FPL Masterclass

How important is a strong substitutes’ bench early in the FPL season?

Our new FPL Masterclass series unites three of the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers around: two-time India champion Lateriser, seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar and five-time top 1,000 finisher Tom Freeman.

Between them they have 20 overall ranks in the top 10,000, nine of which were within the top 1k.

They’ll be chipping in with regular Fantasy advice ahead of the start of 2021/22, with opinion on everything from tips for newcomers to captaincy picks.

Our trio of top managers will also be writing for Fantasy Football Scout every week throughout the new season – and only subscribers will be able to read all of their articles in full.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

Having previously provided general advice for FPL managers ahead of the upcoming campaign and discussed proven assets v Fantasy gambles, our panel now ponder: how important is having a strong bench early in the season?

ZOPHAR SAID…

The answer to this depends on how many punts you are taking and how many rotation-prone players are in your squad. The likes of Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) are nailed-on to play every game but if you are going to go with the likes of Riyad Mahrez (£9.0m), Joao Cancelo (£6.0m) etc then you probably need some reliable back-ups.

Rotation isn’t as rife early on in the season as players are still fresh after their summer breaks and fixture congestion due to European competitions hasn’t kicked in yet.

If, like me, you go with more nailed players, then I think a bench with three £4.5m outfielders and a £4.0m goalkeeper is enough. Ideally, I would like two of them to be £4.5m defenders as you actually get some decent point potential there, much more than you would from a £4.5m midfielder.

However, there is always the temptation to go with one £4.0m defender to invest more money in attack and I think this can be done for the first few weeks until you use your first Wildcard. You really need to be confident in the minutes of the players you are picking with this strategy though.

LATERISER SAID…

I’m all for spending your pounds on the pitch and that has always been the case for me. This becomes a lot easier at the start of the season: if you are going in with players who are nailed-on, you don’t really need to worry about having a strong bench.

So the depth of your bench invariably depends on whether you are going in with assets who are susceptible to rotation. If you are opting for Manchester City midfielders or Diogo Jota (£7.5m) then I’d make sure to have to playing outfielders on my bench.

The pool of £4.5m defenders looks really strong this season which is why it shouldn’t be really difficult to have two bench players at that price who are capable of returning something as an auto-substitute. Outside of that, I’ve never spent more than £4.0m on my second goalkeeper (some of the best ‘keeper hauls come against good opposition because of the saves accumulated).

There is no European commitment for teams at the start of the season either and they are very fresh, as well, which is why they’d be less prone to rotation in my opinion. So I’d definitely go with a £4.5m defender and attacker in my squad and then you take a call for your fifth defender based on how secure the rest of your squad is and decide whether you want to spend £4.5m or £4.0m there.

TOM SAID…

At the beginning of the season, not so much. I generally like to keep it cheap as I want my money on the pitch. However, I do like to have a couple of options who can at least bag you some appearance points if needed. So, playing time is key, but anything else feels like a bonus.

As your team value builds, you can then look to beef your bench up ahead of the busy winter schedule when rotation is rife. In the last couple of seasons, I’ve spent around £17.5m of my budget on substitutes in Gameweek 1, which feels about right.

I do think it depends on which type of FPL manager you are, though.

For example, if you like making early transfers at the beginning of the week in an attempt to build team value, getting a good £5.0m option sat first on your bench, like Tomáš Souček (now £6.0m) in 2020/21, is a good idea, just in case your new signing picks up a knock in training before his first outing. A similar strategy could also be useful if you have one or two rotation risks in your starting XI, like Riyad Mahrez or Diogo Jota, or perhaps if COVID-19 is still impacting teams during the season.

Without really knowing anything specific, I would be surprised if Nacho wasn't in the starting 11. He finished last season well. I've got him until the team news puts me off (and then he hauls, just like Willian last season).

It’s a wait and see, but I’m fairly confident it’s his place to lose. Bellerin leaving looks imminent, so it’s up between him and Cedric.

Literally no idea but at the end of last season there seemed to be some rift between Salah and Mane where they weren't passing to each other and it just unsettled the team a bit in terms of scoring opportunities.

I've gambled on three of my defenders playing as wing backs or outright wingers this year and for ESR and Buendia to play more attacking roles than midfield roles.

i love the pick and player, just need to know he's up and running. Also i am bit unsure how they will line up as used their full backs a lot for width to good effect when barnes was out. Keeping a close eye as could impact Fofana minutes depending on if its a back 4 or back 3 (with wing backs)

We need to know how Leicester will setup, with Nacho stepping in and playing exceptionally when whilst Barnes was out, plus Leicester splashing out on another striker he may be looking at another season with around 2000 minutes again.

