How the top 10k FPL managers set their teams up for Blank Gameweek 36

Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) returns to the summit of influence among the top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers for Blank Gameweek 36.

Two goals and one assist in his last three matches and a Sunday afternoon trip to West Bromwich Albion were enough to help him become this weekend’s most popular captain at that level.

The armband debate proved to be rather one-sided in the end as 77.3% of the top 10k handed it to Salah for Blank Gameweek 36.

As you can see from the chart above, that made for a huge majority against the second-placed Harry Kane (£11.8m); 63.4 percentage points.

Outside of those two premium assets, there was mostly pocket-change handed out to the other captain options.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin‘s (£7.6m) Sunday-evening meeting with basement boys Sheffield United was enough for 2.8% of the top 10k to take a calculated risk with their captain’s armband.

Meanwhile, Salah and Kane’s respective colleagues Son Heung-min (1.5%) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (0.8%) completed the top five armbandees.

Salah is some way clear in the effective ownership department as well, offering a figure of 170.7% in the top 10k.

Kane sits in second place with 96.5% effective ownership while Alexander-Arnold (76.9%), Jesse Lingard (74.2%) and Son (67.2%) complete the top five.

Chip season is very much in its closing stages as we approach the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

The Free Hit was the most deployed for Blank Gameweek 36 but attracted just 2.4% interest among the top 10k.

Just under 2.0% of them went for a Wildcard while 0.1% used the Triple Captain and just 200 managers at this level Bench Boosted.

With two Gameweeks left of the season, 94.9% of the top 10k have exhausted their chip supply.

Salah is now the most-owned asset in the top 10k, sat in 93.4% squads at that level after an increase of roughly 10 percentage points between the two most-recent deadlines.

Bruno Fernandes‘ (£11.5m) backing has dropped off considerably. His 88.8% top-10k ownership for Triple Gameweek 35 was perhaps influenced by Free Hit chips and he comes into the latest round owned by just 56.6% in the upper echelons.

Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.3m) has also seen his ownership drop off a cliff. He was the top 10k’s favourite player for Triple Gameweek 35 (95.1%) but is no longer among the top three most popular forwards.

Calvert-Lewin (51.2%) and Patrick Bamford (39.3%) have replaced the Leicester man and Ollie Watkins (£6.5m) in that regard.

Pep proving once again he hates FPL players.

Incredible though the quality on city’s bench.

Their second string would probably challenge for a top four place.

      It’s kind of depressing sometimes.

Made my free hit a lot of 'fun'. Ederson - nailed. Foden and Mahrez - guaranteed they said. Gah. Now I'm relying on Forster, Mitchell and Davis to step up.

Yep, a lot of talk of bringing Maghreb “nailed” and Foden in yesterday.

I listened and put Foden in for -4, not too fussed as had a great week last week on FH but still, should have listened to myself and ignored City players.

You got three City players in with that bench? Maybe a lesson to be learned here

Don't beat yourself up about it. I got Mahrez and Foden for a hit and captained Mahrez and will end up with 9 or 10 players as it stands. I don't regret it. It is a case of right decision wrong outcome. If the City A team had played, they'd have probably scored 5 or 6 and you'd be laughing with 30 or more points (if you captained one of Mahrez or Foden. )

Without the leaked lineup before deadline (which is quite rare now), there would have been a lot of teams with one of the main City boys. People here just don't want to admit it and sit in hindsight making fun of those who made the moves.

I don't agree that it was the right decision.

It wasn't entirely logical to choose rotation heavy city players, it was a gamble that didn't come off.

Exactly - that’s the textbook example of WRONG decision wrong outcome in my book

Had Mahrez hauled I still would have said it was a terrible decision to get him (ok maybe terrible is a bit harsh - but the world is a harsh place - definitely “bad” if not “terrible”)

Why gamble trying to predict Pep? It’s silly, it’s wreckless and it’s risky - not “the right decision” lol

I’m glad FPL has a deadline and you can’t make changes within the GW as it just makes everything simpler. With that said, those games like Sky, the Sun etc where you can make moves once line ups are known do remove some of the luck involved.

