Site Features

Have your say and vote to shape Scout’s FPL editorial content in 2021/22

Fantasy Football Scout would be nothing without its site users and subscribers.

From the small group of like-minded souls who banded together to visit the embryonic website back in 2007 to the millions of visits we now get every season, the FFS community has been there all the way from the beginning and is still front and centre of our thoughts.

The post/pre-season lull has given us the opportunity to assess our editorial output in a bid to make it all the more relevant to you, the readers, for the upcoming campaign.

As part of that drive for continued improvement, our new Members Strategy Manager, Az Phillips, recently carried out our first major survey – the results of which have been hugely helpful in reassessing our approach.

We’re going a step further with this latest mini-appraisal.

While Az’s survey was predominantly focused on existing content, here we switch focus to the features of yesteryear.

Many much-loved (and unloved) article types have come and gone for various reasons over the last 14 years but it has invariably been the editorial teams who have made the decisions to cull or continue a series.

So we’d love to hear your thoughts on everything from Line-up Lessons to the Digest, to see if there is any clamour for their return.

There are nine dormant article strands we’ve picked out from the past – but if there are any that we’ve unfairly overlooked, please do mention them in the usual comments section below.

And feel free to suggest any new ideas that you’d like to see us consider.

For the uninitiated, a guide to each feature is below the survey.

We can’t promise that the majority of them will be making a comeback or even returning in their original guise but we’re keen to hear your thoughts!

HOW MUCH WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE THE FOLLOWING FEATURES RETURN?

Going for Arsenal players early on? They have some bargain picks when their fixtures become good but gwks 2 and 3 are hard. Also Cavani will rotate with Martial and having Mbuemo on the bench instead of a 4.5, as well as Henderson, seems like a waste of money that can be better spent improving your first 11.

      Only 1 captain option.

I link this team. Havertz can be a good captain if not Salah. Then you have Mbuemo to come on, if Havertz doesn't play. If Cavani starts the season which I think he will what with no European games for Man Utd for the first few, then he'd be a good pick. I'd punt for Nacho instead of Richarlison though.

Why do you reckon Havertz can be a good captain? I’m not sure he’ll even start regularly

He started 7 of Tuchel’s 19 league games in charge…

Honestly it's more in hope than expectation. I think Chelsea play best with Havertz up top on his own (false9) and Mount and Werner behind.
Ziyech and Pulisic complicate things though.
I'm hoping for stability but expecting more rotation similar to last season. What makes it worse is that Tuchel likes to bring players on for 20 minute cameos.

I think I've talked myself out of it.

          Do Havertz for Grealish instead!

Norwich 14 clean sheets in 23 home games

GW1 adrenaline spurring then on, it'll be a full on 11-at-back all hands to the pumps performance for them id imagine

Liverpool may find it tough to score more than 1 or 2, especially if they turn up thinking they've already won

Utd-Leeds at Old Trafford was bonkers last time (6-2),plus the Sancho euphoria stirring things up, could see a lot of goals there, even though Leeds have been solid at Elland Road in the latter part of the season

Bruno (c) GW1 definitely on my radar

    Thoughts on my Euro team?

    Simon, Pickford
    Spinazzola, Alba, Meunier, Shaw, Maguire
    Sterling, Torres, Sarabia, Shaqiri, Damsgaard
    Kane, Morata, Schick

    Looking at these moves:

    Schick -> Immobile
    Shaqiri -> Insigne
    Damsgaard -> 5.1m fodder
    Meunier -> Stones
Spinazzola -> Toloi (if he starts)

    1. rh6462
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 9 months ago

Do you have a reason for thinking Toloi might start? Di Lorenzo has been chosen over him repeatedly, Florenzi getting back near to fitness so not sure why Toloi would come in?

Can you stretch to Emerson? Italy attack much more via left full-back than right, it's not just Spinazzola individually, it's the tactic.

      1. Paqueta Rice
        • 3 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

Hasn’t Emerson played even less than Toloi though? I am just being more hopeful than anything as he is cheaper really but we will get the line ups regardless.

