FPL team guide 2021/22 – Manchester United: Best players, stats and more

Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season continues with this preview of Manchester United.

The Red Devils largely exceeded expectations in the Premier League in 2020/21 as they finished runners-up to their cross-city rivals.

They became only the fourth team in English top-flight history to go a full season unbeaten away from home, but some indifferent performances at Old Trafford suggest that improvement is needed if they are to mount a serious charge for the title next term.

Perhaps hit harder than most by the lack of fans in stadiums, United won just nine of their 19 Premier League home matches, as they failed to beat two of the relegated teams and only defeated two sides in the top half of the table.

The campaign culminated with a UEFA Europa League final loss against Villarreal, but despite a frustrating end, the word ‘progress’ feels like a fair assessment of their season.

We’ll delve into United’s numbers in the article below but remember that you can conduct your own FPL research into the Red Devils with our comprehensive Opta player and team data in our Premium Members Area.

THE ATTACK

The Complete Guide to FPL Triple Gameweek 35

Attacking wise, United ranked second for goals scored but just sixth for shots in the box and non-penalty expected goals (non-pen xG):

TotalRank v other Premier League sides
Goals732nd
Shots5264th
Shots in the box3246th
Shots on target2073rd
Big chances953rd
Expected goals (xG)60.904th
Non-penalty expected goals (non-pen xG)52.236th

During the season, Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side won 11 penalties, with Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) converting nine of his 10 attempts.

The Portuguese enjoyed an excellent first full season at United as he finished as the top-scoring Fantasy player with 18 goals, a further 14 assists and 244 FPL points.

His 121 goal attempts ranked third amongst all players, while his 20 big chances created and 9.67 expected assists (xA) were both league-leading totals.

Given his all-round potential for points, and the fact United have one of the more favourable opening schedules, it’s no surprise that Fernandes’ FPL ownership already sits at 41.9%.

Above: Manchester United’s fixtures Gameweeks 1-7

However, it is worth noting that his numbers did cool off a little during the final months, possibly due to fatigue given that Solskjaer insisted on playing him in pretty much every competitive fixture that United had to fulfil.

The Portugal international featured in 58 matches in all competitions last term, averaging just over 83 minutes per Premier League appearance.

Following his EURO 2020 excursions, Fernandes is set to return to United’s Carrington training base next week, but team-mate Marcus Rashford (£9.5m) may have to wait a while longer as it has been suggested that he will undergo shoulder surgery at the end of the month.

The England international’s form came under scrutiny during the run-in, but free from any complications next term, could he perhaps get back to his explosive best?

Solskjær was non-committal on whether or not he would undergo surgery when talking to the press last weekend, but it is clearly something that needs monitoring, as a period on the sidelines would have huge implications for FPL managers.

Without Rashford available, Mason Greenwood’s (£7.5m) early-season credentials may be given a boost. The 19-year-old was United’s stand-out performer during the final weeks of the season. In fact, six of his seven goals for the campaign, plus one of his assists, all arrived in his final eight outings. Having missed EURO 2020 due to a niggling injury, he could perhaps be one to watch if Rashford is ruled out for a prolonged spell.

Elsewhere, Edinson Cavani (£8.5m) will stay on for another year following a successful 2020/21.

Statistically, the Uruguayan ranked second amongst all forwards for big chances per 90 minutes, which does suggest that he might be a viable option for our forward lines in the opening weeks, at least until the Champions’ League group stages – and likely rotation for the veteran striker – begin in September.

Above: Forwards sorted by big chances (BCT) per 90 minutes 2020/21

The imminent arrival of Jadon Sancho, however, is surely where most FPL managers attention will lie, outside of Fernandes of course.

https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2021/07/03/how-does-jadon-sancho-compare-to-bruno-fernandes-and-other-united-fpl-assets/

It’s hard to speculate exactly where he will be stationed, at least initially, but if Rashford is indeed out, does it heighten the prospect of Sancho operating off the left?

It is worth noting that some of his best performances at Borussia Dortmund arrived from that flank, where he can cut inside onto his stronger foot.

However, he may well be needed on the right, an area United struggled to create from last season.

11 goal involvements all season in the PL isn't great (4 of his 6 goals were under Tuchel, not sure of assists). It's not bad obviously and if not for poor finishing he'd have more assists but I still think he's more defensive under Tuchel

Agree, we’re all talking like he is signed already for them! The longer the ‘saga’ goes on for plus the minimal pre season, I think he is almost certain not to play GW1.

I'd have a strong bench, and likely Foden and Torres as well. Suits me, in that case, if he doesn't start, as those who have him, but not planned for his absence would lose out, and others won't have him for the first game or two that he does start.

If Arsenal get Maddison, it's already going to be so tricky to pick a starting XI each week with no European football. They are going to surprise people this season, I reckon. I don't understand why people don't rate the players individually. The chuff is being flushed. And this is not even including any potential signing of a class RB, DM or GK.

    Leno
    [Tavares], [White], Gabriel, Tierney
    [Maddison],Partey, ESR

Manager completely out of his depth. Absolutely no control over his team, couldn't figure out Lacazetta/Auba issue. I have no faith in his ability whatsoever.

I get you, honestly I like Maddison but think for the price he'd likely command Arsenal might be better spending a bit less elsewhere, he still has fitness issues a lot and because of that even when he's available he's often just returning from an injury or seemingly pushing himself too far to play so I feel like if you need to depend on him it's tough.

