Sleeper

Can Matt Doherty recapture his best FPL form under Nuno Espirito Santo?

The ‘Sleeper’ series makes a welcome return to the Fantasy Football Scout pages this summer.

In these articles, we assess the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players who failed to live up to former glories last season.

First up, Matt Doherty (£5.0m).

With Nuno Espirito Santo now in the Tottenham Hotspur hotseat, we assess whether or not the Republic of Ireland international can bounce back as an FPL asset this season.

2018/19: FPL Record and Stats

  • Goals: 4
  • Assists: 7
  • Clean sheets: 8
  • FPL points: 144 (3.8 per match)

Under Nuno at Wolves in the 2018/19 campaign, no defender took more shots than Doherty (46).

The Ireland international was also an ever-present for the Molineux side that season, which underscored the trust his manager had in him and Nuno’s fondness for a settled starting XI.

Above: Defenders in 2018/19 sorted by total attempts

Only Cardiff’s Sean Morrison (128) had more than Doherty’s 110 penalty-box touches.

The then Wolves man led all defenders for shots in the box (40) and big chances (nine), too.

Doherty also had more shots on target (17) than any other player in this positional bracket, with the right wing-back notching four goals.

Those outstanding shooting stats were not quite matched in the creativity stakes but nevertheless, only six defenders laid on more big chances than Doherty (nine) in 2019/20. The Irishman totalled seven assists over 35 starts.

He also topped the defenders’ ‘expected goal involvement’ chart in 2018/19, with his xGI of 8.56 putting him narrowly ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold (8.16).

Think I'm gonna start with Rudiger and switch to Shaw in GW2

i don't like the planned GW2 transfer, I think it often forces early WC.

My view is set up for first 2-3 weeks (even if it means taking a less than ideal fixture or potential no show on the chin). Ideally roll first transfer and set up for mini wc in GW 3 with a hit.

I'm hoping Rudiger is fairly locked in for GW1 with Thiago Silva going to the finals of the Copa America. He was being playing regularly under Tuchel as well. Dont know Reece James situation otherwise would prefer him. But yeah planned transfers don't usually go well so I'm still on Shaw right now but still thinking about Rudiger.

Thoughts on starting with Mane + Salah?

They have gotten really long summer breaks. VvD will also be back. I think Pool could be the strongest starters of the new season. Going Salah + Mane + TAA could be the perfect way to capitalize.

I might not do it on FPL but in FanTeam where Mane is 10.0m, I'm quite likely to go there I think.

I’m going to be pessimistic. Van Dijk won’t just return to his best. It’s a long long recovery still. TAA had that injury, pretty tough one and we haven’t really seen Trent come back from an injury like that. Yeah Mane at 10m for fan team is worth it.

Not worth it in FPL for sure. Mane is too expensive and Bruno is needed for captaincy.

Although I'm considering TAA + Robbo double up for FPL.

Most are going to have 32.5m of Liverpool already in a lot of weeks with Mo x 2 & Trent…

I’m not bullish enough about them to Jack that up to 44.5m by adding Mane at this point

      Maybe in the right DGW

This site does trend template, but I like to think that I keep an open mind to other approaches and can see some value in differentials.

Last year, nobody started with Kane + Son and they started off insanely hot.

This year, I'm trying to figure out who that might be and I can see:

Mane, Havertz, Torres and Son potentially bursting out of the blocks.

Son is 10m which I think is very fair pricing and he has 3 great fixtures after City and extended rest. New manager bounce too. I think he's overlooked.

You want to captain a premium player a reasonable amount of times. With that combo you only have one captaincy option.

When you want another captain option, you just switch Mane to another captain option. You don't have to keep him forever.

My only problem with Son is that it would force me to move to a 4-4-2 . Getting rid of someone like DCL in a 3-4-3. Spurs have City , Chelsea Arsenal in their first 6 while Everton have 6 great fixtures. Not so sure Son is going to outscore someone like DCL in the first 6.

I mean, I read gossip today saying Nuno wants to play a front two - Kane and Ings. That would surely adversely affect Son.

