Can Everton’s FPL assets have a strong start under new boss Rafael Benitez?

Rafael Benitez’s return to the Premier League has caused quite the stir on Merseyside.

The former Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Napoli coach is back in Liverpool after an 11-year absence but has switched allegiance to the blue half of the city, following half a dozen years in charge at Anfield.

The 61-year-old Spaniard’s fourth stint at the helm of an English club has divided opinion in the north-west but what does it mean for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers?

Our Scout Report takes a closer look.

THE HISTORY

Benitez graduated through the Real Madrid coaching set-up to become the club’s B-side manager in 1993 but his first stabs at taking the hotseat elsewhere were ill-fated, with spells at Real Valladolid and Osasuna ending in ignominy.

Promotions with Extremadura and Tenerife preceded his surprise appointment at Valencia, the club with which his reputation was effectively built.

Benitez won two La Liga titles and a UEFA Cup with the Spanish outfit before departing for Liverpool, with whom he sealed a memorable Champions League success in his first year in charge.

Five consecutive top-five finishes with the Reds didn’t translate into any domestic trophyware beyond a 2006 FA Cup, with his exit and subsequent short stints at Inter, Chelsea and Real Madrid perhaps hinting that his powers were waning – although there was a Europa League success at the Blues and his win percentage never dipped below 48% from 2000-2016.

There were two seasons at Napoli amid those short-lived stays across Europe, with a Coppa Italia in 2013/14 his last major piece of silverware as a club manager.

Unable to save Newcastle from the drop in 2015/16, Benitez led the Magpies back to the Premier League and secured two comfortably mid-table top-flight finishes with a limited squad before spending 18 months with Dalian Professional in China.

MANAGERIAL STYLE

Often labelled a defensive-minded manager, Benitez has been heralded for his organisational qualities and attention to detail.

The man himself told FourFourTwo in 2019:

I like tactics – I like to play chess and I like to play Stratego. I liked it when I was 13, when I was playing and taking notes, and at 17 I was a coach and a player at the same time at university, so I’ve always liked tactics. I went to Italy to watch Arrigo Sacchi, Fabio Capello, and Claudio Ranieri when he was in charge of Fiorentina. I travelled all around the world, analysing tactics.

Upon the journeyman Spaniard’s appointment at Goodison Park, the Guardian’s Jonathan Wilson pointed out that Benitez’s most successful managerial spells came at those clubs just outside of the European elite – which could be a good match for the Toffees:

With a training method based on constant repetitions and rigorous drilling, it can seem as though he is trying to mould his players into pieces he can manoeuvre around the pitch. He distrusts individual inspiration, which can bring conflict with bigger egos, but that’s an approach that seems more logically suited to a club of Everton’s status than Ancelotti’s ever did. Benítez’s biggest successes have come with clubs on the fringes of the elite – Valencia, Liverpool (as they were) and Napoli – where the organisation he attempts to instil, uninhibited by the egos of stars, elevates players to compete with more obvious starry names.

His all-time Premier League record betrays a pragmatic approach; Benitez’s sides conceded at a rate of less than a goal a game, scoring a solid but not spectacular average of 1.53 goals per match.

FAVOURED TACTICS

A proponent of a back four for much of his coaching career, Benitez’s teams spent much of the last decade either in a 4-2-3-1 (eg Napoli) or 4-3-3 (eg Real Madrid).

It was at Newcastle, where he was in charge of a squad with limited ability, that we saw him adopt a defence-first 5-4-1/3-4-2-1 – a system he also experimented with when presiding over a similarly mediocre squad in China.

Above left: Benitez’s Chelsea in their 4-2-3-1
Above right: Benitez’s Newcastle in their 3-4-2-1

How he sees the best approach for Everton being will likely be revealed in pre-season but the adoption of a wing-back system would certainly heighten interest in Lucas Digne (£5.5m).

Benitez moved Newcastle to a 3-4-2-1 from Gameweek 13 of 2018/19 onwards; from that point, Matt Ritchie (£5.0m) created more chances than any other Fantasy defender bar – you guessed it – Digne. Ritchie was a left-wing-back on dead-ball duties under Benitez, the same role that Everton’s French defender would presumably be occupying.

With Benitez rarely using two central strikers and instead often deploying two narrower inside forwards either side of an attacking spearhead, Richarlison (£7.5m) would also likely see his job remit change from the one he had in Carlo Ancelotti’s 4-4-2 or 3-5-2.

A STRONG STARTER – GIVEN TIME

A full pre-season with Benitez, which started on the day of this article, bodes well for Everton and their Fantasy assets.

The new Toffees coach has a mostly excellent opening record with his new employers when given a summer to impart his “constant repetition and rigourous drilling”.

