The 2020/21 season is complete — tell us, how was your Gameweek 38?

Did you manage to field 11 players? Did you use any chips? Were any of your players benched, or injured? Did your transfers pay off? How did your bench perform? Did your captain return?

Most importantly — did you finish strongly in your Mini-leagues or were you pipped to the post? Did you achieve your Overall Rank target?

Share your tales of joy or woe, here:

Had an amazing week! Started out 3rd in ML, chasing by 25 points. Brought in Mane and captained him. Just before the deadline I put Lingard on the bench in favour of Bale. Ended up with a GW rank of ~2800, for my first ever ML win!

Had Meslier and Forster so no keeper. Played Digne and benched Dias.

Brought in Cresswell and Mané for Shaw and Greenwood and captained Mané. Won my minileague by six having trailed by fifteen coming into the gameweek.

71(-4) to jump 30k to 150k OR. Mane captain, ESR 3 points off the bench for Greenwood no show. Disappointing season where I failed to make any decent ground in any week really. Not getting Gundo probably cost me getting into at least top 100k and definitely my ML.

Same here mate....Not getting Gundo when he kept hauling killed my chances of winning the ML and maybe inside top 50k.

He was an anomaly I could not fit in my game plan at the time.

Brought in Kane & Willock for Bruno & DCL.
Finished with a pleasing (yet somehow underwhelming) 63, and managed to sneak into the top 100k (started day at 102k)

      Finished 2nd in most MLs.
Most pleasingly, to my 9yo in one league, who finished with 2415 and 65k OR.

It’s been a long haul of a season. Enjoyed it. Glad for a break.
Huge thanks to all mods, members and contributors. 2020 was pretty sh!77y at times, and FFS has been a rock in the storm and a great support/thing to focus on in such times of uncertainty.

Brought in Mane and Antonio for -4. One delivered; t'other not.

After playing ff for 13 years, I achieved my highest ever points score of 2366. Beat my best my previous best by 62 points. The rank was way down though - 153k.

I attribute this to an article pre-season from Laterz which talked of a much more aggressive transfer policy. Well the results speak volumes.

Normally I'm a conservative player but the game is evolving and strategies must evolve with it. 54 transfers was well above my normal quota but the points haul was well up too.

Thank you for all the excellent articles on here.

In two local mini-leagues.Got Mane for Bruno. Won one & would have won the other by one point if I'd captained Mane instead of Salah. Nor brave enough to go against the popular pick in case Salah went mad. 15k rank could have been 10k.

Fielded 11 with no problems. Worthless last minute WBA goal cost me my work ML, and a ridiculous 89pt score including Ederson 12 pointer cost me MOTM prize in another league. Both sum up perfectly why I'm so happy this season is finally over.

My gameweek 38 was decent. I did manage to field 11 players. I did not use any chips. Saka was benched along with Luke Shaw. The 1 point from Saka instead of 13 points from Bale hurts even now. My transfer of Jota out for Mount did not pay off really. The bench performed excellently with Bale and Dawson getting 19 points between them. Captained Salah which was a decent pick. I did finish strongly in the mini leagues but could not win all of them. The good part was that this was my highest Fpl points tally till now but somehow finished at 88k. Looking forward to the next season. Thanks for all your help during the season Legomanè.

Had an incredible final day in the pub. It felt like every score/event update contained points!

98 on the day, propelling me to my best ever finish and the top 1k which I'd completely written off pre match.

An underwhelming end to a crappy season. 55(-4) giving me my worst overall rank of 220k. I was at 110k in gw10 and then just couldn't seem to progress at all. Not reading too much into it though, it's been such a weird season and most of my big rank drops were just bad luck with short notice double gws etc. Nowhere in my main ML but did manage to win my head to head league somehow. Hopefully next year is more normal!

Watched the Chelsea match and stayed away from my phone, so I was only aware of the goals from the Leicester and Liverpool matches really. Picked up my phone at full time to see only Kane and Salah had any sort of return for me and that Jota had come off the bench for a 2 minute cameo to block my Dawson CS. Auba punt was predictably a disaster too. Was quite nice to have all the disappointment out the way in one fell swoop tbh.

