The best budget FPL goalkeepers for 2021/22

Our position-by-position analysis of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) options for 2021/22 continues, as we assess the leading candidates in the budget (sub-£5.0m) FPL goalkeeper category.

In a season where there are six premium midfielders priced £10.0m or above, as well as three forwards, the £4.5m FPL goalkeepers could be more important than ever.

And while the majority of this season’s budget options are back-ups at their respective clubs, there is a small group that can offer real value, which we’ll explore in this article.

We’ve got every position covered, so take your pick!

Comprehensive Opta data on the players featured in these articles is available in our Premium Members Area. Let’s take a quick look at the list of best budget FPL goalkeepers!

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

ROBERT SANCHEZ

Gameweeks 1 – 8

Robert Sánchez (£4.5m) could provide excellent value and stands out amongst the best budget goalkeeper options.

The Spaniard secured the no. 1 jersey early last season and went on to claim 10 clean sheets and eight bonus points in his 27 outings. In fact, from Gameweek 13 onwards, only Ederson (£6.0m) and Edouard Mendy (£6.0m) accumulated more clean sheets.

It’s also worth noting that Brighton and Hove Albion play only two of last season’s top nine teams in the first eight Gameweeks.

Providing Mathew Ryan (£4.5m) leaves the club this summer, Sánchez can be paired with Albion’s reserve stopper Jason Steele (£4.0m), which guarantees you a starting goalkeeper for just £8.5m.

MARTIN DUBRAVKA

Gameweek 1 – 8

Since joining Newcastle United in January 2018 from Sparta Prague, Martin Dubravka (£4.5m) has been one of the Magpies’ most consistent performers.

He earned 11 save points in his 13 appearances last term, in addition to three clean sheets and six bonus points.

And while Newcastle United’s defensive numbers remain a concern, the Slovak international’s 3.29 saves per 90 minutes, which ranked seventh amongst keepers who featured for over 100 minutes last term, is promising.

It is a mixed start to 2021/22 for Steve Bruce’s side, but there is at least some clean sheet potential against Southampton and newly promoted Watford in the early weeks.

VICENTE GUAITA

Gameweek 1 – 8

For a team that is supposed to be defensively strong, Crystal Palace’s 2020/21 season was a disappointing one.

The Eagles conceded a massive 66 goals, their worst total since returning to the Premier League in 2013.

Despite this, Vicente Guaita (£4.5m) is a reliable keeper and could offer value, providing new manager Patrick Vieira can tighten them up.

However, his opening fixtures dampen his appeal, so at least initially, it’s probably best to look elsewhere.

ALEX MCCARTHY & FRASER FORSTER

Gameweek 1 – 8

Southampton’s goalkeepers didn’t exactly cover themselves in glory last season.

Both Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) and Fraser Forster (£4.5m) came in for criticism at different times, which meant plenty of rotation and plenty of headaches for FPL managers.

It is still unclear who is Saints’ no. 1, with manager Ralph Hasenhüttl predicting a “battle” for the jersey in pre-season:

“I think both still have one year left on their contracts and I expect both to stay, going into next season with a battle in pre-season for who is then allowed to start. If you are allowed to start it doesn’t mean you also end up in the season as a number one. I want to have this battle. I want to have two goalkeepers that are competing for this position. That should normally lead to a better performance from everybody.”

However, with a challenging fixture list which sees them take on both Manchester clubs and Chelsea in the opening weeks, it gives us plenty of time to assess the situation.

DANIEL BACHMANN

Gameweek 1 – 8

Watford returns to the Premier League on the back of a series of strong defensive displays.

They conceded the fewest goals (30) in the Championship last term, which included 23 clean sheets.

Having started 2020/21 as back-up to Ben Foster (£4.0m), Daniel Bachmann (£4.5m) was installed as the no. 1 after Xisco Muñoz arrived as head coach midway through the campaign.

Like Brighton, Watford have some of the better fixtures from a defensive perspective at the start of the season, which could make Bachmann a popular Gameweek 1 pick.

