FPL Masterclass: Our panel’s top tips for Fantasy Premier League beginners

Our new FPL Masterclass series unites three of the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers around: two-time India champion Lateriser, seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar and five-time top 1,000 finisher Tom Freeman.

Between them they have 20 overall ranks in the top 10,000, nine of which were within the top 1k.

They’ll be chipping in with round-table Fantasy advice ahead of the start of 2021/22, with opinion on everything from tips for newcomers to their methodical process for captaincy selection.

We’re delighted that all three of these elite managers will also be writing for Fantasy Football Scout every week throughout the new season, with Tom additionally now on board as Deputy Editor.

Only subscribers will be able to read all of their articles in 2021/22; full-year memberships are now available for £20.

FPL price reveal and launch reaction from three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser 1

We begin with general advice for FPL managers ahead of the upcoming campaign, particularly those who are relatively new to the game – although there are plenty of helpful takeaways for the rest of us, too.

Fantasy newcomers can also read up on the basics in our ‘how to play’ guide here.

Tom said…

Giving yourself plenty of time to make decisions is so important in FPL. For example, knee-jerking your £6.5m forward out after he blanks on a Saturday night may not be the smartest move, especially if he has good fixtures to follow. Sleeping on a decision doesn’t necessarily lead to a better outcome but I find it helps, and remember, the player who scored big in the previous Gameweek won’t necessarily do the same in the next.

I’d also suggest building a basic set of custom tables in the Fantasy Football Scout Premium Members Area or use the existing templates if you don’t feel comfortable with that. I always use statistics to back up what I’m seeing on the pitch and this is an easy way of collating all that information in one place. However, the Season Ticker is perhaps the most important tool of all, as you can use it to plan future transfers and captain picks. Captaincy is one of the most important aspects of the game, so ensuring you have a good premium option each week is key.

I also like to spend a bit of time in pre-season researching the newly-promoted clubs. Here you’ll often find under-priced gems like John Lundstram and Patrick Bamford, who started out at £4.0m and £5.5m respectively. In the former’s case, you even got a midfielder who was classified as a defender! Maybe you don’t plan on starting with anyone from Norwich City, Watford or Brentford next season, but get that knowledge in place now, so you’re ready to move quickly once the season kicks off.

Finally, if you have a bad start and find yourself chasing, don’t panic. And if you’re still struggling heading into the final stretch, use calculated gambles rather than going all-in on differentials.

Zophar said…

Fantasy Premier League is, in my opinion, first and foremost a game of patience. It might sound off-putting as a new player but it’s what I’ve learnt over the years. It’s always tempting to be on the lookout for a shiny new toy or the player who banged in a hat-trick in the previous Gameweek but you have to remember that the points from last week are already gone and it’s not necessarily going to happen again in the future.

Faith in the players you pick is important: you picked them for a reason, they’re not going to score or assist every week and swapping them around means you end up chasing last week’s points.

You need to pick players for a longer period than one or two Gameweeks as transfers are precious. ‘Minus four’ for every hit is a lot of points and taking a hit every other week is definitely going to have a detrimental effect on your overall rank.

Fantasy Football Scout’s Season Ticker is one of the most useful tools around as it can rank which club have the best fixture run for a specified period and allows you to plan ahead for when to hop on or hop off a team’s assets. This allows you to plan your transfers in a structured manner rather than make kneejerk decisions.

Lateriser said…

My first suggestion to Fantasy Premier League rookies would be to point them in the direction of the Season Ticker in the Premium Members Area. Have a look at this tool, sort it for six to eight Gameweeks and plan your team for the mid-term.

Make sure that while constructing your team, you have short-term punts only in one to two positions at the most and have at least two premium players in your team. One mistake rookies often make is going for non-premium players as a captain too often. Do this only once in a while and stick to the premium players playing against bottom-half teams as much as possible.

If you can, look at the ‘captainable’ fixtures for the first six to eight Gameweeks and try covering the big hitters from those teams. What happens to me generally is that when I’m looking at the Season Ticker, the loose structure of my squad drops up in my head. Always have the Season Ticker open in another tab when you are building your team.

Other than that, my other pieces of advice would be that during pre-season, don’t spend your time over-tinkering. Once you are aware of all price points, you are more or less familiar with what kind of a team is possible.

Focus more on gathering information. Try finding out which defences were good last season and which attackers underperformed while paying close attention to manager quotes to give you an idea of player roles at the start of the campaign.

Only in the last seven days before the season starts is when you seriously tinker with your team because at that point, you will have gathered as much information as possible.

Don’t try to imitate any manager’s FPL style while you’re consuming content. Do your own research and over time, you will find your own approach which will be in sync with your temperament and risk appetite.

