How to play FanTeam’s £1m season-long Premier League Fantasy game

Sponsored by FanTeam

And it’s live! FanTeam’s £1m season-long Premier League Fantasy game – think a paid-entry FPL with huge cash prizes – has relaunched for the new season.

That’s right: there is a guaranteed prize pool of one million pounds in this Fantasy tournament, with £200,000 going to the winner.

There is no catch here, only a €20 entry fee – a payment you’ll make up just by finishing in the top 5,000.

There is also a £25,000 prize pool for the 10 users who achieve the highest Gameweek scores, with £10,000 set aside for exclusive freerolls.

Given that a maximum of 60,000 entries are permitted (that’s less than 1% of the competition you’ll face in Fantasy Premier League each year), the odds are favourable for those who know their stuff.

The first early-bird offer has already gone but teams 501-1,000 who sign up get a FREE £9/€10 ticket to FanTeam’s Euro 2020 final Fantasy contest, which has a guaranteed prize pool of €50,000.

INITIAL PRICE LIST REACTION

The cheaper availability of Sadio Mane (£10.0m) and Roberto Firmino (£7.5m) really stands out, for those Fantasy managers looking for a cut-price alternative to Mohamed Salah (£12.5m).

The Egyptian comes in as the game’s most expensive player, half a million pricier than both Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) and Harry Kane (£12.0m).

A number of the other premium picks are available at more appealing prices than they are in FPL, with Raheem Sterling (£10.0m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.5m) among those marked down.

The likes of Lucas Digne (£5.5m), Wesley Fofana (£4.5m) and Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) are all priced up in the same generous brackets they are in FPL.

We’ll be back over the coming weeks with a series of articles on FanTeam’s million-pound cash game, delving deeper into the player prices in each position.

WHAT ARE THE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES TO FPL?

Here’s the great news: anyone with any sort of Fantasy Premier League experience should be able to pick up FanTeam’s game without issue.

The rules, scoring and prices are very similar; click the above image for a full breakdown.

It’s essentially FPL but with huge cash prizes. Given that paid entry mini-leagues are now strongly discouraged by the Premier League, the FanTeam game offers Fantasy managers a legitimate opportunity to make money from their management expertise.

As in FPL, managers build a squad of 15 players that includes two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders and three forwards.

A maximum of three players from a single Premier League team can be selected, with the budget for the initial squad set at 100.0m.

A starting XI is then selected for each Gameweek from that squad of 15.

One free transfer is allowed each Gameweek, with each additional transfer costing minus four points. Managers can roll a Gameweek transfer forward but can never have more than two free transfers in their locker.

FanTeam managers have two Wildcards to use, one for each half of the season. Unlimited free transfers can be used when the Wildcard is deployed and also ahead of Gameweek 1.

A captain (and vice-captain) has to be nominated every week; that player will score double points if they are handed the armband.

All sound very familiar? That’s because the two games are largely the same – although there are a handful of differences to watch out for.

KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FANTEAM AND FPL
  • Player prices can rise and fall based on form and in-game transfer movement but, unlike in FPL, a player’s ‘sell price’ is the same as their ‘buy price’.
  • Other than the two aforementioned Wildcards, there aren’t any chips in FanTeam.
  • More than one team is allowed per person, with each entry costing £20.

HOW DO PLAYERS SCORE POINTS?

Seasoned FPL managers should have no problem in adjusting to FanTeam and running a squad with its familiar scoring system, which is shown above.

KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FANTEAM AND FPL
  • There is no Bonus Points System, which is replaced by plus/minus points (+0.3/-0.3) if a team is winning/losing during the period a player is on the pitch.
  • Goalkeepers get 0.5 points for every save made, unlike the one point awarded in FPL for increments of three stops.
  • Committing a foul that leads to a free-kick goal or converted penalty is penalised by minus two points.
  • Midfielders and forwards get an extra point for completing the full match.
  • Shots on target that don’t end up as goals are rewarded (+0.4 for midfielders and forwards, +0.6 for defenders)

Totally agree anybody with a good knowledge of FPL by that I mean any manager who generally finishes within the top 100 thousand of FPL should be in the cash.

I love it, actually prefer it to FPL. It's not that hard to make modest returns if you have reasonable FPL knowledge I find. Hard to compete with the pros for serious dough though as they all have 20 teams, I can't be bothered with that kind of maintenance.

