How the top 10k FPL managers set their teams up for Blank Gameweek 36

Mohamed Salah (£12.7m) returns to the summit of influence among the top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers for Blank Gameweek 36.

Two goals and one assist in his last three matches and a Sunday afternoon trip to West Bromwich Albion were enough to help him become this weekend’s most popular captain at that level.

The armband debate proved to be rather one-sided in the end as 77.3% of the top 10k handed it to Salah for Blank Gameweek 36.

As you can see from the chart above, that made for a huge majority against the second-placed Harry Kane (£11.8m); 63.4 percentage points.

Outside of those two premium assets, there was mostly pocket-change handed out to the other captain options.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin‘s (£7.6m) Sunday-evening meeting with basement boys Sheffield United was enough for 2.8% of the top 10k to take a calculated risk with their captain’s armband.

Meanwhile, Salah and Kane’s respective colleagues Son Heung-min (1.5%) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (0.8%) completed the top five armbandees.

Salah is some way clear in the effective ownership department as well, offering a figure of 170.7% in the top 10k.

Kane sits in second place with 96.5% effective ownership while Alexander-Arnold (76.9%), Jesse Lingard (74.2%) and Son (67.2%) complete the top five.

Chip season is very much in its closing stages as we approach the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

The Free Hit was the most deployed for Blank Gameweek 36 but attracted just 2.4% interest among the top 10k.

Just under 2.0% of them went for a Wildcard while 0.1% used the Triple Captain and just 200 managers at this level Bench Boosted.

With two Gameweeks left of the season, 94.9% of the top 10k have exhausted their chip supply.

Salah is now the most-owned asset in the top 10k, sat in 93.4% squads at that level after an increase of roughly 10 percentage points between the two most-recent deadlines.

Bruno Fernandes‘ (£11.5m) backing has dropped off considerably. His 88.8% top-10k ownership for Triple Gameweek 35 was perhaps influenced by Free Hit chips and he comes into the latest round owned by just 56.6% in the upper echelons.

Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.3m) has also seen his ownership drop off a cliff. He was the top 10k’s favourite player for Triple Gameweek 35 (95.1%) but is no longer among the top three most popular forwards.

Calvert-Lewin (51.2%) and Patrick Bamford (39.3%) have replaced the Leicester man and Ollie Watkins (£6.5m) in that regard.

I don’t understand why so much bitterness towards pep here. We all know he rotates and any city player is a gamble. The best time for city assets is normally at start is season not when he had finals , same for BB.

I have mahrez but ensured playing bench

If you want nailed players. Don’t pick city .

I’m not bitter. I knew the risks of picking a City player (Foden in my case). Doesn’t stop me hating on Pep for a few hours though.

You don’t see it as bad when Klopp rotates his front 3 .

I think any players that was dropped yesterday will play next week ??

I think it’s a combination of bitterness towards the baldy git with anger at oneself for potentially blowing a FH that would have majorly contributed to overhauling minileague rivals. At least that’s what it is in my case (65-35 to be fair :-D)

The guy is just prioritizing. Why risk his players for a useless PL game.

All the people getting angry at him should rather get angry at themselves for not thinking right.

Another example of why Munday's articles are not up to the required standard.

" ...it is Willock who will perhaps command the biggest interest ahead of Gameweeks 37 and 38. In finding the net on Friday night, he is now joint-top among all midfielders for goals scored across their last six matches, his total of five level with Torres, Matheus Pereira (£5.4m) and Mason Greenwood (£7.2m)."

His goal conversion during that time was 56%. He is scoring with every other shot, which is unsustainable. Yet another oversight.

Should the deputy editor and the editor switch roles given the superior quality of Neale's articles?

David is a really nice chap, but should that mean a free pass for low quality content that we have to pay for? Maybe. I don't know TBH.

The best articles are from Neale, David W, Jan when it comes to the regular authors.

Without them, I'd cancel my membership, if I could find another source for opta stats.

I find it hard to read all the articles when I'm busy, so being able to skip a few from the not so authors is not too much of an issue.

Better than the Jan Sienowieciz article yesterday afternoon - I still can’t get over it:

      https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2021/05/14/who-is-the-best-fpl-captain-for-blank-gameweek-36/

      - However, it is now expected that Guardiola will opt for a full-strength XI against Newcastle United in Gameweek 36 in the bid to maintain match fitness of his main players, which bodes well for those willing to get in Manchester City assets.

      - In this scenario, Mahrez and Phil Foden (£6.0m) emerge as the two most explosive and exciting Manchester City attacking assets, in my opinion. Both players have established themselves in City’s starting lineup in the second part of the current campaign and neither of them looks to lose their spot anytime soon.

      - The severe lack of Premier League minutes for both players in recent Gameweeks should not discourage potential buyers and owners, as it just seemed to be a case of Guardiola setting his priorities towards cup success. With neither Foden nor Mahrez registering significant game-time in the league, their European form is the best indicator of points potential in Gameweek 36.