And most importantly, don’t forget to enjoy the game. Never forget that we are playing it for fun!

A slight dilemma I face is captain cover GW3.
Do you take on a Spurs asset from the word go or use a transfer in GW3 which would probably be a double transfer later on?

Going Son over Bruno gives you easy Salah/Son options for quite a long time. It does mean starting Son v City rather than Bruno v Leeds GW1 unless you phone in a transfer.

I don't mind the look of a Bamford v Burnley. 5-0 aggregate last season.
      Watkins also has Brentford.
Personally, I'll be picking what I see as the best fit and captaining from what I have.

Agree - I see Nacho as an easy 15 goals this year, and possibly could go to 20 (or more if he got a bit of luck), plus 5-10 assists, maybe more

The ability to generate returns was always there in spades

As a teenager at the tail end of his first season at city/start of his second season he just casually popped in 7G 3A in 8 consecutive appearances (6 starts 2 subs) 😆

Very excited to see him kick on this year

It was one preseason comment that Tifo Football made last season that eventually came true. They said they really wanted him to come good in 20/21 and felt it’d be his year. He had to wait for it but he delivered.

Yeah he was a genuine force of nature when he eventually got into the team - i don't see him going anywhere now that he's won that starting spot

Himself & Vardy were very reminsicent of when Rodgers had Suarez & Sturridge at Liverpool, just unplayable at times for opposition defences

Personally I think all the £4.5 - 5.0m mids are trash so would play 5 starting mids and only 2 forwards.

          1. Gabbiadini
            • 6 Years
            2 years, 9 months ago

4.5 mid options are better than any of the 4.5 fwd options so what's the logic here?

            1. LangerznMash
              • 7 Years
              2 years, 9 months ago

The £4.5 - 5.0m mids are all 3 pointers. A forward in this price range that gets a few goals and assists is more likely to surface. Obafemi or if Origi gets a transfer.

              1. Gabbiadini

Obafemi is amid a plethora of other attacking options.

I guess it comes down to which you think scores more out of £4.5m mid + Toney VS Raphinha/Buendia + Obafemi.

That is pending on transfers and pre-season.

      Sanchez/Bachman
      TAA Shaw/Digne

Surprised Bamford isn't higher owned, to be honest. Fixtures are obviously scaring people away, but we are talking about a high scoring Leeds team here.

Raphina being flavor of the day, less expensive and most not wanting to double up on Leeds. Not saying it is right but will reduce Bamford appeal.

He’s very well positioned to be top scoring forward in the game this year after Kane imo and should have a good attempt at 200 points

Pretty much fixture proof too even without penalties, can return in literally any game

                Yes, this is correct.
Granted, Everton's fixtures but definitely very much a reason for DCLs ownership being higher than Bamford.
Purely as a selection, Bamford gives me greater confidence hence I have the double up.

Any tips to care less about FPL during the season? I hate constantly checking results and my phone during weekends, feel addicted sometimes which i know most people are, what’s the best way to just step back slightly? Probably avoiding this website during games is a good start.

I think the biggest thing for me is to always remember that once the deadline passes you have no control anyway, so doesn't matter if you check your points live or look at everything on Tuesday. Enjoy the process, i personally love the discussion and focus on the next gameweek as soon as the deadline passes. This helps for sure.

As long as you don't have anything better to do, caring about FPL is not an issue.

For me it's just something I need to think about during office hours. If I'm not at work, I rarely think about FPL.

If you don't have mini leagues or any other important leagues, it should automatically reduce your interest. It's not like we are going to finish #1

I will drop Kane. Kane have to overperform massively to have a good points. He got most goals and most assists but we found that he stiill short two points from being the best FPL performer.

He is very good player tough. Just FPL rules make forward dont get points for CS and have only 4 points if they score a goal. Mids get 5.

Where have you been looking? This is a unique team, awa from the usual templates of either Trent or Trent and Robbo.
This site man, people moan about the template then when something different comes up still trash it.

OT: Personally would downgrade Foden and upgrade Toney to a 7.5 but can see points in this team. Just forget about City coverage for now

Some insane reaction on Twitter for Toney scoring in a per-season friendly. Some people acting as if he is going to win golden boot. Thankfully he is playing against Boreham Wood each week in the PL .

Have you watched the clips of his goals in the EFL? These goals just won't happen against Premiership defences and GKs. His penalties are cool but he won't get more than a couple all season.
If he blanks against Arsenal his price will immediately drop due to the high ownership.

      It’s always the way preseason.

Didn’t Andre Gray once get 10+ in preseason when he was at Burnley and there was fervour for him all over these boards.

Also I seem to remember Spurs having an insane record in preseason games one year in the 90s and the media reporting it a fair bit. They were then terrible.

