Scout Reports

How does Jadon Sancho compare to Bruno Fernandes and other United FPL assets?

One of the longest transfer sagas in recent times has come to an end after Manchester United announced that they have reached an agreement with Borussia Dortmund for Jadon Sancho.

The 21-year-old joins for a fee in the region of £73m and has signed a five-year deal, with the option of another 12 months.

Sancho has emerged as one of the world’s most exciting players since moving to Germany, but what exactly will he bring to the Red Devils, where does he fit in and what impact will he have in Fantasy Premier League (FPL)?

We’ll attempt to answer those questions in this Scout Report.

HISTORY AND STATISTICS

What impact can Sancho have as an FPL asset at Manchester United? 1

“I asked him, what’s the dream? He looked me in the eye and said he wanted to play for one of Europe’s top clubs and represent his country to make his family proud.”

Louis Lancaster, former Watford youth coach

Sancho’s youth career began at Watford, before his outstanding talent brought him to Manchester City at the age of 14. Having impressed in the academy, he looked all set to join the senior set-up, but a contractual dispute saw him make the bold choice of moving to Germany.

He joined Dortmund, a club renowned for giving rookies a chance, and has since developed into one of the best young players in world football.

Since making his debut with the Bundesliga club in 2017, he has gone on to score 50 goals in 137 appearances in all competitions, and has now delivered three seasons of elite production.

Indeed, it’s hard to find another Englishman who can match his attacking output since 2018/19:

BUNDESLIGA STATISTICS SINCE 2018-19

SeasonAppearancesGoalsAssists
2018/1926 (8)1214
2019/2025 (7)1716
2020/2124 (2)811

The German top flight is different to England, of course, and we’ve seen the likes of Timo Werner and Kai Havertz struggle to adapt in the Premier League after posting eye-catching numbers in the Bundesliga.

At international level, he has had to settle for a peripheral role at EURO 2020 so far, but clearly has a bright future and it surely won’t be long before he adds to his 20 senior caps and three goals.

PROFILE

“He manages to create dangerous situations with his technique, his speed, his dribbling. There are other dribblers with similar qualities in the Bundesliga, but they don’t have his outstanding decision-making.”

Thomas Müller

Sancho is a quick, attacking winger who can get fans on their feet.

He has been used on both flanks at Dortmund, but largely on the right, which is where he will probably be stationed at United, at least initially.

A real risk-taker in the final third, he is as much a creator as he is a scorer, and last season alone, ranked in the top five players in the Bundesliga for assists, chances created and big chances created – a feat made all the more impressive considering that he wasn’t on the pitch for eight top-flight matches, mostly due to injury.

Another important factor to consider is how good he is at progressing the ball up the pitch, something United have sometimes struggled with under Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

“I’m a bit tricky, direct, confident – I believe in myself in one-on-one situations”.

Jadon Sancho

THE PROSPECTS – AND WHERE DOES HE FIT IN AT UNITED?

Had the idea of starting with Son instead of Bruno and spreading that 2m, Son + Salah rotates well for captaincy. Question is whether Son can be trusted with captaincy.

For reference, Salah + Son gives : nor, BUR/wol, WAT, crp, CRP, bre, AVL

I had him in most of my drafts but considering Son instead after some great feedback on the team I posted.
Son rotates captaincy with Salah really well, it just depends if I think he can do as well as last season (pretty dubious at the moment).

My current draft is without him, yes. I'm looking at only Salah as a premium whom I would captain in 5 of the opening 6 gameweeks. This enables me to spread the cash and have a very pleasing squad.

you could argue that with sancho added, United get extra creativity further up the pitch and bruno might drop a tad deeper since it is not as essential for him to be in and around the box anymore. For now that is just a potential outcome, and I wouldnt say it is super likely either, but still something to consider. With a creative force like sancho everything will not have to go through bruno either, which might hurt his output. Would be similar to the pogba effect people observed last season, in that when pogba was on the pitch bruno scored less points (havent checked how big this effect was).

On the other side, with sancho United get an extra force in attack and it is not unlikely that they will score more and create more. Maybe bruno will have added goal threat since he now can play with a winger that does not look for a shot everytime every single time he gets the ball...

