FPL team guide 2021/22 – Everton: Best players, stats and more

Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season continues with this preview of Everton.

The Toffees are another club under new management, with the departure of Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid precipitating Rafael Benitez’s arrival.

You can read more about the incoming Spaniard in our dedicated Scout Report.

Despite many lines from Ancelotti about a European charge last season, Everton only just scraped a top-half finish by finishing in 10th.

Having gone goal-crazy in the early part of 2020/21, Everton’s attacking output slowed down significantly though the Toffees were relatively sticky in defence.

Don’t forget that you can find official Opta team and player information on the Blues and every other Premier League side in our Premium Members Area, to help with your planning for Gameweek 1.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

Benitez’ Blues

Everton’s league position was followed closely by their ranks in defensive statistics:

Everton defensive statsTotalRank v other PL teams
Goals conceded4810th
Shots conceded50513th
Shots in the box conceded31212th
Shots on target conceded16111th
Big chances conceded7210th=
Expected goals conceded (xGC)50.711th

The Toffees kept a respectable 12 clean sheets under Ancelotti last season, the joint-fifth best record in the division.

But eight of those arrived in the Toffees’ final 15 fixtures and no Premier League club kept more shut-outs from Gameweek 25 onwards, so Benitez inherits a defence in decent shape.

A miserly backline is something we might expect under the new Everton boss. His all-time Premier League record saw the Spaniard’s sides concede at a clip of less than a goal per game, while averaging 1.53 goals per match.

“We will try to have a team that has balance. Balance means attack and defend, and be sure that you can compete against anyone.” – Rafa Benitez

      Tella what?

So hard to look past the Liverpool boys isn't it, 200 point potential from 7m is crazy however I've started with this the last couple of seasons and it's gone horribly! Henderson and Keane are a no from me.

      This leaves 0.5 ITB

Love the Tella pick, he's probably the player I'm most excited to see this season from my club, but he's a wait and see for me. At least at the beginning.

Watch whether Keane starts as the season opener draws near, EVE friend says if its a back four its going to be Godfrey and Mina at CB.

Arsenal have announced the signing of box-to-box midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga from Anderlecht.

    Stats 20/21
    Games: 33
    Goals: 3
    Assists: 2
    Yellow Cards: 8

I suspect he's a replacement to Xhaka? In which case, he comes in at 5.0.

Don't think bruno will do as well this season, shaw on bench gw 1 anyway as leeds love to score against the big teams. Mbuemo was one of Brentford's best players last year. Abraham changes to Toney if he isn't first choice or goes abroad.

To get this out of the way - why Sanchez with a backup non-starter?

Why not just Steele, or Foster with whatshisface?

        • 11 Years

I wouldn't have Steele (who's now 3rd choice anyway) - you'd be taking up 2 Seagull spots and you might want the likes of Lamptey, Dunk, Bissou and Welbeck later.
There are no 4m starters so Foster is at least as good as any.

I'll take my chances on that

People are afraid to double up on Brighton, so a triple up sounds crazy

The whole idea of Sanchez/Steele is if Sanchez is out you have a starting keeper

I'm happy to take my chances on that. If Brighton keep a CS and Welbeck score GW1, people will be clamouring to triple on Brighton, with assets so cheap and the next 7 fixtures so enticing.

For me, your draft is all good until I get to Pedro. Watford half too many strikers and I don't know how many minutes he'd get. I'd find another 0.5 for Welbeck or better 1.0 for Toney. Coufal for Cresswell would get you 0.5

Out of curiosity and not specifically FPL related. Is the Newcastle takeover on anybodies radar at all? Or do other fans literally not care?

Fair opinion, most toon fans would agree. We have been converted from optimists to pessimists over the last 10 years under Ashley!

I’d love to see Newcastle from their slumber & become a top 6/top 4 club, like back in the Bobby Robson days, and even further back to Keegan

The potential that club has, with its fans and stadium etc is off the charts if it had the right guys in charge

Definitely agree. It's really strange there is not more interest when he has reportedly been trying to seel for last 2-3 years. £300-350m seems cheap for a club considering the cost of players these days.

      1. Just me, isn't it? Or maybe others are anticipating him being rested GW1 and will change if he's confirmed to start.

      2. Jota's not a season-keeper. There are suggestions VVD won't be fit for the start - when he's back more might double up on Liverpool defence. There are suggestions Firmino might be rested GW1 too as he was in the final of the Copa A.

      1. One of the best attacking fullbacks in the league for just 5.5, and you don't want to spend many transfers on defenders, so getting him from the start seem sensible, even with him missing the gameweek one.

