FPL team guide 2021/22 – West Ham United: Best players, stats and more

Our team-by-team guide to the new Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season continues with this preview of West Ham United.

The Hammers will find 2020/21 a tough act to follow as they flirted with a UEFA Champions League qualification spot before finishing on their highest top-flight points total in 35 years.

There were success stories across the park in FPL, too, with assists aplenty from defence and goals flowing further forward.

Price hikes for a number of key assets were inevitable so we’ll assess the Fantasy appeal of David Moyes’s side ahead of 2021/22 in this piece, which takes Opta player and team data from our Premium Members Area.

Who do you favour for the first 3 GWs:
    A) Antonio (new, LEI, CPA)
    B) Iheanacho (WOL, whu, nor)
    C) Wilson (WHU, avl, SOU)

Between antonio and wilson for me.

      Gw1 prediction
      NEW 1 - WHU 3

      Wilson - 1
      Antonio - 3

      I leaning towards antonio
      Is wilson on pens?

But Nacho made his case for being 1st choice alongside Vardy last season. Rodgers will rely on Nacho as he works the others in, maybe cup ties and heavy gameweeks etc. Or in curating Vardy's minutes.

    Manc- Preston 1-0 ht (Mahrez)

Will be really hard not to have him in gw1 squad. Probably need to sacrifice Bruno

It's easy to have a lot of premiums.

But it's what it does to the rest of your team that's important.

Just as a fun exercise - a low ownership 15 - no player >10% owned, total ownership 49.9%
    Meslier, Gunnarsson
    Cancelo, Castagne, Reguilon, Cash, Veltman
    Mane, Mahrez, Pepe, Greenwood, Bowen
    Wilson, Jimenez, Adams
£0.5m ITB in case anyone gets too popular.

I have 3 of them in my current 15

There is at least 10 certain starters there

plus Mahrez and Cancelo will start the first few gameweeks most likely

Both full pre season, both full summer rest, both starting already in pre-season , both have English players who arent even back yet as competition.

Ideal to start with and see what happens thereafter

Which option would you go for?

    A) Sancho, Wilson, TAA, Digne
    B) Bruno, Toney, Robbo, Fofana

    Team below:
    Sanchez
    XXX, XXX, Shaw, White, 4.0
Salah, Son, Buendia, Raph, XXX, XXX
    Watkins, XXX, 4.5

Before you read this, yes - I'm clearly going crazy. I haven't saved this team but let me know your thoughts!

    GK: Sanchez, Foster
DEF: Veltman, Ayling, White (Arsenal), Dier, Coady
MID: De Bruyne, Salah, Fernandes, Gilmour, Bissouma
    FWD: Kane, Toney, Davis

Going for the Veltman/Ayling and White/Dier rotation pairing.

4 big hitters looks great of course but 532 ain’t going to cut it. 4 big hitters is too expensive when you can only captain one.

Unless you have Kane and/or future Chelsea striker I just don't get the 442 set up that the "experts" seem to like. There are so many great options at 7.5/8.0. So much better than the ones in midfield

Any thoughts on this first draft. I am totally out of the loop so any feedback is much appreciated. Going after Eve, Villa and pool for the early fixtures. Bench only has White playing.

    Martinez

    TAA Digne Lowton

    Salah Son Mahrez JamesRod Traore

    Watkins DCL

    Foster White Manquillo Obafemi

      - 27 premier league appearances last season (23 starts, 4 subs)
      - 17 Blanks in those 27 appearances (13 starts, 4 subs)
      - 17 returns in his other 10 appearances (all 10 were starts)

      Mahrez bulls think:
      (a) Pep will start him vs Spurs & Norwich
      (B) City will smash Spurs & Norwich
      (c) Mahrez will be more involved in the smashing than the player(/s) they're omitting for him (aided by things like 17 returns in 10 specific games last season, and possibly/probably being on penalties)

      Mahrez bears think:
      (a) his track record for appearances is patchy & his track record for scoring points when he does appear is quite volatile (17 Blanks in 27 appearances last season)
      (b) Man City may not even score a lot of goals to start the season - they were quite goal shy for the first half or so of last season
      (c) There are many other lower risk options who offer a lot in the early gameweeks without the same uncertainties attached to them

    How the human brain works

Player you don’t want scores in a friendly - “they mean nothing anyway”

Player you quite fancy scuffs one in against Preston - “he’s hitting form, time to get him in”

I haven’t played for a few years so any advice would be appreciated!