        1. rh6462
          • 5 Years
          2 years, 9 months ago

He has, but Spinazzola injury means there's only one LB in the squad, Emerson. It's hard to imagine how Emerson doesn't play now really.

But then I'm supporting Italy so going to go big on Italian defence, whether that's logical or not is another question!

          1. Paqueta Rice
            • 3 Years
            2 years, 9 months ago

Yeah, I left out their defence other than Spinazzola on my WC last round as I couldn’t call that game. Now I’m going to use my ft to get in Italy players. I may end up using one position in my squad as fodder in order to afford what I want.

    Sanchez 4
    TAA Digne Stones (White/Fofana)
    Salah Bruno Kai Rafa 4.5
    Nacho Tammy Welbeck

Focuses on finding value amongst the cheaper strikers to facilitate a great defence + that 8-8.5 mid slot.
Two solid bench options as well, which rotate well to provide a valid first sub to navigate a bit of Pep/Tuchel decide to play roulette.
Tammy is assuming he gets his move, but could also be Toney.

I think the feeling was that the Preamble was so associated with Mark's name that any successor wouldn't be so well received, and that is why the Breakfast Club came into being.

Would you like to see Preambles by another writer, or perhaps by a number of other writers in rotation?

Multiple writers actually sounds good, by following this route we might actually find someone who can express in similar way.

      - I like the idea of rotating the honours on the pre-amble, perhaps one for the pro-pundits…
      - Agree that Big Numbers should be a weekly article
      - Perhaps a weekly article to tie in with the weekly update of the Watchlist providing more details/rationale for selecting those players
      - Other feedback not related to editorial content but video content:
      1) Try and schedule the odd Scoutcast with the triumvirate of Mark, Granville and Joe
      2) Would be good to see more Luke also on the Scoutcast
      3) More guest appearances from previous winners such as Simon March etc
      4) More iterations of Meet the Manager
      5) More video content restricted to members only which delves more into the member zone and stats tables.

Strategy articles that take a long term view. How do clean sheets change over the season etc.

A bit late to the party but on a lighter note I’d love a narrative series based around a team controlled by the fantasy scout community.

Maybe a couple of decisions presented to be voted on each week. See how well or badly the team does based on collective knowledge.

As an expansion of the rough with the smooth it would be great to have an article capturing a summary of highs and lows. Maybe with a mental health message around just a game. This could be community sourced or extracts from the wider team of regular contributors to show that everyone has good and bad weeks.

I'm not sure if this is relevant to what the article is asking for, bit I've always wished the "predicted line up" section was improved by giving better explanation as to why they thought one player would start over another. It's often hit and miss as to if there's an explanation to them. I'm not saying the predicted line ups have to be right, that would be like choosing the lottery numbers, just an insight as to why, if ones available.

That's interesting! Appreciate the feedback. I thought I went overboard on the blurb that accompanies the predicted line-ups, if anything, too waffly. Generally speaking, my approach is if the player in question isn't mentioned in the copy, he's generally a safe starter. It's mostly the 50/50 calls that get the attention.

The feature I’ve always wanted on the predicted line up is an accuracy rating for teams or even players. How often does a given player start when he is predicted to / how many out of 11 are right. Gives an indication of a manager’s predictability. Maybe measure over season to date or last 20 matches so there is something meaningful at the start of the season

I know the advantages of a captaincy pick and the probable need to own a big hitter.
However when you think of Raphina and Harrison likely to exceed 150pts in a season, they are likely to outscore Salah, Bruno etc and the 2 combined are the same cost.
So is there a real need to have 2+ big hitters when money can be spread across the board?

    1. Moxon
      • 9 Years

I think 2 big hitters is the best balance. Need we forget that Salah once hit a 300 point season by himself. Having Bruno and Salah will bring you consistent points and the most dependable captaincy options you can ask for.

Nope but we move our players around. Big hitters are there for a reason but should not limit other choices.

It's very easy to have both and not jeopardize the rest of the squad. Then you can use your transfers elsewhere to jump on bandwagons and form players when they emerge.

