To think that England team went through the final is more of the squad quality rather than managerial tactic, so defensive and lame. Not to mention, Italy was playing on away game.
    They need a better manager.

Oh, and Southgate didnt bring JWP to Euro hurt even more...

England fans are some of the worst in the world. Obviously not all of them, but a huge proportion are uncouth. Maybes its just all the years of frustration.

For example, I've lived for long periods in 7 European countries but never seen anything like this

If you think that even remotely compares with the 80s, find some documentaries about it. That video didn't show fights, nor the window getting smashed. Plenty of litter Yes but where was the violence that you claim?

Not the point. Are these even fans or just frustrated people getting jarred up and then looking for trouble? True fans support their side and then go about the business of enjoying the game and the afters - shake the hand of the opponent - win or lose.

These aren't Italians so false information to begin with. Secondly if you are moronic enough to break through barriers, rush security, put the safety of others at risk, dodge all covid protocols and invade a stadium then at some point you will probably face a well deserved kicking. Bravo to the fans for sending them packing I say.

England fan here. Master display of game management there. 1 nil down in 2 minutes is a disaster in a final that probably contains 3 goals max. To work their way back in and then dominate is admirable. Real big boy displays from bonucci, verratti and Chiesa.

England thought they’d won it. You don’t win big tournaments with midfields that can’t dominate games.

IT'S GOING TO ROME!!! Well deserved, Italy. England will never overcome the loser mentality. They will ALWAYS mess it up with penalties when it really matters. You score in 2nd minute, in front of full Wembley, bursting with support, and what do you do? Park the bus, Gareth, park the bus... English played like losers from the start, and that is what happened in the end. When you start the final with 5 defenders, 2 defensive midfielders, it's clear, your underwear is full of it. About Jorginho tackle and why it was never a red - because his foot slided off the ball (if it was a direct tackle, a red, 100%), there was no intention to tackle Grealish. So the yellow was the right decision. And where was Sterling during the penalties? Like I said on Wednesday - just a diver with limited footballing skills. The only guy I really feel for, and who doesn't deserve to be in either of such 2 loser sides (Totteham and England) is Kane. I hope he moves somewhere, because that player deserves better, and deserves trophies.

What an utterly weird comment to make.

Clearly shows your lack of understanding when it comes to anything football related.

Ask Bonucci and Chiellini and Jorginho and any other player in that team what they think about Sterling and Phillips and Rice and Saka and I guarantee you their opinions would be absolutely nowhere what you think.

What lose mentality are you on about? The same mentality that got England to the final? Or the loser mentality of a 19 year old with almost no international experience who stepped up to take a decisive penalty? Or maybe Jordan Pickford's loser mentality after saving two penalties in the final of a European competition? Or was it Luke Shaw's incredible goal, which, let's face it, if it was scored by Brazil or Italy in a final, would be talked about for decades to come.

Italy deserve the win. They were better than England and in hindsight, maybe such an early goal got in England's way when it came to managing the game. Who knows. Even still, England were able to deal with Italy for the entirety of the game and eventually succumbed in the penalty shootout.

True champions, GREAT champions always value and respect and revere their opponents - this is what every single one of the Italian team will be thinking towards England and their players. It's such a shame that time and time again it's the fans that let tribalism and emotions get in the way of being able to treat other people with any shred of decency whatsoever.

Your comment has no place in this thread - I'm all for banter if it's entertaining, light-hearted and relevant but come on, what are you hoping to gain from writing this?

Only loser mentality on show here is from you buddy.

Ok, trolling aside now (only doing it because there were A LOT of English fans doing just that on Wednesday, even on this website while others brought up a fact that, yes, it was a dive).
I would LOVE to ask Bonucci and Chiellini or even Maehle what they think about Sterling, especially off the record.
Never mentioned Saka in any context, nor I would, esp. not in a negative context. If there is an English fan blaming Saka for this, they need a slap. That boy shouldn't have been allowed to shoot the final penalty in such situation. That's why I'm questioning Sterling, or even Grealish, for not stepping up. Or not being allowed to step up (which I think was the case here). Southgate completely dropped the ball, and all out of pure fear.
If you have 6/7 games in front of home crowd, a kind nudge from the ref in the semifinal, and you score right at the start of the final in front of full Wembley, you go for the 2nd mate. You DO NOT park the bus. That's the loser's mentality. Breaking when it matters the most.
About the tribalism and emotions - do you honestly think that any non-English fans would be allowed to even breathe from the noise that's been created by media in the last 2 weeks, and among the fans, if the England won tonight? Not to mention the harassment that some Danish fans living in UK went through after the semifinal. Worst hosts ever.