Chunky red arrow, but satisfied with a 40k finish and some ML wins in a season where I couldn't pick a captain to save my life.

3 points behind in my mini league, had Bruno and Shaw, the leader son and only AWB from Utd.

Took a punt and sold Bruno for Mane, DLC for Chris Wood (to fund the upgrade) and played Targett over Shaw.

Captained Mane, guy leading captained Salah. 75 points haul to his 49 for the win plus snuck in the top 50,000 for the season.

Had 15 points to make up in my ML. Took a -4 to bring in Mane (C) and Bamford. Won the ML by 9 points.

I had thought that picking ASM over Willock last week was going to cost me.

Very average season by my standards, 67k, but i had a bit of a battle with mental wellness this year and had deleted and reactivated my team 7 times, missing 5 deadlines completely, including 3 in a row around GW25-GW27.

All in all, a lot of things have put this game into perspective this season, so i'm a better person for it now.

4 red arrows in last 6 GW. MANU v LIV cancellation really didn’t help and threw all my plans out the window and it took 3 GW’s to recover but managed to stay in top 20k but probably a season of what might have been. Happy enough with my GW 38 finish except fro Leeds conceding late on. Looking forward to next year already!

GW 38. Rough - was on double Leeds defence so that last min goal cost me about 12 points. Went for Antonio over Bamford as one of my last week transfers which was a close call I got wrong.
Smooth - brought in Mane. Scored 62 (-4) resulting in only a tiny red arrow of around 300 places.

Overall - it's been a great season for me personally, won all my mini leagues and achieved my highest ever rank of 2597. Never finished in the top 10k before so I'm delighted 🙂

Overturned an 11 point mini league deficit and smashed my way into the top 100k on the final day.

Slight wobble towards the end with an Azpi red and Dallas lost clean sheet, but Mane (C) and my dud from the week before (Bale) scoring a brace turned the 11 deficit into an 18 point lead.

Also gave me my 5th top 100k finish. Unthinkable when I was around the 2.5m mark in December.

I think I could've ended up better than 27k if I'd taken some more risks, but that's just hindsight I suppose, I am really pleased with that rank which is my joint best ever I believe.

Usual rubbish final gameweek for me which happens every season. Captained Iheanacho. My mini league rival almost overturned my 23pt lead with his Mane captain punt but luckily for me, he had Azpiliqueta subbed in for Gundogan so I still won.

Smooth: Bale + Son + Meslier > Mane + Raph + Mendy (-4) move -kind of- paid off thanks to Mane (C) decision. I won my country league (NL) from 15 point behind (I was the only Mane capper in first 30 or so).

Rough: I was between Ederson and Mendy and picked the wrong one. I still can't get over the Meslier decision of Bielsa which came out of nowhere and cost me the top100 finish as such chance comes once in a 10 year (at least for me).

Overall quite happy my highest ever OR (123) and my top 10K streak is going on, seven in a row now. It has been the most tiring season ever with non-stop DGW/BGW/chip planning from GW13-14 till the end but ended well for me.

Smooth: saved bench-boost until final GW, had 15 points to make up on my ML Rival, and started the GW at 46,050 OR.
Rough: saw the teams and reralised Bamford not starting and no Ben Mee in Burnley team
Smooth: Ederson in goal saves a penalty!
Smooth: Great scores incoming from Mane, Salah, Coufal, Pepe, Leeds players: with 10 minutes to go, sitting on 108 points and 10 points clear on my rival
Rough: Leeds concede, TAA gets YC
Smooth: 5 minutes after final whistle and I'm on 101 points and 2 points clear of my ML rival.
Rough: BP's get adjusted and my score drops to 99. Tied in points with my rival. Now check transfers and we both did 52 transfers during the season! Dead-heat!
Smooth: final OR of 17212 - first time in Top 20k, and met my goal at start of season to average 65 points, which would have been good enough for top 5k or even Top 1k in most previous seasons.

After 12 consecutive seasons, I finally decided to hang up my boots alongside Aguero. Used my free hit, and brought him for Kane and captained him. Also brought Antonio (for Bamford) , Wood (for DCL), Coufal(for Digne) and Mane (for Greenwood) . Aguero came on, scored a brace. Now we bid farewell to FPL. Thanks everyone for your valuable input throughout the years.