It is not a case of justification. That will come out in the wash We have +-85 mil to spend that is not on the bench. I can guarantee, outside of the captaincy, if you have the best average points per million over 38 weeks you have a good chance of winning. There will be time when 2 big hitters are viable but as a general rule it does not have to be.

Not talking about a captain to replace a big hitter. I am saying the only time a big hitter has value is when you captain him.

For most managers, the issue is that they aren't willing to expose themselves to the magnitude of potential losses that they could see if a player like Bruno is 150%+ EO and they don't even own him. If Bruno is 150% EO in a certain week, then owning but not captaining means the potential loss is only 1/3 as large (50% of the points he scores instead of 150%). Even a manager as aggressive as Luke (d1sable) has suggested he typically prefers to cover the standout captain by owning him, while choosing a very low EO differential captain as sword pick. This would suggest a big hitter has value even if you captain him rarely.

If you're really serious about ignoring EO altogether, then go for it -- but don't expect a lot of encouragement from this forum.

Risk management? Really. Effective ownership is telling you it is a common choice or not. I am also not saying don't go for the common choice. I am an actuary and I could give you a whole long list of why covering effective ownership is not what people make it out to be. If we want to sit in the "Tweet pack", yes it is the way to go. But remember, whatever the high owned player is, if you don't own and captain him your money is spent in other areas. It is worthwhile to check the real cost of not being the passenger on the train but the driver.
EG: Bruno 10 points 150% EO a big downside of 20 points from the majority. I captain Salah he gets 7 points. I have gained 7 points on the majority. Then with the spare cash I get I have 2 good points scorers getting 6 each that others could not afford, I am catching up quickly. Not to mention my captain choice could score better.
I tell you now, effective ownership cannot be quantified over 1 player but your whole team.

You may note I have been on this site for 7 years and it is available for opinion. My job is not to change minds, it is a forum to offer opinion.
Excuse me if I got shirty but your line of "don't expect any encouragement from this forum" is a bit high and mighty.

haha I know what EG means just this one doesn't make sense as it ignores a lot of other factors.

Separately I think something that no one else has mentioned is that even if you optimised for PPM you'd still have excess budget and therefore you'd get more total points getting a big hitter. E.g. let's assume an ave. spend of 6m in Defence + keepers, Mids @ 8m and attackers @ 8m (with a lighter bench), you'd still have 3-4m left over... so it'd make sense upgraded an attacker or mid to a £12m player

Just did the numbers on this for last season. If you chose the best players for PPM at the start of the season (impossible, but let's go with it) it would cost: 4.5, 4.5; 4.5, 5, 4.5, 5.5, 4.5; 5.5, 5.5, 9, 6.5, 5.5, 6, 7, 6.5.. .which comes out at £84.5m and that's without worrying about a cheap bench. Let's say we swap a 5.5 mid for Salah, we still have £9m to spend

12 players at 7 mil = 84 mil. (The rest on the bench) now start from this end and get optimum value.
                      Bloody obvious you need balance.

Obviously getting 15 4.5 mil keepers and defenders is an optimum you cannot realize. I think you know by now the point I am making.

In the list of prices I posted above the semicolons demarcate position and you still have £9mn to spend after optimising for PPM and including Salah. It would also have required guessing Coufal, Soucek, Cresswell, Bamford, Martinez etc to have a good season... which I think we both agree is harder than predicting Bruno will! So I think it's 2 things: safety of the premiums and optimising for PPM only get's you so far towards getting the most points.

On paper it may work but we cant captain Salah/Bruno every week. Fixtures/Form/Rest etc.

Likes of Harrison/Raphinha are unlikely to be consistent or score big plus we wont own them for 38 GWs. They are decent fillers for certain period but not reliable enough for anything more.

2 premium makes sense, anything more is likely to disturb the balance of team.

