Fulham defence offers appeal for Man United and Newcastle attackers

Southampton 3-1 Fulham

  • Goals: Che Adams (£5.7m), Nathan Tella (£4.3m), Theo Walcott (£5.8m) | Fabio Carvalho (£4.5m)
  • Assists: James Ward-Prowse (£5.9m), Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.7m), Tella | Bobby De Cordova-Reid (£5.3m)
  • Bonus points: Adams x3, Tella x2, Ward-Prowse x1

FUL OF IT

Owners of Manchester United assets, and even those targetting Newcastle attackers, will take encouragement from Fulham’s latest defeat.

In conceding three goals at Southampton, the Cottagers highlighted themselves as late-season “whipping boys” after spending much of the winter months and early 2021 as a difficult-to-beat side.

Between Gameweeks 23 and 32, Scott Parker’s men conceded a total of 12 goals in as many matches (one per game).

During that period they put up five clean sheets, the second-most in the league, behind only Chelsea (six).

However, each of their last three outings have seen Fulham give up at least two goals, conceding seven goals in the process (2.3 per game).

OH DANNY BOY

Danny Ings‘ (£8.4m) two-goal return to the team against Crystal Palace proved to be something of a false dawn in the context of Blank Gameweek 36.

Against Fulham, he did make his second successive Premier League start since recovering from another muscle injury but could not make it to the hour.

Ralph Hasenhüttl replaced Ings with Nathan Tella (£4.3m) in the 58th minute in a substitution he explained was under orders from the club physio, something any interested Fantasy managers should probably be wary of.

“I only did what my head of physio asked me to do. He said 60 minutes, maximum. And I am a good follower, a good listening.” – Ralph Hasenhüttl

While Ings remains Saints’ top goalscorer across his last six matches (four), Che Adams (£5.7m) has shown decent consistency across the last two.

His two goals and one assist, as well as a total of five bonus, made for 20 points during that period, working out at 10 per match.

Meanwhile, Tella finally delivered on his recent promise to score his first Premier League goal 98 seconds after replacing Ings.

Classified as a midfielder in FPL, Tella is seen as nothing other than a striker by his manager.

“It’s time he scored his first goal. the way he works he deserves it. I am very happy for his assist and he deserves it. [Tella] is now on the scorers’ list in the Premier League. It will always be there. This is great for a striker. The smile on the face, it’s always there. He is a very big talent and he is a signal to the other players that there is a chance to go through.” – Ralph Hasenhüttl

Meanwhile, there were some rare changes to the defence for Hasenhüttl’s men in light of Jan Bednarek‘s (£4.7m) enforced absence.

After a string of appearances covering the injured Ryan Bertrand (£5.0m) at left-back since Gameweek 34, Jack Stephens (£4.6m) tucked into a centre-back role alongside Jannik Vestergaard (£4.7m) with Mohammed Salisu (£4.3m) operating at full-back.

Southampton XI: A McCarthy; Salisu, J Stephens, Vestergaard, Walker-Peters; Minamino (Walcott 76′), Armstrong (I Diallo 78′), Ward-Prowse, Redmond; Ings (Tella 58′), Adams.

Fulham XI: Areola; Adarabioyo, Andersen, Tete; De Cordova-Reid, Aina (J Bryan 62′), Reed, Cavaleiro; Anguissa (Lookman 63′), Onomah (Maja 76′); Carvalho.

Chances of a Kane and Salah blank today?

Even just 1 goal wouldn’t be too bad.

Maybe even a few weeks before then! The 2018/19 FPL doors swung open in early July when the World Cup was still on and they seem intent on launching earlier every year.

really is incredible how so many of the narratives we hold to be true over a season can fall by the way side so quickly. 'chelsea are having a great season under Tuchel' is one of them but just think what could conceivably happen to them in the next ten days? 'Arsenal are underperforming under arteta' is another yet in their last 25 league games he has collected the exact same amount of points as chelsea. Granted chelsea have made it to two cup finals and thats an achievement in itself but they have already lost one and are favourites to lose another. And Liverpool's 'disastrous season' could see them finish fourth ahead of chelsea or Leicester. United-who are deemed to be 'progressing' under OGS could lose a europa league final and finish second which is far less than jose's 'failure' at united.the speed at which it can all change its one of the reasons this league is so good.