      Smooth for me:
      - Shaw (Castagne bench: 0pts) ➡ > Tierney (6pts)
      - Robertson assist and cleanie (8pts)
      - My team name, "Alexander Annulled" was vindicated by my ML rival and me both captaining Trent
      - Although 5pts was underwhelming for my captain, that made 3/3 defender cleanies
      - Foden goal, Mahrez assist (6pts each)
      - Kane goal and assist (10pts each)
      - Bale, Aguero and Saka came off the bench for get 4 goals (24 pts together)
      - That made 6 goals in a SGW, which is a record for me this season
      - 75 points this week and gained 37 points on my ML leader
      - Highest OR of the season for me at 374k (up from 3.5m in GW13)

      Rough for ML leader:
      - Schmeichel own goal (-2pts)
      - Azpilicueta rec card (-2pts)
      - Greenwood no-show brought Ward-Prowse off the bench (2pts)
      - Nothing from Dallas, Ings or Wood
      - Took a hit
      - 38 points for his worst GR of the season (5,987,946)

      Smooth for ML leader
      - He still beat me by 5 points.
      - I would have drawn with him if I'd captained Kane or Aguero
      - I would have beaten him if I captained Bale

Smooth; Decent last move, Bruno back to Mane, for a 71 point week. Finished at 600k, worst season ever, but some sort of recovery after being at 1.1m in GW28. Returns from Salah(c), Coufal, Son, Mane, Raphina, Kane and Bamford.

Rough; Keane 0, Antonio only blank attacker with 2.

Special mention to my 11 year old Emilia for finishing at 922k in her first season. Would've been higher if she'd done the Bruno>Mane swap but she insisted on dealing with Cancelo!

Won the mini league by leveling a 7 point deficit and having 1 less transfer than my opponent.

He transferred in Trent and kept Fernandes giving me less differentials but severely weakening his team

I transferred in Bamford to give me Bamford, Iheanacho and Martinez (coming off the bench for Areola)

While he had Antonio, Mendy and Vydra (coming off the bench for Fernandes)

Fine Margins but he was punished for limiting my differentials instead of brining in Mane. Maybe he didn't know but from what I seen he does his research and think he was trying to be slick.

Also had Coufal first on my bench over Rudiger. I should of played him over Rudiger because he had Rudiger and Mendy and banked on Chelsea conceding but really thought Chelsea would keep a cleansheet and tried to minimise the damage.

Smooth - Just about managed to hold on to a top 100k finish

Rough: A decent team on paper largely misfired just at the wrong time, and nowt from my two final day transfers, Dallas and Antonio wasn’t quite what I expected at kick-off.

Smooth: My seemingly mad differential, Gareth Bale, emerging from the Tottenham bench to win me one of my main mini-leagues in the dying moments of the season.

Overall, apart from the drawn out game-weeks, it’s been a fun campaign and more than happy with a ninth consecutive year in the top 100k (31k)

GW38 Bench Boost ROUGH - my girlfriend saved her benchboost until the last day of the season (rookie error imo) but had 3 Utd players so all 3 outfield Bench players autosubbed in anyway, and her Bench keeper was Schmeichel so her total benchboost score was minus 2 !! Ended up 2nd in work ML as a consequence. Lesson learned!

I was 30 points behind in the final week having already made up 20 the week before. He was top 10k and I was 32k 2 weeks back. I brought in mane and he covered me but did not captain. He scored 54. I got a penalty save from ederson, mane captain and two bale goals to finish on 85 and win the mini league. I made up 100 points in 9 gws. Went from 150k to 10900 and overhauled someone who had been top 10k for several weeks. He never saw me coming 🙂

Was 40 points behind the leader in my ML before the last GW, changed Son for Pepe and Shaw for Tierney (-4). Having captained Mane I ended up with 100 (104-4), while he had 59 winning me the private league 1 point ahead (and improving my rank from 113k to 65k), amazing end !!!!

Finished just inside the top 200K, but ended on my proudest notes.

GW 37 transfer: Jota --> Willock, so I could fund

GW 38 transfer: DCL --> Aguero.