On the flip side could it benefit Son? if Kane is playing deepish like he has been and allows room for Son to make his dashing runs forward, could possibly lead for assists to Ings and space for Son himself maybe

You're right the fixtures do lean toward Everton and DCL has been known to start the season well (last season) but I also remember Son's big hauls last year as well. Different manager and circumstances now of course, and I guess also depends on your WC strategy also

From what you read in this comments section, apparently most new managers are bad, even when the prior manager was sacked for doing a poor job himself. They hardly ever bring new, fresh ideas that improve their teams and players. In fact, when they have a top player that had a good season last year, they usually ruin him. Is that right?

No. I rate Nuno as a manager - Levy is the problem. I think Vieira is a decent choice but will be undone by the club's lack of resources. FWIW I was very excited by Tuchels arrival last season.

Rule of thumb is, that you need to get 0,67 pts per million in a long run (to reach season average slightly above 60 points per GW).
12,0 player needs to consistently deliver 8 points per game. I can see Mane struggle to reach this threshold. Overpriced unfortunately.

I like it, I've had Mo, Mane & Trent in my initial draft since the game launched and not shifted yet. Way things stand Mane has the armband v Norwich too and pretty sure it will stay that way although I appreciate there is plenty of time for things to change between now and the GW1 deadline.

I'm thinking of goin balls to the wall myself with Salah, Mane and Jota. It's silly but can do a shuffle around over a gameweek or 2. Lpools defence should Def be better this season, I still just remem the high line from last season when VVD and Gomez were fit and Leeds and Villa put 10 goals past them early doors. Mane and Salah rested this summer and think Jota mite start if Firmino a late comer backer after the Copa. Pre season will b disrupted for lotsa teams with summer tournaments and it's a lottery to know who will kick off well. Wijnaldum will prob be a big loss for lpool too. Lotsa unknowns.

Chelsea scored 25 goals in 19 league games under Tuchel

Havertz started 7 of those 19, and 11 of the last 20 in all completions…

I kind of understand where folks are coming from, but the data is just not there to support him as a pick at the minute

GW7 fixture swing maybe, or if we see something in pre season

      1. Athletic Nasherbo

I agree but I think greater context is required.

        1. Tuchel joined a team struggling at both ends mid season
        2. Werner
        3. Havertz found his place in the team and the position come the end of the season
        4. Havertz has had an excellent Euro’s
        5. Full pre-season for Tuchel, albeit with less of his starting 11 but even so has more time to implement his ideas. The Chelsea of the last ten games of the season markedly improved on playing forward and creating chances. (Stats on this?)
        6. Palace - lots of experienced players leaving, lots of new young and prem inexperienced players now coming in.

Yep all have to be considered, but the way I thought of those personally was:

          1. They scored more under Lamps (33 in 19) than Tuchel (25 in 19)
          2. Will still be Werner
          3. He started 11 of the last 20 in all competitions and 2 of the last 6 league games… that’s not finding a regular place in the team for me
          4. International football is close to irrelevant whether good or bad (the Karel Poborsky effect)
          5. Chelsea scored 15 and conceded 11 in his last 10 league games (and were fifth in the table over that spell) - not stellar offensively or defensively
          6. Single gameweeks are generally far too unpredictable - GW1 even moreso

When we have such a visible fixture swing in GW7 plus all the downsides above, personally he’s too risky for me

But if he starts 5 of the first 6 and is looking good, and Chelsea are scoring more goals than they have ever done at any stage up under Tuchel to date, then he could be a possibility GW7

Eye test actually says Havertz is a good pick. He's playing OoP, he was decisive in the CL final, he played well for Germany. It looks like he's on course to have a big season.

But I sort of agree on being wait and see and Chelsea's fixtures are really not great until GW7.

It’s all ifs and buts, the eye test also showed him resting himself on the bench getting 2 returns in Chelsea’s last 7 league games, and 4 league returns in total under Tuchel

I wouldn’t have the risk appetite for it personally at all as things stand - especially when combined with Chelsea’s league attack under Tuchel (25 goals in 19 games or 15 goals in his last 10 league games)

We’ll get more information through pre season though, and through GW1-6 too, if things went his way he could end up a good pick

Had a quick shufti but there doesn't appear to have been a particularly marked difference in Chelsea chance creation last season when you break the season down into thirds. There was a slight uptick towards the end but probably within variation.

