Solskjaer and Bielsa on end-of-season rotation after Gameweek 37 matches

Man United 1-1 Fulham

  • Goals: Edinson Cavani (£8.0m) | Joe Bryan (£4.5m)
  • Assists: Bruno Fernandes (£11.4m) | Bobby De Cordova-Reid (£5.3m)
  • Bonus points: Cavani x3, Bryan x2, Alphonse Areola x1 (£4.5m)

Edinson Cavani (£8.0m) was the top-scoring player as Manchester United drew with Fulham on Tuesday evening.

Over the last six matches, his total of four attacking returns, made up of three goals and one assist, is the joint-most of any colleague.

The Uruguayan international is now level with Mason Greenwood (£7.3m) over the same period. And when the former PSG man has featured from the beginning, he has typically delivered though. His last eight starts have produced five goals and one assist.

Of course, whether or not he can be trusted for a Gameweek 38 trip to Wolves remains to be seen.

Over his last six appearances, Cavani can muster only two starts, although two of his last three goals have come from the substitutes’ bench.

Still, next week’s Europa League final will hang over Manchester United’s preparations for Gameweek 38, and given Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tendency to manage Cavani’s minutes, he could be a risky option for the final Premier League match of the season.

Marcus Rashford (£9.6m) was the biggest name to miss out on the starting line-up against Fulham, coming on for a struggling Scott McTominay (£4.9m) in the second half.

“Unfortunately, Scott McTominay had to come off and Fred doesn’t look great while he’s walking now. But we’ve got eight days (until the Europa League final).” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Rashford or Greenwood could take Cavani’s place against Wolves on Sunday. Solskjaer did mention on Monday that Anthony Martial (£8.6m) could feature although he was unable to make it in time for the Fulham match.

In light of McTominay’s enforced substitution, Rashford could find himself back on the left-hand side of the attacking midfield again with Paul Pogba (£7.6m) likely having to drop into midfield to cover either one of McTominay or Fred (£5.3m).

Based on Solskjaer’s line-up for the Triple Gameweek 35 visit of Leicester, Bruno Fernandes (£11.4m) is arguably not safe from last-day-of-the-season rotation either, with Juan Mata (£5.8m) earning a start at number 10 against the Foxes.

Fernandes provided four points for his owners in Gameweek 37 after he was awarded the assist for Cavani’s first-half strike.

“Honestly, I don’t know (if I touched it). In the moment, I think I don’t touch the ball. I didn’t see the replay but the referee was saying I touched the ball and that was the point to make for the onside.” – Bruno Fernandes

Elsewhere, not even Manchester United’s goalkeeper is easy to predict for the Wolves game.

Prior to the Tuesday-evening meeting with Fulham, David de Gea (£5.3m) had only started against Leicester between Gameweeks 27 and 36.

And even as the Spaniard coming into the team for Gameweek 37, Solskjaer explained the competition for who would start the Europa League final was ongoing, suggesting Dean Henderson (£5.2m) could feature against Wolves.

“It’s still up for grabs. It will be decided in these last two league games.” – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United XI (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Shaw, Tuanzebe, Lindelöf, Wan-Bissaka; Fred, McTominay (Rashford 62′); Pogba, B Fernandes, Greenwood (A Diallo 83′); Cavani (van de Beek 87′).

Fulham XI (4-2-2-2): Areola; J Bryan, Ream, Adarabioyo, Lemina; Reed (Andersen 32′), Anguissa; Lookman (Tete 89′), De Cordova-Reid; Cavaleiro, Carvalho (Loftus-Cheek 63′).

Southampton 0-2 Leeds United

  • Goals: Patrick Bamford (£6.5m), Tyler Roberts (£4.6m)
  • Assists: Rodrigo (£5.7m), Bamford
  • Bonus points: Bamford x3, Kika Casilla x2 (£4.1m), Luke Ayling x1 (£4.4m)

Patrick Bamford (£6.5m) allayed any fears of his season petering out as he produced a 12-point haul in Leeds’ 2-0 win over Southampton.

After a peripheral display against Burnley, the mid-priced forward registered a goal and assist in a textbook away-day performance from Marcelo Bielsa’s men, a display that went a long way to dispelling any theories about this side tiring towards the end of a campaign.

“Patrick had a very generous performance with a lot of effort. He has had a season in which he has shone. I’m sure he will be very positive about the campaign that he has had, be what may.” – Marcelo Bielsa

After a first half that consisted mostly of defending, Leeds ventured forth in the second period with Gaetano Berardi (£4.0m) and Pascal Struijk (£4.0m) replacing Kalvin Phillips (£4.9m) and Diego Llorente (£4.4m).

“Berardi is in an excellent state of form. Him coming on was very useful, he didn’t commit errors and he added a lot.” – Marcelo Bielsa

“It was not my influence, it was their profile of the individualities in the second half which changed the game.” – Marcelo Bielsa

Meanwhile, any Bamford owners worried about his place in the team were handed comfort in the form of Mateusz Klich‘s (£5.2m) early leave, which allowed the in-form Rodrigo (£5.7m) to come into the Leeds team without displacing the former Chelsea man, assisting his second-half goal.

