Eze and Benteke star as Zaha quiet in Palace win at Sheff Utd

Sheff Utd 0-2 Crystal Palace

  • Goals: Christian Benteke (£5.5m), Eberechi Eze (£5.8m)
  • Assists: Eze, Gary Cahill (£4.5m)
  • Bonus points: Eze x3, Benteke x2, Cahill x2

EAGLE-EYED

It was the differential options that benefitted most from Crystal Palace’s 2-0 win over Sheffield United in Triple Gameweek 35.

Eberechi Eze (£5.8m) was the top-scoring player at Bramall Lane as his assist, goal, clean sheet and three bonus accumulated for a 14-point haul.

While that was his biggest Gameweek score of the season, recorded against the division’s worst side, Eze’s appeal does extend past his most recent outing for Crystal Palace.

His 38 key passes and six assists are both team-leading totals this season while no Palace player can offer better than Eze’s value of 19.5 points per million spent in 2020/21.

Meanwhile, only Wilfried Zaha (£7.2m) has been directly involved in more Premier League goals for the Eagles this season (12, not including Fantasy assists) than Eze (nine, not including Fantasy assists).

As a result, the £5.8m man is just 15 points shy of Zaha’s current season score of 125.

“Yeah (Eze is), very, very good. Difficult period, a bit of a baptism of fire with Chelsea, City, Leicester in a row. Not as easy to get on the ball and show skills. We know that’s the quality he possesses, we preach that we want to see it and we won’t criticise if he tries it and it doesn’t come off. He was bold with the ball, stayed on it, drove forward, and of course, got his reward with an assist and a goal. If you ask me if I’m happy with him this season, absolutely. He’s more than played his part. It’s his first season coming from the Championship and you expect a bit of time taken to adapt, especially with the gulf between the top teams and the bottom. You can’t beat teams anymore by organisation or work rate.” – Roy Hodgson

WIDE OF THE MARK

Despite coming into Triple Gameweek 35 with 11.5% ownership, Zaha was very much on the periphery of Crystal Palace’s Bramall Lane win.

For the third league match in a row, he was deployed on the left-hand side of a front-three rather than handed a centre-forward’s role alongside Christian Benteke (£5.5m).

While that position helped him punish Leicester on the counter-attack in Gameweek 33, Palace’s dictation of play at Sheffield United saw Zaha make less use of space behind the hosts’ defence.

Perhaps influenced by the niggle he carried in the Manchester City game, Zaha’s passing was also less than optimal on Saturday afternoon while he struggled to get the beating of anyone in one-on-ones as well.

John Egan (£4.7m) threw a brave block at Zaha’s 45th-minute shot and Benteke probably should have squared for him in the second half but the closest he came to a return was when substitute Jordan Ayew (£5.6m) lacked a clinical edge at the back post after a sideways pass from the midfielder.

Zaha’s owners will now be looking to the Southampton game for Triple Gameweek 35 rewards although he will need to up his game at St. Mary’s on Tuesday night.

BENTEKKERS

The 1.2%-owned Benteke showed his affinity for away matches once again on Saturday.

In netting Palace’s opener inside the first 66 seconds, the former Liverpool man has now scored three goals in his last five away trips.

It was also his seventh of the campaign from 27 appearances, more than Benteke has managed in 71 appearances across his last three Premier League seasons combined.

And he probably should have come away from Bramall Lane with an even bigger score after Aaron Ramsdale (£4.6m) produced a stunning diving save in the first half to deny his bullet header.

Then, in the second, had he squared for Zaha after pickpocketing John Fleck (£5.6m), he would have almost certainly chalked up a third assist of the season.

Meanwhile, it was a second successive start on the right-hand side of Palace’s front-three for Andros Townsend (£5.5m) who took all but two of their corners.

Finally, Tyrick Mitchell (£3.8m) has started back-to-back Premier League matches for the Eagles for the first time since Gameweek 20. No Palace defender has won more tackles than his 52 this season (78.8% success rate).

Sheffield United XI (3-5-2): Ramsdale; K Bryan (Lundstram 80′), Egan, Basham; Stevens, Fleck, Norwood, Berge (Osborn 60′), Baldock; McGoldrick, Burke (Jebbison 65′).

Crystal Palace XI (4-3-3): Guaita; Mitchell, Cahill, Kouyaté, J Ward; Schlupp (Riedewald 71′), Milivojevic, Eze; Zaha, Benteke, A Townsend (Ayew 75′).

    For rest of season

    A) Kane + Lingard
    B) Son + DCL

    1. Well you know, Triffic

A: Kane will want the golden boot and West Ham need to win all their remaining games.

I’d be tempted with B myself, I imagine I’ll be heavily outnumbered though ! Kane looks knackered and I reckon Lingard has had his purple patch

It’s bit of a coin toss. Kane could scored a brace yesterday but he generally looks knackered fulfilling his defensive duties

But he is going for the golden boot

I’d be going for the form pair which is B particularly with DCL’s next match. Maybe DCL swapped for Antonio or Bamford next match?

I'm thinking of getting a City mid but with a strong first sub to cover a no show (doesn't help with a cameo, however)

Dias or Stones is also a tricky one given that Stones is well-rested after 3 match ban.

Morning all, having been targeting my BB for 35 and then left snookered by the late TGW I’m now left in the dubious position of having only 6 players for 36.