Think the point I'd put most weight on is full pre-season but that's diluted by so many Euros absentees.

Trying not to pay too much attention to the Euros but Havertz looked great in an in and out German side.

Have to agree, we are spoiled for choice in midfield so to choose someone who
        1. May not play every game, rotational risk
        2. Has tough opening fixtures
        3. Is priced above other similar options
        wouldn't entice me.

So Borussia Dortmund have turned down Chelsea's informal player-plus-cash proposal for striker Haaland, and Man City linked with Lewandowski.
That's two transfers I'd love to see happen for FPL purposes, would shake up this Mo/Bruno template for a start.
More so Haaland mind you, with pep being Pep.
But still, I like more premiums, as it spreads out ownership % a bit more

I don't think Haaland is going anywhere until next year. Are the Lewandowski rumors anything concrete? It just seems like speculation since City need a striker and he's one of the world's best. Don't think Bayern will sell.

Someone on Reddit tallied up what Lewandowski would have scored in FPL with his season last year

I think he was on close to 300 points by GW25 and would have finished on around 350 points from a 34 game season (where he missed 5 games)

Him at city just would not be pretty at all

Yep, Werner was a great example of exactly that

Although Werner got 28G 7A whereas Lewa got 41G 7A so was on a different planet to even Bundesliga Werner

Plus Werner only had that one standout season (in the 6 before that he scored 16, 13, 21, 6, 3, 4)

Lena has scored 29 or more bundesliga goals in 5 of the last 6 seasons which is just 😆

Yeah Ings needs to look out for number 1 here big time

Could you imagine if he breaks his leg or ruptures his Achilles or ACL in his next tackle, it could cost him millions as it would impact his ability to pass a medical/sign pre contract agreements etc

He’s in the (financially) highest risk stage he’ll ever be in & will surely be tough for him to perform 100% in training, let alone matches with that going through his head

Seeing Bruno in most of these drafts and I’m really not convinced.
His end of season form was poor and what I saw of him in the Euros didn’t suggest an upturn in form.
Based on that 12m looks over priced to me, but the likes of Son/Havertz opens up so many options elsewhere.

As someone who thought Salah looked like treacle in pre season of 2020 and was then burnt by the Leeds opener, I'd perhaps just start with Bruno given structure/captaincy/ownership and then switch him if the masses are wrong. Long season ahead and the value will present itself as we go along

    7. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      • 14 Years
      2 years, 8 months ago

Bruno could flop and get 10 points from the first 5x gameweeks… but so could any player

But Bruno could also do what he’s done to date (48 returns in 51 appearances), and not many players:

      (a) Have the structural strings to their FPL bows to do that type of damage - i.e. play for an elite attack, be nailed, have an eye for goal, be creative, take DFK’s, take penalties etc etc

      (b) Will be among the most, if not the outright most, owned players in the game - which will utterly destroy you in the event of points being scored

The main thing is to back yourself

If you don’t have a reasonable doubt that Bruno is overpriced and poor value, you can easily start without him

But if you have even a reasonable doubt (on either front), you have to ask yourself - do you feel lucky punk?

He's a strong contender/placeholder for many reasons. My pick of the Manu players. Will have had full rest and a good pre-season, so you would hope should be back to max potential gw1. Easy to downgrade and gives time to assess how other players such as Son, Havertz, et al will fare with mins, new mgt, etc.

      Strategically sound imo.

    9. Wrong Captain Choice - Ag i…

True but the problem is that most other people will have Fernandes. If he does well and you do not have him you could be really chasing. I agree he is overpriced though.

Last season there were plenty of times when I did not have Fernandes and he would get those soft pens out of nowhere and 3 bonus. Suddenly my rank was in trouble. Or at best stagnating.