All in all I would say it is difficult to asses at this time, but going without bruno is very risky considering his ownership and the fact that he has been a consistent point scorer for some time now. For me it is better to start the season with bruno and then see how he gets on, especially considering his fixtures

Would have to keep an eye on pre season, Bruno is getting his much needed rest and he’ll be ready for next season, I personally think in a team scoring more goals with Bruno as the main cog surely can only be good news

    Nicely done article here. Thanks

There's something very subjective which I think could be a huge boost for Sancho:

Man U currently doesn't have a goalscoring talisman in open play. They create lots of chances (relatively) but don't have one/two specific targets. It's the entire attack

This boosts the attacking numbers of anybody who joins, as they'll both improve the attack (if they're fast enough) and gain from that improvement too

But the real explosive potential is if that new guy, especially with enough hype, becomes the talisman. Bruno did this when he came in, continued for a season and a half, then seemingly dropped off a bit late last season. Rashford, Martial, Cavani and Greenwood have rotated this role under Ole too, but less reliably long term

I think if Sancho comes in as the team's unofficially assigned talisman, maybe due to the transfer hype, his numbers could explode early doors. The circumstances are similar to Salah at Liverpool (primed for a talisman), Jimenez, Ings, Auba and, err, Bruno at Man U. It's all a big IF though

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years
      2 years, 9 months ago

Well, another way of spinning this is the potential negative effect on Bruno's numbers. The addition of Sancho makes United's midfield assets a little crowded - not as bad as City's, but enough to worry about from an FPL perspective.

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

Yeah. Point-sharing, like late last season. That would make the cheapest nailed one very good for FPL. Maybe a double-up in attack with Shaw/Wan-B ATB. A lot can happen over the first few weeks, so it's exciting

    2. Wrong Captain Choice - Ag i…
      • 14 Years
      2 years, 9 months ago

So TLDR you are wistfully assigning Sancho the 'talisman' role in your mind? Surely the team still revolves around Fernandes and it could take Sancho and the Man United team mates time to settle together as a squad. And 'hype' does not a talisman create. It has more to do with effectiveness on the pitch.

Ronaldo was hyped up when he first came to Man United for example. But this this not make him a talisman. In fact he was generally inconsistent.

One thing is for sure though - Sancho will be well rested after his sabbatical during the Euros!

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

I put as many ifs as possible to prevent this, even explaining when Bruno stepped away from the talisman role so it's relatively vacant now and nothing's guaranteed since this is all a hunch, but here we are

Sancho I think should just Jack up Utd’s overall attacking output another gear from 73 goals up to 80+ (Man City got 83 last season) and Bruno will just hoover up goal involvements (and therefore baps) as per usual on his way to 230-270 points

He had his little barren period from GW26-33 (1G 1A in 8 games)…

But what did we expect with Ole doing stupid things like starting him on a Thursday night Europa 2nd legs when already 4-0 up vs Sociedad etc

And even though he was running on fumes, he still bounced back with 2 goals in his last 4 games

With a breather for a few weeks now under his belt, a penalty every 4 games or so, the odd DFK, a goal from play here & there plus double figure assists… he’ll be raring to go once again

That GW1 fixture was 6-2 last time out, wouldn’t bet against it again despite Leeds’ Elland Road solidity

      Why Pukki out of interest?

He blanked in 25 of his previous 33 premier league games…

Including 17 of his last 19

And that was WITH Buendia in the side… without Buendia, and with several good striker options (Nacho, Watkins, Antonio, DCL, Bamford, Wilson, even Toney) available he looks a bit risky

Bielsa is quite flexible tactically. Their great strength is their relentless pressing - a full pre-season of rest and preparation should be even more beneficial to Leeds than other squads, in my mind.
In terms of Dallas though, I go the extra 0.5 to get Harrison if you wanted company for must-have Raphinha.

If he matches last season (blowing his XG out of the water) he would get about 130 points as a midfielder

That’s about 20 points less than Soucek for example

Reclass has killed him stone dead

(If he doesn’t match last season, and only plays to his XG, or below, then it’s even worse)

For me, I like certainty in my gameweek 1 side.

