Can Raul Jimenez re-enter the mid-price FPL forward conversation?

The Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forward pool is awash with appealing-looking mid-price options in the £6.5m-£8.0m bracket.

Ivan Toney (£6.5m), Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£7.5m), Ollie Watkins (£7.5m), Patrick Bamford (£8.0m), Kelechi Iheanacho (£7.5m) and Michail Antonio (£7.5m) all have double-digit FPL ownerships at the time of writing, with Callum Wilson (£7.5m) and Danny Ings (£8.0m) also among the tried-and-tested names in this rung.

Going under the radar somewhat is Raul Jimenez (£7.5m), who has plundered 52 attacking returns in 86 Premier League appearances to date and averaged a very respectable 4.9 points per match in doing so.

Now back in full training and clocking up the minutes in pre-season friendlies, the Wolves striker is the latest player to come under the radar in our ‘Sleeper’ series – a collection of articles on proven FPL performers who had a quiet 2020/21, be it through injury, loss of form or otherwise.

2018/19: FPL REVIEW

Dallas at left-back as Bielsa shuffles Leeds pack for trip to Wolves

In his first season as a Premier League player, the striker ranked third among forwards for shots (111) and shots in the box (88) on his way to scoring 13 goals. Jimenez was further down the list for big chances (19), however.

The Mexican also created the fifth-most chances (42) among forwards and was joint-top with Callum Wilson for big chances created (13).

That saw Jimenez rack up the fourth-highest expected goal involvement (xGI) figure (19.19) behind Jamie Vardy, Sergio Aguero and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Wolves forward ended the season with 23 attacking returns, having totaled three Fantasy assists alongside seven regular ones.

2019/20: FPL REVIEW

What's the best strategy for choosing forwards in FPL? 8

Jimenez was at it again in the 2019/20 season, going one better as he produced 24 attacking returns.

He topped the shots charts for forwards in that season with 118 attempts, which was 17 more than nearest challenger Gabriel Jesus.

Jimenez was also first for shots in the box (93), although eight forwards registered more than his 23 big chances.

He was out in front for the creativity stakes this time, creating another 13 big chances for his team-mates.

Jimenez created 48 opportunities in total, second only to Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino.

The striker landed in second on the xGI charts in 2019/20, with his total of 21.73 not far off first-placed Jamie Vardy (23.35).

In his curtailed 2020/21 campaign, Jimenez ranked fifth among all forwards for attempts (26) from Gameweeks 1 to 10 – the point at which he sustained his sickening injury.

Only four big chances arrived during that time, however, which placed him a lowly joint-16th among strikers.

2021/22: THE PROSPECTS

Can Bruno Lage make Wolves' attackers more appealing in FPL?

Having suffered a fractured skull in Gameweek 10 of last season, Jimenez returned to full training in July of this year as pre-season began.

His first kickabout in nine months came in the mid-July warm-up game against Crewe Alexandra, with the Mexican clocking up half an hour of pitch-time and putting himself about early on; always a good sign from a psychological perspective after such a traumatic incident.

Not only does Jimenez have to regain form and match fitness after a horrific injury, he has to do it under a new manager.

Bruno Lage could potentially be a tonic for Wolves’ attacking assets, however, with the former Benfica manager having a reputation for playing more offensive football than his predecessor.

Jimenez traditionally struggled for ‘big chances’ under Nuno Espirito Santo, although did offset that with his durability (he was an ever-present in the Premier League for over two years until his injury) and by being more creative than most of his positional rivals.

We will need a few Gameweeks to assess Lage’s impact and Jimenez’s match-sharpness but that marries well with Wolves’ relatively difficult opening fixture list of Leicester (a), Spurs (H) and Manchester United (H), which gives us an audition period of sorts before the September international break.

The schedule brightens significantly from Gameweek 4.

If fully fit, Jimenez could certainly stake a claim for a spot in our squads among a stacked mid-price striker bracket, considering his proven FPL potential.

