Sky Sports Fantasy Football captains to consider for the final day of the season

Billy Lumsden previews the final day in Sky Sports Fantasy Football, including one pivotal captaincy option.

With leaderboard positions and mini-league places still up for grabs going into the final day, there is so much riding on those all-important captaincy choices.

With all games kicking off at 4pm BST on Sunday 23 May, this gives managers the rare opportunity to check each and every teamsheet of the 20 Premier League clubs in action.

With that in mind, there are five captaincy options to consider who may allow you to have that edge over your opponents and take home the bragging rights once and for all.

Amend your Sky Sports Fantasy Football team here

Sergio Agüero- £11.8m

Farewell, Sergio! It would only be fitting for Sergio Agüero to bow out in style, right? Having scored a mere 182 Premier League goals in 274 appearances he will be leaving some big shoes to fill. That said, it has not been the season he might have been hoping for as he has started only seven matches and found the net just twice.

Everton are Manchester City’s visitors in this final round and with the home side needing to set their sights on the Champions League final while bouncing back from the defeat at Brighton, captaining Agüero would usually be a risky move.

However, the luxury of seeing each of the teamsheets will provide a welcome relief from the cursed ‘Pep Roulette’ throughout the season. You can almost guarantee that if Aguero starts he scores on Sunday and brings home the Fantasy Football points in emphatic fashion.

Mohamed Salah – £12m

What more is there to say about Mohamed Salah? With another 22 goals this campaign, the Egyptian will be itching to land his third Premier League Golden Boot and beat Harry Kane to the punch.

Sky Sports Fantasy Football returns have been in plentiful supply for the Liverpool attacker, who has averaged just over seven points per match over his last eight matches. Liverpool also have the advantage of facing Crystal Palace, while Tottenham Hotspur travel to a Leicester City side in dire need of a win for a potential top-four spot.

Salah is third in the Fantasy Football point charts and finds himself in 88.4 per cent of the top 1,000 teams heading into the final fixture. If you do not have him for whatever reason, you may come to regret this by the time 6pm comes around on Sunday.

Patrick Bamford – £8.2m

Patrick Bamford netted his 16th Premier League goal of the season at Southampton on Tuesday and moved on to 226 points for the season, good enough for fifth in Sky Fantasy Football.

Just the fact that Bamford has been linked with a call-up for the England side with the Euros in mind is a testament to how well he has performed during the campaign. His selection percentage inside the top 1,000 (5.2 per cent) doesn’t really reflect how he has defied his critics for large parts of the season.

With 16 points coming against Southampton, Bamford could sign out in style against relegated West Bromwich Albion in front of returning home fans who will be experiencing Premier League football for the first time since Leeds were promoted.

SouBur Sunday

Danny Ings – £9.9m

Speaking of potential England spots for the summer of 2021, Danny Ings could yet add to his own 12 goals for the season. Currently on 154 Fantasy Football points, he is the second-highest scorer at the Saints behind their captain James Ward-Prowse.

Saying that, the talismanic striker may not be a Southampton player for much longer, so whether he is putting himself in the shop window or simply looking to end the campaign on a high, expect to see fireworks from Ings, who recently posted a 17-point haul against Crystal Palace.

Chris Wood – £8.5m

Chris Wood is arguably the form striker in the Premier League right now, with the New Zealander netting eight goals in his last ten matches. He has also created three goals and recorded 86 points during this spell.

Wood can be found in 14.3 per cent of the top 1,000 teams, and with a trip to bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United, he could round off a very rich vein of form with another double-figure haul.

Thinking of a few possibilities for GW 38
    Current bench:
    Godfrey, Veltman, Jota

    1) Veltman -> Coufal (adds Shaw as bench cover)
    2) Shaw -> Cresswell (just Godfrey on bench)

    Play in goals
    a) Ederson
    b) Leno

Have Zaha, Siggy and Watkins and 1 FT 0.7 ITB.

    Transfer one and start one.
Thinking Watkins out to Antonio and start Zaha. Would you consider a hit?

Start Zaha, Liverpool are going to attack, and Zaha should have some success against Trent.

I would probably take a hit yes, Antonio could get a couple. You wouldn't fancy Watkins to get anything more than 5-7 points in that game against chelsea.

    TAA, Dallas, Coufal (Shaw*, Coleman*)
    Salah, Son, Lingard, Greenwood (Jota*)
    Kane, Wood (DCL)

Feel all your players are fairly safe to start, with Greenwood being lowest chance. I personally think Greenwood starts, but even if he doesn't he could get an attacking return off bench. I'd just do DCL move. Very close between Ant and Bam, almost coin flip.

Not sure why people are bringing in Mane? He has had a poor season & even with the upturn in form for Liverpool, his stats aren't great. I know Liverpool will attack in this last game but even so, a punt too far?