If only I'd had the cajones to captain him!

      Meslier to Casilla
      Semedo to Dallas
      -4

Great on paper looking at the form and fixture, Dallas not really looking like a defender etc ...

If I had simply done nothing I would have had 10 points rather than 1 point after the 5 (-4) that I ended up with.

Just an example of the small margins we navigate

Sums up my season really as it didn't make a difference anyway!

On the other hand, I came back from 17 points down to win FPL draft on the final day (and the cash to go with it).

My third best finish in a 10 year FPL career. I finished overall 5,912. Didn’t worry about team value, done last minute transfers, Held onto my chips for longer. Didn’t play my second wildcard until GW 36. Got to be happy with my final position.

      Saved lockdown for many.

I support a lower league team where I could also watch pay per view for a tenner at 3 pm on Saturday iFollow.

Many will say that's steep but I'm saving £50 on petrol and 5 hours travel, or more on the train plus the ticket etc and £8.74 went to the club. It's not huge but £40k of weekly income makes a difference to league 1 and 2 clubs. Shows you the chasm with Premier League and the Championship.

So i suspect Covid-19 has smashed that old structure up somewhat but we'll see. The 3 pm Saturday restriction on domestic football on live TV in England.

      So

Its all subjective and there's no right way of doing it. I'm a traditionalist myself - love to see the return of eight 3pm kick offs in the top flight and just one Super Sunday and one MNF.

Personally, I've no hope in hell of watching more than one televised fixture a week and Sat 3pm is my time to listen on the radio, so I love the excitement of multiple games happening at once.

This just a mediocre bragging post as I’ve waited over decade to be able to post one!

I know a lot of people have had a terrible season and are happy for it to be over... but I finally won the mini-league I founded with friends 14 years ago yesterday. I’ve been playing for 14 years, lurking on here for 10 and frankly I’ve always been way too fond of a wild punt and never really kept up with the intricacies of the season as a whole to ever be any good. Never ghost-shipped a single season but my history is fairly mediocre.

Not sure why that changed this season but I personally enjoyed the chaos and in the end I lead my ML the more or less the whole season to an emotional victory.

My main lesson learned was to learn the difference between the intuition of someone who is informed against that of someone who is uninformed. For 13 years I was the latter, making punts because of a hunch or a dream that rarely worked. This season I kept myself informed, kept up to date with the tiny details that suddenly turned my hunches into informed risks and they paid off.

Thanks everyone and good luck for next season!

Nothing special by community standards... 108K it’s my second highest (got 69K once) but to be honest after new year I stopped taking risks as it became clear I might win the mini-league and focused on that over OR. Feel I could pushed on and chased down top 25k had I had the shackles off but who knows. Next year let’s see!

Not sure I would advise that because its difficult to have a good bench in GW1 without taking too much away from your first 11. All the good players from last season will have price hikes and lack of funds often means you have to go super cheap on bench players.

      To win FPL...

There's a huge amount of luck needed to win FPL.

You cannot allow fear to influence your decision making.

You have to be brave and make decisions that go against the majority.

You need some differentials inorder to win.

I reckon thinking about lessons learned is often looking for something that isn't there.

The only thing I will take away from this season is not to panic if I have a poor start and to make sure I don't shoot myself in the foot by making decisions which I know to be stupid at the time but still doing them e.g. selling Kane based on one poor match on the opening day in favour of buying Martial, who I have always thought was a poor player.

        • 7 Years

Yeah I can't disagree with this.. I was in 2 million OR up to GW15 or so, but manage to be in 80k in the end of the season..

I still regret some decisions, though (benching Dallas twice when he hauls, not bring in Mane when I really wanted to bring him in and he hauled, canceled my BB last minute just because LEE didn't have a DGW, not trusting Martinez when I should be, etc. etc.)

I've learned beyond doubt that you really don't need to go *that* differential to make gains. One 'rogue' pick or captaincy every few weeks is more than enough to steal a march - it's the timing that's crucial.

Finally, I've learned that you really don't need to take hits. Proper planning is far more important than catching a player's one plum fixture. I took zero hits this season, it took a hell of a lot of willpower and clearly some luck too, but led to my best ever OR of 436.