DAVID RAYA

Gameweek 1 – 8

Brentford arrive in the Premier League with the worst defensive record of all three promoted teams, having conceded 42 goals last season.

However, they didn’t concede a lot of quality chances. In fact, they had the lowest expected goals conceded (xGC) total in the entire division.

Brentford no. 1 David Raya (£4.5m) could therefore offer value, though the Bees’ ability to control matches will be severely tested in the top-tier.

Their first Premier League season will start with a London derby against Arsenal, before away games at Crystal Palace and Aston Villa.

TIM KRUL

Gameweek 1 – 8

Norwich City return to the top-flight with Tim Krul (£4.5m) as their current no. 1, having conceded only 36 goals in 46 Championship matches last season.

However, Angus Gunn (£4.0m) has recently returned to the Canaries, starting a third spell with his boyhood club in a permanent transfer from Southampton. That’s something to monitor in pre-season, though he is expected to at least start 2021/22 as a reserve.

The loss of Oliver Skipp (£4.5m) is a blow, and you do fear for Norwich with games against Liverpool, Manchester City, Leicester City and Arsenal to start.

Given their fixtures, it makes sense to avoid in the early weeks and reassess further down the line.

Elsewhere, the remaining sub-£5.0m FPL goalkeeper options detailed below are currently back-ups rather than potential starters, and will probably be relying on unfortunate injuries to feature more.

ArsenalRúnar Alex Rúnarsson (£4.0m)
Aston VillaJed Steer (£4.0m)
BrentfordEllery Balcombe (£4.0m), Patrick Gunnarsson (£4.0m)

48 ahead in ML. 40th in UK. Can get this team with 3 subs spare.

    Donna
    Bonucci Shaw Maguire
    Sterling Insigne Barella Chiesa Mount

Obviously will wait for line ups but how does that look? God knows who to captain!

      Fantastic work on your position!

Good point RE: potential captains. Could be a huge differentiator in a lot of tight leagues.

You've got most of the top performers in there - pending lineups (as you say), that seems good to go.

I'm finding it's helpful to have permutations in mind prior to the lineup announcements (so as not to get into a last minute flap). Probably good that you're already mulling over these things.

How do you check/know where you are in U.K./league?

I'm doing alright at 1420 overall.

Decided to have a play and see if I could join and top a national league. Turns out I am now N0.1 in Indonesia Euro Fans League, lol. I don't even know where exactly Indonesia is, but it's good to be the King, lol :).

I think the match will be very close, I cant really say who will win. That said, I'd captain Kane. He will play every single minute regardless, which you cannot say for any other attacker (bar Sterling, I guess). And on pens as well.

I guess it depends how you define breakout, like whether you mean it as a comeback player or player jumping on the scene but as boring as it may sound I think whichever Chelsea attacking player gets the most minutes Havertz/Pulisic/Werner will all end up high up the point charts. You could make a for or against case for any player that’ll be named by others though

Probably but this England team with the possible exception of Kane doesn't have the star names like say Bobby Robson (Robson, Hoddle, Barnes, Lineker, Gazza etc), or Eriksson (Rio, Sol, A.Cole, Gerrard, Lampard, Beckham, Owen etc), had at their disposal. Makes you wonder how Southgate is now the second most successful England manager of all time when his team is made up of a mix of inexperienced players (Rice, Phillips, Saka, Mount), and players who have struggled to hold down a starting place for their clubs at times during the campaign (Pickford, Walker, Stones, Shaw, Sterling)

Are you mad or on a wind up? Robson, Hoddle, Barnes, Lineker, Gazza etc), or Eriksson (Rio, Sol, A.Cole, Gerrard, Lampard, Beckham. - Would easily get into the current Team, in my oppinion anyways :).

What wind up? I really do believe these guys are better. You do know that people to agree on football, generally? I believe these players would walk into that squad too. In my eyes, England have got stronger along with smaller countries. The once bigger trophy winners have got weaker. I know you think the opposite and I respect your opinion.

