Maybe but run captain pick each day in between. Wait until 15th before subbing Jota in in case of surprises.

Stick because realistically how much more are you expecting? Maybe 2 goals from someone which gives 2 points more. Not worth the risk.

  3. How to decide whether to stick or twist?

I think the qustion you should be asking about captaincy, is:

Am I likely to get more or less points at the end of the MD from switching?

    If "more", then switch.

However, based on what I've been reading since the end of last night's game, it seems that the common logic is more like:

Am I more likely to (a) get a significant amount more than my current captaincy score (e.g. at least 4 points) from one specific player in my team (e.g. the next player; or Ronaldo), or am I more likely to (b) get less than that than that significant increase, or (c) break even, or (d) get a significant amount less (e.g. at least 4 points), or (e) get no return from that captain?

    If (a), then switch.

    What should the question be?

It seems to be the opposite of FPL where people are much less conservative, waxing lyrical about 'upside' and 'ceilings'. The main difference in this regard is the removal of bonus points, which are a set maximum of 3 anyway. You can't score multiple max bonuses (3pts) in a game, but you can still accumulate attacking returns.

Is it just something about tournament football and fear of falling behind in a short format with no time to catch up? How about fear of NOT WINNING!? haha 😀

Surely if you have only one player remaining, your threshold would be less than if you have 4.

Imagine you had once captain chip in FPL for the whole season, and you could move it along each week. You would reject a score of 10, maybe even 15, and keep trying for 20+ score from the start. But with 3 GWs left, you are likely to accept a score of 10. With one GWs left, maybe accept a score of 8.

The likelihood of outscoring your current captain depends on the (amount of) players remaining...

But maybe you have Ronaldo on the last day. It was for this reason that I avoided him, mainly.

              I see what you mean.

Currently though I'm on Lukaka, Kane, Forsberg and Jota.

If the first three all score less than ten (that is before it's doubled) I'd still play Jota.

              (Barring injuries, of course)

The simple way to do it is calculate the expected points from each of your future captains, sum them up and if that value is greater than the points your (c) currently has then switch.

Thanks Ginkapo. But why choose 14pts? Why not do the likelihood of 13pts and/or 15pts and/or 5pts, etc?

So the severity is the most likely score?

If so, it doesn't seem to take into account the distributon of probablilities across the all possible scores, which could be skewed etc.

Confused. Ultimately though, I still think this method is trying to aswer the question, "Am I likely to get more or less points at the end of the MD from switching?"

        2. diesel001

Friday: Spinazzola(c) got 9pts (forget the doubling).
          Saturday: Proposed (c) is Lukaku
          Sunday: Proposed (c) is Kane
          Monday: Proposed (c) is Morata
          Tuesday: Proposed (c) is Ronaldo

Actual points as at Saturday morning = 9
Chance of each (c) scoring more than 9 pts as at Saturday morning (I have used 2 or more goals as a proxy for more than 9 points)

          Lukaku (2 or more goals) = 5/1 = 17%
          Kane (2 or more goals) = 5/1 = 17%
          Morata (2 or more goals) = 6/1 = 15%
          Ronaldo (2 or more goals) = 10/3 = 23%

So the chance that one of my four (captains) scores 2 or more goals as at Saturday morning = 72%. This is above 50% and therefore I should switch to Lukaku(c).

You run the same analysis again tomorrow morning, but judging it against what Lukaku(c) scores.

Thanks Diesel. This looks like a good guage.

It's quite convenient in this case that all your players are strikers needing a specific outcome that will get them 10 points or more haha. That would be my issue with it. But yeah, it seems to be going a way to trying to answer the question in my OP

With defenders it is a bit more work because you have to sum up CS + one goal odds. Midfielders you can use a similar analysis.

It doesn't have to be perfect. Just needs to gauge whether it is more or less than 50%.

          2. Blzbobuk
            • 5 Years
            2 years, 9 months ago

You don’t add the percentage odds (eg add a few more games and you go above 100% which is impossible) to calculate it use the odds of it not happening and multiply them so 0.83x0.83x0.85x0.77=45% chance of it not happening hence still a reasonable risk to take. It flips the other way if lukaku blanks. Key problem is the best chance is on the last day at which time you only have a 23% chance of getting 2 or more goals at which point if you have 1 goal it becomes tricky to justify the risk.

Largely depends on how you want to play. I want to win my mini league so I am sticking on insigne today but if I am well behind on the last day I may go ronaldo.

Cheers BLZBOBUK. It's also a little bit conservative in this case because it's judging "more points" vs "the same or less", where "the same" should really be neutral if possible, I think.

I guess a rough way to balance it would be to go judge the approximate contributions of other avenues to points (like YCs, RC,s OGs, goal being outside the box, winning a pen, etc), and if that number is a bit positive, go conservative, and if it's negative, look to judge "the same or more points" vs "fewer points". And you can do that in seconds or hours, depending on your commitment to being 'accurate'.

If you’ve scored 9 points (times 2) for captain surely it’s a stick.

    - all the main captain options to come are forwards, so 4 points a goal and more likely to score inside the box.

