FPL team guide 2021/22 – Manchester United: Best players, stats and more

Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season continues with this preview of Manchester United.

The Red Devils largely exceeded expectations in the Premier League in 2020/21 as they finished runners-up to their cross-city rivals.

They became only the fourth team in English top-flight history to go a full season unbeaten away from home, but some indifferent performances at Old Trafford suggest that improvement is needed if they are to mount a serious charge for the title next term.

Perhaps hit harder than most by the lack of fans in stadiums, United won just nine of their 19 Premier League home matches, as they failed to beat two of the relegated teams and only defeated two sides in the top half of the table.

The campaign culminated with a UEFA Europa League final loss against Villarreal, but despite a frustrating end, the word ‘progress’ feels like a fair assessment of their season.

We’ll delve into United’s numbers in the article below but remember that you can conduct your own FPL research into the Red Devils with our comprehensive Opta player and team data in our Premium Members Area.

THE ATTACK

The Complete Guide to FPL Triple Gameweek 35

Attacking wise, United ranked second for goals scored but just sixth for shots in the box and non-penalty expected goals (non-pen xG):

TotalRank v other Premier League sides
Goals732nd
Shots5264th
Shots in the box3246th
Shots on target2073rd
Big chances953rd
Expected goals (xG)60.904th
Non-penalty expected goals (non-pen xG)52.236th

During the season, Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side won 11 penalties, with Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) converting nine of his 10 attempts.

The Portuguese enjoyed an excellent first full season at United as he finished as the top-scoring Fantasy player with 18 goals, a further 14 assists and 244 FPL points.

His 121 goal attempts ranked third amongst all players, while his 20 big chances created and 9.67 expected assists (xA) were both league-leading totals.

Given his all-round potential for points, and the fact United have one of the more favourable opening schedules, it’s no surprise that Fernandes’ FPL ownership already sits at 41.9%.

Above: Manchester United’s fixtures Gameweeks 1-7

However, it is worth noting that his numbers did cool off a little during the final months, possibly due to fatigue given that Solskjaer insisted on playing him in pretty much every competitive fixture that United had to fulfil.

The Portugal international featured in 58 matches in all competitions last term, averaging just over 83 minutes per Premier League appearance.

Following his EURO 2020 excursions, Fernandes is set to return to United’s Carrington training base next week, but team-mate Marcus Rashford (£9.5m) may have to wait a while longer as it has been suggested that he will undergo shoulder surgery at the end of the month.

The England international’s form came under scrutiny during the run-in, but free from any complications next term, could he perhaps get back to his explosive best?

Solskjær was non-committal on whether or not he would undergo surgery when talking to the press last weekend, but it is clearly something that needs monitoring, as a period on the sidelines would have huge implications for FPL managers.

Without Rashford available, Mason Greenwood’s (£7.5m) early-season credentials may be given a boost. The 19-year-old was United’s stand-out performer during the final weeks of the season. In fact, six of his seven goals for the campaign, plus one of his assists, all arrived in his final eight outings. Having missed EURO 2020 due to a niggling injury, he could perhaps be one to watch if Rashford is ruled out for a prolonged spell.

Elsewhere, Edinson Cavani (£8.5m) will stay on for another year following a successful 2020/21.

Statistically, the Uruguayan ranked second amongst all forwards for big chances per 90 minutes, which does suggest that he might be a viable option for our forward lines in the opening weeks, at least until the Champions’ League group stages – and likely rotation for the veteran striker – begin in September.

Above: Forwards sorted by big chances (BCT) per 90 minutes 2020/21

The imminent arrival of Jadon Sancho, however, is surely where most FPL managers attention will lie, outside of Fernandes of course.

https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2021/07/03/how-does-jadon-sancho-compare-to-bruno-fernandes-and-other-united-fpl-assets/

It’s hard to speculate exactly where he will be stationed, at least initially, but if Rashford is indeed out, does it heighten the prospect of Sancho operating off the left?