    1. FPL Theorist
      • 4 Years
      2 years, 10 months ago

Yeah, you have to wonder if this is just because it feels wrong to most people to do Bruno to a much cheaper mid and leave lots of money in the bank.

    2. fr3d
      • 6 Years
      2 years, 10 months ago

Last week punt on an incredible player who can haul like few others. He's out of form, but worth the risk imo

    3. leeboy104
      • 3 Years
      2 years, 10 months ago

Part of it is that people don't like the idea of having lots of money ITB so want similarly priced mid. There aren't that many stand out options that most people don't already have in many cases.
Depends what you're playing for as well, could be useful differential and a fun transfer too.

The “he’s had a poor season” is a bit of a misnomer when it comes to this week.

      (A) It’s subjective so everyone will form their own personal definition which may/may not be accurate - what is the actual definition of “poor” here? (E.g. you wouldn’t be complaining if you’d had him for Chelsea, Southampton, West Brom, Palce etc, right?)

      And

      (B) How does that definition above actually pertain to his chances on Sunday? (I.e. the most important thing)

At the end of the day he’s an *outrageously* talented forward with a super fixture, and a fixture he has previous in this season (/poor season?) already...

As I said - Personally I see the “he’s had a poor season” stuff as a bit misleading/irrelevant, but that’s just me - and he’s by no means guaranteed anything either

      1. The Big Fella
        • 7 Years

Good answer but I would say 9 goals for a 11.7m forward is a poor season

          • 14 Years
          2 years, 10 months ago

I just find it mad how people have been nodding sagely & trotting out the “he’s had a poor season” so often these last few days as if that old faithful Pearl of wisdom has somehow ordained that a player like Mane can’t score vs Crystal Palace at home in a once off gameweek

Even if he blanks - it’ll be nothing to do with his “poor season” - but there’ll be lots of misled confirmation bias to the contrary going around afterwards unfortunately perpetuating the cycle of misinformation on and on

He has only scored 2 league goals since the 28th January though.

On that logic Brewster may score a hattrick as his poor season doesn't mean anything. Form counts when calculating probability

Honestly this whole thread is just ridiculous

Mane isn’t even in *that* bad of form (he has 6 returns in his last 7 starts, and 20 attacking returns in his last 30 starts) - but even if he was - have people not seen enough of him over the years to know both how good a player he is, and how bad palace can be?

                It’s absolutely nuts.

Don’t pick him if you don’t think he’ll do well - but don’t say you don’t know why people are picking him - you know exactly why

                  Absolutely agree with this.

I've the money and flexibility to bring any player in this week - and it's heart (Aguero) vs head (Mane) *already got Salah and TAA.

Unless there's freaky early news confirming Aguero, I'm almost certainly going Mane.

Pick 2 out of these 3 for GW38:
    A) Pépé (BHA)
    B) Mount (avl)
    C) Torres (EVE)

Last roll of the dice, ideally i want both Bamford and Antonio as both will likely be on pens... its tricky avoiding a hit.
Thoughts on what i could change here?

    Mendy(Forster)
    Taa, Shaw, Rudigar, Dallas, Holding
    Salah, Bale, Lingard, Greenwood, Harrison
    Kane, DCL, Watkins

I reckon Antonio and Bamford out score Watkins and DCL by 4

Wanting both creates another issue...who do i bench!? Greenwood?

Bench Greenwood or Harrison. Nuno final game as wolves manager and they have fans plus it will likely be a second string United team.

Harry Kane at Man City will just mean we have a 14 man squad with an 87m budget next season. As if they weren’t strong enough already they could be unstoppable.

Pep roulette would be too much

I don't think he will work there as their target man. Plenty of players there are used to playing as strikers and scoring and we saw it in recent games with Aguero on the pitch they weren't always feeding balls to him

Ah no, don’t agree. If Kane is playing number 9 and us Kdb behind him with Mahrez etc wide, that attack will be lethal. They will play off Kane for sure.

That is the ideal/expected scenario but what I am saying is I don't expect it to happen overnight as Pep would need change the current system/tactics which was mainly relying on a false 9 not a pure striker like Kane.
On the other hand if Kane will start dropping deep as in Spurs at a certain time, he won't be as appealing as paying 13m for him

But let him first go to City and then we see 😀

Sorry I get you now. Yeah the system will have to change but with Pep that won’t be an issue. They could play a different system every week almost

Do City really want him? Will he be happy playing 1 in 3? Will he keep up with the quick counter attacks? I am sure we will know the answer by August. I personally doubt they will look at him before other top strikers in Europe.

Bamford or Antonio? Have Kane and Ings need to swap out DCL

I think Bamford. West Brom are relegated and manager has said he is leaving before the final game. Couple this with the fact Elland arias is going to have fans for the first time in a PL game in donkeys, it could get messy for WBM