I like players who have a good track record in the premier league.

Not only that ... but they need a settled manager in charge of team.

So I don't like Son under Nuno.

And I don't like Digne and DCL under Rafa. Yes, these are proven FPL players and Rafa is a good coach, but this is a completely new situation for the players and the manager and we can't be sure how everything will come together. Compare this to Salah under Klopp. You know exactly what you are going to get. It's settled. It's familiar. And that's what you should look for in your gameweek 1 team.

LR12 makes an interesting point though. Adding one new piece to a settled team/system (i.e. Sancho on the right) can work, but revamping a squad like Chelsea did is much more risky (Werner gameweek 1 last season anyone?).

    What does everyone else think?

Partially, but not so fundamentalist about it myself.
Of the promoted teams, I usually stay clear, but Toney seems an inexpensive calculated risk.
I'm avoiding Palace - but would have done anyway; Spurs - it take your point, but I'm willing to gamble that Son has the quality to deliver and can't really be restrained by Santos whether or not Kane stays. I wouldn't consider any other Spurs assets though.
At Everton there were only 3 players I would look at anyway, and I don't see defence-first Benitez having a negative impact on Pickford and Digne. The other one is DCL whom I don't see altering his game - the main question is whether a creative midfielder is brought in to supply him.
Other incoming players such as Sancho or Buendia - I can accommodate one or two, but the bulk of my Starting XI I would want to be safe, tried-and-tested FPL treasures, yes.

I agree with this. Target tried and tested players playing for tried and tested managers. Try limit your punts to the less expensive options.

I thought this is common sense .. lol. - until have to make as a hot topic 😀

Avoid , wait and see how they settle even he is someone overhype like Sancho .

And DAKA too. Overhype by some.

For me I create my own philosophy in creating team.

          FNCPE.
          Flexible
          Nailed
          Consistent
          Proven
          Explosive (bonus)

          Team must be Flexible.

The player must be nailed , avoid City , Chelsea players unless u have backup.

The player should be consistent e.g Salah, Kane. Consistenly give among the highest point year by year.

Proven - even not consistent like have injury but if he proven like Lamptey, he is in my team.

          Explosive like Barnes is bonus.

If the team flexible and players tick most boxes, I will buy, insyaAllah.

See how Son does under Nuno first.

Sancho is a quality player for a young England International in the Bundesliga. His skills are not in question. But a whole different level of pressure playing with Man Utd on rockstar wages and people overexpecting his saviour qualities to hit the ground running and deliver the league. I hope he rips it up for United but a few good seasons in the Bundesliga is no guarantee of success.

I agree with you on this, I think it's a wait and see with both Spurs and Everton to allow them to settle. I think both managerial appointments were decent and I'd imagine that once a playing system is established they will certainly come into my reckoning, but neither team performed well in the latter part of the season, so they may need some time to regain form.

I made the mistake of taking a few punts at the start of last season and ended up chasing for a number of weeks, so this time round I'm going to try to focus on established players who won't be too risky. In saying that, I also need to decide whether to make a point of staying away from injury prone players like Wilson and Antonio. Both are solid picks when fit, but should we go there knowing their history?

I tried to do this in my GW1 draft, but fixtures can make things a bit difficult. DCL's first 6 are very hard to ignore. Still, knowing it's a new coach's system means I'm more open to switching away early if the first few GWs are disappointing

This was always my rule too.
Then last season I made an exception for Werner.

You know sometimes you come out with some excellent points.
More of this rather than the negative stuff this season.

I agree. How will Nuno’s defensive approach affect Son and at 10m? A wait and see.
Same with Everton. We just don’t know.
Werner was supposedly essential GW1 because of his previous record. Takes time to settle.

      Agreed.

It is very much like life. Try to change more than 2 or 3 things in your own life at the same time and it becomes very difficult. But keep the focus on a few things and it is much easier to incorporate the changes.

So far, Everton have only done one thing, change the manager. But if that manager tries to make the players do a lot of things differently to Ancelotti then it will probably take time to settle.

