The best goalkeepers and defenders for Sky Fantasy Football before Overhaul

Our Sky Fantasy Football coverage continues as we assess the best defenders for the start of the season.

We’re only concerned about the first three rounds of matches of 2021/22 here, as the Overhaul kicks in after Gameweek 3.

And if you missed it, check our expert strategy guide with Niall and Luke – who can boast third and fourth-place overall finishes between them – in the video below.

Goalkeepers

Emiliano Martinez, last season’s top-scoring keeper, comes in at £7.2m. Aston Villa sit top of the Season Ticker for the opening three Gameweeks when sorted by defence. The Argentine’s popularity will only increase ahead of the new season kicking off.

Martinez comes with the added bonus of having made 143 saves last season, the most of any goalkeeper not relegated in the last campaign. That will stand him in good stead for the tier points for saves.

In third on the ticker are Brighton, which puts Robert Sanchez (£6.5m) in the Sky spotlight. Offering a decent saving on Martinez, the Seagulls netminder will appeal to those wanting to use budget elsewhere – but he does come with the downside of not making too many saves, averaging only 2.34 stops per 90 minutes.

Illan Meslier (£6.9m), meanwhile, was far busier: he was just two saves behind Martinez overall. Leeds are low down on the defensive ticker, though that should afford their keeper the chance to make plenty of stops.

While Alisson (£7.8m) has great fixtures, the appeal of his defensive colleagues and the lack of save bonus means the Liverpool keeper is set to be overlooked.

At the other end of the market, Daniel Bachmann (£6.3m) will be one of the cheapest starting goalkeepers in Sky Fantasy this season.

Watford kept a total of 23 clean sheets in the Championship in 2020/21, with their defence even more watertight after Xisco Munoz was appointed as head coach.

Defenders

The best mid-price and premium FPL defenders for 2021/22 1

Trent Alexander-Arnold (£10.5m) is the prime Reds candidate at the back given a potent mix of clean sheet potential, attacking returns and ability to garner tier points for shots and especially passes. The only slight issue is that Liverpool host Chelsea in Gameweek 3, though that is unlikely to put many off the right-back given his attacking prowess and opening two games against Norwich (a) and Burnley (H).

Andrew Robertson (£10.1m) marginally outscored Alexander-Arnold last season, in four more starts, by 201 to 196. The Scotsman is also a big tier-points threat in terms of passes and tackles, though shoots far less often than his full-back colleague. Robertson managed 19 goal attempts last season, compared to 55 for his teammate on the opposite wing. However, the former (57) did beat the latter (44) for total Sky bonus points in 2020/21.

Ibrahima Konate (£8.8m), incidentally, looks set to start the season at the back so offers a cut-price alternative to those flying full-backs.

While Manchester City’s first three games are not overly appealing, Ruben Dias (£10.6m) could offer an enticing captaincy option on the Saturday of Gameweek 3. The Citizens face Arsenal at home in the day’s early kick-off, meaning Sky players can see those two teamsheets before the day’s deadline.

Dias finished as the top-scoring defender in Sky in 2021/22 and was streets ahead of the competition for tier 2 passing bonus, so even when clean sheets are lacking, can more than compensate in other areas.

On the flip side, Vladimir Coufal (£8.1m) and Aaron Cresswell (£8.3m) were seldom in the mix for passing bonus – although the former was fond of a tackle or two.

Rather, their appeal came from attacking returns with eight assists apiece.

While they’re not great long-term holds in Sky because of the lack of bonus, a decent opening run of matches and the fact that they play on a Sunday/Monday in the first two Gameweeks makes them a consideration as captaincy contenders.

The Aston Villa back four all present alternatives to Martinez or potential complements for those brave enough to double up. Ezri Konsa (£7.5m) could offer great value, having been on the end of more big chances (seven) than any other defender last season.

But like Coufal and Cresswell, the lack of bonus point accumulation means that they are simply fixture-led short-term plays until the first Overhaul.

