FPL tools: Tips on how to use the ‘per 90’ filter

There is a vast array of tools available in Fantasy Football Scout’s Premium Members Area that can help Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers with their planning ahead of the new season.

In a series of articles to be published ahead of Gameweek 1, we’ll be guiding you through a selection of our most-used features and some of the less well-known.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

We start with the ‘per 90’ search filter.

By ticking the ‘per 90’ checkbox next to the ‘Filter’ button, subscribers can see the usual range of player data in a different way: that is, all the figures given, be it shots, saves, yellow cards or any other metric, are shown per 90 minutes.

A ‘before and after’ example is shown below:

From the top image, we can see, for example, that Ruben Dias (£6.0m) kept 17 clean sheets in total last season – a high among FPL defenders.

Clicking on the ‘per 90’ tickbox, his teammate John Stones (£5.5m) tops the pile among first-team regulars with 0.63 clean sheets per 90 minutes.

EXACT TIME PLAYED

We should point out at this juncture how the ‘per 90’ metric is calculated.

Rather than use the usual ‘Mins’ (aka ‘Time Played’) figure that we are used to seeing in the Player Stats tables, the ‘per 90’ tool harnesses a statistic called ‘Exact Time Played’.

The difference between the two is, effectively, injury time: the former doesn’t factor it in, the latter does.

To give an example: Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) played 3,105 minutes in 2020/21 when we exclude stoppages but 3,231 minutes when we incorporate that added time at the end of each half.

The ‘Exact Time Played’ figure is one that subscribers can use in their custom stats tables, should they so wish.

WHY IS THE ‘PER 90’ FILTER USEFUL?

For those of us who pay heed to underlying numbers, raw statistics can sometimes be misleading.

This is especially the case when we are looking at a group of players who have played a contrasting number of minutes.

Take Diogo Jota (£7.5m), as an example.

The Liverpool asset had only 38 shots in the box in 2020/21, some 60 short of Mohamed Salah‘s (£12.5m) tally and a total that was beaten by 18 FPL midfielders.

However, the former Wolves man clocked up only 1,165 minutes of Premier League football in a stop-start season.

When we apply the ‘per 90’ filter, Jota shoots to the top among Fantasy midfielders for shots in the box per 90 minutes:

WHERE CAN I USE THE ‘PER 90’ STAT?

The ‘Player Stats’ menu is the place to go to see the ‘per 90’ metric in action.

Most of the tabs that subscribers can see, from ‘Goal Threat’ to ‘Set Pieces’ to ‘Expected’, are compatible with our new tool.

Members can also filter by home and away matches or sort by Gameweek ranges in conjunction with the ‘per 90’ checkbox.

The flat-track bully feature is also compatible in the usual manner, as we have illustrated below:

I like to keep an active bench so that I can change my formation depending on form and fixtures. My 4.5 defenders enable me to go 3, 4 or on occasion 5 at the back.

      4-3-3 - defence: 7.5/5.5/5.5/4.5 (4.0 fodder)
      3-4-3 - defence: 7.5/5.5/4.5

Sure, the fourth defender in 4-3-3 could/should be an expensive one, 5.5-6.0, you're swapping the fourth mid and fourth defender, but I think there are some really nice 4.5 options that are, maybe not fixture proof, but playable every week. Same goes for the third defender in 3-4-3. I would go for three 6.0-8.0 strikers.

On paper, Lamptey is the obvious one. Brighton have tightened up, and he's so attacking. But, maybe closer to the start of the season he won't be an option. Then there are Fofana, Coady, White, Sieralta, Ayling, maybe someone from Brentford.

Most will say Palace here but their core squad is still strong enough and plus they've signed a good attacking player. They will sign more decent players.

Burnley don't spend so close fight for them. Same with Southampton, but they have a good manager.

Watford, Norwich will surely go down. Last spot will be Brentford or Burnley

Palace. Squad is geriatric, half of them out of contract and only have money to fill the squad with nobodies. Newcastle also don't invest. Watford's looks chaotic as usual but that's just an aside.

Filling the squad with nobodies makes me smile.

Palace like Burnley have done very well doing just that - long list of solid pros who have done an admirable job which is very un FPL but highly EPL. It's an old fashioned way of doing it but 200 million on squad players as per Brighton and Villa isn't always the best approach.

Ignore most of out of contract situation. Only 3 players relevant there - The others put together 40 appearances in the season. Only Ward Cahill and Townsend are relevant and then as bench players - that's the weakness.

CPL, Burnley, Southampton most at risk from last year's teams.