    Afternoon all,
Thinking about going in with this as my Euro FF team for the semi's (after all 5 transfers used).
Any obvious changes people would consider?

    Simon, Donna
    Alba, Bonucci, Shaw, Maguire, Maehle
    Insigne, Beradi, Sarabia, Sterling, Damsgaard
    Kane, Immoble, Morata

Hey guys, I've decided to take a slight step back this season, and set up my team for the slightly longer term.
    How does this look?
    Sanchez foster
    TAA shaw coufal ayling lamptey
    Salah KDB saka raphinha bissouma
    Antonio nacho watkins

I'm happy to go without Bruno for now, kdb can always be swapped out.
The three forwards can be swapped for any cheaper value forwards that show themselves.
Maybe too much money spread in defence?

Sarr really is lightning isn't he? I've also seen him take some of the penalties he wins. I think I'll start the season with the Watford talisman unless West Ham manage to somehow entice Lingard away from his new potential contract at United.

Hardly "a must". But at 6.0 he looks like a decent option tbh. Perhaps too much hype over him makes him some kind of price risk (even though his ownership is "only" 8% atm.

This term is used way too often. I can't see why anyone from any fanbase would call him 'A Legend'. Cantona for United, yes, even Beckham, Keane, Giggs, possibly Ronaldo; Spurs Kane, Lineker, even Klinsmann; West Ham, Noble etc. Carrick? Can't see why.

Yeah Honestly if Kane signed for City it would feel like a monopoly

Him being injured would be the only real hope as he’d have a very realistic chance of a 40 goal season with city’s midfield chance creation

He’d probably get 10 penalties as a baseline

Grealish doesn’t add anywhere near as much to City as Kane would

I think Chelsea will be very close to challenging them this season.

Not sure about Chelsea under Tuchel at all tbh

They surfed a big new manager bounce, but he has a job on his hands to try keep that squad motivated and happy I think

There are too many big names and big egos who won't be getting regular minutes and the champions league win doesnt exactly help the hunger side of things either, could see them switching off a bit & putting the feet up

The league defeats to west brom, Villa, arsenal, the draws with wolves Southampton, Brighton, utd, Leeds... The Cup defeat to Leicester... All under Tuchel and they looked dire in them all

Came in mid-season with a team conceding many many goals and playing awful football. Sat in 8th I believe and gets them top, an FA Cup Final and a Champions league win and you’re doubting that?! Crazy.

Taking half a billion pounds worth of talent from 8th to 4th…anyways, look it would be silly to say he did a bad job, because he obviously didn’t

But I wasn’t as impressed by them as many seemed to be - they had the capacity to play absolutely shite under Tuchel at times (West Brom, Villa, Arsenal, Southampton, Wolves, Leeds, Utd) as bad if not worse than under Frank and that can easily creep back in again over the long hard slog of a 38-league game season

There are very fine margins in sport sometimes & I think Tuchel definitely found himself marginally on the right side to win the champions league

Jury definitely out for me, I wouldn’t trust that group of Chelsea players not to dump him under the bus if/when the sticky patches come again

They're generally all Pep's men who weren't brought in under any false pretences which helps - much more stability & consistency of management at man City

They're also guaranteed to be at least second every year, and probably champions

Whereas at Chelsea, they've a squad put together under Hiddink, Conte, Sarri, Lampard, and now Tuchel since Pep joined Man City

And it hasn't even all been plain sailing at man City either too be fair - Sane wasnt happy, neither was otamendi, Sterling isn't now, Bilva is moaning, Aguero had to go, Stones was close to gone over the summer, Laporte & even Ake will soon start agitating if they don't start regularly

But it all just feels much more short term and reactive at Chelsea, like a house of cards that could crumble at any second

Totally agree, it is a monopoly. Chelsea could have a monopoly too with Haaland. Can't see anyone keeping up with 'The Moneyed Three' this season.

I hope City don't get Kane as it'll kill the league. They must be paying their players backhanders to get that talent sit on the bench and not moan.

They all play though, that's why there's so much rotation. They are very well paid and are winning trophies. Yes they might not get all the minutes they want but, they are very well paid and are winning trophies.