This guy is totally slagging England off after moving here from his shanty town back street apartment. Trying to be a keyboard warrior whilst pulling himself around his front room. The world is jealous of our great national and it gives them a little light relief when we occasionally fail at something. However we are still the envy of the world where everyone wants to live. So sweet dreams buttercup. It isn't our fault that you aren't us.

You know it’s this whole attitude you’re displaying that makes people not want England to win don’t you? It’s YOU they dislike. If it was just about those players, most of us would have no problem with England winning. But the whole, “envy of the world where everyone wants to live” bit, while I know is only to make yourself feel better, is laughable. The whole world saw how your fans behave. For Italy to bounce back from the disappointment of not qualifying for the last World Cup and go unbeaten for 34 games and win this tournament while completely changing their style of play over this period and becoming a joy to watch is truly spectacular. We could make 7 free changes by wk8 which might be enough to rebuild the team anyway.

I think it’s unfair to describe that goal as a fluke. It was a pinpoint pass and a perfect half volley. It’s ok to say Italy dominated the majority of the game thereafter but you can’t take anything away from Shaw/Trippier with that goal.

I like not having Bruno in the team…

    Sanchez, Forster
    TAA, Shaw, Coufal, Ayling, Lamptey
    Salah, Son, Havertz, Pepe, Raphinha
    Watkins, Antonio, Perica

    Only one 4.5 throw away.

Well no because a penalty during the play of the game, whether it should have been given or not, is entirely different to a shoot out.

England have been fantastic, Southgate and the players deserve lots of credit. Only just lost the tournament, brilliant efforts all round.

I would love Sterling in my week 1 team but apparently the masters at fantasy are scared of mispricing city assets. Surely the threat of rotation should be enough to make them affordable?

    City-less all season for me.

England showed no ambition despite being 1-0 up. Despite the talent at their disposal they weren't setup to control the game as shown by their measly possession stats which didn't play to the strength of their personnel. They invited Italy back into the game and paid the price. In the end the clearly better team won.

I think Southgate is a likeable guy but I feel a better coach is needed for this crop of players. It reminds me of Chelsea last season, nothing against Lampard he's an intelligent man but once Tuchel came in you could see a huge difference just by the way he set up and organised the same group of players. Difficult to see who they could get, most of these other International coaches like Martinez, Lowe, Enrique, De Boer are also fairly below par.

I get where the feeling comes from but I think England lack key midfielders which would allow them to play a possession game.

No number 10 and no number 8s who can stroke the ball around. At least not in this squad.

They look their best when Kane drops deep with overlapping wings but that’s not possession football, that’s trying to create half-pitch counters basically.

Are there any players coming up who could sit in the middle and control a game?

I'm sure he'll get Qatar but unless he gets success or things change it should be his last tournament.
England had an easy ride this Euros. The way it was setup with venues it was actually more advantageous for England than if the entire tournament was set in England having all but the Ukraine match in London... at least then, the likes of Denmark don't have to bounce around Netherlands and Azerbaijan in that scenario before meeting England in London. They beat an okay German side and that's about it. The final was there for the taking earlier and it didn't happen and it was down to tactics and the team setup.

Not dissimilar to 2018, an easy side of the draw and then bested by Croatia. Talent-wise only France are probably better than England right now.

The France team that lost to Switzerland because they stopped playing when they were 3-1 up? Showboaters who didn't want to get stuck in. England were the second best team in Euros. Only in hindsight can people say they had an easy draw. Not their fault that Portugal, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany all underperformed.

Yes that France. Did you read my comment? They were far from the best team in the tournament, barely showed up.
I said from a purely talent perspective they, and England were 1 and 2.

I read it. France only had talent though. Too complacent and reliant on Benzema and no stomach for a fight. England had less skilful footballers but plenty of fight and Southgate had them well organised to go through the rounds. Pragmatic and boring in comparison to the French va va voom, but saw them go further.