With uncertainty around the fitness of several Brighton defenders at the time of writing, Joel Veltman (£7.2m) is a cheap route into the Seagulls’ backline. The versatile Dutchman made 25 starts in 2020/21 and should garner extra game time considering the imminent departure of Ben White (£7.8m) and injury doubt surrounding Tariq Lamptey (£7.2m).

Graham Potter’s love of playing out from the back means that Albion are one of the few clubs outside the usual ‘elite’ who can offer defenders that pick up passing bonus, too.

For just that bit extra, Lewis Dunk (£8.2m) gives you an added goal threat and indeed finished seventh among Sky defenders for points last season.

If you are seeking Leicester captaincy coverage for the Monday of Gameweek 2, Wesley Fofana (£7.9m) is the cheapest option in the Foxes’ defence. However, he may have to compete with Jonny Evans (£8.3m) and Caglar Soyuncu (£8.2m) for pitch time if Brendan Rodgers uses a back four.

Soyuncu had an injury-affected season but is one to watch, having gained bonus points in more than half of his appearances in 2020/21.

Lucas Digne (£8.5m), with 121 points, was well behind Everton’s top-scoring defender Michael Keane (£8.3m) last season. He’s very much in the same boat as Cresswell and Coufal: capable of racking up attacking and defensive returns in the first three Gameweeks but having limited long-term appeal because of his bonus aversion.

Ben Chilwell (£9.6m) may prove a tad expensive before the Overhaul considering Chelsea’s opening run. However, the Blues do face Crystal Palace at home in Gameweek 1 and were the league’s meanest defence over the second half of the season.

Slightly cheaper but just as appealing is Antonio Rudiger (£9.0m), who was a regular accumulator of tier 2 passing bonus upon Thomas Tuchel’s appointment.

Liam Cooper (£6.9m) had a similar magnetism to Sky bonus as Rudiger, although in both Leeds and Chelsea’s cases, there is a little uncertainty over who gets the nod at centre-half.

Rate my triple big hitter team!

    Bachmann
    Lowton White VVD
    Buendia ESR Bruno Salah
    Kane Toney Nacho

    Foster Gilmour Coady manquillo.

Can easily do VVD to 5.5 and manquillo to 5 if need be

The value of premiums is in the ability to captain one of them so this feels a little suboptimal in my eyes.

      Different. I like the bravery.

But alas it's a lot of faith in Kane, Bruno and Salah. I don't think Bruno and Kane are good enough to justify skewing the team that much.

Cant help but think Bruno and Kane were the 2 highest scorers last season though... And Salah is Salah. Tempted with Vardy or Auba (that is brave) for first GW to cover kane incase he isn't in gw1.

Also, if Arsenal sign Maddison or similar its back to the drawing board with ESR

Yeah I agree the defence isn't the best, but wouldn't say poor... White should be great value at Arsenal for 4.5. Underpriced imo. As I say VVD could easily be Digne or Shaw, which I'd be tempted to do instead. And invest the mil in defence elsewhere.

You are laughing if all the big hitters are head and shoulders above everyone else (non captains do score points too). I would get the 5.5 and 5.0 defenders (or even another 4.5 defender and use the 0.5 elsewhere).

I like it myself. That team could do well. However question marks over VVD fitness might be better off with a Digne/Cresswell/Shaw or even a Dias/Chilwell in the meantime.

Keep an eye on Kane's fitness news and whether Iheanacho is firmly in Rogers starting plans though.

      2/10
      VVD not 100% for GW1
Lowton as a starter with Burnley's horrific fixtures.
      Kane deffo not starting GW1
Neither ESR or 'nacho are nailed.
I'm not on the Toney bandwagon.
There is a chance you only field 9 players for GW1.

Not template enough for you? 😉 I joke..

Couple of good points, ie kane and VVD. They are a wait and see. Can easily be swapped out before gw1S

Lowton won't start every week for me, although Burnley love clean sheet historically.