Next year I'll try even harder not to let my own 'hunches' cloud my judgement. I'm getting better at trusting the data and only the data but still some work to do on that front!

Thanks for the Scoutcasts. A real perk to working from home!

I feel like every year we say "don't ignore the bandwagons"

      Bandwagons I ignored this year:

      DCL GW1-10
      Soucek mid-season
      Gundogan
      Iheanacho
Owned Bamford for 1GW all season

This is another great Q in itself.

        For me:
Gundo for about half of the returns
        Lingard completely
        Son when it mattered

      2. Brimble82

I ignored Lingard. Single-handedly added 200k to my rank over a 5-8 GW window!
I'm even worse than 'ignoring' though. I get stubborn.
Someone in a ML will say 'best jump on xxx (ie Lingard)', I'll mock them for it, not get the player in, and then stubbornly refuse to acknowledge that they were right and I was wrong, whilst my rank tumbles and then pass me going in the opposite direction.

Lesson learned for next year... don't be such a stubborn, arrogant, pri...!

Agree with you on the 'believing' point.
I'm ashamed to say - I did it with Mo when he signed for Liverpool.
I tried winding up some Liverpool mates by saying that £40m was a lot of money for a failed Chelsea reject.

Needless to say, that was not my best season finish!

I am similarly stubborn but equally there is a good reason for it. Unless its a proven heavy hitter who we know will be fairly consistent over the season, there is no point jumping on a player after they have scored a shed load of points over several weeks as you have already missed their points. Its just too late and the chances are they have been over-performing and will regress.

This is exactly what happened with the player you mentioned Lingard. Many missed his points and then got him in too late just in time for a run of blanks. Its just impossible for players to keep scoring game after game. It goes against stats and probability so sometimes the best thing to do is just let them go and try and identify an alternative option. This game is all about having players at the right time and not falling between the gaps.

I was cursing myself for opting for McCarthy over Martinez in GW5 but eventually I resigned myself to the fact I was never going to get him as it felt pointless and wasnt going to assist my climb up the ranks. A lot of his clean sheets were quite lucky as well as it was noticable to me that Villa were conceding a lot of chances.

Avoiding him at that point proved to be the right move as he only kept 1 clean sheet in the last 12 games.

          1. Brimble82

Goobs, I wholeheartedly agree with you.
Thing is with Lingard this season, I was stubborn whilst he was getting points, then succumbed when he wasn't because I feared his EO! There is so much that helps us from LiveFPL, but some of the time it can create decisions based in fear rather than instinct!

The key, as you say is not to get the right players - it's to get players at the RIGHT time!
Now, where did I put that 2021/22 sports almanac?

Haha yes, I would like that almanac too! I know, its so difficult timing transfers right so you get them at the right time. Really all you can hope for is to get it right more often than you get it wrong.

Bringing someone in after they have scored a run of points never sits comfortably with me and I will normally be inclined to let them go. Occasionally it will backfire like that season when Aaron Ramsey and Yaya Toure killed it. I ignored them for most of the season which ended up being to my downfall as they somehow kept it up for most of the season.

What I will say though is never make decisions based on ownership/EO.

Biggest lesson in terms of what had the biggest impact on my rank was when to play my BB. Played it after my 2nd WC and ended up becoming more of a hindrance as I delayed playing it and had to field a weaker Starting 11 for weeks followed by taking multiple hits to re-downgrade my bench and re-upgrade my Starting 11. Next season I aim to play my BB the week before my 2nd WC.

I think I was just largely unlucky this season but one thing I did which I guess was a mistake was over doing it with differentials too early in an attempt to try and make up ground after a bad start.

I ignored Kane, Son and Salah for too long. I had a midfield of Sterling, Mane, Bruno (when he was low owned), Rashford and Foden. Sterling and Mane were often my captain picks as well and I just got nothing from them.

I would actually pinpoint the last 2 games of GW4 as being quite season defining. Those 2 ridiculous scorelines between Villa and Liverpool and Utd and Spurs inflicted a significant amount of damage. Monster scores from Watkins, Grealish, Salah, Son and Kane and I didnt own any of them. Being a Liverpool fan as well that particular evening makes me shudder just thinking about it!