The beauty about owning Fernandes is not only ownership it is the fact that he is on pens. It is likely Sancho will win a lot MORE pens this season and he should be more of threat from open play since the opposition will have Sancho to worry about. .
Plus if worst comes to the worst and Fernandes is not doing his stuff you can downgrade him to all players bar Salah.

It depends if you think the likes of Son under Nuno will fire or not. Plus how will Nuno set spurs up?

My (potentially misguided) hunch is that his strength and one touch finishing style is going to transfer well to the premier league, and that he’ll have no bother getting 10+ goals against bottom half sides, and will suprise the odd complacent top half side

50% goal involvements means we basically need Brentford to score 35-40 goals & Toney will be an FPL darling

Even if they only score 30 he should still be viable…

And if they happen to score 40 or more??

Then it’ll be Toney The Tiger Time

    Sanchez
    TAA, Digne, Shaw, Lamptey
    Salah, Fernandes, Mahrez, Buendia
    Antonio, Watkins

    Foster; Ayling, Gilmour, Obafemi.

Quite like this 4-4-2. Can't think of another player that I really really want. Raphinha looks great value but I don't think I need to start with him. Will likely come in for Buendia after his favourable fixtures.

    Varane to MUFC

Varane is a fast CB, if he comes to United then I expect them to play higher up the pitch. At the moment they can't play that way due to having two slow CBs.

We could see alot of goals early on. Pogba could be good value if he replaces Rashford on the left. There's a possible double up on him and Bruno.

    Any thoughts?

You get 100% set piece coverage with Bruno & Shaw - that’s the route I’d prefer at the minute

I’d like Varane to sign I think he’ll help shore up the defence a fair bit

Anyone else spot that Buendia took and scored a pen at Norwich last season?

Pukki had almost all of them and there were a couple of others who nipped in with one but it does show he is a penalty taker and Villa are woefully short there and Grealish does pick up a lot of fouls ....

      Yeah that’s my hope too

I have to go with Buendia instead of Grealish or Watkins for budgetary reasons, so him getting pens would be unreal

The more I (over)think about it the more Bamford over DCL seems to make sense. Everton fixtures are nice and all but Leeds were a much better attacking force than Everton last season.

    1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      • 14 Years

Everton scored 18 goals in the second half of the season (only Wolves with 15, Sheffield United with 10, and Fulham with 11 scored less)

And DCL has 5 goals in Everton’s last 27 games

I also don’t think their fixtures are excellent - they’re away to brighton, Villa and Leeds in the first 5 weeks (all are defensive darlings of the FFS boards, and rightly so), with Burnley home completing their first 5 - another defence that can frustrate on their day

DCL is well capable of opening the season strongly - but I prefer Bamford

There’s enough there that I can be comfortable with the logic behind the decision, the outcome will be what it will be

Would love some thoughts on this.

    Meslier, Foster
    TAA, Digne, Coufal, Ayling, Lamptey
    Bruno, Salah, Grealish, Torres, Raphinha
    Watkins, Welbeck, 4.5

    Digne could become Shaw.

Deciding to do Meslier over Sanchez - this is close so I’d rather the 5.0 so I have more flexibility with keeper moves - I assume I won’t get the right one.

Really like the value of the mid-price mids. Might end up with 2x 7.5s but at the moment it’s 7.0 and 8.0.

Welbeck is an early season punt, but the plan is to play 4-5-1 mostly.

Would avoid the double Leeds defence -- locks you out of a second Leeds attacker which you'll probably want when their fixtures improve.

Yeah that’s a good point. I think I’m more likely to want to get rid of Ayling than Meslier in that case - lots of 4.5 value in defense.

Maybe the first team I’ve seen with 14 players likely to get full games and no throwaways.

I’d be scared of Chelsea rotation so it makes sense to spread the money to cover rotation.
Sterling is an interesting one - will his form transfer back to the PL? Will Pep care how his Euro was?

Not sure id want double Chelsea when they finished the season so poorly under Tuchel

In their last 10 league games they were fifth, with a goal difference of only +4 (only 15 goals scored and 11 goals conceded)

      1. I Member

They were fighting on three fronts. "Poorly" is a bit harsh. Tuchel transformed a mediocre team under Lampard into one of the best sides in Europe.