Palace are in the danger zone - amusingly they have just cancelled their first preseason - I assume that's because they have too few to fill the bench

If we fail to sign up at leats two of Cahill Ward and Townsend I will be very nervous indeed. When AFCon comes up we could be unbelievably short.

Decent first team still and comfortably mid table for two seasons so not a slam dunk call.

Assuming Son is your main differential and you want to keep; Maybe Diaz -> 5.0 and upgrade Toney to a 7.5 (can hot swap 7.5 strikers through season).
Or Diaz -> 4.5 and change King -> Toney if you like him

The theme I've been noticing over the last 3 seasons & this recent euro tourny, is that def can be value.
During last season's turmoil, 160+ points was a fair mark for mids & fwds, while top notch defenders reach that every season, but generally for less $, so I'm sold on your gk, def & mid. If King gets minutes, then he's a sound pick as a 2nd budget fwd from a lower ladder side.
Toney is all the rave because of last season's results, but a lot relies on Brentford hitting the marks of recently promoted sides like Leeds, Norwich's Pukki, Sheffield Utd & Wolves.
Are Brentford capable of promotion seasons like that band, to give Toney the influence we're praying for ?
Thanks to covid & other aspects, for two season's in a row, a bench of 2+ has been an advantage.

How did United go in positive fixtures last season?

MBP makes a good point about how and why United struggled in positive fixtures in defence. The moment Maguire and other central defender didn't get a defensive double axis in front goals happened.

Held Shaw for a large chunk of last season at 5.0 It was an okay investment no more. He'll need to be way better to make more than 5.5 value.

Personally think AWB is likely to be equal value or close to.

His attacking output has stepped up year on year and had 5 assists and 2 goals last time. Hard to say if he'll again get more minutes but given possible week 1 uncertainty reckon he's as good a call.

One of the best attacking fullbacks in the league from the team that can keep a clean sheet for 5.5 is just too good to pass. He should've been at least 6.0, same as Chilwell.

Yeah but United will not keep many clean sheets. And the GK situation is not good imo. They will sign Varane but we have no idea how good he will be when paired up with Maguire. Unless and until we sign a very solid CDM, don't see us keeping many clean sheets

Well, AwB is not blame for that, I haven't checked the stats, but he's good defensively. Varane should have pace and be decent pair for Maguire. I doubt he can be worse than Lindelöf. Therefore I expect MU to improve and I am happy to have Shaw. But hey, this is a game. For those who think Shaw is bad option his high ownership should be very pleasant surprise 🙂

He's not a bap option of course.

What's the problem?!? If you think that those two most owned players are bad fpl options, you have easy way to gain advantage from beginning. Simply don't get them and get better team (supposing you have balls to do it)! And those who think the opposite can have also AwB for example.

        1. pingissimus
          • 5 Years

Did I say there was a problem? Did I say he was a bad pick? Did I say I wasn't considering him? Read back.

As it happens I'm unlikely to start with Shaw. Not a question of balls - just don't see that United and England are similar propositions and that there is potentially better value elsewhere.

Held him for a good part of last season at 5.0. Happy enough - might have paid more. Not a cert I would have done on performances and returns.

I've said it once and i'll say it again he's like another Digne, overhyped. Not saying he's a bad player but from an FPL viewpoint that's how I see it. AWB is as good of an option then he is and I personally don't take Euros form/attacking positioning into FPL because different role, tactics, teammates, etc.

Clean sheets are still your bread and butter for fpl defenders and Utd just don't keep enough of them.

I am going to make it my mission to spread the word Real Madrid. Barcelona and Juventus need our help.
They would never have had a problem if:
    1) They were not to be held to ransom by unscrupulous players asking for money that quite exceeds their worth,
    2) Their territory was not invaded by the made up clubs like Man City and PSG.
    3) They did not have to give up their TV money to minnows in La Liga.
    4) They were not sold down the river by the English "big 6" when it came to a truly fair European Competition.
    5) The nerve of the EPL to financially drastically outperform them due to unfair market share.
    6) Their Presidents were honest and wanted to command the power they deserved.
    7) Teams loke Man U stealing their prized assets like Veran for poultry somes, simply because they have no money.

I think it only fair, EUFA bail them out so they can recover and be the fine example to all.
I hope this post does not go unnoticed and we all rally together and help them.

I agree, Son is being rather overlooked atm. It's still possible to have a good squad with TAA, Salah, Bruno & Son. You just need to have faith in some budget 6-7m forwards

Re Martinez, I think it is going to be very hard to duplicate a great performance in consecutive seasons. I'm not saying it won't happen, but when was the last time a GK had back-to-back seasons accruing 160+ points for each season?