I currently have in a three way rotation where I play two each week so I can avoid the tough fixtures. If you need to play then every few week I would try to find an extra 0.5 - some ok options at 6.

He was very good at the end of last season and has been given a new contract and the no.10 shirt, so unless there are any new attacking midfield signings at Arsenal (i.e. Maddison) he should be a regular starter.

Actually have him in my current draft

Sentiment plays a part naturally - I'm close to his biggest fan and WCed in week 3 last time to get him. But looked over what he actually did yesterday and remembered just how good he an asset he was. More than that he's player I would leave in place for weeks on end even if he was "underperforming". Trust is key to me.

I really don't understand the logic - ' he's good value at this price so picking him in GW1' - see this for a lot of Leeds assets.
If you think they are underpriced, they will still be around a similar price 4-5 Gameweeks later, when the fixtures would be good too?
How does their lesser price justify their bad fixtures?
We can change our entire starting 11 in 11 Gameweeks just via FTs, we need not focus on long term value of a player.

I agree I think Leeds players are becoming pre season bandwagons at this point. That said I’ve got two specifically because of how they rotate with my Brighton outfield players.

If that's the reasoning I'm fine with it. (They seemed to be scoring against all teams last time around, so it makes sense)

But most posts here say that they're having players like ESR/Raph/Bamford/Harrison just because they have been underpriced this season.

At least from the attacking point of view, I don't think they are. Or it depends on what strategy will Bielsa come up with. Last season after the 2-6 trashing at Old Trafford they started playing very defensively against top teams. 0-0 against Chelsea and United, they parked the bus at Etihad for example.

Thoughts on this non-Bruno team? Feels well balanced, but the obvious weakness is - well...no Bruno

    Meslier, 4.0

    TAA, Shaw, Digne, Fofana, Lamptey

    Salah, Son, Mahrez, Buendia, ESR

    Bamford, Nacho, 4.5

Apart from Mahrez this looks really good.
Not sure on his playing time.
You have decent cover in two 4.5 defs, but I think when he doesn't start he might come on for a 1 point cameo.
Would personally degrade him and add another mid priced forward/ change him to a nailed on mid

Yeah but even for 5.5 I'm not convinced. For example Welbeck is only 0.5 more expensive and last season he was on 0.5 expected goal involvement per game, is also already proven in Premier League (Brighton's form is a bit of an unknown though). Many defenders premium defenders should also outscore him in my opinion. Of course just looking at expected stats won't tell you all, but at the moment it's the best predictor we have I guess. I wonder if from the team structure perspective it is even optimal to have midfielders in that price bracket (if they aren't seriously underpriced).

Agreed on your train of thought really

The rider I'd add is that week 1 is an odd squad to pick - there'll be a hole somewhere almost inevitably unless you spread funds really thinly.

I'm also slightly influenced by having hit lucky in that price bracket before. It didn't last but it didn't need to but McGinn was ace a couple of seasons back from the off iirc. Makeweight slot.

    Hi gents,
    How is this draft looking?

    Bachmann
    TAA Coufal Digne
    Raphinha Salah Bruno Buendía
    Watkins Nacho DCL

    Foster Brownhill Lamptey Manquillo

The only the difference in the template is if people put Salah and Fernandez at the beginning or the end of their midfield list. Pep went for the middle which is new.

Not keen on DCL but he could go bang bang bang early again. And not a fan here of triple midpriced up top - think people are overestimating their appeal

Bang on template so won't be far off everyone else anyway.

Anyone interested in ait-nouri as he played left wing for wolves today but registered as a defender in FPL?

Article above misses out I think slightly on Jim's party piece or at least downplays it.

I did a slightly obsessive trawl through his stats some time back when he was fit. Only Mo could match him for consistency of returns. The detail is lost now but it was something along the lines of never going more than 3 matches blanking and 3 blanks in a row was exceptionally bad form for him.

