FPL team guide 2021/22 – Manchester United: Best players, stats and more

Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season continues with this preview of Manchester United.

The Red Devils largely exceeded expectations in the Premier League in 2020/21 as they finished runners-up to their cross-city rivals.

They became only the fourth team in English top-flight history to go a full season unbeaten away from home, but some indifferent performances at Old Trafford suggest that improvement is needed if they are to mount a serious charge for the title next term.

Perhaps hit harder than most by the lack of fans in stadiums, United won just nine of their 19 Premier League home matches, as they failed to beat two of the relegated teams and only defeated two sides in the top half of the table.

The campaign culminated with a UEFA Europa League final loss against Villarreal, but despite a frustrating end, the word ‘progress’ feels like a fair assessment of their season.

We’ll delve into United’s numbers in the article below but remember that you can conduct your own FPL research into the Red Devils with our comprehensive Opta player and team data in our Premium Members Area.

THE ATTACK

The Complete Guide to FPL Triple Gameweek 35

Attacking wise, United ranked second for goals scored but just sixth for shots in the box and non-penalty expected goals (non-pen xG):

TotalRank v other Premier League sides
Goals732nd
Shots5264th
Shots in the box3246th
Shots on target2073rd
Big chances953rd
Expected goals (xG)60.904th
Non-penalty expected goals (non-pen xG)52.236th

During the season, Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side won 11 penalties, with Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) converting nine of his 10 attempts.

The Portuguese enjoyed an excellent first full season at United as he finished as the top-scoring Fantasy player with 18 goals, a further 14 assists and 244 FPL points.

His 121 goal attempts ranked third amongst all players, while his 20 big chances created and 9.67 expected assists (xA) were both league-leading totals.

Given his all-round potential for points, and the fact United have one of the more favourable opening schedules, it’s no surprise that Fernandes’ FPL ownership already sits at 41.9%.

Above: Manchester United’s fixtures Gameweeks 1-7

However, it is worth noting that his numbers did cool off a little during the final months, possibly due to fatigue given that Solskjaer insisted on playing him in pretty much every competitive fixture that United had to fulfil.

The Portugal international featured in 58 matches in all competitions last term, averaging just over 83 minutes per Premier League appearance.

Following his EURO 2020 excursions, Fernandes is set to return to United’s Carrington training base next week, but team-mate Marcus Rashford (£9.5m) may have to wait a while longer as it has been suggested that he will undergo shoulder surgery at the end of the month.

The England international’s form came under scrutiny during the run-in, but free from any complications next term, could he perhaps get back to his explosive best?

Solskjær was non-committal on whether or not he would undergo surgery when talking to the press last weekend, but it is clearly something that needs monitoring, as a period on the sidelines would have huge implications for FPL managers.

Without Rashford available, Mason Greenwood’s (£7.5m) early-season credentials may be given a boost. The 19-year-old was United’s stand-out performer during the final weeks of the season. In fact, six of his seven goals for the campaign, plus one of his assists, all arrived in his final eight outings. Having missed EURO 2020 due to a niggling injury, he could perhaps be one to watch if Rashford is ruled out for a prolonged spell.

Elsewhere, Edinson Cavani (£8.5m) will stay on for another year following a successful 2020/21.

Statistically, the Uruguayan ranked second amongst all forwards for big chances per 90 minutes, which does suggest that he might be a viable option for our forward lines in the opening weeks, at least until the Champions’ League group stages – and likely rotation for the veteran striker – begin in September.

Above: Forwards sorted by big chances (BCT) per 90 minutes 2020/21

The imminent arrival of Jadon Sancho, however, is surely where most FPL managers attention will lie, outside of Fernandes of course.

https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2021/07/03/how-does-jadon-sancho-compare-to-bruno-fernandes-and-other-united-fpl-assets/

It’s hard to speculate exactly where he will be stationed, at least initially, but if Rashford is indeed out, does it heighten the prospect of Sancho operating off the left?

