FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

The £5.0m options

The biggest talking point in the £5.0m goalkeeper slot is that both Manchester United shot-stoppers come in at that price. Dean Henderson took over from David de Gea late last season, as the Spaniard became the custodian for United’s run to the Europa League final.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, as is his way, never revealed which player he considers to be his No 1 stopper. However, the Man Utd boss did admit he would have to make a call on his first-choice selection for this season.

“I’m really pleased with the two of them; it’s difficult to have that kind of rotation, you don’t rotate that much normally. I’ll have to find a solution for next year definitely.” – Solskjaer on Henderson and De Gea

From Gameweek 28, Henderson started eight times in the Premier League with de Gea beginning just twice. The England man does seem to be the incumbent, though further clarity is needed on the situation ahead of Gameweek 1.

Arsenal (5th) were just behind Man Utd (4th) for ‘expected goals conceded’ (xGC) over the second half of the season. Bernd Leno comes in a £5.0m, though faces Chelsea and Manchester City over the opening three Gameweeks.

Lukasz Fabianski (£5.0m) is up against Newcastle (a), Leicester (H) and Crystal Palace (H) in the first three rounds of matches. From Gameweek 1 to Gameweek 6, West Ham sit fifth on our Season Ticker when sorted by defence.

The best mid-price and premium goalkeepers for FPL 2021/22

Jordan Pickford’s (£5.0m) Everton sit third on that list. The Toffees are expected to be a defence-first outfit under Rafael Benitez. Everton kept 10 clean sheets with Carlo Ancelotti in charge last season, while Pickford made 89 saves – ranking a lowly 13th among shot-stoppers for that metric.

Pickford could potentially be the most popular Everton defensive asset, should Lucas Digne (£5.5m) not be fit for the season opener after suffering an injury on France duty.

Rui Patricio is another £5.0m option under new management. Wolves were seventh best for xGC from Gameweek 20 onwards. Only time will tell how Bruno Lage’s appointment affects the Molineux outfit in terms of defence and attack. Clashes with Leicester City (a), Spurs (H) and Man Utd (H) in the opening three Gameweeks will give Fantasy bosses plenty of time for assessment.

Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) might be more appealing, with that visit from Wolves coming ahead of games against West Ham (a), Norwich (H), Manchester City (H), Brighton (a) and Burnley (H). The Denmark keeper does have to compete with the kindly-priced Wesley Fofana (£4.5m), however. And that’s not to mention the competition for all of these goalkeepers in standout £4.5m option Robert Sanchez.

Similarly, Illan Meslier (£5.0m) is £0.5m more expensive than all but one of his defensive colleagues. The Leeds stopper was fourth overall for saves last season (141), with two of the other three keepers now relegated.

The Premiums

جولة الفانتسي 34: اللاعبين الرئيسين وإحصائيات الفرق 1

The remaining member of that quartet is Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez (£5.5m), who made 143 saves in 2020/21. As with Meslier, Martinez comes at a premium compared to Aston Villa’s regular starters in defence who are all priced at £5.0m.

Martinez was far and away the top-scoring keeper last season with 186 points. Dean Smith’s side were sixth worst for xGC over the second half of the season, however. The Argentina netminder still represents a decent set-and-forget goalkeeper option, though Villa’s fixtures take a turn for the worse in Gameweek 4 and we’ll likely be relying on save points during that run of games.

Nick Pope (£5.5m) missed out on EURO 2020 due to a knee problem which required surgery. Couple that with a tough opening six Gameweeks for the Clarets and it seems unlikely that too many FPL players will be sending up white smoke for Gameweek 1.

Hugo Lloris is the final £5.5m man between the sticks. The France keeper is now under the tutelage of Nuno Espirito Santo. No Spurs defender costs more than £5.0m and the north London outfit have a testing first six gameweeks, so Lloris may get overlooked heading into GW1.

andy-article-gameweek-29 1

Fixtures could see the same fate occur for Edouard Mendy (£6.0m). The Chelsea keeper has been priced at a premium, with the Blues recording the best xGC in the league from Gameweek 20. They were the league’s meanest defence from that time, conceding just 13 times under Thomas Tuchel’s tactics. Chelsea take on four of the ‘big six’ in the opening six Gameweeks, however.

Alisson (£6.0m) may struggle to compete with his team-mates for a precious Liverpool spot. The Reds top the season ticker when sorted by attack and their flying full-backs are always well involved going forward.

Ederson (£6.0m) would also block an outfielder triple-up at his club, though the Man City netminder comes with a security of starts that can only be matched, in defensive terms, by Ruben Dias (£6.0m).

Tying up 6 mil at the start is hard to move on a goalkeeper. So maybe avoid Ederson early doors.

Not keen on Ederson and Dias both at 6m. Feels like you can use your funds better with a GK with saves and BPS and def with attacking potential

I think Dias could be a very shrewd pick. I wouldn't go near Ederson though simply because I don't see him getting anywhere near the value offered by 4.5 goalkeepers.

Yep, sometime its Trent and sometime its Robertson. Based on last few games heatmap, looks like Robertson takes more.

Never felt like Robertson's corners are threatening enough, might have watched wrong games.

As Holmes says, their first 8 GWs are ghastly from an attacking pov. Plenty time to assess; if Barnesy looks good, it might be time to downgrade a third striker.

I would not go near Barnes got stung by him before. Wood is the player to get from Burnley and just leave him there for the season. Wood-Iheanacho-Wilson could be the potential bargain 7.5m and under strikers this season.