After around 80 games in the Premier League, he had never blanked four times in a row - good times! https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/22589613

I imagine he is now officially the most consistent FPL performer as Mo defo went on a streak of more than 3 without returns last season.

OK this, where to put the 1m

    Bachmann
    TAA Chilwell Coufal
    Salah Son Mahrez Raph Buendia
    Watkins Toney

    Foster Lamptey Ait Nouri Davis

Fair argument for leaving it itb but that is I suppose an odd way to use the Bruno windfall.

      Toney to Nacho logical.

Have a similar set up currently.

It's possible to shave money off a 6.5 and get Grealish and ESR. With a little further adjustment you could get a 9.0 or even 9.5 Sancho.

      If you wanted to spend it all;

      - Drop Ait-Nouri/Lamptey to a 4.0 - upgrade Buendia to Grealish
      - Upgrade Toney to a 7.5

But I like the team and the money ITB.

    Tell me about Ward-Prowse please?

6.0m last season scoring 156 pts classed as a midfielder (8th highest among all midfielders). 6.5m this season. He is on all free-kicks and corners and is a significant creative influence, usually good for 6G and 6A minimum. He stays fit and is nailed. He has had a proper break not being selected for England.

players like him it seems you need to play every week of the season to get the value.

and I suspect people don't find it fun to have a 6.5m player on their team all year for a kinda crappy team.
      which doesn't mean you shouldn't.

never bench, never captain and because of his free-kick goalscoring he is fixture proof?

          Pretty much

For me he is perfect on a late/midseason budget as a 5th mid in a power line up. Irrational perhaps but early season I'd be looking for more obvious bang for my buck.

Very unsexy selection but he is a good pick for sure - just one of those players who gets ignored. He cost me my H2H league last season - crushed my Raph pick

Correct me if I’m wrong… last year, when Ings was injured, JWP was on penalties. When Ings is playing he’ll probably take the penalties. JWP is on my shortlist, and will probably be in my squad if Ings leaves.

He's a horrible pick. Owned him twice last year and blanked for 3/4 weeks each time. Wouldn't touch with a bargepole

With Son priced at 10.0 and assuming you have 2 other premiums (template being Salah and Bruno), how likely are you to captain him? Because 10.0 for a player you’ll captain say 1 in 6 games seems a bit steep to me. Or do people consider him to be a reliable captaincy option that justifies the price tag?

    1. diesel001

If Kane leaves, Son will be a snip at 10.0m

What do you think? ESR and Ayling to rotate based on fixtures!

    Sanchez
    TAA, Robbo, Lamptey
    Salah, Bruno, ESR, Havertz, Buendia
    Watkins, Toney

    X, Ayling, Omobamidele, Obafemi

    Cheers!

Safe to say Man Utd winning the top 4 transfer window so far?

Sancho & Varane are two huge boosts to that squad

City as things stand have gone backwards (Aguero out, no one in)

As have Chelsea (no one in, other than more squad bloat with Barkley, RLC Gallagher, Ampadou & Batshuyai all back & Giroud/Tammy gone)

Liverpool probably looking at a positive overall (Gini out, Konate in, VVD effectively in) but still not what you would call a stellar window for them

Chelsea & City need to get stuff done soon as the days won’t be long ticking away either

Unlike City this - don't they typically get their business done quickly? But then again they don't have a record in having to deal with Levy I guess.

And joking apart do they have any first teamers in preseason? Just had a squint at their squad and only a handful will not have been on international duty.

Fast start? Could happen of course but this is not the way you'd plan it.

Pep being Pep he may well have decided that the only way to truly show his mAnAgEmEnt gEniUs to the world is to avoid signing a striker and instead rotate Gundo, Torres, Raz, Jesus, KDB and Mahrez all in false 9 game by game

It’s not tbf, but seems to be very close

Hope it’s not Sancho last season & ends up a false alarm as he is badly needed

I know that is my concern. Ramos is gone already so I don’t see them rushing to lose Varane also.