Biggest lesson learned from this year for me: I will completely ignore BB chip next year, never make a plan for it and use randomly when I like the look of my bench. Many people including myself took hits, brought sub GKs and tied a lot of money on the bench and lost more in the process than won by the chip itself. It was OK in last years when we did WC34-BB35 or even WC36-BB37 but this year was different.

For example, due to changes in my WC strategy, I stuck with Pope as my sub GK for 10 GWs which means 1.5 less money to use for 10 GWs..

Agree, I used the WC in GW25 to set up a DGW26 BB. Got just 12 points from the bench and was stuck for the rest of the season with players like Donkey Calvert-Lewin who was brought in for the great fixtures in the DGW.

This is exactly right on BB, just play it when injuries and fixtures look promising.

The constant talk of 15 double game weeks then Rudiger is benched and it's all immaterial.

I did okay on mine for the game week rank, but it seemed to be the main driving strategic objective for the over planners who love this game.

Here's one for you. Probably the first time I managed to successfully use the FH, BB and TC - still only finished 175k.

      TC on KDB GW27 for 16x3 = 48pts, 46k GW rank
FH in BGW29 for 67pts, 190k GW rank
BB in GW35 for 146pts, 42k GW rank

So don't worry about the chips so much!

        146pt BB!!!! That's baller!

        I mean... a 48pt TC isn't half bad either!

Great luck for those who get it but hardly a pointer for clever play. Possible to get 100 points in swings that could make 100 000 places. For what?

well that's basically my point - we can get hung up on prepping for the perfect BB or saving the FH for the right week and it made no real difference because the other 35 weeks were pretty average!

I would love a purest version of the game, where we can play without chips completely - maybe a 'New Year WC' - but strip everything else away.
I'd even happily see the C option removed.
Just base it on whose starting XI scores more each week.

Is it time to change some FPL rules?
We cannot change the past 15 months of covid but it definitely highlights areas for improvement.
Free hits: Why not a compulsory free hit in GW38?
The BPS system. Seems odd how extra points are handed out. Surely it should relate to performances on the field and not for instance getting extra BP's because they scored.
Wild Cards: Maybe a wild Card could be bought rather than given. Say 30 points for each 1.
Bench boost and TC must be kicked out. Just adds to the luck rather than trying to improve the skill.
Price rises and drops: There should be a public algorithm. Who knows FPL towers are not using it to help their own teams. An early or late transfer should not be punished either.

My favourite change would be for an automatic -8 every week but you get 3 free transfers. If you don't use them you still get the -8

They could also consider not allowing any player to be owned by more than 50% of players - so that no player's EO (overall) is over 100% ... imagine not being able to buy a player because he is "sold out"

Next year, I will ensure I have time before the GW1 deadline to build the entire squad and adjust strategy accordingly based on incoming news, just in case it's necessary to do so.

Also I will try harder not to miss deadlines. Simply meeting deadlines probably has a higher impact than deliberating the 50/50 calls for an entire week! (I had Martial for 19 GWs this season...)

I'll probably use more players from Arsenal than any other team again, so there's no earning to be done there. I think I was a bit unlucky tbh, and it's no fun to conform for the sake of conformity.

Continuing from Juande's point, I think it pays to play your own game, based on your own team, when you are informed. However, following Dark side of the Lonn's point, perhaps I will follow bandwagons more in times when I am busier with life, and less informed.

I've learned that there's no point in planning to play the game differently from year to year because I never do. I just accept that as long as you keep to a rough set of guidelines, nothing else is in your power and the rest of it is just down to luck. That should see you around the top 20k every year give or take a few thousand.