I think the lack of big names help and also, unlike in the past, everyone actually has to earn their place. Someone like Sven would have Hendo playing instead of Phillips and Rashford on the RW.

I think Robson (1986, 88 and 90) and Eriksen (2006) had fixtures in their favour as well. They didn't have luck on their side however like Southgate. Hand of god goal, losing on pens, injuries to key players (Robson, Beckham), sendings off (Rooney), playing at Wembley.

          This.

Most every other Germany side probably beats England in the round of 16.

This is a good England team, make no mistake about that, but I get the feeling that there opposition is not as tough as previous generations.

You also need a fair share of luck to win any tournament, no matter how good you are. In previous seasons they genuinely haven't had that. This tournament the bounces seem to be going their way.

Again, that's not a slight on this England team, it's just the way it is, and you have to have that if you're going to win any tournament.

Sometimes it matters where you happen to turn up in history.

Only got to watch the replay last night. Poor old game really and England functional at best.

Reminded me of a PL team. If Spurs had a defence this was Mou Spurs to the tee with Sterling doing a very decent Sonny. Maguire and Stones looked fairly solid but suspect Walker makes them look better than they are with his pace in behind them.

What is the price tag for Walker Maguire Stones? Imagine Aurier could fill in for Shaw!

If Man Utd signed Ben White or Ben Godfrey, the Man Utd defence could be the England defence of the future. Would be good for Man Utd and England having an all English back five that play together all season:

      Henderson
      AWB White Maguire Shaw

Not sure AWB will ever get a look in - very decent defender and much improved on the ball but he’s playing the in the wrong era - too much competition and not the right sort of profile. Heck of a 5th choice!

Ben White seems a shoo in.

Actually wonder if it helps in a way that they don’t all play together all the time. That way you get both Klopp and Pep doing the in season coaching idea.

I felt Shaw, Walker and Rice were England's best throughout the game. Sterling was outstanding in the first half, and then he completely vanished in the second half! I thought he'd been subbed off at half time until I saw him fall over for the penalty

Need to disagree on Rice. Thought he was overpowered throughout. Phillips better IMO and the one for the future. That’s area in the team is the weakest link for me and where we need to step up in quality.

          Yes Philips is class.
Looking back, Stones and Shaw's turnaround over the course of last season, from where they were and how they were perceived by fans, to where they are now and how they're now perceived by fans, really is impressive to have witnessed. Pretty similar thinking about it.

I did think that Italy would've been watching that thinking they'd fancy themselves against either team.

The game reminded me of a Championship playoff final or something similar where the pressure is through the roof.

That said there were some quality moments including the opener, Kane's ball into Saka for the equaliser, Sterling's dribbling and Walker's defending.

Good comparison - there was a definite high to the match

Just listening to a podcast about the game right now and slightly confused by the raptures about the performance. Could be really late night watching jaded me. Also think Pickford losing his nerve and booting everything upfield made it feel all bit championship. When the ball was on the floor England looked decent but I has Denmark running midfield until they ran out of puff. Don't see Italy doing any worse.

Pickford had gone last night you could see as they lined up he was on one of his mad ones! However he will rightly point to the fact that he is yet to concede in open play after six games of a major tournament and I don't think enough is being of that.

I felt England looked nervous and the likes of Damsgaard and Dolberg were getting far too much room at the beginning of both halves. We were fortunate to that they tired but ultimately fitness and have depth is part of what makes a squad good and we apparently were fitter (Sterling was amazing in extra time!) and clearly we have much better reserves than they do and I think that made all the difference.

I'm a Netherlands fan, always have been since 1978, but there's no reason why England can't go on and win it.

I don't think Italy will be rubbing their hands at the prospect of playing England.

Kane is one of, if not arguably the best striker in the world, so you know that all it takes is one mistake or half chance and that could be the goal that
        wins the game.