It is worth noting that some of his best performances at Borussia Dortmund arrived from that flank, where he can cut inside onto his stronger foot.

However, he may well be needed on the right, an area United struggled to create from last season.

Assuming Kane to City, leaving Son as the main man as Spurs, how’s this looking?

    Sanchez | Foster
    TAA | Digne | Lamptey | Ayling | Williams
    Salah | Son | Buendia | ESR | Brownhill
    Kane | Watkins | Toney

No room for Fernandes which is a shame.

I don't like how 4-4-2 looks on screen, but think it gives the best balance if trying to get son in to Salah and Bruno team.

    Sanchez
    Trent Shaw Digne Fofana
    Salah Fernandes Son Raphinha

basically, if you want the 3 of them, a 3-5-2 forces you down to a risky Sarr or ESR, but a 4-4-2 allows it to be Digne.

With the Kane rumours about I'm ready to inevitably be torn to shreds on this. Honestly though I made this as my first draft more or less (just moved another 4.5 to AN and Tella to Rice) and like everyone else lots of room and time for changes

    Emi (Sanchez)
    Maguire TAA Lamptey (White Ait-Nouri)
    Raphinha Havertz Grealish Foden (Rice)
    Iheanacho Kane Wilson

    Things to note:
    1) Initial plan (and still is for now) was to actually start off the season with Joao Pedro in place of Kane and Salah in place of Rice for a few games and then revert to this.
    2) If Kane goes to City Foden will likely move to someone else, currently thinking Greenwood. Same for Havertz if Haaland joins Chelsea.
    3) Initially no Salah or Bruno as wasn't planning to have either for too long. Bruno I had literally all season last season but he's been in poor form for a long time. I think he probably just needed a bit of a break after a hectic season so it's more of a wait and see. I'm sure he'll still rack up points over the season but I think there's good value elsewhere.
    4) 0itb with this but again if I feel a need to get another premium before the season starts I can downgrade the likes of Grealish or Martinez easily.

Who can say? My feeling is that both sides will want to make it work. But City have to balance the books by offloading 2 or 3 players and their wage bills, and Spurs need to line up incomers who can only sign if the Kane deal is done. There will be an enormous amount of horse-trading and if one deal falls through, the whole lot could.

Manchester City are interested but there’s NO fee agreed. Only bid was one month ago: £100m, turned down.

That £7.5m mid range is so tempting. Pepe, Jota and Greenwood all capable of scoring big if they start for their respective teams. I will likely punt on two out of three of these.

Just been checking clean sheet patterns,

City have had 56 cs in the last 3 seasons. 35 of them have fallen in 3 runs of 49 matches.

    2021 weeks 10-25 = 13 cs from 17
    2020 weeks 24-38 = 10 cs from 15
    2019 weeks 22-38 = 12 cs from 17

That's over 70% of cs in just over 40% of their matches. Fixtures may have played a part but this looks like form to me. Have had a brief squint at Liverpool and Chelsea and much the same pattern appears that it may apply.

Clean sheets are form driven and not (solely) fixture based? Clean sheets do not fall evenly through the season but tend to come in clusters?

Okay, so look for the pattern. Maybe miss the first couple of a run but jump aboard a bandwagon once it's clearly emerged. That's what I have in mind for City who tend to start slowly. Same with Chelsea - I'm not looking to grab them until my wildcard. Liverpool, however, with their starting fixtures are impossible to resist - TAA starts.

This is my rationale for avoiding double Liverpool defence from the off - or part of it anyway.

Had a look at this last preseason too and then it looked that you needed to wait for a run of 3 from 4 say and then hop on to ride the wave at Liverpool. I naturally did exactly the opposite and went on them super early to try and get ahead of the curve.