See that's just it.. skill-wise, England have the superior talent to Italy. And yet despite the dream start they allow Italy to come back into the game and control it.
They end up with 33% possession, about 1/3 of Italy's attempts at goal, get outplayed for the vast majority of the match and then the story in the media is..those damn penalty shootouts! so unlucky! It makes absolutely no sense

I don’t know if I buy that. Other than at wing back and striker I think Italy are at least equal, and importantly in the midfield they are ahead of England.

Also Mancini managed a better game than Southgate, his subs changed the game and swung the momentum.

But what are you trying to say here?

England have 1 of the best two squads - they made the final.

Italy outplayed England for most of the game - England got it to penalties.

Southgate’s decisions didn’t give England the best chance to win today - that is something no one is arguing with from what I can tell.

Yeah I don’t buy that easy run stuff.

It’s so hard to win deep into a tournament and England have done it twice in a row. Not sure what else they have to prove that they’re a good team being managed well.

      Winning is really really hard.

If Southgate gets them to another SF at the WC he should stick around. He probably should regardless.

It was clearly an easier run.
Ukraine in the QF who lost to Austria, had held on to beat North Macedonia and needed nearly 120 minutes to beat 10 man Sweden. Denmark the neutral's favourite playing above themselves is a fsvourable semi final, and even though England were clearly the better team that night, they still only won by a very contentious penalty decision.

Easier run or not they won the games. Winning games is hard.
No idea if they would have beaten other teams because they didn’t play them.

The only reason to bring it up is to belittle their performance and I just have no reason to do that and I don’t know why other people do.

I like that England squad and would've been happy to see them win it. My original post was about the coach.
England were the better side in the first half, Italy couldn't get anything going. Second half, Mancini made a few adjustments and they pretty much bossed the game from then on. Southgate failed to make his own adjustments and paid the price. That's my point. It wasn't unlucky, it would have been unlucky had the better team lost the shootout.

I agree with a lot you say. England panic passing in the 2nd half created issues. Not so sure South gate could do much about that, Conservative approach got us this far but eventually failed. The age of the pen takers was a risk in itself. Bringing 2 players on for penalties was a big error in judgement. No chance for nerves to settle for the youngsters.

I agree. Same thing that happened against Croatia as happened against Italy.

Against Croatia, they changed formation and Vrsaljko got lots of freedom down the right. Our spare man was Dele Alli, but he was kept central rather than being told to block Vrsalkjo. Eventually Vrsalkjo nails one of his crosses and we concede.

Against Italy, we were on top for 30 minutes, then the midfield three of Italy figured it out and were ticking. Our wing-backs and Rice and Phillips were getting pushed back and while Rice did make a few breakout runs, we were under pressure. At no point did Southgate change formation to stop Jorginho or Verratti.

-Maybe have some set pieces in him.
-Benitez and almost all coaches in the world should know his capabilities and maximise it
-Quite a talisman when he play
-Start training recently, hope match fit and show some promising action in friendlies

Dead right. Southgate does learn. He made some mistakes tonight but TAA and a few others coming in also will create the best side (on paper) in the world. An irony where our weakness lies in defense was the best part of England.

              🙂

My point was more that the talent distribution is very uneven in the squad. Behind Stones and Maguire is frighteningly substandard unless White makes the step up. But at RB AWB is a heck of a player who may never get so much as a squad call up. What we need to do is switch some of that forward power and RB talent into the the central areas where we either have no cover or are underpowered right now.

All your points are valid. It is normal to see mids and defenders come through late as they are harder to recognise. We definitely miss a quality playmaker in midfield and there is little backup in defense. Bellingham should make a difference. White we will see is a class act IMO. The temptation to pick all the "shiney toys" can be an issue.

The problem is no one tomorrow is going to reflect on WHY England lost. Just as they didn’t after the Croatia game. Better team, better squad, lost both games. Because Mancini is a tactically brilliant coach and Gareth Southgate is a nice bloke. Unless the powers that be realize this (or maybe Southgate could do them the favour) we’ll be singing about more years of hurt after the World Cup that we should enter as one of the favorites.

Hard on a young squad, they needed leaders out there tonight, they needed direction from the side line, they needed a coach to change things up as Italy gained ascendancy. Sadly England had a “nice bloke” on the sidelines passively watching the game pass him by.

    Again.