I’d give Villa 11-13 cleansheets this season compared to 15 last year

That’s going to bring Marty down by almost 20 points including Baps

Not sure he’ll save a penalty again either - despite him saving 3 in an international game shootout, penalty saves are very rare in the PL

If he doesn’t save a pen you’re looking at 20-30 points less this season easily imo, coupled with the 1.0 rise it’s too much a squeeze on him

Meslier is a guy for this season imo

Leeds should at least match their 11 cleansheets from last season, and could even go up to 12/13+

He makes an awful lot of saves too, so even if he doesn’t get a penalty save again I think he can go 10-15 points better than last season

      0.5 cheaper than Marty too…

He’s also basically a child prodigy - to be doing what he’s doing at 21 is incredible in that position

      Donnarumma-esque

        Agreed

Question for me is whether he beats Ayling for comparative value -assuming that Bamford and Raph are in there. Coming round - slowly - to your view that Bam needs a slot.

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years

Yeah my thinking with Ayling at the minute is I can’t actually play him every week and therefore by the laws of FPL can 100% guarantee he’ll be on my bench in the week he unexpectedly pops up with a goal or assist (a la Soucek with his brace away to Palace after weeks being dormant)

Meslier neatly sidesteps that, and gives some Martinez level save points in a defence that improved steadily as the season wore on (Villa to be fair deteriorated defensively as the season wore on I think), for 0.5 less

I think Meslier’s age gives him some genuine opportunity for development too - at his age the improvement he can make is pretty significant, could be an absolute worldie of a keeper

I've ruled out Emi on price and on the basis on the second part of the season.

Pickford is the other I might just invest in if I ignore 4.5. Allergic to Digne so that is ruled out and can see Everton potentially doing nicely. But Rafa could go really badly wrong if they get off to a sticky start - Goodison would be a bear pit.

        *Leeds actually kept 12 CS

Meslier got benched for Casilla for the final two games so he missed out on about 10 extra points there

I am currently on a), but weighing up b) as an option.

    a) Sanchez, Meslier, VVD
    b) Sanchez, Steele, TAA

I feel that the nice rotation between Meslier and Sanchez can make up for any potential shortfall in going VVD over TAA.

Interested to know any thoughts. I also have Robbo and Salah. I fancy their starting fixtures so happy with a treble up from the off. Thanks!

At start, I would prefer to go with B. You can switch to A on WC if Van Dijk is able to score well.

Not sure that Steele is best use of Brighton slot but it's not a bad call.

It's been an age since Liverpool have been a cs force. It's not simply a question of VVD as you need to go back quite a long way into the season before last to find cs figures. Not convinced here that the double up is worth it without predictable cs.

It’s more the cover for Sanchez as to why Steele is there. I’m not fussed with filling it with ‘live’ Brighton players if I’m honest.

I like to start with a strong defence as it is easier to downgrade there if I need to upgrade elsewhere.

There is a complete blank at RB if you ignore Kelly. Ferguson - amusingly promoted to 4.5 - has now caught the Achilles epidemic and is beginning to feel like another Wickham. We might see him sometime in the new year but no saying really.

Ward is in fact still a solid performer and the type we need to manage the transition. Probably a bench option but happy enough to see him start.

The consensus among Palace fans is I believe that things are much less bleak than they appear when you look at the first team and that it'd be a mistake to bring in too many new faces but that it should be done over 2/3 windows.

Where we need definitely transfers now are at CB, central midfield and possibly up front. In each case we're looking at strong bench options primarily. Afcon could be awkward - especially if Olise decides to be Nigerian.

The FdB parallel is the biggest worry - among a good few others - for me not least because of the early fixture run

But he is apparently fairly pragmatic and fell out of favour at Nice and in France because of that pragmatism. Sounds like a reasonable fit 🙂

I suppose you are marginally more likely to get 2 off the bench with two 4.5 mids than if you had at least one 4.5 defender, who might get a clean sheet.

Otherwise it does look good on paper. I don't see Stones and Shaw playing in GW1, though? Think its only ~30 days away and they need three weeks off after the Euros?

I know if I went with a back five its the first place I would go for funds when I wanted to get on a bandwagon in midfield or up front.

The officials at the Euros showed a much lighter touch as regards VAR, with the result that far fewer decisions were reversed after VAR reviews. None of the dodgy penalties and red cards for comparatively trivial offences awarded when referees reversed their decisions following VAR reviews that we saw so many of last season in the Premier League.
They also much quicker in checking for offsides, and didn't spend ages drawing vertical lines down from players' armpits.