I’ve never understood why changes can’t be made once line, ups are known. This ensures luck plays a bigger part as every decision is just an educated gues.

    Current WC draft:

    Meslier, 4m
TAA, Robertson, Shaw, Dallas, Holding Son, Bale, Salah, Greenwood, Raphina
    Wood, Antonio, Kane

Intention to do Kane -> Aguero GW38.

Any areas to improve? Am chasing so don't need to play safe. 0 ITB.

Brought him in on FH last week, looks sharp, still world class and in another league to a lot of PLmstrikers.

Will be bringing him in, probably for Bamford next week.

Also signed a new deal. He's fullly invested now, as opposed to wavering a bit mid-season (in his own words, he had long-standing plans to head back to home and family).

Thanks, am considering also. I was trying to go for lower ownership players so:

        Bale (4.9%)
        Antonio (7.6%)
        Over:

        Lingard (30%)
        Bamford (41.7%)

        Fyi just sold Lingard.

Bamford (as a partial Leeds fan) needs a break. Scored last week which is great! But more luck than skill. Soon as Leeds invest in a decent striker they’ll be pushing top half of table.

Looks a very decent player to me. At a team who hardly let attacking players free.

Not sure personally - my concern is there was a very visible uptick in “Eze is a fantastic player who is destined for big things” on here coincidentally right after the Sheffield United game

But Sheffield United have contributed a fair old proportion of his productivity this year, and are just not a normal team

He could end up doing great of course

Each to their own, I've no vested interest in him but I think he looks well tidy.

No doubt he looks strong direct pacy & skilful

But it doesn’t really set him apart imo - pacy trickersters are ten a penny across the leagues - & Eze (at the minute) relies on a couple of games vs Sheffield United to stand out from the crowd

Think he also benefits a small bit (not necessarily with you - but with the media - who in turn emphasise his contributions perhaps more, which in turn gets into peoples heads when watching games) from his passport and from recently having played Sheffield United twice

Would be nice to see him kick on & develop though for sure

Saying that, I've not watched a ton of Palace. There's often a better option than watching them!

Was really disappointed last night that Mahrez and Foden didn't play. FH off to a bad start.

This morning though I find myself 500+ places higher. Simplay not taking hits improved my OR by 500 places in the top 10k.

Still on zero this GW. Soucek and Coufal auto subs. I guess they could turn out to be handy differentials.

This. Those who act that this logic is not sound probably don't follow much football outside EPL. Teams all over Europe have sealed their league early while having a UCL final to play before and they play their best players to stay match fit. Look at Bayern last year. And they do have a deep squad to rotate if they wanted.

You're using your own thoughts on how Pep should pick his team to try to rationalise your picks, yet a large number of people look at City and see a lottery (hence pep roulette), so realistically there's a spot in the middle of both views, which is it was a gamble that could have worked but didn't, but there should be no suprise it didn't

            • 14 Years

Hang on - are you saying you picked Mahrez because Bayern would pick him in he same situation?

            I don’t get this...

And “teams all over Europe”... are you perhaps exaggerating here? How many “teams all over Europe” are playing in the champions league final each year? How many of hose have wrapped up the league in advance? How many rotated in dead rubber league games?

Have you really looked into this or is it just hunches & guesswork? (Which coincidentally is all anyone has when trying to figure out Peps rotation of attackers in particular)

            People never learn

I picked them on FH because they offered a lot of upside with their low ownership and explosive potential.
Also I want to try and make up a 30 point gap in my mini league.
So it made sense to me.
I guess we have make our own rationale.

Why do you assume they wouldn't? They hadn't had a game since the PSG game 10 days ago. Now IF they start against Brighton it would be their first game in 2 weeks. Does that make sense to you?