      30 appearances + 10 goals + 5 assists + 0 YC / RC for £6.5m would be nice.

Excluding bonus, would equate to 125 pts.

Bamford's performance last season was freakish. There isn't a team coming up that is like Leeds this season.

125 pts exc bonus would be like Adams, Wood, Wilson, Ings last season. I would take that. If he does better than great.

Should have a good go at 35 appearances, 13 goals, 5 assists, 15 bonus - which is about 150 points - then he could land +/- 10% either side of that if he either has or hasn't got luck on his side

        I'd pencil him into the 135 - 165 range

But all he needs is an early arsenal lapse in concentration, or a mistake or bit of luck to score in GW1 & we could see a lot of those points being front-end loaded in the season

No doubt Brentford will go through at least one sticky patch where they'll struggle to score for at least a few games, GW6-9 looks like their toughest sequence so they'll be fighting tooth & nail to get some points (and goals) on the board before that run I'd imagine

Think he's easily capable of 10-ish goals against bottom half premier league sides

And could also easily surprise some of the more complacent top half sides if they turn up expecting a walk-over against Brentford

He's going to be one of the many fascinating stories to watch unfold this season

      1. LangerznMash
        • 7 Years

In the 1st quarter of the season the bottom half clubs he will play will be home against Brighton (good defence) and away to Palace + Wolves. The other 6 games are against top half teams.

        1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
          • 14 Years
          2 years, 9 months ago

Yup, if he nicks a goal vs Arsenal in GW1 with the adrenaline of the first premier league game/promotion, he has Palace in GW2 where he can easily score again and could be 7.0 by the time he plays Brighton after the international break in GW4, and Wolves after that GW5 - that's a really good set of fixtures for him I reckon

Personally loved his highlights reel, very reminiscent of Ruud Van Nistelrooy - everything is one touch & shoot - my hunch is that type of finishing style has a much higher chance of transferring up a league than a mazy runner/dribbler who is slaloming past 4 or 5 players in the championship every week (which just doesn't wash in the premiership)

His 50% goal involvement is the other big draw for me - basically we just need Brentford to score 35-ish goals (from 80 last year) & he's an instant FPL darling - even if they only score 30 and struggle he should still be viable... and if they score 40+?

Then it's Toney The Tiger Time 😉

But look at the end of the day he's a championship striker (although not many have been as lethal as him in that league, certainly not Bamford or Watkins) so there are question marks there. But I do think he's up there with Bamford & Watkins as being well able to give plenty of Premier League defenders nightmares

I must admit you make very good points and a strong argument for him. Between the two of us we have compiled the Pros and Cons of Toney.
The deciding factor for me if that due to his high ownership, even if he does score against Arsenal it is unlikely his price will rise, however how many people are going to use their one free transfer on a budget forward when other desirable players will also become present. On the flip side, if he doesn't score there is a high chance his price will drop. I'm not prepared to take that gamble on him scoring against Arsenal and potentially waste my one free transfer that week.

              • 14 Years

Personally his potential price movements have absolutely zero concern to me tbh - not even going to get into trying to speculate how players prices will move as there's zero reliable logic to that side of FPL - speculating how players will perform in single gameweeks is already a fools' errand... speculating on their potential price changes is a step too far for me 🙂

                • 14 Years
                2 years, 9 months ago

But with high ownership, tbf you would expect a blank vs Arsenal to be met with sales - maybe or mabe not enough to drop him to 6.4

But whether he's 6.4 or 6.6 doesn't change his ability to score against Palace, Villa, Brighton, Wolves i suppose is how id look at it

Using TV to dictate transfers is the road to ruin in FPL imo, very very dodgy strategy at the best of times (not that its doomed to failure either of course)

I agree speculating on a single performance is silly and if you are planning to stick with him for 6 - 8 weeks (like all the pro FPL tipsters recommend) then that is fair enough the price change won't affect you. However, for me he is still a 'no go' in that respect as like I said previously he only plays 3 bottom half teams in the opening quarter.

4 of last years bottom half teams in the first 5 gameweeks seems to have lined up well for him

Personally, he just looks like a quality player to me. He's fantastically built, fast, resourceful, the only question is how well Brentford can do to supply him with chances. Some clubs might play to cut him out of the game completely, and I don't fancy him to do well GW1 against a team that is unorthodoxically defensively solid.

On the contrary, imo. There's rumours of moving on both Lacazette and Nketiah. It would leave Arsenal with Auba and Martunelli, neither of whom play well centrally, so there would be a clear vacancy for Tammy there.

It's coming back into fashion but see no reason why to get ahead off the curve.

Willing to wait to see if they can turn the clock back 18 months - it's defo not all about VVD if you check the record. Also note that VVD has been better value than Robbo consistently if you hold for any length of time.