FF 101. gw1 is a complete lottery with zero form to gauge. Criteria is proven performers, fixture difficulty, squad flexibility and explosive potential.

No need to avoid everton and spurs players because of a new manager though.

Just know it's complete luck if your players start well or not. So pick the players you know have the points in them and make a wish. Then gw2 start trying to fix the mess you've made.

I, too, like certainty, but I also do like to throw in a couple of punts (usually new signings) to make things interesting. Proven, quality players that are great value-for-money.

Bandwagons are easily started early in the season and I think it's worth the risk in a squad of 15 to have 1 or 2 possibilities that can pick up some transfers in if they hit form early on.

Zorc is extremely shrewd and one of the best Sporting Directors in football for over a decade.
He has an eye for talent and players fit into their system. This is why their players don't go on to be great success at other clubs, except for Lewa. None of these players once sold by BVB have hit the heights expected: Goetze, Kagawa, Hummels, Mkhitaryan, Dembele, Gundogen, Pulisic, Yarmolenko, Sahin.

          Son didn't come from BVB.

In fairness, Auba, Gundogan & Pulisic have all generally done extremely well & would be classed as very successful transfers, along with Alexa who you mention

Auba & Pulisic had bad seasons last year allright, but Pulisic is still only 22 and had injury problems - Arsenal got a couple of smashing years out of Auba but he’s getting older now

Dembele hasn’t totally flopped with 30+ returns in 80 games for barca and still only 24… but like Coutinho & Griezmann, Messi just casts such a long shadow over that club

There's also the fact, from an FPL perspective I don't really care if he's not as good overall as long as he starts well.

Di Maria was a flop who had three double-digit hauls in his first 4 games. Pukki had 5 in his first 5, before finishing the season with 11. James was pretty good in his first 4 games for Everton.

In Chelsea, Morata had 6 goals in his first 6. Werner had 4 in 8 (plus a couple of assists). Heck even Higuain got 2 on his home debut.

Generally MU signings tend to start well before tapering off. Van de Beek scored on first game. Bruno, Dan James, Lukaku, Ibrahimovic etc all had strong starts. Mkhi also had goals early on, tho Jose took like 1.5 months to give him a start.

Man Utd have received the following premier league penalties the last 3x seasons:

      20/21 - 11
      19/20 - 11
      18/12 - 12

With Sancho on board, Rashford/Greenwood a year older, Cavani properly settled, Martial back fit - This season prediction?

      A. Less than 5
      B. 5-10

There's so much value in the £4.5m defenders. Unlike £4.5m mids and forward they are viable options that you can play each week. And as the great Mark Sutherns said on his meet the manager video, this game is all about finding value.

The only way I can see to get 3 premiums like Salah, Bruno and KDB (essential for the gameweek 2 captaincy) in a reasonably strong team is to go 5 x £4.5m at the back.

Anyone thinking about taking the plunge and going all cheap at the back? I'm tempted but it's scary going without Trent.

You have to be brave to own KDB in FPL nowadays

If it isn’t the 10-20% chance of Pep benching him, it’s the 10-20% chance of him getting injured… if it isn’t the chance of him getting injured it’s the chance of him refusing to take penalties or messing up sitter after sitter in an advanced role, or just blanking

Was a genuine nightmare last season

Nah, just spending 0.5 or 1m extra gives a much better quality defense. Granted they are good enablers and will be required as and when required but a quality defense goes a long way, point wise as well as transfer wise.

      5. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

You'd be using up too many transfers hopping on and off fixture-chasing defenders. I'd say you'd want 2 %m+ set-n-forget defenders, and 3 to rotate/drop id loss of form.
Therefore, to me, 2 premium 10m+ assets should be sufficient. Better to use transfers upside chase 12m midfielders than faffing around with cheap defenders.

Yep. Fofana a good example of being undervalued. I would guess his celling is around 130pts for the season whereas TAA could be well over 200. Even Coufal/Cresswell can achieve 150pts plus and are more likely to get attacking returns that make more attractive in hard fixtures.