If it makes sense to have City players before then it makes sense now for a good fixture.
People understand the risks. But are still willing.

Has he really been that unpredictable recently though? I’d say it’s been relatively predictable re his favoured first XI who have played the CL matches (Mahrez, Foden included). Now since they haven’t played in 10 days, it made perfect sense they’d start this week to maintain rhythm and sharpness, rest them next game, then play

Yes he has always been unpredictable - particularly with his wide attackers - less so with central midfielders and centrebacks, but still unpredictable there too

When it comes to predicting his attacking midfielders it’s an absolutes fool’s mission in the overwhelming majority of games

It never changes though, certain people will always think they can guess Peps thoughts up until he point where they realise they can’t

He’s very sneakily gone & blanked in 11 of the last 17 gameweeks

60 points in the first 5 games plus 19 points in GW19 bs Palace were Kane’s big scoring weeks

This is one of your hobby horses, is it not, Kane being some kind of false prophet?

21 goals in 32 games this term.

He was a very productive prophet in GW2-5

Since then - just not as much

Could be due an explosion in the last few games to pad out his second half of the season - which has been pretty staccato by his own lofty standards

Has the goalscoring side of his game has been dialled down a bit with the deeper role?

Think he’s on 17 goals from play + 4 pens this season for example

His goalscoring seemed to peak a few year back with the 2x 29 goal seasons, hopefully he can get back e heights again & maybe get a 30 goal season for the scrap book

Those ankle injuries are a serious worry though - he needs a goal or two vs Wolves to break the duck since returning from the latest ankle knack

I think he's always liked to drop deep and link play, he's not your old-fashioned no.9 (nobody is now - in fact, were they truly ever?).

I don't see any reason the goals drop off, I don't see any big change in his game - but that's my eye only.

Think he's going to break a load or records, personally - though not the Spurs one, as if general memory serves I think Jimmy Greaves scored an absolute load. Now there was a scorer, and one you hardly hear heralded for some reason

I thought Poch started playing him a wee bit deeper around 18/19, which coincided with the injuries starting to become a bit more frequent, and he just didn’t look as intimidating as the 16/17 & 17/18 Harry Kane... but maybe that’s just memory playing tricks

The thing that grinds my gears with Kane is (again) the media, particularly commentators, fawning over every contribution no matter how trivial, including scoring bagfuls of goals against incredibly bad international teams (panama, Lithuania, San Marino, Malta, Tunisia, Montenegro etc) and also ignoring his (quite frankly ridiculous at this stage) dirty streak

I think it skews general perception of him among a lot of folks (again not you personally) & unbalances the general sentiment around him tbh

Maybe so, I can't say I've noticed it - not significantly enough to remember, anyway.

What I do quite vividly remember (rare for me) was when he first broke into the Spurs team. He looked more like a no.10/playmaker on first impressions, and I remember asking a Spurs mate what he was all about. He didn't think he was an out-and-out scorer at the time.

Then he started scoring goals, and hasn't really stopped. Again, I've got no agenda (other than being adamant United should have signed him five years ago, and now it's too late), but I still see 25+ goals every year from him – and could be elevated to that 30+ and even more crazy status at certain teams (PSG always seems to fit various criteria).

                    Anyway, we shall see.

(Ankles notwithstanding , I should say)

Yeah the summer will be very interesting - seeing him at Man Utd Chelsea or man city would be box office tbf - the Sky could be the limit for whoever signs him

No chance City sign him. The guy is a good finisher but is too slow for counter attacks. He lacks dribbling skills too. In any case Spurs play around him. He won't get that at a top club. He won't be the main man if he goes to any team that plays for top 2 in PL. He will be a bit part player.