Just look at this rap sheet from the teams he joined ahead of a new campaign:

  • Extremadura: one defeat in his first 14 matches
  • Tenerife: two defeats in his first 14 league games
  • Valencia: unbeaten in his first 18 competitive games
  • Inter: one defeat in his first 11 Serie A matches
  • Napoli: five wins on the bounce, just two defeats in his first 15 fixtures in all competitions
  • Real Madrid: unbeaten in his first 14 competitive matches

Contrast that to his spells at Chelsea and Newcastle, clubs he took over midway through a campaign: the Blues and the Magpies were winless in their first three and four games respectively under Benitez before things turned for the better, having been deprived of a month or two of Rafa’s micromanagement in advance.

The exception to this general rule is Liverpool, where he lost three of his first seven Premier League games despite a full pre-season – although this is mitigated partly when we read that all three losses were away matches at clubs who went on to finish in the top six.

THE PROSPECTS

Benitez’s reputation as a strong starter after a full pre-season marries nicely with Everton’s opening fixture run.

The Toffees sit top of our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 1-10, meeting just one of the so-called ‘big six’ and enjoying some appealing home matches in particular.

Everton’s home form was woeful last season, something Benitez alluded to upon his appointment:

I think it is crucial for us to have the fans behind us. This year with the pandemic has been very difficult and football without the fans is totally different. I was following the form of Everton and obviously away from home, they have been fine but not so good at home. Why? Because they didn’t have the fans behind. It is crucial.

I am expecting the fans – and I know all the things that people talk about – but I am expecting the fans after one year of not going to the stadium to go and stay behind the team. We need the fans behind the team and I think they will be.

There-in lies the X factor with Benitez at Goodison Park: the fans.

He enjoyed unwavering backing from the watching public at Newcastle even when things were tough but he faces a much sterner task to win over the Everton faithful given his Red roots.

But it wouldn’t be the first time he has faced such hostility from his own fanbase, having encountered a similarly frosty welcome from the Chelsea support in 2012 – going on to finish third in the Premier League and win European silverware.

Southampton, Villa, Norwich, Burnley in the first six... looks good for DCL and Digne.

Depends which Villa & Burnley turn up. Leeds & Brighton in between those fixtures doesn't look too promising.

Both are still mid-table sides tbh, not the worst set of fixtures around.

More appealing for Digne, with Benitez a defence-first coach. Pickford is being overlooked, too.

Im interested to see what sort of team Burnley are this season. No recruitment hurt them last year, same again this year and I think they could be in real trouble.

Yeah, I can see why Tarkowski wants to leave. That lack of investment is setting them on a steady road to decline. Southampton could be in a similar boat, and I don't fancy Norwich to do more than struggle.
Only Villa appeal from the Everton opening fixture list, for me.

Yes you’re right about Soton actually. Ings refusing a new contract and talk of JWP moving on too (personally cant see it) they would lose their primary creator and finisher.

Think Burnley are fairly well set given they only play about 42 games a season. Really they need to sign a few squad players to cover the wings.

        Pope
        Lowton Tarkowski Mee Taylor
        Gudmundsson Cork Westwood McNeil
        Wood Vydra

        Peacock-Farrell
        Bardsley Long Dunne Pieters
        ????? Stephens Brownhill ?????
        Barnes Rodriguez

What’s weird about Everton’s “good” opening fixtures is - they actually have away trips to Brighton, Leeds, Villa in the first 5 weeks…

Those three defences are the darlings of FFS when getting defenders…, yet they are part of Everton’s “good” attacking fixtures

They also have Burnley, who can be solid as rocks when Pope is fit…

Southampton looks nice on paper, and if they started the way they did last season there could be problems..

But I’m just not sure people are doing proper homework with these “great opening fixtures” that Everton supposedly have?

Having said that, there are lots of potential merits to Digne & DCL for sure, but easy fixtures just may not be among them

For me, those games are against solid defences, making DCL less attractive, but apart from Villa and Leeds, the other 4 of the first 6 opponents don't score too well.

Yep a lot depends on Ings too - If he’s still at Southampton GW1, and is playing to keep himself in the shop window for a move… he could score vs anyone

But if he’s not there then yeah it does Digne’s clean sheet chances no harm at all

I've had Robbo, TAA & Salah placed in from the off, and the more I look at it the harder it is to part with any of them. I wouldn't normally go big at the back either, but the selection elsewhere's just too good not to.

I've knocked up a draft with Kane, Salah, Bruno and TAA. On one level it looks decent, but the bench is absolutely horrible, and there is no room to be flexible with the rest of the squad.

    6. Dr. Rog

Ghost team = 1, because the bench needs to be strong.
FPL team = 2, because there are no real budgetary constraints to prevent it, and a 2nd captaincy option is useful to navigate a tough fixture or play home vs away, or at least cover a surprise benching, suspension or injury.
Fools team = 3, because a 2 is company but 3 is a crowd - a premium is typically scoring 17-20 ppm, whilst other areas of the pitch you can attain 25-30 ppm. If you have 3 premiums, first of all you can only captain one, so you are only get a 1.33x uplift across your premium portfolio, and what it also means is that you cannot afford the other players who are going to be the engines of your team (25-30ppm), so you will have to settle on 15-25ppm players elsewhere.