Bith teams are solid defensively, really solid. Itakys mids are better, but Spain showed that you can cause Italy problems if you have pace and England have that.

They also have players like Grealish, Saka and Sterling who will run at you and get into the box with the ball. We saw last night that it's a nightmare for defenders because you dare not touch them for fear of giving away a (soft) penalty.

Look, I tipped Italy to win it all at the start of this tournament, so I have to stick with that pick. But by no means will I be in the least bit surprised if England don't walk away with the trophy on Sunday. They are more than capable of doing so.

    Sanchez/4.0
    TAA/Dias/Shaw/4.5/4.0
    Salah/Bruno/Sarr/Traore/4.5

That’s quite a lot at the back on a week 1 budget.

Who are you going for as your 3rd and 4th mid in a 343/352?

Apart from Raphinha, not really convinced by any of the other choices in the below 9m bracket.

Makes me want to start with a 433 and switch to 343 after a few weeks once we know the right budget midfielder to get.

Will have Watkins, so don't really want to double up by getting Buendia.

7.5 bracket has Jota/Pepe who are rotation risks while Mount/Gundo are a wait and watch for me due to their fixtures and role in the team respectively.

Yes this will be Barnes' breakout season agreed. I love Leicester so I'm getting three of them in my team as always. I'm going to watch preseasons with interest to see BR line up. He's put together a tidy squad this year and it's hard to fit them all in. If everyone's fit he'll have to leave out one of Barnes or Vardy or Madison or Nacho.

Could he not play a back 4 behind

          Ndidi, Maddison, Tielemans
          Barnes Nacho Vardy

Id guess that would be Leicester this season if all are fit - I definitely noticed Vardy was hanging way wide left at times during games towards the run in

Then he has Daka, Perez, Albrighton etc as cover for the front 3 positions, Praet, Mendy, Choudry cover for midfielders, loads of full backs, and picks two from Soyboy, Evans, Fofana at centrehalf

For tougher games he can play one extra centreback for one of the 6 further forward

Mahrez should start the season tot NOR ARS look pretty ripe for city, and Mahrez can become anyone later on - there are a lot of wait and see players that could become serious value (kai, pepe, jota, greenwood)

I am aiming to get a lot of non-12m heavy hitters.
So right now it is looking:

      Sancho - Havertz - Jota - Raphina
      Kane - Cavani - DCL

If necessary, will pull Jota up to a 8m~ asset and downgrade DCL. Really depends on if Salah is at the Olympics or how much of a break Firmino needs post-Copa

At the moment its Salah / Bruno / Jota / Barnes / Buendia.

Probably Lingard if he makes it back to West Ham

If not - probably either Barnes, Maddison, Buendia or Sarr depending on who’s hot and who’s not

I am thinking of doing an opinion piece on Chelsea; since I think there's a lot up in the air for that team. Wondering if anyone has any thoughts on them they're willing to share. How do you view Chelsea assets? Are there players you want (Havertz, Chilwell)? Are there players you're hoping can breakout (Ziyech, Pulisic, Werner)? Do you fancy Chelsea's defence to keep the solidity we saw in the Champions League, and for large parts of the PL too.

Bonus: If Chelsea were to sign Haaland, would you go in on him from the first week?

I think Chelsea will challenge for the league. My issue FPL wise with their players, is not so much about rotation as it is that TT subs defenders off during the game. I remember last season losing clean sheet points with Chelsea defenders getting subbed off, and on pre 60 minutes. Otherwise I'd love to have three Chelsea players in FPL.

So what seems to be a hugely template draft, I'm left with one decision - Salah or Kane!
    Which looks better:

    A) Salah & Nacho
    B) Jota & Kane

Think I prefer A if Kane stays put, but B if he goes to City.

    What does the hivemind say?

    Rest of template dross is:
    Sanchez/Foster
    TAA/Digne/Shaw/Fofana/4.0
    xxx/Bruno/Buendia/Sarr/Bissouma
    xxx/DCL/Watkins

I would never have gotten Messi, but Kane at City will be a must-have for me. Thing is, I really like my draft and don't want to 'rip it up', so my Kane-at-City version is without Salah. Probably just me, though.