It is worth noting that some of his best performances at Borussia Dortmund arrived from that flank, where he can cut inside onto his stronger foot.

However, he may well be needed on the right, an area United struggled to create from last season.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but say you’re a nation that’s good at football, but in no means a favorite to win the World Cup or your nations continent tournament, why not go all in and send the best possible squad you can to win an Olympic gold medal? Why does it seem nations will send their B, C or even youth squads to the Olympics. At the end of the day an Olympic gold is an Olympic gold no matter what sport it is so why is men’s football the only Olympic sport I can think of where the worlds best athletes aren’t competing in it?

I understand though that people will support their nation no matter who’s wearing the shirt and what age they are and I’m sure it’s can be fun to some knowing you’re watching the future stars I.e Argentina’s squad in 2008 was full of future stars. But not sure why say men’s football there’d be an age restriction and it seems there isn’t one of the women’s game

The Olympian spirit was always amateur until the evil of neoliberalism tarnished it. "It's not the winning, but the taking part that counts". Could be the football still retains the vestiges of that ideal.

Apparently so. There was speculation about him leaving and I think they’ve done that to keep him sweet. Rafa has said as much in an interview that Richarlison has promised payback for it this coming season.
Personally I’m not sure Madrid would be in for him unless Anceloti really has a say. He’s so overrated IMO.

      It's very similar to FPL.

You are awarded more though for players that shoot a lot and also players that play 90 mins. Picking really nailed players like Soucek can really rack up points.

Watkins and Salah are basically must-haves in FanTeam imo.

Also goalkeeper is not a throwaway slot like in FPL. 0.5pts each save makes GKs basically the HIGHEST value picks in the game.

Mane at 10 make Salah (12.5) not a must-have imo.

        Mane + Son
        or
        Salah + Mount

The pricing in the fanteam game doesn't make salah an auto pickup though..very tempted to go with Mane (10), VVD (6) and Taa in few of my drafts

I think it does. Salah shoots a lot and is very nailed. I'm not going without. The question is Salah + Jota or Salah + Mane imo.

            • 11 Years

I think you might be overestimating the Shots on target effect..last season Salah had 16 more shots on target than Mane that translates only into (16*0.4) =4 point difference..ofcourse I will have Salah in most of my drafts but Mane at 2.5 m less and VVD at 6 represent great value imo

Add the 90 minute points and captaincy and suddenly it's closer to 20 points.

I like Mane too don't get me wrong. I think most of my teams will double up to start the season.

Salah played less than 90 mins 7 times last season to Mane's 8 so not much in it in the 90 min thing..However I agree that the threat of Jota looms large and captaincy plays a role and a double up seems viable to start with

This. It requires a lot of effort and only slightly increases your chances. I know the last winner did it but it’s like all these games, you have to be good to do well and just very lucky to win.

Quick question. When I look in the members area I see the next stats:

    Expected Assists (2020-2021):
    Bruno 9.64
    TAA 7.50
    Salah 7.04
    Westwood 6.93
    Mount 6.89

But when I use understat the top 5 players (Expected Assists 2020-2021):
    Bruno 11.47
    KDB 10.96
    Mount 9.85
    Raphinha 9.52
    Son 9.51

And when I use FBREF top 5 is:
    Bruno 11.0
    KDB 10.2
    Song 8.9
    Grealish 8.6
    Raphinha 8.1

Who has the correct/best data and anyone know why the numbers are different?

Well if they’re all expected numbers then they’re all predictions

I assume each has their own separate formula.

No way to know which is the best - but probably there’s a way of looking at old predictions to see if any prediction tool has been consistently more accurate.

      Games: 31 / 30
      Wins: 17 / 18
      Draws: 6 / 8
      Defeats: 8 / 4

      Points per game: 1.83 / 2.06

Stronger. He isn't creative enough to oust Fernandes and he isn't defensive enough to oust McTominay. Sell Pogba and get in Rice and Varane and Man Utd are looking good:

      Henderson
      AWB Varane Maguire Shaw
      Rice McTominay
      Sancho Fernandes Rashford
      Cavani

That is a damn good team, IMO. People will say Cavani is crap, but his goalscoring record is immense. And he is still super fit despite his age.