        1. pingissimus
          • 5 Years

Wholly different price brackets now though

I'd find it impossible to pick Wood as a notional set and forget ahead of budget mids. Barnes would need to stay injury free but he's a more than decent early season 8th attacker who can be second bench say in a makeweight role.

All of this is contingent on preseason and his regaining his spot. It may be he is now past buy by date but fit he has matched Wood.

Huge question mark for me over Vardy.

He returned pretty consistently last season but nowhere near his price point after his early season penalty splurge. Assists are fine but they don't get baps. He also failed to get a single goal all season that wasn't a big chance and was neck and neck with Werner for all the negative stats.

Suspect he'll be performing a different role here on in as a wider player. At 8.5/9.0 or so I might have look but not at 10.5.

I wouldn't have called it that way tbh.

We're all football fans and know that sometimes the decision falls for you, sometimes against.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion. They're good talking points. My view is that the penalty award was soft, but justified.

Nor would I for what it is worth. There will always be contact when playing. I do feel the minimal amount of contact in some decisions is encouraging players to dive or fall over rather than play the game. Maybe it will change someday as the balance seems to be more with the attacking rather than defending team at the moment.

I'd agree with that in terms of outfield players, but not goalkeepers, who I reckon are also given preference in a one-on-one.

We've had discussions in previous seasons that players like Aguero, should have justifiably gone down more based on the contact involved. He played on - more my type of player also.

Because I watch him week in week out and see his antics. I am an ex professional footballer, maybe old in the tooth, but very frustrating to see him at times. Maybe can't stand him is the wrong wording; I don't know him. Very frustrating to say the least.

By antics do you mean diving?

My issue is that football is a game with a system that currently rewards buying fouls and diving. Bernardo Silva at Man City is another who, along with Sterling, goes down far too easily but its because they know it'll get rewarded.

If I had my way, I'd remove penalties altogether! So many pens are an unfair punishment for the offence in question. The other night Sterling has posing very little threat in the position he was in when fouled, as the ball had run away from him. A pen was an unfair punishment even if a foul had been committed.

If you were a professional today you would probably be spending an afternoon each week practicing diving and falling over. Sterling isn't the only one, Kane has been falling over on a regular basis along with many other players from just about every team. Watch Immobile after Italy scored against I think Spain was comically bad. One thing I find hard to watch is the amount of face clutching and feigning head injury in the Euros. Refs no longer stop play when players do this beacuse of the maount of play acting.

I don't think Stones is worth 5.5 when his minutes are massively under threat by Laporte. If you want to go that way though and have Mahrez too, I think you might want a stronger bench.

Thing about Stones (and Laporte) is you're not going to get a late-sub 1 pointer. Either he plays 90 mins or your first sub gets a game. So long as you have a decent sub, having Stones play 70% of PL games could still be value.

Will Stones play 70% of the games though? That is an unknown with a fully fit Laporte in contention. If spending 5.5. on a defender I want him nailed. Throw in Mahrez as a rotation risk and you could have two players (not accounting for any other unexpected issues, Welbeck doesn't exactly have a good injury record) and you are calling on a bench of Ayling (might be okay depending on fixture) a 4.5 fodder mid and a complete fodder defender. Not for me.

Further to my pointy above, your draft lacks bench cover for Stones, Mahrez and Welbecks.

this is very true. based on current info im viewing Mahrez as a 3 week placeholder/cashcow for anyone and Welbeck is really keeping Pukki's seat warm.

Robbo+Buendia is another configuration that looks valid.

I think the fact he's been brilliant during the Euros. Was on some set-pieces toward the end of the season too at United.

I don't trust United but they seem to not give up too many chances. Prices for Shaw, Maguire and Wan-Bissaka look OK to me.

Not sure I've seen a VVD yet.

Had him early last season and switched him out on early WC. If memory serves he did get me a goal in his short stint. Have him in mind here as my "budget" premium defender if I go that way.

Historically matches Robbo - at his best - for value

I'd have Lamptey as high priority and would make the Sanchez swap on the understanding that a reasonably early WC was likely and you could hop on the best 4.5 gk then if one emerges.

        1. Mr. O'Connell
          • 11 Years

Lamptey is all fart no poo. Great to watch, but doesn't translate into FPL points. As injury prone as they come too, unfortunately.

            • 5 Years
            2 years, 9 months ago

Hit him almost perfectly early last time out so biased. He doesn't really need to do much to be value and there is heaps of potential there - Sanchez valid call at 4.5 but very low save count doesn't attract. Lamptey is the upside choice surely.

            Fair point on injury record

True. I need to get better at seeing through managers BS in press conferences tho. There was a good chunk of the season where Potter never ruled him out and even when he was out it was only ever "short term". Always tended to be a more pressing transfer as well.

I also sat on Grealish for about 8 weeks too long for that matter, so it's probably my issue.

      Triple Villa?

The red run from week 4 may not turn out to be as awful as it looks but you're locking in an early WC quite possibly. Awkward when you also have triple Liverpool who have two of their best early fixtures in 5/6.

Not right now, I expect the front four will be Buendia, Grealish, Watkins and a new attacking midfielder (Smith Rowe has been linked).

Grealish leaving could change things tho, and if El Ghazi gets enough minutes, he's a really good option.

Hi Tom, hope all is well. Be good to hear your thoughts on Buendia as an FPL asset at the start of the season. I thought he was superb for Norwich past couple of years and am tempted to include him in my GW1 team alongside Watkins although part of me wonders if it would be more sensible to wait and see how he settles in. Sarr the other contender for me in that price bracket.