rule 1 - a good starting team effects first quarter of season. Thus for gw1, don't invest in too many or too much £m in unproven players in prem league (havertz+werner=17m). We already set aside about 15-20m for 3-4 championship players as bench fodder. To add an extra 17m of hav+werner, you have about 40m of unproven assets.
rule 2 - Don't be stubborn hitting wildcard. If you feel the slide (and you are always 2 players behind where you want to be, hit the WC, button. That 2 players compromises your team, and you are effectively bringing players you don't want.
rule 3 - don't ignore bandwagons if they are cheap, as you don't need to tear up team, Plus can always move on quickly, Keep a slot free for that bandwagon player and accept it may be hit or miss. e.g. gundo>lingard>jota>greenwood>willock.
rule 4 - don't hold on to injured players for too long, with all the cancellations and covid, you need a full bench ready at all times.
rule 5 - if you are on a bad run, and it is effecting you mentally step away from FPL and do something else. It stands to reason if you investing 10hrs+ per week of FPL research and content, and still doing badly then it's not helping. So investing less hours is not going to make things worse. It'll help mentally recharge. Obviously don't ignore it totally, but maybe book your transfers in ahead and do some minimal research a day before deadline.
rule 6 - a bit of a contentious rule but something that is probably making FPL increasingly difficult - keep eye out on fpl cloners in your ML. More fpl players seem to be just cloning a youtubers full team. A person in my ML (his record of only once ever in top 100k, but usually around 500k) copied a youtuber, near transfer for transfer throughout the season to end up around 1-2k). If you see it in your ML make sure to associate that player with the youtubers team. I recognised it early then knew his move for each week, it was tough but used the info to help me win in end. It is what it is. With more money involved nowadays, it's something of an inevitability.

Last year finished 2618 with 2399 points. No hits.
This year finished 600k with 2250 points. One hit for BB in DGW35.

The only thing that really happened differently was that I didn't hit a big rank spike week. Last year GW6 I went from 499k to 44k and stayed there with a 90 pointer. Was in the top 30k soon after and 602nd in lockdown. Never had that this year.

My failure to be on Son & Kane early cost me, and my selling KdB around GW16/17 and going Sterling instead of Gundogan also compounded my rank slide. Two simple mistakes!

Lesson learned - don’t completely mess up the structure of my squad to prepare for a bench boost in a double gameweek. My BB returned a net 2 points and in the subsequent 8 weeks I benched a total of 141 points. Better approach would be to deadend the squad into a DGW and WC straight after.

Honestly I think it is getting more difficult each year to get a higher rank. I'd argue that 10k this year for example is a relatively greater achievement than 10k was 5 or 10 years ago.

My season history since I started playing more seriously is interesting, wonder if it's similar for other managers.

        17/18 season - OR 15k, total points 2297.
        18/19 season - OR 25k, total points 2343.
        19/20 season - OR 41k, total points 2307.
        20/21 season - OR 36k, total points 2443.

So I got 150 more points this year than I did in my best ever season.

Do we think this is down to greater competition from more managers or is it just that some seasons are higher scoring than others? It's probably a mixture of both.

This was a high scoring season, mainly because of the unusually large number of double gameweeks.
The top three this season all beat the previous record highest total set ten years ago when there were even more double gameweeks because of severe winter weather (but no chips apart from one wildcard).

A big lesson leaned for me this year is to get on bandwaggons earlier. I've only owned Bamford for 1 GW all season and didn't get on Chelsea defence when everyone had at least 1. Something for me to work on next season

After 4 years of playing FPL 'seriously' I think I've learned the importance of a good start and the importance of a good goalkeeper. The last 4 seasons have mainly had the same pattern for me: a slow start and gradually make gains to end up 15k-40k by the end of the season. I'm like that horse in the grand national who is outpaced and out of the picture after the first circuit but keeps plugging away to finish a distant but respectable 6th. I'm not sure how to improve my start for next season but it won't be for lack of trying.

Another pattern I've noticed is that I never get triple captain chip right (ane curse and Bruno blank this season) which is mainly down to bad luck. But more importantly, I never get the GK position right. I alternated between Pickford, McCarthy, Pope, Sanchez and Patricio this season who combined for a paltry 124pts. Not including the cost of transfers to change keepers. For comparison, Ramsdale got 123pts. Set and forget on Martinez would have probably gotten me from 36k to 6k. That's one decision (or chain of decisions) that cost me 60+ points. Next season I think I'll pick a keeper that'll be locked in for the first 8 GWs and then I'll re-evaluate whether to keep long-term or get the emerging Martinez/Pope type keeper. Only allow myself 1 FT on the keeper position all season barring injury.