      6. Eze Really?
        • 9 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

There are good 4.5 options for sure but the only time holding premiums are viable is if they are captainable. TAA for instance, is likely to score higher than any 7.5 in the game. The spread of wealth is the only way, in my experience, to do well in this game. A 12 mil player points per million is usually poor and quite often, only pays off as a captain. Having 3 premiums means 2 are not captains and invariably the captain you choose is not always the one that performs the best.
There are good defensive options this season, right across the cost variables. Stick to 2 premiums IMO.
        Sorry for the mouthful.

      7. The Mighty Hippo
        • 7 Years

I actually think the opposite applies, my draft defense is TAA / Creswell / Shaw and I think they'll return a significantly better value than a rotation of 4.5 options. There is plenty of value in the mid-priced forwards and midfielders to allow a balanced squad to be build without needing to invest in three premium players.

Loving the look of Lamptey & Ayling personally - think they’re comfortably the pick of the litter (Attacking threat and statistically stingy defences)

Fofana is also too cheap tbf

As are both Burnley fullbacks in Lowton & Taylor

I've currently got Fofana and Lamptey to rotate, after deciding to delay bringing in a Leeds defender. However, I'm minded to ditch Lamptey for White when and if he moves and nails a place at Arsenal - they've got great fixtures for the first 11 GWs providing you can cover GWs 2 and 3.

White yeah he’s right at the top of the list too

Personally I thing to use the crop of 4.5’s to afford TAA & Digne

Don’t want more than 3 4.5’s maximum as there’s too much value in the 5-5.5 bracket (and the FPL monstrosity that is TAA obvs!)

I’ve done it! 3rd draft, this is the one!

      4.5 keeper
      Shaw | Coufal | Tierney
      Salah | Bruno | Raphinha | Buendia | Cantwell
      Kane | 7.5 str

      4.0 keeper | 4.5 def | 4.0 def | 4.5 str

7.5 str could be Antonio, Wilson or Iheanacho.
So keen to keep that price in my team for flexibility, similarly with Raph/Buendia and the 6.5 mids

I had the original Football Manager game on the Atari ST. 1982 or 83 I think. The current game called 'Football Manager' is probably the best football manager game available and once the 2022 version of the game is released, the 2021 version will probably be available for free. I got the 2020 version for nothing from Epic Games last year.

No good to me. I'm happy to pay full price but to no avail as Steam refuse to activate the game due to me living in a 'wrong' country 🙁

Captain Kane over Sterling? Captain Kane over Sterling.

Thinking Shaw myself - set pieces, assist potential from crosses, clean sheet

          I got Stones, no Shaw.

Wow Ayling’s ICT index last season yet got no goals/assists!

      Maybe he’s the new Dallas!

I owned him over Dallas most of the season. Cost me a top 10k

Mhm. Something fun, 5-2-3. (0.5 itb)

      Sanchez
      TAA Dias Shaw Cresswell Digne
      Salah Bruno
      DCL Iheanacho Watkins

      Bench: 4.0 gk, 4.5 mid, 4.5 mid, 4.5 mid.

Dias can be VVD, Stones, Cancelo, Chilwell.

I really like it. But what 4.5 mids will you have to provide you with some bench? I can’t see anyone at that price apart from bissouma (who’s only a 2 point merchant anyway)

Bissouma, Gilmour, Brownhill, Allan, Douglas Luiz.

It looks nice but you have to remember the midfielders are consistently the biggest points scorers every season

Thoughts on this FPL Draft, feel it’s got a lot of flexibility, could do 5-3-2, 5-4-1, 4-4-2:

      Sanchez (Foster)
      TAA Robertson Digne Shaw Coufal
      Salah Bruno Buendia (Raphinha Gilmour)
      DCL Toney (4.5m)

Far too much budget in defence IMO.

I really hope that Kane doesn't go to City;. I don't want to have him in my team at the start of the season, but if the transfer happens and everyone gets him then I'd probably feel obliged to as well. I hate making selections just to cover risk!!

        Same

Want him to stay at Spurs

If he goes to city he’s a non negotiable lock in to everyone’s team, and auto captain and it just becomes a 10 man game