Is it possible that the Premier League might copy this, with the result that we might see fewer penalties, fewer red cards, and fewer goals disallowed for offside this season?

    1. Andy_Social
      • 11 Years
      2 years, 8 months ago

Yes, I very much hope so. As well as far better on-pitch flow, there was so little post-match discussion/dissection compared to the PL last season. It's not as if paring it down led to more inaccurate decisions. It was just a far far better experience, showing that the problem wasn't with technology per se, but the use of it.

    2. pingissimus
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 8 months ago

Suspect/hope that having a crowd will change things somewhat in the speed of decisions. This season - crossed fingers - won't be a television only affair and it's going to be tougher to spend ages on decisions with the immediate audience actually in the ground.

    3. diesel001
      • 7 Years

Is there an issue with offsides? I suspect that at the Euros, the officials were drawing lines, just they were much better and faster at it.

It wasn't light touch, just more competence.

        • 4 Years

        Agree with this.

I also think it helped that they didn’t televise the replays/line drawing to the TV audience. That way, we just trusted that they had made the right call and the game went on.

    4. Deulofail
      • 8 Years
      2 years, 8 months ago

I hope not. A 'light touch' is not objective. And I would like to see what's happening on screen. People already cry conspiracy when we can see the lines. Imagine if they start applying light touches and revealing later that things were actually offside, for instance.

I am more concerned with the number of times in the Premier League that VAR asks the ref to look at the screen and award a penalty when the contact was minimal and sometimes initiated by the attacking player, or to award a red card for incidents that that look far worse in slow motion than they do at normal speed and which are then overturned by the appeals committee after the match. What's objective about these? It's a matter of speed and interpretation, and I prefer the way VAR was used at the Euros.
I also wish that refs would award penalties when players are fouled, man-handled or have their shirts pulled but stay on their feet, and not when attacking players initiate the contact themselves and then go down needlessly when they would not do so in any other part of the pitch.
And I'm not convinced that VAR is sufficiently accurate to be absolutely certain that lines drawn from parts of the player's body after long examination by VAR do actually correspond to the exact microsecond that the ball was passed to them. Decisions that take several minutes to decide are not 'clear and obvious'. There should be a small margin of 'umpire's call' as in cricket. VAR in the Euros may possibly have been allowing this margin, and if so it certainly resulted in speedier decisions and far fewer complaints.
You don't see the VAR pictures moving backwards and forwards over a number of frames like you do in cricket. Instead they seem to just adjust lines on a single frame without apparently looking at the preceding or subsequent frames, but can they be certain that this frame corresponds exactly with the instant that the player passing the ball made his last contact with it?

There isn't a dsingle word in here that I disagree with. I'd be very happy if they put tou in charge.

I'd also add the ability to book a player for oversimulating for a penalty even if it was actually a foul.

Was part of it not that play continued while VAR looked at stuff and only intervened when needed?

And decision made by the ref were assumed correct unless VAR interrupted?

Seems like PL would stop and make an event if the VAR review - like the third umpire in cricket.
Maybe if it happens in the background people won’t notice as much.

VAR 'won't penalise trivial things' in Premier League next season

Benefit of doubt for attacking sides now restored.
"The toenails and noses that might have been offside last year won't be next season," said Riley.
Riley estimates 20 goals were disallowed last season by using "quite forensic scrutiny".

Beautiful. Definitely doesn't feel fair that Nike create this kit with them but Chelsea get... that.

Feel certain Palace will come up with something you can borrow and make a Chelsea thing 😉

(There was actually a really ace kit doing the rounds on the boards that people were getting excited about but it turned out to be the brainchild of a fan.)

Not going to complain, it'll probably save me a fair bit if I can just buy the kits from Palace instead and glue a Chelsea badge on it 😉

Like it, very similar to my current starting team except I’m thinking to take a punt on buendia over saka for the first 3

90% same as most drafts. Saka is uncommon but for no good reason. You'd want to start Targett as he only has 3 games before it gets tricky for Villa. Personally, I'm benching Shaw v Leeds GW1.

      Yeah I like it.

I think Coufal is a really nice option at 5.0.

    Salah, Bruno, Raphinha, Gundo
    Watkins, Toney, Antonio

    Meslier, Fofana, Gilmour, Manquilo

i know rotating gk's are not most popular option but im looking to maximize green fixtures as much as i can

Just in case you haven't found it Ragabolly seems to have outdone himself with his team planner over at LiveFPL

The only downside I see is that the default captain appears to be Lacazette.

Just started to play with it. This time around I will surely be clicking that link to support his site.

Fofana and White (Arsenal) looks decent to me.