            That's exactly my thought.
To include Mo, Kane & Bruno is too (and I know others will counter, but) damaging to the rest of the team's balance.
For me, if Kane goes to City then Jota is the logical Liverpool 'cover' for Mo.
If it hadn't been for Diogo's injury last season, he would have played (and likely scored) a lot more too.

As mentioned above - it would be GREAT if Mo pushed for his spot at the Olympics.
Pushes any Salah v Kane decision further down the line!
(DISCLAIMER; I don't think Liverpool will let him go)

Hey guys, i hope there will be some people willing to take a few moments to help me out with a dilemma. I'm deciding between a 3-4-3 or a 4-3-3 formation and i want to pick your brain on 2 drafts:

    A) 3-4-3 option:
    Sanchez - Foster
    Dias - Shaw - Ayling - Lamptey - Williams
    Salah - Bruno - Son - Harrison - Gilmour
    DCL - Watkins - Tomey

    B) 4-3-3 option:
    Sanchez - Foster
    TAA - Robertson - Shaw - Digne - Williams
    Salah - Bruno - Raphinha - Bissouma - Gilmour
    DCL - Watkins - Tomey

Very hard to compare this way. Can you just post the differences between these two squads?

Seems like it's go for TAA. Robertson Digne, or sacrifice them to get Son.
      I'd for B

      Attack - strong
      Defence - confusing

I'd downgrade Reguillon to get Shaw & TAA over their cheaper counterparts.

What if I just change AWB > Shaw and keep Robertson. I really like Robertson and Reguillon gw2-4 is really good tbh

          Yeah - I think AWB>Shaw is a MASSIVE upgrade.
AWB will rarely get you attacking returns.
Whereas Robbo/Trent can both bring home the bacon.

I'm not sold on Spurs this season at all, but each to their own.

Would monitor pre season closely. If not, Coufal, Tierney, Christensen (if he play) or any 5.0m bracket still far better than 4.5m def (if I decided 0.5m extra to get Robertson > TAA).

Sometimes we forget the sacrifices other family members have to make to help a young player develop into a professional footballer.

As a QPR fan this makes great reading, seeing one of our youth players come good and realising what went into it.

    https://www.theplayerstribune.com/articles/raheem-sterling-england-it-was-all-a-dream

I'm sure it's a story that's similar for pretty much every player but still good to remember the unsung hero's behind the scenes.

Sterling has been very good for England but is that due to Southgates system? He's the only forward playing well, the rest are struggling to create assists/goals.

Kane has four in two and was key to both goals last night. Also felt he looked great dropping off and collecting the ball in areas where he could create. Seems harsh to say he is struggling!

Fair bit to do with the system I suspect - in a way he's fulfilling the Son role beside Kane. Could there be a tie in with his peak at City coming when he had Kun in the middle and Sane on the other side.

My memory is that he went best when Sane was there to draw fire. He's been our brightest spark consistently but Saka helps him by stretching the defence is my guess and he too has been mostly very good.

Perhaps the City false 9 system isn't what brings the best out of him.

He's fairly fresh too and maybe motivated by a chip on his shoulder not getting much City gametime? Grealish has done very well in his time off the bench.

Could be up against Emerson, who's hardly played any football last season, on Sunday night. Though I think Mancini brought in Toloi on Tuesday night and switched him to LB, a trickier opponent for Saka. Have to laugh at a few YouTube clueless posts criticising Southgate for being so conservative and not starting Grealish more. He's so conservative that he's starting Saka!!!

You say "Southgate's system" - whilst he's a great motivator and leader, I put the fruits of the tactical system down to Holland and Stuart. Quietly, behind the scenes getting every selection and tactical decision spot-on.

I do think the front 3 combination of Kane, Sterling and Saka works well and will be the best combo v Italy - to start with.