Good thing is we can own all 4 at the same time! 😉

I've currently got one premium - Salah. I'd say other than v City and maybe Chelsea, he is perma-captain material. The thing about big hitters is they won't haul every week, but they CAN haul any gameweek.
I'm not saying I'll keep Raph and Harrison for 38 gameweeks, but I have put them in my draft with long-term intentions in contrast to Brighton and possibly Villa assets who have good early fixtures but may not stay the course.
If Salah were to go off the boil, it's an east 1FT to switch him for Bruno, KDB or anyone else.

But Bamford was Mister Consistency last season - 28 returns was just phenomenal, and with penalties, and Leeds’ 62-goal attack…

He’s going to be gunning for 30 returns again this year, there’s absolutely nothing special to stop him scoring or assisting at Old Trafford GW1

I am on the same line here. People want Raphinha with the same fixtures, but at the same time ignoring Bamford? Ok, price difference and excellent value, 6.5 to 8.0, but it's difficult for me to expect for Raphinha to do well while Bamford doesn't. Also, Everton have Brighton and Leeds away in the first three, and I can't say those are prime fixtures.

DCL's 5 goals in his last 27 games was just terrifying too

And who knows how Rafa impacts him - positively, negatively, not at all??

I sometimes wonder if West Brom hadn't gotten the man sent off early in GW2 last year (allowing him to hattrick) how would his season have went

I think his overall play is so rudimental, yet so effective, he's so dominant in jumping and heading, so I believe they'll continue to leave it on the plate for him. I think there'll be very little impact, if any.

We might see more of Rodrigo.
Raphinha and Harrison tempting along with Meslier and a defender after the first 5 GWs.

Bear in mind he will probably continue to be subbed of before 60 sometimes

Anyone managed to squeeze KDB, Bruno and Salah in their team?

    And is it worth it?

KDB got one goal from play in the first half of the season

And played 8 games blanking in 5 of them in the second half of the season

Apparently he also played vs Italy with a torn ankle ligament

He’s to be treaded around very, very carefully imo

Not really interested in that combo tbh but I have tried Kane, Salah, Bruno.

Not for me - I'd rather Upside Chase on those guys.
If the Euros keep going the way they're going, I can see a Sterling-Kane at City combo being extremely tempting.

Anyone still playing euro FF? Just wondering what transfer people are making for the semi's, who people believe is essential etc

Have to play till the final whistle 😉

I guess England and Italy players will be popular targets for this week. Many of us are likely to have similar teams due to 5FTs, so captaincy is going to be crucial.

On a Wildcard so splitting evenly between the 4 teams.
3 Spain, 3 Italy, 4 DK, 5 England (Dk and Eng keepers)
So guareenteed 7 finalists (inc. A keeper)

Hard to say who is essential as not alot of choice.
Spain strikers and midfielders hard to call.
Denmark also hard to know which striker is best.

      Kane and Immobile up front
      Sterling, Insigne midfield
Alba, Maele, And a mix of England/Italy in defence.

theres a whopping £20 amazon voucher up for grabs in my work league to keep my attention!

my 5 transfers will probably be,

      Shaw
      Maguire
      Kane
      F Torres
      Immobile,

      Team would be -
      Morata - Kane - immobile
      Sterling - Insigne - Hojbjerg - Berardi - F Torres
      Azp - Stones - Shaw - Maguire - Maehle
      Simon - (Stek)

Best fpl option- and any better option at 6/6.5/7m?

    A Dias Sarr/6 m
    B Digne Saka/6.5 ( not Raphinha)
    C Coufal Maddison /7 m

I like A but maybe Cancelo Sarr?

Your best bets are Harrison in A and Buendia in B

Thanks. Even if doubling up Raphinha and Harrison or Buendia and Watkins?

Well, not ideal but looking at isolation, Harrison and Buendia (besides Sarr and Raphinha) are the best remaining assets in those price brackets who can bring you regular points, at least I view them that way

Assuming Sancho comes at 9.5, how does this look?

    Pickford
    Robbo, Coufal, Lamptey
    Salah, KDB, Sancho, Harrison
    Watkins, Toney, Antonio

    Foster, Ayling, Gilmour, 4.0

    How good is Toney?

Brilliant in the Championship, untested in the Premier League.

Ollie Watkins in a worse team but with penalties