          • 14 Years

Dunno mate, they scored a lot more goals under lamps (33 in 19) vs Tuchel (25 in 19), and under Tuchel they dropped points to Wolves, Brighton, Southampton, Leeds, Man Utd & were beaten by Villa, Arsenal, West Brom & Leicester

I think Pep gifted then the champions league with his DM-less team... And cup matches don't pay the bills in FPL either

Plus the sheer amount of options they have, id rather sit back and see what they do GW1-6 before the good fixtures kick in GW7

My hunch is they rode a new manager bounce for all it was worth, but if not, GW7 is a safe time to jump on

Digne maybe an injury doubt so keep an eye on that.

Of these three who is the worst option to start with?

    A) Digne

Key question for me: How much would I actually captain Bruno!

If I captain him often then he is worth it. If I would go mostly with Salah then I could do so much with that extra money.

    I could move:
    from Bruno & Gilmour
    to Havertz & Grealish.

That is some awesome depth. I have to see if I have the nerve to do it.

    Would I ever captain Havertz?
What if Bruno is still exhausted?

Think my next draft will be a single premium draft and see how I feel about auto Mo captain for the first run.

Looking at possible Nacho in week 3 which is the first week when Mo doesn't look natural. Felt quite happy captaining Nacho last time.

Son is another possibility week 3 and 4 (another poor one for Liverpool) and quite reachable if you spread funds.

Hey it's YOU again! Haha. We seem to be analyzing the same stuff!!

Great point on Nacho...I had him in my first draft but have gone away from him. That is a mistake and I currently sit with Watkins & Antonio, so I will likely go for Nacho instead of one of those.

I totally disagree on Son though...I am staying far clear of him this year. In fact I'm not touching any Spurs all year even if they go on a purple patch. Kane if he stays will be far overpriced and drop so deep, and Son is overpriced too. You would definitely have to captain him to make it worthwhile and that is a big risk.

        1. pingissimus
          • 5 Years

          Yep

Son is a reach and in some ways he's a placeholder for Mahrez Sancho Havertz - easier to pick the most expensive and work your way down is the way I see it.

Simply looking at captain choice week 4 is the first stumbling block with no Bruno. I take Leeds to be a positively bad fixture for Liverpool.

That is the most important thing to consider: What will be your upcoming stretch of captains. That is all that really matters in this game. It means that you make a contrary point to me though: I should keep Bruno because I would captain him at least 3 times in the first 8 weeks. Hmmmm.

Assuming you have Salah you will likely need a captaincy option on gw3.

Meant to hold off longer but here's next draft - this time single premium.

    Meslier 4.0
    TAA Shaw Digne Lamptey Rose
    Mo Grealish Barnes Buendia Mahrez/Son
    Nacho Bamford 4.5

A few names in there that are up in the air but mostly at price points with easy switches. Son over Mahrez would mean losing a 5.5 at the back probs and 4.5 keeper

Single premium limits captain choices but this looks quite okay.

    Mo -Norwich
    Mo - Burnley
    Nacho - Norwich
    Son - Palace

Oh I'll have a Kane variant too of course

Currently just having fun working my way through different set ups making use of the unlimited WC preseason. Think this is version 4

        1 - triple premium
2 - double premium plus Son
        3 - template
        4 single premium

Still need to have a look at BB squad and big at the back. Being quite methodical here and just working out what my strategy is this time - until I turn it upside with WC week 3 of course :-). Favourite so far is the double premium plus Son or this one.

My version has Greenwood+Raph over Barnes+Buendia
(Mainly because I have Watkins over Bamford too).

I really like this. Also 7 amazing attackers makes me feel like a 4.0 defender is more viable.

Greenwood is going to be a real temptation if we see white smoke rising from the correct chimney at OT - as would Cavani be.

Barnes I'm very keen on but no one is sacrosanct and double Villa and double Leicester may be overbold. But I do like all those assets individually.