The Spain international operated as a number 10 in an attacking-midfield trio including Jack Harrison (£5.5m) and Raphinha (£5.5m), a role he could realistically fulfil against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.

Tyler Roberts (£4.6m) may have his sights set on getting back into the Leeds team in Gameweek 38 after getting his first Premier League goal at Southampton.

“I was happy he scored, because he had played many games and he hadn’t managed to do it. And the team in the second half looked a lot more like the team it is. And just how we unlevelled the game in the second half, Southampton could have done the same in the first half.” – Marcelo Bielsa

Meanwhile, it would appear Illan Meslier‘s (£4.8m) season is over after Kika Casilla (£4.1m) came into the side against Southampton and looks set to feature on Sunday too.

“It’s a decision I have made. I want Casilla to finish the season in goal.” – Marcelo Bielsa

“(The two goalkeepers) are two professionals of a very high level. And, of course, the year was a lot more difficult for Kiko, but he was very generous and a very good teammate. The fact that Kiko played today and will play on Sunday is a decision that I decided to make concrete.” – Marcelo Bielsa

Finally, Che Adams (£5.7m) had to come off at half-time against Leeds and looks to be a doubt for a Gameweek 38 meeting with West Ham, which could mean a third successive start at centre-forward for Nathan Tella (£4.3m).

“(Adams) has a little bit of a groin problem. He gave us the signal that he could not go on. He was also tired. He played Saturday and Tuesday against two strong teams.” – Ralph Hasenhüttl

Southampton XI (4-4-2): McCarthy; Salisu, Vestergaard, J Stephens, Walker-Peters; Djenepo, Armstrong, Ward-Prowse, Walcott (I Diallo 78′); Tella (Redmond 70′), Adams (Ings 46′).

Leeds United XI (3-3-3-1): Casilla; Llorente (Berardi 46′), Cooper, Ayling; Alioski, K Phillips (Struijk 46′), Dallas; Harrison, Rodrigo (Roberts 78′), Raphinha; Bamford.

      Rudiger 2nd on my bench.

Every time I've needed someone off the bench I get injured players from nowhere and when a player hauls on my bench I never get him in.

So Bruno still has the assist then. This is genuinely utterly disgusting and completely undermines the integrity of the game. This is likely to have serious implications for final positions in private mini leagues with cash prizes.

The angle from behind Fernandez conclusively shows no touch and therefore the goal should have been disallowed. It really isnt difficult.

So sick to death of this incompetence from these moron officials. Why is it that these clowns see something different to the rest of the world from the same clear video evidence? Makes me sick!

Other fantasy football sites dont always follow the official decisions when they are clearly the wrong decisions. I played fan team last season and there was a similar scenario in a Man City game I remember involving De Bruyne and Silva.

Cant remember the exact scenario but the original official decisions were changed after the game to fit in with the wrong decision by VAR similar to last night but fan team kept the original goal and assist awards as they were.

disgusting is putting it mildly. Its an utter disgrace. FPL is supposed to be a fair game but it clearly isnt. So many incompetent decisions made this season but this one is by far the worst.

This stuff is so funny. What’s FPL got to do with it? 😆
Oh dude. Must have a pretty sweet life if this utterly disgusts you. I can’t really take you seriously.

I think you need to remember that FPL officially, as per the T&Cs, do not allow paid leagues.

I'm in a paid league so I'm not telling you to stop, or being hypocritical, just reminding that it's on each individuals own head if they decide to gamble money on this GAME, FPL Towers specifically tell people not to put money on the game as it isn't supposed to be taken as seriously as some people take it.

The goal could not have stood unless Bruno touched the ball. The goal was awarded, ergo Bruno must have touched it, ergo he made an assist. That's the reasoning.

The problem is just the tiny scruple that he didn't touch it. Even he says he didn't. The camera says he didn't. Therefore it's very bad reasoning because the basic premise is false.

So, what we have here is the referee makes a mistake, VAR doesn't see it as a clear and obvious error, OPTA and then FPL fall in line and we don't just have an Emperor with no clothes, his whole entourage are going commando as well so as not to embarrass him. And that kind of thing is happening far too much in the world right now in areas much more important than FPL.

That's what's disgusting, or disturbing, or demoralising or whatever you want to call it. That we have created a system where it is so often more convenient and easy to fall in behind a mistruth or even a brazen falsehood than to be straightforward with facts and truth.

So FPL is just a tiny example of something far more worrisome. People are dying because of stuff like this.

I'm not sure that is what actually happened though.

There is an alternative reasoning that OPTA couldn't prove that Bruno didn't get a millimetre level touch to the ball, so slight that it didn't alter the travel, and so favoured the attacker and said "we can't prove it yes or not, we'll go yes".