Kane the slow striker who can get involved with holding the ball up etc.

Sterling the fast striker who makes runs, dribbles and takes advantage of the space made by Kane.

Saka, Mount (or Grealish, Foden) the creative ones who create chances, but Saka / Mount start because they put in a defensive shift.

Phillips and Rice protect the back four.

I mean it's a lovely, romantic picture you're painting of him, but the bottom line is all professional players at Harry's level perform to win trophies.

If he wants to move, he'll move. His family, his legacy and his bank balance are ultimately far more important to him than some nostalgic attachment to a club who as this day answers have let him down. Try explaining boot room loyalty to his other half.

He's off, mate. And if he stays he's a div.

I don't know how a club runs honestly. I'm just telling u that people have filed transfer requests before and they had to end up staying because the club wouldnt let them go. Another high profile example. Messi. Who's now a free agent.

Like I say, Harry has a choice. Holding him to ransom does nobody any favours in the long run though, least of all the new manager. Levy's no idiot, but if he's holding out for £150m he needs a check up from the neck up. And if Harry goes along with that then dafter him.

I would say that's a reasonable price given he's in his prime, still 3 years left on his contract, one of the world's best striker, is currently in the Euro final, and the market has been crazy for quite some time.

                        Okay.

So Levy's going to block the next year of his career, force him to play in a team who never win anything, stunt his new gaffer with an Aldi budget and offload him next year at a cut price - just to prove a point he was probably worth around a hundred and fifty mill when Levy wanted it?

I'm sure that'll reflect wonders on the pitch.

I mean i gave Messi's example as well. Quite similar to Kane in that they'd only be sold if their valuation is met. It's more realistic for Kane but still a bit too much for City imo. If they fork it out I think Levy will accept but i believe they won't so Kane will end up staying.

What grounds does the new manager have for suggesting Spurs will win anything when they won nothing under Pochettino or Mourinho? If Kane stays, they don't have the budget to strengthen the squad sufficiently to challenge. Kane will leave - it's just a matter of this summer, winter or next season.

Spurs are a good manager (although questionable whether that is Nuno) and a few defensive signings away from being title challengers IMO.

Conte was the man for them. A 3-at-the-back manager with title winning experience.

If the Spurs' players were afraid of Conte being appointed then it shows there is something wrong with the players mentality. Because Conte has won more things as a player and as a manager than they have won as players.

Sp*rs will never win anything. Its not in their mentality.

Last season they were top at xmas, had the manager who has won everything, they have good defence/mid players and Son+Kane were the best partnership in the league since Cole+Yorke.

And where did they end up? In the Europa Conference League!

He's going for sure, City & Levy are just playing mind games.

They played well but legs went, when your tired after the tournament and 80 minutes it can’t be easy to play 30 minutes against a fresh grealish and foden, England’s squad is strong and it told out in the end

I was delighted seeing Damsgard and Dolberg getting hooked when they were. They were finding a rhythm and had England centre backs on the ropes for the ten or so minutes beforehand.

In previous games they faded in the second half. It looks to me like they lacked fitness. I assumed the manager took off their best players when they were sorely needed because he knew they had nothing left in the tank.

personally think it was an extremely one sided semi-final, made interesting by a wonderful freekick and a man of the match perfomance by Schmeichel, who looked every bit the spitting image of his father in his prime. the key part of this statement, is "at the start". their entire squad, sans 1-2 players, plays in the championship or its equivalent they just didnt have the fitness levels to compete with elite level premier league athletes. whilst England were bringing on Grealish, Foden etc they were bringing on some guys from Brentford and Fulham. its no disrespect to them but it felt a lot an FA Cup tie. the plucky minnows made a good fist of it but during extra time their legs had gone and england could've had 4 or 5 if they didnt take their foot of the gas. I've never seen a passage of play from England like the last 5 minutes of that match - they strung 50+ consecutive passes together and played keep ball like Spain whilst the Danes just watched and waited for the final whistle.