      - With the relegation no longer threatening Newcastle and Man City playing their first game since officially achieving the 2020/21 Premier League title, we should expect an open and high-scoring contest. Therefore, both Mahrez and Foden are top captaincy options, with the Algerian having a slight edge as he could be on penalty duties, considering De Bruyne’s absence and recent missed spot-kicks…

      - I’m so confident in this analysis that I’m going to make 4 transfers this week and none of them will be Man City players, let alone captaincy options (he may or may not have typed this bit)

          It’s why it’s such a disaster

At least if he’d backed his own opinion we could say - he was foolish, but he was honest

Or even if he had just made no FT’s we could say “he was just foolish and maybe he would have backed city had he had the chance”

But to make 4 free transfers, and not one city player?

Looks very suspect after that glowingly confident writeup about their prospects

Verging on sabotage some might say

He very bullishly predicted city team lineups (thin ice at the best of times), and then very bullishly backed two city attackers as “top captaincy picks”

He then proceeded to make not one, not two, not three, but FOUR transfers... and guess how many of those transfers were the city players he was raving about in the article?

As I was reading he article I was thinking to cannot be serious here at predicting Pep of all people

If he’d backed his own advice it wouldn’t be as bad (it would just be the misleading info factor)

But he knew rightly himself that he wouldn’t take those risks with his own team, yet was fine with others taking the risks for him

I assume he got wind of the city line up leaks ... which would have happened after the article was published and caused a lot of uncertainty for him.

Plus you have to keep the article and the management of your own team as two separate entities. Otherwise it just doesn't work.

You’d assume wrongly - he made 3 transfers on the 10th May (pre-article)

When the article is about FPL, I don’t think you can keep it a separate entity from his team - did he believe what he was writing, enough to even endorse it for his own team?

You should rewatch the episodes when he has been on the FPL wire.

He's a good guy and he gives honest advice. There's no sinister motive and like I said before the captain sensible articles are immeasurably better than last season.

Plus he has the minerals to give a proper conclusion in captain sensible. It takes brass balls not to sit on the fence and rank the captain picks.

I didn’t have his team link - and whilst reading the article was thinking “what is this guy doing backing city so heavily, this is crazy risky, and hey it might work but is probably very stupid,” fully assuming he was at least going to have one of Mahrez or Foden on board, if not captaining them

In the case, what you say isn’t without merit. But I wouldn’t spend too much time getting wound up about it. Plenty of so called “pro-pundits” predicted the same on various podcasts and ended up ignoring City assets (I guess because most didn’t have a FH). They just didn’t write an article about it.

Time to dust ourselves down and focus on the remaining 2 gameweeks.

Correct. His transfers were made for the next 3 gameweeks. Not solely for gw36.

He made 3 transfers on the 10th May (pre-article) and 1 transfer on 14th May (post article) - and this isn’t a normal “changed my mind” situation

          Disgraceful imo

There needs to be some sort of control on that type of thing

Or at least say in the article (as I did above)

THat he won’t be having any Man City in his own team, despite taking a 12 point hit and making 4 transfers

That’s how highly he thought of city for his own team

A minus TWELVE for zero Man City (not even a single Man City player, let alone any of their alleged “top captaincy picks”)

While simultaneously endorsing that article 😆

Yeah that’s bizarre. Although I guess he could’ve got wind of the rumours just before the deadline and changed plans.

FWIW I’m not mad at Pep for being Pep, I decided on a FH to subvert my normal strategy and take a series of calculated risks. Triple city was one of them. Hasn’t worked, although might have been worse if a couple got a 10 min cameos.

Of course another risk I took was Cresswell on my subs bench, thinking I couldn’t possibly need all three...

That is why the Pro Pundit articles (in the main) are a waste of time. They don't want to give away their strategies.

The only decent pro-pundit articles are those by Simon March and Tom Freeman's differentials. Occasionally, Seb Wassell has a decent one.

The best article if you want to improve at FPL is Greyhead's 'Learning from the Great and the Good'. That gives you the moves from top performing players and if you spend a bit of time understanding why they made those moves you can apply similar thinking to your own team.

Personally I prefer to play my own game & back my own judgement - I’ve found over the years it’s less painful than taking someone else’s guess over my own, and overall I do ok from it - but each to their own

The problem here is this is just such a blatant example of dysfunctionality though

It’s hard to reconcile it with the industry leading pro pundits and advantages that FFS membership allegedly gives (all the bells and whistles that attract new players/customers)

It would be nice to even just hear from Jan what happened - why he backed Man City so heavily I print but didn’t put his money where his mouth was when push came to shove

I don’t know who Jan is and did not read the whole article but this criticism looked a bit harsh and unjustified to me. His comments seem to be relevant for City@GW36 but his transfers/hits are for next 3GWs. Even he was %100 percent sure City would play with the strongest squad yesterday, it was pretty obvious they would be benched for at least one of the remaining two so not worth a hit imo. If he made a FH and not include any City players then that would be wrong. His only mistake though is making strong predictions on Pep’s team selections but it is also your mistake to believe in anyone predicting a Pep team after wrapping the title..