Think Arteta’s criticism is based on a combination of their league position, style of play, and the fact that his first 50 games in charge yielded less than both Emery & Wenger who he was brought in to improve upon (despite having 5x players who cost nearly 300m between them in Auba, Laca, Partey, Pepe, Xhaka)

Raised a bit of an eye at the pockets of “Tuchel is a God” opinion that seemed to be developing as they progressed further in the champions league & FA Cup though - how many new manager bounces have we seen over the years?

Still think he’ll be another Chelsea managerial cast off - possibly gone in the next 12 months, probably in the next 24 months and almost certainly in the next 36 months. A few more West Brom style results & a bit of dressing room ego driven unrest will see to that.

Also think it’s fair to call Liverpool’s seasons one of he most disastrous title defences in history - they were effectively a one man team - lose VVD & the house of cards came tumbling down - thats a worry for Klopp going forwards

Jose’s failure at Utd was catastrophically losing the dressing room and the constant negativity he drew to the club along with the horrible style of play - Ole not really guilty on hose fronts (yet) tbf

as a pool fan I think virgil's injury was hugely significant (wenger did probably the best piece of analysis on this) but I actually think the biggest factor this season has been Mane's form (and bobby's continuing slump which started well before Covid). Liverpool are creating the chances (salah has created 34) but they arent being put away. A more porous defence could have coped with that had mane and bobby even been moderately good. Im genuinely worried about mane after reading that interview he did. seem he's gotten into his own head and the confidence has been drained away.

Mane, Salah, Firmino all 29 at the end of this season. Their best days are probably behind them.

Jota can replace Firmino. Who will eventually replace Mane and Salah?

The defence is actually quite solid. All under 30 with their best days probably still ahead of them. Curtis Jones will need to step up if Wijnaldum goes and there needs to also be some planning around who will replace Milner / Henderson.

For all the talk about the decline of the 'Big 6', they still dominate. Sure Leicester are making a fight of it and West Ham got lucky, but over the long-term, the 'Big 6' have the long-term factors going in their favour (TV money, CL / EL qualification criteria, stadium size, size of fan base etc.).

Arsenal are likely to finish a few points outside the Top 6. A couple more wins this season (whether in the EL SF or the PL) and it would be a different story for them.

Man Utd have done well. As have Liverpool (no VVD, Gomez, Keita, Henderson etc.). Chelsea arguably underperformed and Spurs are probably going to get Top 6 which is where they ought to be.

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years
        2 years, 10 months ago

Personally I could see it being a long long time (3-5 years or longer) before Spurs or Arsenal make the top four again - especially if Kane/Son go

It may not seem like it at this stage either - but Man Utd are a Fernandes injury away from mid table also

And huge question marks still exist over Liverpool imo - was it genuinely VVD's injury, or has 4 years of non-stop klopp gegenpressing burned out the squad & a rebuild is needed...

Also think at Chelsea there's never more than 2 or 3 bad results/dressing room tiffs away from a new manager & another rebuild

City look firmly entrenched as long as Pep status though tbf but things can change quickly there too

And there'll always be at least one or two overachieving non-big-6 clubs in the running for top four every season now - this season it was Leicester & West Ham - next season could be an Everton or a Wolves - the clubs without European distractions will be very competitive in the league

Great to see for the unpredictability factor & entertainment / competitiveness

Tuchel only in charge of last 17 PL matches, the 8 you've added for your spurious stat included 5 defeats for Fat Frank which were enough to get him the chop.

In last 17 PL matches, Tuchel's Chelsea 35pts, Arteta's Arsenal 28pts. Add the respective cup progess of both sides and not difficult to see the difference.

    Please RMT (Fan Team).

    Martinez
    Shaw Digne Dallas Creswell TAA
    Salah Bruno (vc) Bale
    Kane (c) DCL

    bench order: Jota, Lingard, ESR

Any tips? Is the bench and starters and captain good?

If Jota gets benched today you gotta start him. Probably for Dallas or Cresswell.

He would prefer to get his form back instead of protecting ankle

Why is it the narrative that Jota is benched this week?

    To play Mane?

He collided with Martínez towards the end of the Everton game and was struggling. Surprised it wasn’t mentioned in the team news