Really important question this one (bench at start of season). None of the experts talked about timing of wildcard. If you are an early wildcarder then your bench can be quite weak but caveated by the points they do make around rotation risks of your first 11. I am aiming to limp my way to GW 7 or even 10 if Im brave so I just need enough playing subs to get me there.

Regarding Trent, I think there is an opportunity cost. There seem to be some really good uber cheap defenders so picking Trent is choosing not to max out on them. Midfield doesnt seem so good at low levels so money is better spent their imo.

I do like the idea of Cavani for the first few game weeks, I see him being the focal point of United attack early season and he is a fantastic finisher. I have him in my draft at present but he would be much more tempting if priced at 8, an extra 1 over Nacho/Wilson/Antonio etc is steep.

For the first few weeks, yes. He's playing in a very attacking team that likes to score goals, good fixtures, and just increased their attacking potent with Sancho. I've selected him ahead of nacho, as he's more adapted to the premier league, and will have a full ish preseason behind him, unlike when he joined last minute last season. No European commitments initially so he should get his share on minutes from GW 1. Even as a sub he looks dangerous. Easy switch to Bamford in GW 4 if not.

If he's starting every week, he could be FPL gold with Sancho.

My feeling is that he has to start up front every week because his movement and football awareness is like Haaland's and Sancho and Haaland had unbelievable chemistry at Dortmund.

I doubt Rashford or Martial have anywhere near that level of movement, anticipation or football IQ.

Assuming Barnes is fit, how's this:

    Meslier (Foster)
    TAA - Shaw - Cresswell (White, 4.0)
Salah - Bruno - Barnes - Raph (Bissouma)
    Watkins - Wilson - Toney

I look at it, then don't want to drop Bruno or Robertson, so stop looking. Then see he's 3.2% owned and with that run he could be sensational.

One thing I worry about this season is whether COVID affects the number of 'baskets' (teams) we put our 'eggs' (players) in.

For example, my current XI only has representatives from 5 clubs. I've tripled on Liverpool, United and West Ham. And my bench consists of a nailed-ish 4.5 defender, a nailed 4.5 mid, and a (hopefully) cameo regular supersub striker.

Now say if there was a COVID outbreak in the Liverpool camp, for example, that could rule out THREE players from my GW, just like that. We've seen that happen with Tottenham last season. Hence, I'd have to rely on my sorry bench to catch my fall.

In your opinion, do you think it best to avoid triple ups in the season of COVID? Just to avoid the risk of a potential team wipeout?

I overcompensated by taking covid too much into consideration last season. A mistake, in hindsight.

I think they'll just let footballers take daily tests if someone in the team tests positive rather than having to isolate. That combined with the fact that most footballers will be vaccinated this time round I think would make large scale outbreaks at clubs unlikely

Surprised that only one of the three ‘maestros’ in the article even mentions the threat of Covid. Even your nailed on big money players could have games cancelled, catch Covid or have to isolate. Having passengers or rubbish 4.5m mids on your bench is crazy imo.

Have they announced the protocols yet for this season? I know the rules of isolating are changing in terms of only actual positive cases need to isolate, but not sure what effect that will have on games being called off.

      1. Wild Rover
        • 13 Years

They haven’t said yet as far as I know. Although from 16th Aug, double jabbed folk won’t have to isolate if they get ‘pinged’, I doubt it would be the same if there is an outbreak within the club.

Yeah I was surprised that didn't feature more heavily in the article. Not only does it increase the likelihood of postponements but of "injuries" due to COVID happening at short notice or no notice at all.

    4. Ginkapo FPL

      Risk = Likelyhood x severity

I think we overestimate likelyhood. Was it three games cancelled last year out of 380? With max 4 players in an fpl affected.

      Likelyhood is 0.8%
      Severity is 36%

      So risk is 0.3%

Higher odds on Liverpool being uncharacteristically useless

Wilson scored more points per match than Nacho, Bamford, and every other forward in the game except for Kane and Vardy. Criminally underrated on here because he's not exciting. He just scores a load of FPL points, is nailed, on pens, high goal involvement percentage, and decent fixtures if you actually consider them rather just being guided by colours on a ticker.

It’s Nacho’s time to come of age & establish himself as a big hitter I reckon - Wilson is pure quality though

But Nacho’s 11.5 XGi from just 1,450 minutes (without penalties) was insane - and on the eye test he was a God

When you consider Wilson got 13.9 XGi from 2,100 minutes (with 4x penalties) - which in & of itself is excellent - it shows you what we’re dealing with here

(And I really, really rate Wilson btw)