I also feel like most that he didn't touch the ball, but not every decision has sinister undertones. Sometimes people just make decisions that other people don't like.

Sort of associated to this, people have been calling for (normal shoulder to shoulder) offside decisions to favour the attacker for years. This is just it in practice but on a more unusual offside call.

None of us can be sure that he didn't touch the ball. For me the video is actually inconclusive.

Opta don't base decisions on player post-match comments though do they? They look at the video replay, which is inconclusive.

I'd watch out before saying it can't be proved it didn't happen and it definitely didn't happen.

It all appears that he didn't touch it, but can the ball have skimmed his boot just enough, possibly less than millimetres and still continue with the same trajectory?

If it is theoretically possible for that to happen then OPTA have come to the decision "I can't prove it, so we will side with the attacker".

Again, realistically I don't think it has been touched but surely you can understand the concept of what OPTA appear to be thinking?

have you compared your transfers in to anyone else you follow that was around the same position but did well?

That sort of drop off suggests you haven't gone with the 'template' choices that were template for a very good reason

            1. Kellz86
              • 6 Years

Indeed, took very poor choices when things turned instead of trying to steady the ship.

Big moves missed: not believing Gundo could sustain his goal scoring run, not getting in on Lingard, going Vardy over Nacho, poor decision using WC and BB when CoV was disrupting matches. Generally picking between two captains and consistently managing to get the one that scores less.

It’s just been a mess that I made worse by going “full tilt” chasing in my mini league when I lost top spot.

Lessons for next season, this will go down as my worst

As much as people don't like to hear it or play that way, template boringness gets you consistent finishes in this game.

The amount of luck you need for lots of differentials all to come off is just too high to be a regularly formula for playing.

Playing in form are in form and should generally be jumped on until they go out of form.
Template players are template for a reason because they regularly will get you points
Going without template players will deny you of regular secure points and put you at a EO disadvantage due to differentials not getting you the points you need to keep up.
Captain picks should just be left on heavy hitters 90% of the time. Unless someone who isn't a heavy hitter is in great great form.

If you deviate from the above you might do well but this is a game of calculated chance, and you want to put the odds in your favour as much as possible.

Oh I also forgot one of the biggest parts. The game still has about a 30+% luck factor. So the wrong heavy hitter captain, or your City defender getting an own goal vs the other City defender scoring a goal is just the way it is some days.

Sometimes your luck is just not in and you have to accept it and move on, recognising that making the same initial decision again wouldn't be the wrong thing to do if you had the chance.

All in my opinion and I'm mainly just ranting instead of directing this directly at you 😛

Exactly. I had both Stones and Dias at the time, but I didn't get Stones is due to his famous goalscoring ability, it was just because of their strong cleansheet chances. I also got extremely lucky he started to randomly score goals all of a sudden.

Yup normally follow a more conservative approach as you stated:

                  1st season: 60,907th
                  2nd: 10,602nd
                  3rd: 338,639th
                  4th: 79,105th
                  5th: 451,80th

So I’ve had a mix of good and bad. Always next season!

I don't think its that crazy, its same as asking how did I manage to go from 0 in gw1 to 1.1mill end of Dec.
Can be a game of fine margins, and wrong captain points can kill you, it the main pic hauls.

I think a rank multiplier of 16-17 from December to end of season is wild but that's just me....

Such a drop is a surprise maybe, but not a shock for me, combine wrong capt and a few misplaced differentials will do it.

          Bruno+Shaw+DCL to Mane+Dallas+Bamford

          For -4?

My nearest rival has Dallas and Bamford.

Anyone feel nacho could haul against spurs ? I was gonna swap to wood but might do shaw > cresswell instead.

Yeah spurs are leaky, I can see atleast a goal from nacho. Like the shaw>Cresswell move better

Its very possible, last gw generally always has goals.

Spurs Leicester was final game couple seasons ago I think, and it was a goal glut.

I'm keeping and playing Nacho. There's not too many back lines I'd be confident in keeping a CS on the last day.

There is someone out there who will lose their cash league because of the phantom Watkins and Bruno assists.

And there is someone out there who will lose their cash league due to the thousands of other very lucky touches or lucky blocks or lucky deflections or unlucky captain choices or missed penalties.

That's part and parcel of the game.

I agree that all of the things you mentioned are part of the game - that's what makes it fun! Random misinterpretation of the stated ground rules by FPL towers shouldn't be....

I appreciate trying to distance the two scenarios but this isn't a 100% factual evidence based wrong decision.

I reckon OPTA are thinking along the lines of what I posted here - https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/23806562

The more I look at this one, just before he lifts his foot it does look to ever so slightly touch his ankle or high on the boot. The emblem on the ball does start to spin down to confirm this. Don't follow his foot as the touch is before he raises it.

Very difficult to confirm and I was in the definitely didn't touch it camp yesterday.