Do you think Pepe has a chance of taking that CF role? I'm wondering where Auba and Lacazette fit into that team. They had contrasting ends to the season but I feel like even with Lacazette playing better there's still always question marks over him

          1. Deulofail
            • 8 Years
            2 years, 9 months ago

I don't think Pepe would likely get the CF role, out-and-out, tbh. But I think the attack is fairly fluid. You could put him up top alongside Lacazette, for example. Or you could put ESR at false 9 at times, with Pepe pentrating from the inside right. The formation on the page in this text format doesn't really mean that much; it's more about the players on the pitch. Then they can move around wherever they need to go! 😀

    How is everyone doing?

I am debating filling out the midfield this year as I think it is where the points will be. But find it very tough to not go without a proper strike force.

PL seems to lack good striker choices to put more upfront.

If Kane moves it could open up a few more possibilities in terms of transfers in the PL which could then make it more interesting.

The forward options are the best they've been for years imo. DCL, Watkins, Inheacho, Toney, Antonio all good picks to start with. Also Bamford, Cavani, Kane...

      1. thepeen555
        • 7 Years
        2 years, 9 months ago

Trouble is for me and Inheacho is the introduction of Daka. He looks good. But does he stop playing Vardy? Doubt it.

Kane is expensive but does get the job done but if he moves to city he would likely do better but would he still get rotated out?

Cavani won't play week in week out and is a lot of money to be neither here nor there at times

    2. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 3 Years

My current draft has Kane, Wilson and Iheanacho, but no Bruno or Salah. Plan was to revert to this around GW3 but remove Kane for the start to facilitate Salah for 2 weeks so it won't be to the tastes of anyone here really. But I agree with you that I like having good forward options, definitely limited this year and more so because there is that batch between around 6.5-8 or so that for most means you can only have 1 or 2 on the lower scale and a 4.5 if you're going with Bruno and Salah

He will take assist potential away from Bruno as well.

New system 4-3-3 if we sign a CB

The rumoured switch to a 4-3-3 would be more of an issue in terms of Bruno's output I think, though they still need a signing or two for that to be viable.

Bruno would have to sit deeper. They'd need a better DM - someone like Rice, but if they get Varane I don't see them having the funds for the DM quality needed. Stick with 4-2-3-1 I'd say.

Why would Bruno have to sit deeper? Sancho is effectively replacing Greenwood at RW who didn't have to defend much. Bruno is only less attacking when Pogba plays.

          Agree.

The Pogba question comes into play too. A lot of the United fans who want a switch to 4-3-3 are imagining a Bruno/Pogba/DM midfield, the viability of which I'm sceptical about anyway. But if Pogba goes then it makes less sense again. Even assuming they got the DM they need, the midfield would then be completed with one of Fred/McTom/VDB anyway. All of whom would function in a 4-2-3-1 anyway.

Morning, I know its too early for an actual tam but any feedback on the way im thinking really appreciated,

    Sanchez
    Lampty TAA* Shaw
    Salah* Buendia Raphina* Fernades*
    Wilson DCL* Watkins*
    4.0* Coufal *Gilmour* 4.0def *

Thoughts- * players (or priced players on the bench) think im set on
Have a decent 1st sub for once like this?
Get rid of that decent sub and make Shaw to Dias.
Lampty for now, can move to another 4.5 if double up not looking good, Wolves later
Start with 'established' forwards, easy to go to Toney if he is actually good or 1 right down to a 4.5 if I want a better mid

Anything obvious im missing or thoughts on my thoughts really welcome

I think you have a lot of players which are often mooted on here (which is a good thing).

Personally I would go DCL -> Toney and use the extra 1.5 to make Shaw -> Dias/Chilwell and Gilmour -> ESR

Shaw + DCL -> Robbo + Toney, and that's my exact team.

How accurate is FFS 'Set-piece takers' guide? I realise it's pre-season, so work in progress.

Is this Watford pen-taker lineup correct? Deeney, Pedro, Sarr

I doubt the FFS team would have a clue. No one's seen most of the gazillion Watford forwards in action yet.

Well they're about as clued up as me then on the promoted sides. Any idea who took most pens for Watford last season?

Anyone got a good site for set-piece takers btw?

We touched on this in the Watford mids and fwds preview.

Deeney took them when on the pitch, but when he wasn't, the player who won the penalty ended up taking them.

Pedro being one, Sarr the other.

I'm sure I read that article. I'll take a look back. Kudos on the team reviews btw. We all have some dead/grey areas - other insight is always useful

Thanks for the feedback on the pens

Scary to go without any City players . . . but got to see how they set up this season to know.

Fine picks but too much money on the bench.

I'm angling towards an interchangeable bench this year . . . covid is still around for one and the ability to switch players in and out based on fixtures intrigues me. Just trying to do something a LITTLE different to the usual . . . but you are right for sure.

Maybe with such a strong bench Fripo to a 4.0 makes Tiereny to Dias, even to a 4.5 makes him Stones. Solid defence then imo

      Bench boost?

It won't be of course but the Bruno money is spread too thinly for me. Not a huge fan of so many in the 6.5 to 7.5 range personally. All decent picks in themselves for value will require patience to see that value meaning that transfers out are suboptimal

Yeah my biggest headache in that team I think is only having one captain . . . . having Bruno as the alt is important and I think United will be festooned with penalties this year . . . flip side Bruno was awful the last two months of last season and totally unimpressive at the Euros. Maybe the rest will bring him back. . . but I dunno.

Currently just playing around and looking at no Bruno set up too right now.

Not that concerned by captaincy as Son Nacho Mo seem to have it nicely covered. Where I differ is that I'm currently on a second sub premium type in midfield - Sancho/Mahrez in addition to Son.

There's also a variation where I ditch the 6.5s altogether and get Grealish in there too with a 5.5. Dubious here that Buendia matches Grealish - he was insanely good last season.

    Have TAA and Sanchez.

Both options are great and have their own merits. Perosnally I prefer A just for the Robbo/Toney factor. Toney helps free up funds too.