“ The severe lack of Premier League minutes for both players in recent Gameweeks should not discourage potential buyers and owners, as it just seemed to be a case of Guardiola setting his priorities towards cup success. ”

Jan was a potential buyer (he made 4 transfers) and “the severe lack of minutes” obviously discouraged him?

          Why shouldn’t it discourage others?

“but it is also your mistake to believe in anyone predicting a Pep team after wrapping the title..”

Do you mean “you” as in “anyone who (paid for) and took his advice”?

(Because I personally, like Jan, didn’t go near city with a barge pole knowing the risks)

If so - what is the point of the pro pundit and members only articles - do they need to add a disclaimer at the start that says “by the way if you believe anything that is obviously bolllocks in this article that you’ve paid for, it’s your mistake so fck you?”

Some people genuinely seem to either disagree on principle or assume that because a strong opinion has been offered that it’s just bluster that hasn’t been well though through & therefore is invalid

See for example the amount of people who came steaming in with “he’s allowed to change his mind”, “maybe he made he transfers when he got wind of rumours”, then when that has been disproven gradually evolving to “everyone does it anyway”, “what’s the big deal” etc etc - pure complacent laziness, not even bothering to inform themselves of the situation or it’s implications before commenting

Unfortunately this type of posting has become more & more common on the message boards over the last while & has really gone to the dogs

A lot of worshipping here. Unjustified, though really similar to those who follow "influencers".
Just blindly parroting things and defending them regardless.

I think they must see the thread of comments, look at the words, decide “I’m not reading that, but I kind of think I understand though”, and based on that I’m just going to have a pop instead” 😆

The comment structure on here really doesn’t help as that type of drivel doesn’t get met with the ridicule it deserves, or any type of negative feedback, to prevent them doing it again in future unfortunately

If anything it almost gets positively reinforced as people see the short, snappy, passive aggressive (or sometimes just aggressive) reply and think oh this person has really put that person back in their box etc

A player in great form will be picked by a lot of players, what's the issue?

Lingard, Iheanacho, Gündogan were all in ridiculous form basically scoring with every shot, people went in for them as they were in their purple patch and it ended up with easy points.

Are you trying to find an issue when there isn't really one to find?

Yes you’re right but at the same time, as Maximus posted above, when you write articles for other people, and those people see you as a top top player, then you have to back your talk to have credibility. No good just saying player a and player b are great shouts but I’m not going to go near any of them and instead I’ll just go with the herd. Bluffing listeners is not cool.

On top of that, many content creators make money from FPL. So in a way, the people who pay for memberships, patreons, the lot, have a right to ask questions at times.

There is trolling, and then there is this. This is not trolling.

Someone calls themselves an expert and gives advice for money. So they have to do better.
Does not mean that all has to be spot on, that would be too much expectation.
But they (Jan in this case) have to be a bit more mindful in what they are doing.

Just word it better, say they won't personally do the transfer. (or at the time of writing) even say they made 3 transfers already, might take another hit for -12 total, but that they won't have any ManCity players themselves in the teams.

i was replying to and referring to Vigin as trolling by getting personal with Munday, he has been doing it for years and is quite petty and sad really

I don’t really have a view on the Jan advice, we all change our mind on a daily basis but it was quite strange that he didn’t do what he said and did the exact opposite. Certainly not trolling though

Stones and Foden in the scout picks was a joke, right?

Hopefully people didn't buy them because they saw them in there.

I pick my team. Then check the scout picks. If I have six or more players that are common, I am worried!

I've got 9, went Martinez & Mahrez, over Sanchez & Vertergaard with the extra MITB.

Why pick players who are pretty much 50/50 to play though? Doesn't make any sense.

I was already planning to get them on FH, but if they weren't there I might have had second thoughts about going treble City.

Man City, playing a leaky team, CL looming, title secured, minutes needed for squad players, history of rotation etc etc.

People chasing went for City and its understandable. But if you didnt know the risks you were a bit naive.

I had Foden and Ederson in my WC. Luckily I saw the rumours and made two last minute transfers getting in Carson and Gundogan. I would have been extremely hacked off taking hits to get those guys in.

      Help needed please !

Is there anywhere to view the entire ranking table (i.e. want to look at the teams/managers around my ranking) - can only view the top ranked teams/manager in FPL - unless I want to press the 'next page' button around 1,000 times !!!!

      Thanks

Just realised I could have got Bamford & Lingard instead of DCL & Raphinha.

D’Oh that’s what I get for rushed last minute transfers

          In hindsight I prefer B & L I think.
But yes I think at the time I was blinded by the Sheff fixture for Everton