A good start is very imporant. I know it sounds cliched but if you start well, you are less likely to make desparate calls later on, to make up ground. I tried to avoid hits early on and kept faith with some players longer than needed and avoided some players thinking I've missed the boat (Dallas, Justin, etc for me). For some players, you are never too late to join the bandwagon. Also, 1/2 more hits to get the in form players are probably worth it, for points as well as team value.

The WC chip is very powerful. If you can save it and take an extra hit or two over 2 GWs, I'd prefer that. Current plan is to save WC 1 till the last possible GW if the winter break makes schedules similar to GW18 and GW19 this season.

Captaincy is key. I'm going to look at the who I am goign to captain for the next 4-5 GWs before making any transfers. Differential captains here and there are great as well. If you're at a good rank, the differential captains can help you push further up.

Lastly, it's a game. I know some of us have money involved in some MLs and stuff but at the end of the day, it is a game. You have to have fun, take risks and enjoy the game. Celebrate your good decisions and calls but don't dwell too much on the bad ones. You will always have an opportunity to make up and achieve your goals.

Having had some ridiculously good seasons and plenty of mediocre ones I think what I’ve learnt is to make sure you have most of the few outlier mega scorers all season (son, Kane, Salah, Bruno etc) and then be lucky with the streaky ones (soucek, perreira, nacho, Trent(?), lingard).

Better to stick with one keeper probably than waste transfers but again luck plays a big part with pen saves and lucky clean sheets - Leeds and villa keepers for example.

Otherwise don’t deviate on captains poll leaders too much and don’t try and be too clever, mostly template is the shield you only need a few swords.

But again luck is an underestimated factor.

Bench Boost held my team back so planning to get out of way week 1 and early WC next season.

Also be bolder in jumping early on form players as missed out this season by being one or two weeks late and missing hauls. But how to identify who to jump on early before they get a haul is the question? What are the proven metrics/stats to watch out for?

3k overall in GW28. Always finished strong in recent years. This year I managed 9 red arrows in the final 10 weeks, final rank 30k.

Head still in a bit of a spin, not sure what I did wrong, every move backfired and every 50/50 decision went the wrong way. This week summed it up... all week on here I said I was going to bring in Pepe for Jota... in the end I talked myself out of it and did Martinez to Mendy. LOL.

    Thankful for the break.

Pretty similar but not as drastic, OR 200, 8 weeks later 1.7k finish

Every 50/50 wrong, every transfer failed, but I can't complain too much that's probably just the luck I had early season evening out

Won my ML by 30+ points so I’m happy, but I might not join a league next year to see if that helps me do better with OR (finished in top 25k but was blocking in one way or another from GW31 onwards which probably cost me top 10k)

It's not a bad idea if you really want to have a crack at OR.

Until a few seasons ago I used to play a team game where the league was divided into two teams and the winning team (total pts) were paid for by the losing team at the end of season curry. It was such good fun and kept everyone interested all season, but if you look at my rank history it's not hard to guess when we stopped doing it!

Rough for Villa: 11th on 55 points.

55 points has been enough for 7-9th in the PL for the past 20 years (and probably more, but I couldn't be arsed to check any further)

Then again this season, without crowds, has seen a lot of teams get away points they wouldn't normally have got.

Works both ways though. Lesser teams didn't have the home advantage to help them steal 3 points either.

I think it's less about crowds and more about teams that were in Europe having to play an outrageous number of games squeezed into a season that was a month shorter than normal. This made it easier for teams that were not in Europe to take points off them.

This make more sense. Although it should be noted that Villa got 30/55 points in the first half of the season.

Managed to boost my overall rank to 794K after being at 1.2K most of the time. Quite happy with that, along with winning my ML!

This was my first year playing and using these forums, so many thanks to all for advice and I have learnt a lot!

If teams finish level on points with the same number of transfers, what's the next deciding factor?

Just a quick note to everyone who runs FFS to say THANK YOU. The content is always first rate but this year especially so. It’s been a huge help and a comforting place to escape to during the worst months of the pandemic.

Superb effort everyone, keep up the good work.

Seventh year on the trot top 100k, couldn’t do it without you.