To be honest, I think he is rather replacement for D. Silva and would play in the middle, alongside KDB. The competition shouldn't be that tough there, but there's also Gundogan (and Foden but imho Pep doesn't see him there). It's wait and see for me but also his ownership will probably be very high, so it's quite risky.

After the Euros the transfer market is going to kick into full gear and really going to shake things up.

Potential moves of interest (if you believe the press)

    Chelsea: Haaland
    City: Grealish, Kane
    Utd: Sancho
    Arsenal: White
    Sp*rs: Ings/Jimmy/Vlahovic (if Kane departs)
    Villa: Abraham, JWP, ESR
    West Ham: Abraham, Toney

    Haaland/Kane transfers are template busters
Abraham and the Kane replacement are definetly of interest

The fact that he is available for £70m next year (contract clause) but £150m odd now will just come down to whether there is some middle ground that can be achieved in the negotations. And if City land Kane, that would probably force their hand, and vice versa.

Real Madrids rumoured plan is to get Mbappe this summer and Haaland next, so if a prem club wants him they probably need to cough up now.

Wouldn't change mine much. Teirney to White maybe, with 0.5 ITB used to upgrade 4.0m defender. Already got Toney. Would want to see how Jimmy performs on his return, and how Haaland settles before going there. Prefer Bruno and Salah, over Kane or Sancho.

Kane @ City will get 30+ goals a season. Unlike Aguero he isnt made of glass and City are even stronger now then they were then, he could easily Messi/Ronaldo type numbers to be honest. Auto captain, auto template.

Assuming all places get taken. They haven't previously leaving you a good chance if you are any good/lucky but it is gambling at the end of the day so you should only play if you can afford to lose.

Don't be ridiculous. I'm literally explaining that your base math is wrong as you are assuming all places will fill. Which they might, however, both last years fpl game and the euro game have had much fewer entries than available increasing your chance of being in the money.

Last season there were only about 30K signed up, so double those odds. With a bit of knowledge finishing in the top 15% isn't that hard. I had a team in the PL game, CL group stage and CL knock-out last season and the CL group stage was the only one I didn't make a profit on. I have two teams in the Euros game and as it stands, I'm making a profit on both.

Problem with that maths is how many are sticking £20 in an playing “casually”

I consider it to be more like playing FPL against only a selection of the best 100,000 players.

Well I only finished about 300K last year in FPL but made money in Fanteam. I did finish 500 in FPL the year before, maybe I directed too much energy into Fanteam this year ha.

But also bear in mind that lots of people put 20 teams in at the start to play the numbers and try out different combos, then when some of their teams drop off half way through the year or whatever they don't put much energy into them there after. That will account for a lot of the numbers and in effect become casual accounts. I will play 1 or 2 teams and try hard with them and be confident that I can finish in the top 10-15%.

Anybody else not convinced Salah is worth his price this season?

He only got 6 assists and 21 bonus points last season. Now obviously not every season will be the same but he strikes me as needing two returns in a match to get any sort of bonus.

The season before he got 18 bonus points.

In comparison Kane got 40 bonus points last season. Bruno got 36. Luke Shaw has him beat on 22. TAA has him beat on 26.

He was like the joint 10th highest player in regards to bonus points last season.

We have a player like Son who is two and a half million less who posted similar figures to Salah last season.

For me Bruno is essential. The high amount of penalties Utd get means all he needs is a penalty and because he is good with bonus, guaranteed a 10 plus score. That is obviously doubled if he is captain.

Likewise a full fit and on form KDB would be similar. All he needs is a return to guarantee the bonus, hence more points.

Unless Salah is scoring hat tricks back to back then he isn't worth that money and I know it's early in pre season but every team I see on here have him in it and i just can't see it being worth it with a load of 2's, 7's, 8's and the odd 10+ which you could feasably get from the likes of Grealish, Foden, Son, KDB etc

I like your thinking, the issue with Salah is, that he's a very consistent goalscorer (thus captaincy option) and even when he's playing rubbish he can notch up a penalty and assist. I do think you are kind of right that too many are scared to move off the template and overlook other ways they can score the same or more points with a riskier path. Bruno might be essential but the problem is that we don't know how Sancho will affect his attacking output and he ended the season quite badly (+ a poor Euros).