What this does mean is that I can target pretty much anyone for the last 3 GWs. I’m open to playing up to a -16 which would get me a full 11 as long as the players in are nailed and are good to go for the rest of the season.

Who would you look to target?
Thoughts on my list/others you’d look to get in?

    Kane
    Trent
    Son/Bale
    Lingard/Raphinha
    Dallas

I also am underprepared for GW36 and going for a few hits. FWIW, I’m thinking Dallas is essential and the either going Robbo and Raph or Bale/Son and Coufal. Both allow me to keep Bruno although I might risk Pogba instead in which case I have more to spend. I’m still a little tempted by Siggy for SHU but not sure that’s good long term

All depends what goes on over the summer with Ashley/Bruce.

As much as Willock has been immense if Arsenal are wanting 25m for him I think we’ll look elsewhere as that’s probably our full transfer budget. Maybe a second loan?

Lads advice required on a bit of strategy. I'm second in my league by about 5 points. Winner gets 1000 quid. I have my FH left. Opponent hasn't got any chips.

I can get 10 playing in the blank for free and he can get 8 for free.

    A) Should I use FH?
    B) Wait until last gameweek when players could be rested for finals etx

Not a lot of people know his - but the Free Hit chip has to be deployed in a very specific way to maximise its benefit

The real way to do this is to keep it until GW38, then don’t activate it at all - your opponent will never expect this strategy and in this way you can catch him with the all important element of suprise

Guys which 2 transfers would you go for here?

    Castagne to Digne
    Nacho to Antonio
    Saka to Raphinha

I wouldn't be dumping Nacho whilst they're battling for a CL spot, personally.

I'd go the Leicester boys looking dropping those two as well for Dallas and Antonio/Bamford

A and C. Despite my own post below, I'd keep Nacho if it wasn't the obvious route for getting 11 players next week

Price drops have taken the pressure off doing this early, but presume Castagne & Nacho to Dallas and Bamford (-4, to field 11) is a good move?

    Jota, Madison, Greenwood.

All in my team, all will be ditched next week. Have Salah and son.

Who is essential for the run in (in particular gw38)?
Jury is out on Greenwood but might be rested for 38

Hard to tell, probably focus on the teams with something to play for. Can see United having second wrapped up and taking it easy for the EL (Fulham likely down by 37 and Wolves in 38 is a dead rubber)

For most of us QPR fans Eze was our most favourite modern era player after Taarabt.

The guy has so much natural talent and glides on the ball. It's good to see him doing his thing in the Premier League.

There's more to come from him too, destined for far bigger things than Palace that's for sure.

He's such a humble lad, everyone at QPR is genuinely so glad to see him doing well.

Isn’t there some stat where if you ignore Sheffield United he has 1 goal in the last 25 or something?

Sheffield United could go straight into mid table of the championship next season - they are soooo bad

Can’t see him staying at palace much longer , maybe till the end of next season but then onto maybe spurs, Arsenal or United

No doubting he has oodles of talent - but end product mostly seems to be restricted to worldies so far.

Given its Palace he’s had a decent first season. He’s looked way better in the last two with the safety at all costs approach shelved. Put him in a more progressive line up and he could do really nicely

Mendy, Forster owners - anyone worried about a 37 blank too?
Ralph appears to have confirmed that McCarthy starts in 36. He's been doing 2 in a row so could mean 37 as well. Tuchel has tended to play Kepa in the GW after a cup match so could mean both Mendy and Forster blank in 36 and 37.

Take a hit for a playing GK?

Chelsea are not benching Mendy vs. Leicester. We best Leicester and that is Top 4 wrapped up.

      Mendy 100% plays that match.

I'd expect Kepa to play the FA Cup Final vs. Leicester 3 days before as he's the cup keeper. Kepa has previously got the following game and I suppose it could happen - but I think that game is a bit too important.

Not impossible, but that Leicester game is so important.

Good point, thanks. But I guess if he plays Leicester and rested at Villa it might still pay off, albeit that Forster would probably cover 38

Kepa's not a bad GK. If he can play the FAC Final when Chelsea haven't won a trophy since 2019, he can play any game.

Having said that, like you I'd guess Mendy will play.

I guess the flip scenario is that he does play Mendy in 37, Forster also plays and then you're left keeper-less in 38.
Ideal is that they rotate being benched, but given there is a fairly certain blank I'm not sure the risk that it works well is one worth taking.

Yes. Will be taking a hit for a GK in GW36, annoying as it is.

I'm going for Meslier to the end of the season for sure.

Leeds have good fixtures and he will get save points. He's worth the hit IMO

That'd be my first choice if it didn't mean having to choose between Dallas and Bamford in my third Leeds slot.

Wtf was I thinking with Harrison...?

How much is a worry fielding only 9 this week for -4?

    (Forster? Mendy)
    TAA Dallas (Shaw James Holding)
    Salah Lingard Zaha Siggy (Bruno)
    Kane DCL Bamford

Really can't see removing a defender or goal keeper for another -4 to be honest.

    Anything worth another -4 (0.0ITB)?

    A. Mendy/Forster to a nailed GK -4
    B. Shaw/Holding to Dallas -4
    C. Iheanacho to Bamford/Antonio -4
    D. Take no hits and play Vydra, hopefully Forster plays too

      Meslier isn't a bad shout.

Seems like you'll be taking multiple hits. Antonio is a good shout pending the results today

I will take maximum -4, could fill 11 already without hits.
However I have to say all A B C are very tempting