      2. It's just 0.5 difference, not a big deal, but it will be the case whether you want to pair TAA and Robertson, or TAA and Jota. Jota has his merits anyway, he'll play more other than not, could get something even coming from the bench. Getting the Liverpool fullback/winger double up could be a shrewd move, if Liverpool find resilience right form the start of the season.

Loving this team for a GW4 WC:

    Sanchez (Foster)
    TAA Shaw Digne Targett (Manquillo)
    Salah Fernandes Buendia (Gilmour, Bissouma)
    Cavani Calvert-Lewin Watkins

Four attacking backs, three attacking and creative mids, and three forwards in single striker systems. I think it’s a really good balance.

    Rip it apart 😆

    1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      • 14 Years
      2 years, 8 months ago

Nowt wrong with that if Man Utd start like a house on fire

Cavani too much for me though - you’re getting 100% set piece coverage and 35+ XGi from Shaw & Bruno

I’d be chucking in young Nacho instead of him as Leciester could seriously bang early on

Then personally I’d be trying to use the 1.0 along with a Targett downgrade to squeeze in Raphinha or Harrison

Leeds don’t respect fixtures - people expecting them to read the hymn sheet and stay quiet until GW4/5/6 are playing with fire imo

I’d also have Bamford instead of DCL at the minute, but that’s been done to death today lol, DCL has a lot going for him for sure & could smash

He’s just a bit flaky imo when you look at his/everton’s second half of the season

      1. ★Kuntheman★
        • 8 Years
        2 years, 8 months ago

I can see how Cavani could be too much, I definitely prefer him over Calvert-Lewin. I’m not completely buying Calvert-Lewin, if I knew Iheanacho was a starter I’d pick him over DCL every day of the week. I had a draft that had Martinez-Lamptey-Iheanacho over the current three of Sanchez-Targett-DCL.

Going without Raphinha bothers me! I like Leeds a lot. Just not sure if it’s a wise strategy to build around them with a GW4 wildcard planned, while they don’t respect fixtures I’m still not sure that they can outperform people with easier fixtures. Bamford is 100% a better pick than DCL, and Raphinha is insane value at 6.5. But do they fit into the chip strategy? Not saying they don’t, but do you think it’s worth chunking some budget out for them?

I think it’s Nacho’s time now to be honest

Could be totally wrong of course (wouldn’t be the first time lol)

But when he was a teenager at city he was given a run in the team at the end of the 15/16 season… he smashed in 5 goals in 4 games

He followed that up with back to back double returns at the start of the following season (at old Trafford, and vs Bournemouth)

At that point he was sitting on 8 premier league goals and 3 assists from his previous 6 starts and 2 sub appearances (and had already won the u17 World Cup golden ball before that)

He had tough completion at city with Kun there, and the signing of Jesus, and he probably stayed there a year or two too long - and then had a ravenous Jamie Vardy in front of him when he joined Leciester…

But he’s grown a lot, and I don’t think Rodgers can leave that kind of talent out any more - he looks more like a man now than a kid, I think he’s making a good play for Leciester’s main threat, and could eventually even end up at a mega club, he’s that good

I’m a huge Nacho fan, he was a young star at City and like you said, did amazing at the youth World Cup as well. He’s a really good striker. My concern is that with Barnes back, they can’t really play everyone, and Barnes is arguably Leicester’s best attacking player given Vardy’s regression at the end of the season.

If Nacho is nailed, he’s in my team. I just need a sign!

Utd being linked with Saul Niguez… might be just his agent agitating though

If Man Utd finish up his summer having signed Sancho, Varane & Niguez I will gladly doff my cap to Mr. Solksjaer & Co.

Still more likely the swap with Griezemann from Barce will happen. I think Liverpool fancy him too, to replace Wij.

I'm sure the Glazers will also accept the gratitude.

Just Varane and Sancho alone is an insane summer.

Saul is a great signing but I think they need an out and out defensive mid more than a player like him

Is there a way to compare two teams v/s another two teams in the season ticker?

Bit of an odd question for you all here. I am in a keeper league (through fantrax). Salah is listed as a forward. I get to choose one player to keep from my team last season. Would you choose Kane or salah?
…likely another close season between the two?

        Thank you!
        Think he’ll stay at Spurs?
As far as fantasy points go, he’ll likely score boat loads wherever he is…

Yeah the transfer is 50/50 - depends on Levy (sadly)

And yeah he'll score loads wherever he is

Yes. Kane is a different beast now.. Kane De Bruyne. He's a creator too now. Look at his G+A last season, monster figures

Also, in this league, I would keep Kane for $20.5 and Salah for $18.25
            Not a huge difference