      • 14 Years

His stats are great, he is reliable and consistent, and obnoxiously selfish.

Projections put him on 240 ish, Bruno/Kane around the 200 mark.
Looking at the XG stats seem about right to me.

All of the premiums are worth it when you get to double their score.
Think about it the other way - its like having 2*6.25m players, each scoring 240 over a season.

Whats not worth it is having 3 of them. Most settle on 2 to give themselves captaincy options, although thats over-rated to be fair.

          Yeah that’s the big thing

We actually get 12 players each week

Makes sense to have good options to turn two of those 12 slots into 25.0/24.0’s worth - over the longer term it usually tells

Unless you’re some sort of god-like clairvoyant who can pick & choose when single digit price assets are going to double return each week

I get your point, but from the start of the season Salah and Liverpool looks good to me. Not too many involved in the Euro's. Most of their starters had proper vacation and therefore will have a good preseason. I have wildcarded early in all of my seasons playing this game, and I would be fooling myself to think I can last longer than the international break after GW3 😛
If Salah and Liverpool looks off I will simply wildcard him out 😀

If Kane goes to City I don’t think Salah will be in as many teams

But as long as Kane’s still at Spurs, there’s not really massive budgetary pressure to go without him though

I don’t fancy going near KDB after his 1 goal from play in the first half of the season, and 5 blanks in 8 appearances in the second half of the season (no city atttackers interest me unless we get an injury bottlenckto signpost who is getting an extended period of starts - same with Chelsea)

Sadio Mané doesn’t have penalties… Kane at Spurs to me just doesn’t stand out as having a massive chance of exceeding Salah… Son is absolutely brilliant, but again is at that circus of a club, and I owned him all of last season at 9.0 - the 10.0 is a bit of an increase… plus not sure he can automatically pop in the same amount of worldies again (he was waaaay over his XG from memory, but then again he’s that good)

Rashford was frustrating as hell, as was Vardy for the last half season…

You can only field 11 players at the end of the day after all… To be honest Bruno & Salah are nearly the only gig in premium town at the minute, and with Raphinia’s price, TAA, and the sheer amount of mid price strikers & defenders… as well as Buendia, Sarr, Harrison, Grealish… it all falls neatly into place with Bruno/Salah at the minute

Unless & until Kane signs for city that is

That's my thinking too. I'm perfectly comfortable with Salah as my premium start and expect him to be close to perma-captain. However, if Kane goes to City I think that rather than rip up my draft, I might have to simply transfer what I said about Salah to Kane and go without Salah.

Or possibly even just bite the bullet, get all three plus TAA & play 4-4-2 with a weaker supporting cast

Bruno, Kane & Salah would all be on pens for the likely top 3 - they would be nice relaxing guys to just leave there each week

A relatively low stress FPL season wouldn’t go amiss 🙂

It would have to be 4-4-2 with a cast of real cheapies, especially if you have TAA in defence.

But if you’re capping Kane every week if he’s at City then do you really need Bruno and Salah too, since you’re not capping them now?

It almost feels like if he did go to City the eventual FPL winner next season will be the guy who doesn’t get Kane and spreads the wealth instead.

Despite the fact that Kane and Bruno might get more penalties than Salah in a season, Salah can outscore them comfortably.

But should he get equal number of penalties, those bonus numbers will be neutralized, IMO.

I don't think there is a need to overthink things. Proven and reliable points scorer, stats are also there. Even with a disastrous couple of months last season, he managed to get 230 points or so. Yeah, he doesn't get many bonus points in comparison to some players, but as long as he scores points, I don't care how he does it.

I see Kane at the start of the season, whether he moves to City or not, as a wait & see. I'm purely trying to be pragmatic with 12.5m over gw1-3 rather than moot against popular opinion

The move to City will involve some major changes. He needs a pre-season. If he stays at Spurs (I have no doubt he's a professional) is it something that will undermine performance? Either way, I doubt he'll start gw1. Kane ended the season with an ankle injury and started the euro's looking off the pace. Although he's performed well; I've seen him sharper and in better form.

Speculative I know, but do I want a 12.5m player on my bench to kick-off a new season?

    In FanTeam

Mane at 10m (2.5 less than Salah)
Firming at 7.5m (in line with Watkins etc)

    Are they underpriced in FanTeam?