You could find the same guy (Tinkermania) relentlessly criticising Bruno Fernandes (up until about 2 months into his season)

Because he “hadn’t scored against a big 6 team from play in the first half” or something ridiculously arbitrary like that - one of the most bizarre stances I e ever seen anyone take against a player - and chose to take it against someone so ridiculously talented too... the mind boggles

Over time you figure out that some particular opinions on here are just informed by absolute hot garbage 🙂

Very tight in ML 3rd currently with only 6 pts from the top, teams are though alike, with those in (*) are my differential from them. Any suggestions on stronger differentials for the last 2 GWs? 0.7ITB 1 FT plan to save FT.

Also in the triple Man City FH fail club. Mahrez, Foden, Stones. At least they didn’t come on as subs and I have a decent bench (although I should have put more thought into sub 2 and 3).

Thought I had fixed my team for this week as I remembered transferring out Wilson, yet I take a look last night and see I captained JWP and not Salah (something I also was sure I remembered doing). I can't even understand how I at any point had captaincy on him since I used it on Greenwood last week. Oh well, guess I knew there had to be a downturn after a good FH last week!

      Good TV.
It hasn't really been a benefit this season though imo.
Too many of the old guard big hitters have not been consistent and there seems to have been more mid and low range successes this year. I don't think I've once had a problem with affording the team I want this year.

What price next season for these characters?

    Tim Krul (4.5),
    TAA (7.0),_____, _____,
    Bruno (12.0), Grealish (8.0), Raphinia (7.0), _____
    Kane (12.0), Iheanacho (7.5), Antonio (7.5)
    (4.5, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5)

Bones of a decent squad right there for 83.5

Leaves 16.5 for the other 3x slots - whichever way you want to spread the funds

    1. Holmes
      • 10 Years

Wondering if he fa to that Nacho has only started 13 games will save him from a bigger price increase - he should be more expensive but we might get value on account of his minutes coming too late hopefully... might be wishful thinking though

Even at 8.0 he’d still be interesting though possibly, even when Barnes comes back I’d say he’s Leciesters new long term #9 taking over from JV

For me, with all foxes fit, there is one too many players to choose from. At 8 mil is it safe for Naco next season or does the manager go back to a front 1? Remember, Nacho has been playing but results overall better without him. Your views?

          1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
            • 14 Years
            2 years, 10 months ago

Could he fit Barnes, Maddison, Vardy, Nacho in? Easy enough to leave Perez out...

Vardy is almost a left winger now these days anyway, and Nacho kind of cuts in from the right onto his left

But longer term - old man Vardy is 35 next season so Nachos minutes are surely only going one direction

He’s been sooo good too - sudden,y seems to have found all that wonder kid potential that City were hoping to unlock back in the day

                June 23 apparently - 2 more years!

That’s phenomenal from Vardy in fairness, he’ll be 37

And to give him his dues - he’s only a quite frankly insane 27 attacking returns again this year, despite being 34 & going through a drought the last few months

He’s not going to go from 30-ish returns straight down to zero overnight either - could easily get another 20-25 (maybe more) next year again

In my opinion, I've not seen hardly a drop-off. I never seem to have him in my team but he's in other rivals', and he always looks like he could score. Could have had loads in his recent barren run.
Plus, he makes so many runs and still looks absolutely rapid, and he's not shy to set chances up with a cross.
Very least one more top year, for me. And I don't even warn to the guy.

Tell me about it, got him inGW28 & have had to watch in horror as he’s scored 1 of his 8 big chances in that timeframe (1!!)

Including captaining him the last 3 gameweeks, where he gets 1 assist in 4 games vs Palace, Southampton, Newcastle and Man Utd reserves...

Massive OR swing there, and another reason I’ll be glad to see the back of this season.,

Vardy is still one of my favourite players to watch and to own thouh, he is just class when he’s on it

Many a time I've watched him boost someone else's gameweek, at my expense. But rarely pick him, for some reason.
Must be agony to watch him miss chances. But I've suffered him scoring two goals from two breakaway chances or whatever enough times!
I've personally been pretty lucky with his recent run, burned me many times before though

Salah might only be 11.5 too considering he’ll probably have strung together two very poor (by his standards) seasons
