Castagne went wrong but hindsight is a fine thing

Castagne has offered more in attack than Robbo recently and poor as Leicester defence has been it's been better than Liverpool's and there loss of Evans and repositioning to CB was an unforeseeable double whammy. I'm going to be a touch surprised if Liverpool keep a cs against Southampton.

He certainly took a long time at the beginning of the season when he came back in.

The other issue may be simply the lack of Barnes in the side - there was a really good combination there when they were both hot. The Nacho Vardy combo doesn't offer him the same opportunities and he just hasn't gelled with them.

      Quite viable

Newcastle and Everton are two good fixtures. Newcastle could be a great one. Happy as I was to see Newcastle perform yesterday I think they were flattered by Leicester and that defence is no better than it was. Everton at home in front of fans will be an immense occasion and Kun will be front and centre - Pep loves him as much as anyone. Brighton will be tough.

You wouldn't be getting Greenwood in for a minus 4 surely?

Wouldn't fancy WH attack against Brighton in 36 but 37/38 look good for sure. Guess Antonio.

Personally planning to hold Nacho for 38 match anyway (benched 37). Spurs defence is one of the worst in the league really.

I still would have 11 for 36 if I get Greenwood. He will then play a demotivated Fulham and an on the beach Wolves in 37 and 38. The Aguero pick seems so good, especially with Newcastle next. And that is the only way to get him. Or maybe I am getting too nostalgic and Antonio is more sensible.

              Dubious about beached sides theory

The last 2 games will be wild rides with teams playing in front of crowds for the first time since forever. Teams will be up I"m pretty certain.

Also curious to see how OGS deals with EL final. That is by some distance the most important match of his managerial career. Tricky to prepare the side in the lead up. United are among the most beached sides after all.

Likely getting Kun but find it hard to justify 🙂

How's everyone's seasons going? I've had a shocker myself but been enjoying it since Christmas rising from 3.4m in GW16 to around 500k now. With FH still in hand for next week I'm hoping I can maybe make a push for 100k and make up a 66 point gap to third in my ML. Nice to finish on a positive note!

Had a great start and was early in top 50k and then reached top 5k around gameweek 20. Started aiming and hoping for a top 1k season but then had like 9 red arrows in 11 gameweeks and fell back to 50k. I havent enjoyed this season and its been draining, just try to ride it and maybe get a top 20k rank at this point and take a decision if its worth playing next season.

Looks highly unlikely. Was so easy to reach though. I was just 15 points behind before GW 31 and decided to go Maddison over Lingard. Maddison got zero that GW. And Lingard got 14.

Not much movement in rank since GW20, since then it has been couple of small green arrows followed by a big red and so on. Would really be happy to get green arrows in rest of the GWs.

Bale hatty last week was much needed break.

Meh season. At 87k. Dreadful start was around 4m after 8 weeks. Selling Son in GW2 was a game changer i think plus a bad TC and BB. All about trying to keep a 5 figure rank and top 1k HOF rank.

Same thing happened around Christmas. Went from 3.3m to 340k. Then last month I missed the deadline and didn’t confirm free hit and got brutally punished in the blank week. Essentially ending my lovely run. So I took a month off from the game.

Apart from becoming a hit maniac over the last 3 weeks, I've had a great season. Transfers came naturally earlier in the season and the game almost felt easy.

Recently, instead of going with my gut, I've gone into fomo mode with certain players and it's cost me a lot of points. Very uncomfortable with the way I've played from about GW30, but still a chance of a good OR. Will learn from this if I'm ever this high up again.

After a best ever 13k finish last season, started watching the podcasts and was confident of building on it.

Nightmare start, wasted WC early, still found myself around 5.5 million by GW6.

Decided to write it off as an experimental season and play super-agressive with the hits (currently on -108 points so far).

It helped, but progress was slow, by GW16 I was still 2.1mil.

In the Spring wasted my BB but the TV I had built (peaking at 109 mil) finally began to tell and combined with no hits for the last half a dozen GWs I'm currently at 365k, with an oh so sweet FH36 team to come. 100k has almost certainly gone but I'd be delighted with 250k and it has been fun climbing.

But lesson learned, next season 10 hits max and no early WC.

        Same story for me.
Climbed from 5m gw 10 to 250k now. Although, every 50% decision I took , (aside Gundo which I jump early of) was so unlucky.
As you I started listen to podcasts and it figure out to be less effective for me as the other opinionated stressed me out and I then took wrong decision , such as wasting my WC (gw 3) . You can’t really know how teams shape before gw 10 or so, so I won’t bother playing WC before it next season.

For me, I think the podcasts helped as they generally show guys who are confident in their opinions and stick to their guns, even if it's an unpopular view (Blackbox and especially the FPLwire have been great this season).

The problem for me is I spend too much time scrolling the opinions on here and am sucked into the 'groupthink' time and time again. 'Group think' is fine if you're leading, but if you're chasing it's going to be hard to climb if you stick to it. Don't get me wrong, the discussion on here is so valuable but for someone like myself I have to be careful. My wife says, to use one of her Korean phrases, that I have very 'thin ears,' meaning I have no filter and follows others' views too easily. Case in point, I was set on bringing in Bale for his hatrick game over a week in advance, I even fantasised about how it would feel if he got a hatrick (yeah, I'm obsessed, I know). Lateriser said it would be a great play. I was set on it right up to a few hours before the deadline, but of course on here it was considered a 'huge punt,' and after reading and reading and reading on here I bottled it.

I think next season I'm going to try avoiding the forums on here, only watch those two podcasts, and see how I do.

            Yep I fee you.
Although I find the podcasts also clouding your mind. They surely help and give good stats and opinions, it’s just non of those opinion are neutral, some are talking from a possession view (like they have some player and they are favouring him).

Do people think there is there a gameplay reason that you can't use a transfer / carry over any free transfers when you free hit or is it just a "too much effort to code" situation?

The things is, using the FH effectively costs you 4 points, possibly 8.