Other point is weeks 3 and 4 are both poor fixtures and it's super easy to switch a medium priced attacker into defence around week 5 if Liverpool defence is looking okay.

I think you have to combine a few strategies and take on board the advice from the pro tipsters.
              I am implementing the following:
              - selecting players with next 6 - 8 GWs in mind.
              - upside chasing (for captaincy picks)
              - 1 or 2 differential picks
              - utilise a good rotation pairing
              - patience (not taking kneejerk -4 point hits on transfers)

                Good summary

Have put together 3/4 different squads so far but just to see what is possible. I'm quite open to binning any of the "necessary" template choices if it gives me flexibility elsewhere.

6-8 weeks is my timeframe for initial selection - but the riddle for me is how to build sufficient flexibility for transfers in that time.

Thoughts on this defensively minded set to start the season

    Martinez (Meslier)
TAA, Robbo, Dias, Cresswell, (Lowton or another 4.5)
Son, Mount, Ward-Prowse, (Soucek & Dallas)
    Cal-L , Bamford and Watkins
Def and Forwards are reasonably set (Meslier downgrade to make cash ?)
    Mids can change a heap
Mount to Jota , W-P to Raphina or Beunida , Soucek to Sarr

        Defenders offer better value ?
Son isn't far from Salah/Bruno in premium stakes

Read the smiley next time perhaps 🙂

Also really rather doubt that Palace will regress 20 points or so to finish bottom from consistent safe by week 309 form because they have switched fringe players. Popular misconception is that they will be short of players this season. As it happens they had at least 6 players out all last season and quite often as many as 9 (mostly those who are no longer there - the squad will be no shallower this season in practical terms. They will struggle likely but that will be down to Vieira over Hodgson. Is he that bad? Might be.

Ah my apologies Pingi, I missed the obvious sarcasm.
Even if Palace's squad isn't as small as I thought, the amount of quality available in the squad certainly is miniscule.

              Minuscule is a tad harsh

There's the obvious Zaha (and Eze now) point but the squad has a good coverage of solid PL players who are garbage for FPL but actually decent for PL. One instance is Schlupp - a personal favourite of mine - he really does a job on a consistent basis.

Nervous here but still retain some hope - that's what preseason is for.

It is comical that Everton are going to have to start with 2 from Iwobi/Bernard/Townsend/Davies/Gray lol so bad. I originally thought DCL was underpriced at £8.0m but his xG is surely going to drop due to the reduced quality of players supplying him.

Everton is tending towards Digne being the main creator of a defensive side. I like this in FPL. I don't like the writing on the wall for DCL though. Maybe the crosses will be good for him? Doubt they'd be enough

With B I'm worried about having 4.0 defender fodder in addition to Brownhill. Gives me less flexibility for transfers and making subs. But maybe I need to be bold and go for B.

The problem with the FPL pricing is my team structure has ended with a 5.5M mid and 6.5M forward. Do people think Brentford will be porous defensively but get a reasonable amount of goals? Mbuemo and Toney seem the most likely at the price points to scored the most in the short term.

    1. schlupptheweek
      • 9 Years
      2 years, 9 months ago

The problem I mean with the pricing structure is that there is a lack of 6.5m strikers and 5.5m or below midfielders.

      1. LangerznMash

I'm amazed ESM only has 4.7% ownership when he is the only decent £5.5m mid option.
Re: your post... sounds like you need to restructure.

          • 9 Years

I think you're right about restructuring a bit. I like ESM as a player, I'm just concerned he's more of a man of the match player who look good on the eye but ends up assisting the assister a bit too much. However, for 5.5M you can even bench him depending on team structure, I just worry about minutes vs Mbuemo.

Think 5.5 mid and 6.5 forward are actually good price points to be on.

Typically it is at those points that real value appears. We don't know where it is now simply because it is unforeseeable - that is why they are priced so low.

My guess the 7.5 types will at best match their value and typically frustrate and lose their preseason charm when people remember how they perform.

Hi all, how's the first draft looking?

    Sanchez - (Foster)
    TAA - Shaw - Fofana - (Lamptey - White)
Salah - De Bruyne - Raphinha - Buendia - (Brownhill)
    Calvert-Lewin - Antonio - Watkins

Personally doubt the triple mid priced attack but as Holmes says you are comfortably template.

Also had KdB as my other mid but story of how he played Euros with ankle injuries makes me doubt him as a consistent starter early on.

I think Soyuncu has not been playing well for last few months and on the other hand, Fofana hasn't really don't anything wrong. So even if they switch to 4 at back, I would expect him to start.

If they sign another CB, then it's probably better to look elsewhere.