    GK: Sanchez, Steer

DEF: Shaw, Bednarek, Ayling, VVD, Dier

MID: De Bruyne, Salah, Bissouma, Havertz, Brownhill

    FWD: Watkins Vardy Pukki

Plan to swap Havertz to Mahrez for GW 2…

      * Sanchez ... Everyone has him & will be disappointed
      * Don't like the defence (except Shaw) VvD only just returning after long injury
      * Fernandes over KdB. Man Utd have btter fixtures
      * Better cheaper options than Vardy & Pukki is a bad pick

Can you downgrade Vardy to upgrade Pukki?
Can you upgrade VvD to TAA or Robertson
I would downgrade Havertz to upgrade Bissouma or Brownhill

Delighted with the purchases so far and rumoured with Niguel from Athletico, which I am on the fence on, but I still think it’s City’s to lose. Especially if they sign Kane.

Damn. That's a brilliant article yet again from Neale.

Could the Coufal and Cresswell double up be the poor man's Robbo and Trent? I had no idea they had so many assists between them.

Their fixtures aren't fantastic (not bad either though) and then they have Europe. I prefer DCL + Digne and Avl double up with their plum fixtures.

No matter what I do, having 3 very big hitters is overkill if Kane goes to Manchester. One strategy might be trying to play fixtures with them and have 2/3 of them all the time. If starting with Salah and Kane, selling Salah for Bruno when he has Che might be an option. Yet, it costs transfers and if we start with Buendia and Watkins, they are also basically booked transfers. And then the unexpected will probably also happen. Early WC might be an option, but ideally wouldn't want to use before 2nd itb. Has anyone toyed with transfer planner and gotten results that aren't nightmare?

Kane realistically means 1 premium mid and possibly TAA or Robbo.

Also usually means a £4.5 bench fodder striker.

Obafemi as 3rd sub isn't a catastrophe. I plan to play 4 at the back and have White as my first sub.

        Sanchez/ 4.0
TAA, Stones, Digne, Shaw / White
Salah, Bruno, Buendia, Jota / 4.5
        Watkins, DCL / Obafemi

Downgrading Jota to 4.5 and upgrading Obafemi to Wilson/Antonio would make getting Kane for Bruno easier. But it would still cost two transfers.

Having Watkins until gw4 then going Jimenez until gw14 or so would probs be worth a hit anyway
Could always start with Raph and Harrison with the intention of set and forget?
TAA, Robbo as set and forget if funds allow?

I've planned the whole season lol... and it looks incredible on paper in my opinion. Problem I have looking at it, is I'm trying to hit moving targets. On the other side, my whole team only ever plays a top 5 team 15 times combined.

I understand things will change through the season, and I'll have to adjust accordingly. But, it does look really good tbh.

      Sanchez 4.0
      Shaw 4.5 4.5 4.5 4.0
      Salah Fernandes Raphinha Buendia 4.5
      Kane Watkins Toney

Not so bad if you like cheap defenders and 6.5-7.5 attackers. Buendia and 4.5 defender to Smith Rowe and Digne looks OK too.

Go lighter in defence. With four or five 4.5 defenders you can afford 3 maybe 4 heavy hitters (eg mo, bruno, son and/or mahrez/sancho). Two 7.5m strikers and a 5.5-6 5th mf can do the trick.

      Trio of Salah-Sterling-Son works well.

I am on it rt now.

      Robertson-Digne-Shaw-Targett in defence.
      DCL-Tony-Watkins up front.

It is more a matter of "why" rather than of "how". Why you want 3 heavy hitters when they are all bad value unless captained?

I'd like to go the opposite way - one premium (Salah). If Kane moves though, will I be able to stick to it though?

But I tell you, the amount I can do with that 4 mil is a lot, I have 4 properly premium defenders, 3 mid priced mids, 2 mid price strikers.

      TAA Robbo Shaw
      Salah Sancho Raph Gilmore ESR

Foster Davis Lamptey (or other 4.5) Fodder

A reminder to Members actually, auto-renew allows you to lock in whatever price you paid initially, protecting you against future price rises. So if you're on an old price, cancelling will mean that if you come back as a Member you'll sign up on the going rate.

Hi Geoff, Last year I paid £17.50 on the 27th July and in my profile it states 'Renewal: Wednesday 3rd of August 2022'. Does this mean that £17.50 will be taken out of my account on the 3rd August 2022 or will the price have increased?.

Just checked my credit card and £17.50 was taken out on the 27th July 2021 (the anniversary of last years payment) even though in my profile it states Renewal: Wednesday 3rd of August 2022. All good because I am only paying last years rate.