    - to beat 9 points they need to score at least 2 goals. The most they could possibly get is a hattrick so that would be 14 points (5 point gain). Ie there is very little upside

    - if you twist then you’ll think it’s fine as you have 4 more captain chances. What if today’s scores 7? You’ll twist again as it’s less than the 9. So it’s very likely you end up last chance saloon with your final day captain. This i think there is more downside potential than most currently envisage

I’ve got Insigne (8 points x 2) and im really tempted to stick. Im not going to lose much at all by sticking

TLDR - if you twist on a captain who has scored 9 points it’s quite likely you end up with a captain in the last game day and thus higher % chance you end up with 2 points than you currently think

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

Agree to disagree that it’s quite likely I'll end up with a captain in the last game day. But even if it was the case, it's not good practice to split the outcomes like that and then base your decision on the specific situation you are envisioning. It's still the case that players can outscore 8 points before the final day, at which point you can stick again.

    3. Blzbobuk
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 9 months ago

I am sticking on less than 9 currently. However, if you are trying to win the entire game vs a mini league I can see the rationale to twist ie low odds of success but chance to be an outlier.

    4. Drexl Spivey
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 9 months ago

I disagree. Assuming you have decent players left for each day (and you should) you're chances of landing 10+ is pretty high.

Should you stick on 10+, even if one of your players returns14+ after, you're not going to be too gutted about the outcome.

Similarly, if one of your options returns 5 (and again, they should) once you've cancelled the 9, are you really going to be that put out?

Tons of managers will be plugging for Lukaku or Kane. If either of those haul your 9 point differential looks decidedly less enticing.

      1. Flaming Flamingo
        • 7 Years

A Kane or Lukaku brace only gains you 1 point though, whereas if they score only once or blank you face the prospect of losing 6/7 points. I'd be sticking on 9 personally

How many goals are you expecting Belgium and England to score? In order to get significantly more than 9 points they'd have to be involved in three goals, I'm not even sure either team will score that many

Either of those players are capable of 10+, otherwise we wouldn't pay as much for them.

It's not just about their ceiling though - it's about effective ownership.

It depends who you have left. I have Kaku, Kane, Forres, Ronaldo. It’s very hard to imagine they are all blanking so not much to lose unless very unlucky.

I don’t agree with a couple of things you’ve said though ‘just 5 points’ 5 points is a lot in essentially 5 fpl gameweeks of games with no bonus points. Also you don’t HAVE to twist again if you end up on 7 in the penultimate captain and decide at that point to stick an accept you lost 2 points trying.

Yes you’d need a double return to make points but you’d need a lot of players to blank to lose points too. Catching a hattie is huge in this game!

For me the trouble with that team is that nobody runs in behind. Kane drops deep and the attacking players are players who like to get on ball and create. They are all great players but it becomes easier for opposition when they aren’t being turned and the game is played in front.

Personally think 2 from Mount, Grealish & Foden should be selected and 1 of Sancho, Sterling, Rashford to stretch game a bit more and offer some pace.

        Incredible options England have.

Yes, you can move ahead with that.

    Eriksen or Lukaku C?

      Eriksen far better pick:
      - Denmark plays at home against weak Finland, unlike Belgium who will face Russia in St. Petersburg.
      - being on all set pieces Eriksen have way more avenues to points than Lukaku.

To add to the third point: CS +1, goals +1, goals from outside the box (more likely for Eriksen) +1

Hi to all, i am new here.
I think the best pick for today's captaincy at the Uefa fantasy game is Eriksen.
Belgium and Lukaku have a stronger opponent than Denmark.
Denmark are a very strong fro Finland and playing in their home ground.

      Welcome!

Based on fixtures, I do agree. His form is the only issue. I would have gone for him as captain if he had shown little bit of form in recent games.

"Choose. Whether you should believe in yourself, or believe in others. I myself don’t know… I never have. Whether I believed in my own abilities, or whether I believed in the decisions of fellow managers, in the end no one ever knew what the outcome would be. So I guess… you have to do your best to make a decision that you won’t regret."

We have to consider and the stadiums the matches are being held.
That is Denmark's advantage today and Belgium's disadvantage.
Russia is welcoming Belgium at St. Petersburg.
Home game for Russia with their fans.
Belgium would have a hard time today, i think Russia would score at least 1 goal today.

I'm on Erikson but Russia's defence is one of the weakest in this tournament, if not the weakest, behind maybe only Macedonia's. They conceded 12 goals in their Nation's league B lol.

When Eriksen plays for the National team, he is instrumental.
You are right Holmes, his form is not good, especially when his team, Inter has conquererd the Serie A.
But with the national team, he has made some excellent displays.
And one of the reasons i back him, is the weak in my opinion, Finland team.

  15. Proedros78

De Bruyne's absence is also one negative at picking Lukaku for today.
If Belgium was at full strength, things would be different, but with De Bruyne (out) and Eden Hazard (out of form) Lukaku wouldn't get the passes he needs in order to score.
He can score 1 goal, but that is not enough points. A forward must at least score 2 goals and have an assist.
It is not the game Belgium would score 3 goals, that is what i think.

Yeah this is what's putting me off putting on him. I wouldn't have picked him at all if they weren't playing against Russia. Btw, you can use the reply button to reply to posts instead of posting new ones.

Staring Sterling would be a very strange decision from Southgate wouldn’t it?

Sterling’s form has been at best ‘awful’ for the last 6 months. Grealish should start ahead of him no question in my opinion

yep and the exact same for rashford. Sometimes I think rashford has forgotten how to play football, his touches are carless and his technique has become awful most of the time.

To see sterling and rashford start would be a strange decision form wise. I like cesc team of mount, grealish and foden behind kane. Not alot of pace granted but alot of technique. If not I hope southgate adapts to each game. England will need the likes of grealish and foden with their technique dribbling against teams with a low block so I have a feeling sterling starts

And there is no assurance that Lukaku will score twice.