How do you concede 1 goal in 6 league games vs Man City twice, Chelsea twice, Liverpool twice? By parking a whole team in front of Maguire to make sure he isn’t exposed, that’s how

Hopefully if Varane signs they don’t need to go down that path as much

Martial Greenwood aren't exactly poor alternatives

12 months is a long time of course but plenty were talking of setting up with Martial and/or Greenwood on the bench this time last year so good were they and the fixtures.

describing martial and greenwood as extraordinary depth is a stretch. Martial was awful pre his injury. And Greenwood was non existent until the run in (I understand he is still very young).

Martial isn’t permanently awful though - that’s FFS speak -there’s a big difference between going through a bad patch and being a bad player

Martial is unplayable when he’s on it

And Greenwood is possibly one of the brightest prospects in world football - having those two as bench players is incredible depth - way over 100m market value between the pair of them

united's attacking issues (in my opinion) have been that too many of their attackers are streaky. Rashford, Greenwood and Martial are certainly that. When they all click, teams get swept aside, when a couple of them are on off days (as they often are) united look turgid.

Cavani has helped with that as he is far better than martial (never rated him). We'll see if Sancho is more consistent than greenwood (he's certainly a more natural winger than Greenwood).

I suppose one of the issues with having lots of good players is the goals might be shared around a bit more like they are at City rather than say Sp*rs where all the goals go through 2 players.

Fabio Silva, Welbeck, Maupay, ASM may be better.

if you are looking for a cheap 3rd fwd Welbeck is probably the best bet. his problem is fitness but shouldnt be an issue at the start. his pp90 is excellent (5.2), brightons xG is actually good, but Maupay being mopey meant that didnt convert.
and Pukkis fixtures get good when Welbecks turn.

Thanks! Not sure I want to go with Welbeck. I will be watching Pukki. For 6.0, I would take something like the ~140 pts for the season he put up last time, and maybe he can even do a bit better.

For now, maybe Buendia/ESR as 5th mid with 4.5 FWD and option to downgrade mid; upgrade 4.5 fwd later.

Double Liverpool defence is back in season now and only variation from template on here is extra 5.5 in defence over another 6.5 mid.

The most obvious way FFS template varies from "out there" is general absence of Grealish but even that is solved by switching a forward into midfield.

    Reguillon Firpo Dunk
    Raphina Bruno Salah Son
    7.5 7.5 7.5
    Bench 4.0 4.5 4.5

Could do Raphina to SmithRowe or Harrison or Soucek, but I think there's value in the 5.0 defenders this year, let alone the 4.5's. Excluding Trent and Robertson, they almost kept pace with 5.5 and 6.0 defenders last season, mainly due to rotation.

The above won't be my team, I'm just browsing.

Yea, I think Arteta will really push ESR this year. Last season could easily be classed as his breakout season, and looking at the Arsenal current team, if they sign no more mids or forwards, then he could turn out to be one of the best value players in the game.

In your opinion, who are the best 5.0 defenders out there?

    I currently have
    Bachmann, Foster
    TAA, Digne, Lamptey, Ayling, 5.0
    Salah, Fernandes, Greenwood, Buendia, Brownhill
    Naco, Watkins, Toney

I am not that attached to Lamptey & Ayling, tinkering with which 4.5s I put in there.

      Reguillon/Doherty
      Coufal
      Michael Keane

I like Keane and Dunk but that would create problems for you possibly with Digne Lamptey.

The one I have currently is Tierney. It's Arsenal defence and initial fixtures mixed at best but soon turn good. There's a punt involved there but think he's a definite upside choice and my doubts revolve around fitness mostly.

Coufal is the other name most in the mix probs and I'd take him over Cresswell personally.