Should add that I go form over fixtures here simply because the runs were so long - in each case between 15 and 17 matches - you can't have a good run of fixtures that lasts that long - you've essentially played everyone

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

You're talking about the elite teams for whom fixtures means nothing.

I think this is a bit of a red herring. Fixtures matter for every team, they're certainly less important for elite teams, but you'd still expect a team like City to score less and concede more vs other top 6 teams in the long run.

Who do you pick from their defence though? Only Dias is nailed. Cancelo obviously the standout for attack returns but fighting with Walker for rightback.

        No one right now

Had Dias for most of the right time last season but even with those cs he was only good really as opposed to great. Stones or Cancelo would be my pick I guess if nailed again but there's a few ifs there.

Pingi's point is that once the run is underway, you'll know who the favoured defenders are. You can't know at this stage.

Looks like they don't really do cleansheets as frequently early in seasons either

And they had a pretty bad start last year whatever they were doing in preseason...

This year's pre-season is hardly looking any better with the amount of disruption at the minute

      1. pingissimus
        • 5 Years
        2 years, 8 months ago

Yep early season doesn't look to be their favourite territory

This more or less makes sense to me on my theory. Clean sheets runs appear when the whole side is grooved and that takes a few games to achieve or is at least much harder after preseason where there is inevitably some disruption.

Might have a check of other big cs teams early season to see if they do notably better then. My guess is that early season you get a few rogue outfits (Everton etc) who come good but the big boys are typically around 1 in 3 for cs - decent of course but below their very best.

Crazy how going Bruno-less can change your team. Bruno + Gilmour suddenly becomes Son + Raphina with the 0.5 i had in the bank. Does it even make sense going Bruno when i can have Son and Raph?

I think it's just about deciding how many premiums you need that you're actually going to captain for the first few. Salah starts with less question marks, chiefly through fixtures and money not being spent around him.

        Well:
        1- Salah (norwich away)

        4- Son (crystal palace away)
        5- Salah (crystal palace home)

This was my second draft a couple of weeks back.

This sort of imbalanced squad - imbalance inevitable really - blasted it from the off a couple of seasons back and so I'm not dead set against it.

You need to go against the idea of premiums only being valuable if you captain them. It also helps to make the rationalisation that it is normally easier to downgrade players than upgrade them

      i think this is decent

      Sanchez
      Trent Coufal Fofana Lamptey
      Salah Bruno Raphinha Buendia
      Kane Toney

      Steele Ayling Brownhill Obafemi

you could take Buendia down to ESR and get Shaw.

I've pretty much narrowed down my shortlist into 4 categories:

Essential picks: Sanchez, TAA, Robbo, Salah, Bruno, Watkins
Sensible picks: Digne, Shaw, KdB, Raphinha, Buendia, Son, DCL, Bamford
Punty value picks (pending gametime): Henderson, James, Doherty, Tierney, Mahrez, Pepe, Jota, Greenwood, 'nacho, Cavani
Enablers: £4.5m def rotation pairs, ESR, Toney, (Origi if he moves clubs)
    Looking at an unorthodox 4-5-1...

    Sanchez
    TAA, Robbo, Digne/James, Lamptey
    Salah(c), Bruno, Pepe, Buendia, Raphinha
    Watkins
£0.5m ITB for transfers. (Foster, Ayling, Origi, Obafemi)

According to Football Manager 2021 he is a bit better defensively than Sanchez (mostly on marking & heading), much better mentally across the board, and slightly smaller, slower, lighter by 5kg + a bit weaker physically (apart from jumping where he is better)

He's also only 22 where Sanchez is 24

Not Franco Baresi by any stretch, but looks a potentially decent solid no nonsense defender from what I can see

I've unfortunately seen enough in football not to use the phrase "no way they don't sell Kane to City"

There are several extremely plausible situations where Kane doesn't go to City in this window

It looks likely, and there's often no smoke without fire (its been in every paper every day for the last month)

But likely doesn't mean done, or anywhere near it