With the government now prepared to let the cases number rise in the belief that the vaccine keeps Covid it at bay. I can see positive cases galore when the PL restarts. Strong 15 man squads are looking essential.

    5th transfer dilemma...

    Which would you prefer?

    A) Stekelenburg -> Pickford (Other GK is Donnarumma)
    B) Sarabia -> Mount/Olmo/Chiesa

Do we think cavani is nailed to start for United atm? What’s the situation with martial ?

I’m trying to fit him in but it means some sacrifices elsewhere in my team

He’s comfortably their best striker, but he’s also going to be 35 this season so I wouldn’t be expecting 50 games out of him

(Last season in the league he started 13, was subbed on for 13, and was injured for 7 + Of Utd’s final 7 league games he started 2, came on for 4, and was left out of the squad GW38 to rest for the EL final)

Ole will likely try pick & choose when he plays to keep him fresh

Whether that’s by starting him, wrapping games up and taking him off early… or benching him, and only bringing him on when things go south is probably still a bit TBD with Martial back and Greenwood potentially playing up front now that Sancho & Rashford will likely take the wider roles

I think if you’re going the Cavani route you might need patience/a strong nerve and a FT on standby

Cavani will start more than last year because he only got to full fitness around December then. He's still not expected to start regularly because of his age though. So not that suitable for fpl. Maybe first few weeks because there's no europe he might start all the matches.

Would it be safe to assume that the players who got knocked out of the Euros early will likely start the new Prem season from the off, i.e. Czechs and Portugal for example?

I seem to remember there was some paranoia after the last World Cup that a lot of the players that went far in the tournament wouldn't start the season, and iirc it wasn't as bad in the end as some feared. I may be misremembering though - I'm sure someone else on here has a better recollection and/or some facts.

Will Bertrand be first choice Leicester left back with Luke Thomas used for europa league or other way around?_ if he’s put in at 5 he could be tempting overlapping with Barnes down that left side.

They have a lot of fullbacks now - Pereira, Justin, Castagne, Thomas, Bertrand… bit of rotation looming there methinks

Meanwhile Fofana sitting at 4.5m if you really want leciester defence

They conceded 50 goals last year mins you

Yeah good point about number if full backs. Will be interesting to see how pereira and Justin are used when fully fit.

Pereira was first choice and hot until his injury. Need to keep an eye on pre-season and even then it might not answer the question.

It's not just the full backs. Leicester are never talked about when it comes to 'Big 6' or premiums, but they are quietly assembling a well-balanced squad, well-prepared for Europa and to make a decent assault on the Top 4 again. What this probably means for us, unfortunately, is a reasonable amount of rotation. I'd say Fofana is secure and great value, and Vardy is to be avoided, but the rest are somewhat up in the air.

    Insigne, Berardi, F.Torres, Damsgaard

    Pickford, Stones, Maguire, Sterling

Have 2FT remaining for any last minute changes to the Italy v Spain game - unsure if P.Torres or Berardi might start.

Premium defenders seem really under-priced this year. Really starting to think a 4-3-3 is the way to go.

No doubt I will end up wildcarding early, ha.

All defenders are down 0.5m, and the mid table strikers are all up 0.5-1m. Thats a reaction to last season was the COVID year where scores of 5-2 were not uncommon.

Of course the template is trying to optimise to last years team, but if you go back the 2 seasons before that everyone was looking at 5 at the back type teams. This season it makes sense more than most due to the pricing.

Have to be patient with it though, and a slight problem is that Chelsea & City dont have the best fixtures straightaway.

Right, and in my latest draft I've gone back to a Big Back 5.
        TAA, Robbo, Shaw, Maguire, Dias.

        1. Dr. Rog

I think the mistake the template is making is loading up on the 7.5-8m forwards. They are effectively priced to score as well as last year, which doesnt make them good value picks, it makes them FAIR value picks. Thats quite a key statement because we are searching for value in an area where there is none (they would need to score at Vardy-esque levels to be good value).

The trick will be to find the 6-6.5m forwards who can put in a 130-150pt season and use the value saved to either invest in a big back 5, or splurge on a Havertz/Foden type player in midfield if they end up doing a Mane/Son and generate points at level of consistency that propels them into the premium club.

I have a couple of drafts that cater to both, but the non-template element is a frontline that will be some combination of: Tammy (will move), Benteke, Toney, Rodrigo, Pukki, Welbeck, Fabio, Pedro. Form and fixtures depending.

As much as I like the idea from a value perspective, playing 5 defenders feels too risky for me.

I will most likely start with a back four of something like TAA, Shaw, Digne and Dias.

If Alonso moves to another club I may get Chilwell over Digne.

Don't worry, almost no one goes 5-at-the-back. I tend to cry off in the week before kick-off myself.

My front 3 are from that 6.5-8.0 bracket. I think there's value there. One has a good chance of scoring like Bamford last season, and there's enough variety to hop on and off others to catch brief streaks. Apart from Kane if he goes to City, none of the premium strikers look at all attractive - not just to me but just about every draft on here.
