Gareth made so many great decisions all tournament and with the last minute he had control of he brought on Rashford and Sancho for the penalties. Harsh

Southgate should have made tactical changes at half time and attacked Italy. Henderson and Grealish came on too late.
England had the best squad, what a missed opportunity.

Don't want to be overly harsh because don't see what's happening in the trainings, but it was a strange decision imho to have Saka shoot the last penalty. He was so awful after he went on the pitch, it was visible he is extremely nervous (with all the respect, huge fan of his talent).

I don't see how it takes anything away from the winners. If anything, having medals for second place is a way of sharing their victory. Like giving points for first and second in a motor race, instead of just for first. You could argue it's respectful of the England players to show Italy that they are the only ones worthy of being celebrated and rewarded.

Ever won a medal yourself? You obviously don't understand the bitter taste of failure or the sweet smell of success. There will be many more competitions where these guys will excel. When you wake up tomorrow morning, ask yourself if you have even tried to accomplish something as hard as a win.

Risking Rashford on for Walker rather than Sterling or Grealish for the closing minutes is odd given that Southgate didn't trust any of them enough to take a penalty.

England should be one of the favorites for the WC now I think.
    Young squad getting better.

SF, Runners-up and some great experience.

Really was a coin toss for a winner.

Seems the side lacks the right player for their structure that unlocks a game. Sterling is the closest, but it feels like a real number 10 would be the answer. I don’t think that’s Grealish either.

Be interesting to see if one develops In the next year.

I mean a coin toss over the whole game. Despite Italy having more possession it was a tight match decided by a save rebound goal.

It was close to coin toss, but Italy was better during 2nd half tbh. I believe stats will confirm this.

True but it’s more than a 45 minute game.
Both teams won a half and scored a goal.

Neither took control in extra time.

Point is sometimes games are tight and you win and sometimes you lose. Don’t think this was a damning performance (though I have gripes with some of Southgate’s decisions).

And I think the experience puts them in a better position for the WC albeit on the margins.

Well done Italy, you deserved to win on the overall balance of play England were pretty good and better in the first half but then Mancini made some changes and England were just outplayed.

Gareth Southgate has got a hell of a lot right in this tournament and deserves massive credit but he got so much wrong tonight. The worst for me being taking so long to replace Mount with Grealish just doesn't make sense, I cannot see any justifiable reason to wait 7 minutes rather than doing it at the start of extra time.

Unless he resigns, which I doubt, then he's going to be the England manager for the foreseeable future. I just hope he learns from the mistakes he made tonight and takes time to consult properly with knowledgeable people in the game who can hopefully help to kick a bit of his observed stubbornness and inertia out of him.

He already consults with many knowledgeable people in many sports, not just in football.
He did learn from mistakes he made in the World Cup, and is always looking for ways to improve.
He's produced a squad who respect him and each other and work together well, instead of separating into Club-based cliques that hate each other.
He may not be perfect, but he's been more successful than any other England manager since Alf Ramsey, including other periods when we thought we had a golden generation.
A World Cup semi-final followed by a Euros Final is a pretty good record, even though we hoped for more.
We deserved to reach the final, but lost to the best team in the tournament. The match was closely fought, and could easily have gone the other way with a bit of luck. The result was a fair reflection on our current strength.
And we now have a successful policy for developing young players, which gives us further hope for the future.

I was surprised though that with all the preparations he has made with all his players for taking penalties that we couldn't have scored more than two out of five. Perhaps there just weren't enough top penalty takers in his first eleven.

I would just love to know the logic of the ‘stuttered run up’ penalty

No keeper worth his salt is diving that early and look at all the great penalty takers - Kane, shearer, Rooney, Lampard etc - all just hit it hard into a corner