ESR nailed unless arsenal sign another CAM. So monitoring. Nacho was on fire last season so would seem daft to drop him imo.

Toney who knows. Worth the gamble with his high ownership.

Other names to throw in midfield are Trossard and Townsend, Vardy.

I have Robertson and Bachmann from that team you listed myself. I am a bit perplexed as to why so many seem seem to so Robertson adverse. For many it seems to be TAA or nothing.

KDB I would not trust because of his fitness issues he looked fit to drop after the Euros.

Is that Michael Keane? He's probably 3rd or 4th choice CB for Everton now. Mina does his job better, and Godfrey and Holgate offer more pace to the backline.

Godfrey (£5.0m) would be my choice.

Closest I could get is Dunk - need to hold for a time likely to hit one of his goals but cs chances equal to most of the above. Other half possible one is Keane I suppose who matched Digne last time out for 0.5 less.

Have seen Chambers touted as possible starting RB - any chance of that in your view? If so is he best 4.5 at Arsenal?

      1. Brosef Stalin

Chambers best 4.5 until White signs. He will need time to bed in and their early fixtures are horrific anyway. Might WC him in after GW3.

Chambers is very risky imo. Cedric apparently impressing Arteta (unless that's just a marketing ploy). If he's nailed, he's better than White for sure, but he's not right now imo. I wouldn't get either.

Might as well get Veltman over Dunk, no?

Dunk maybe is another 5.0m option.
I have looked at Coleman but decided to go higher or lower in price. Rafa already has made noises about Coleman's professionalism. If he is still a starter on even a 2/3 ratio I think he could be worth the .5 saving on Digne. Obviously you will be hoping for the Rafa effect at Everton tough to break down etc.
Also Coleman has played at CB for Ireland in three so there is versatility there.

Thanks. Looking for someone who semi rotates with my other defenders, preferably. I already have Digne, but rotation isn't really an issue since they have good fixtures. I could bench them bother potentially in 7 (and 8). Is he better than Reguillon and Ritchie is my next question. I could go with Coufal but I have a bit of a fixture clash.

        1. Wrong Captain Choice - Ag i…
          • 14 Years

A right I see what your logic is now. As for Ritchie I would not go near him. It is Newcastle as simple as that and for me Newcastle's only viable fpl option is Wilson. I like the thought of getting Regullion though. He looked very good in patches last season. Plus I would trust Nuno from a defensive standpoint more then Jose. Because Nuno will want that keep ball possession based stuff.

Another poster gave you the answer Tierney I would agree with that choice. But I have semi gambled and went for chambers 4.5m decent preseason - Bellerin likely being sold and only competition Cedric. I will likely bench Chambers gw2-3 anyway. White is another option when he moves to Arsenal - more secure.

I am just not sure about the idea of doubling up on any defence this year. Just a personal preference. I did think of Digne and Pickford at the start of the season initial drafts. But ended up going for cheaper 4.5 options instead.

If I remember there was a poster who made a convincing argument that Everton's early fixtures are not that good for defensive returns. I am not sure I agree with this as surely by Rafa's nature he will improve clean sheets.

For sure, Tierney is pretty much the first player in my team haha.
'Doubling up' wouldn't be every week, as I could see Coleman on the bench half the time, but I've never really consciously factored doubling up into my decision-making, except for rotational reasons.

Not excited by Coleman though. Reguillon I might go for if we see wingbacks at some point in preseason, though I'd like a good GW1 fixture, preferably. Perhaps Coufal is best, even if I have to sacrifice optimal rotation. Otherwise drop to a 4.5 and pocket the change.

            Thanks for the feedback!

Ah grand helps me figure out my decision making. Personally I am not sold on West Ham (Coufal etc) they were very Lingard dependant last season. If they do not manage to loan him how will it affect the side. Plus in my mind they are still one hit wonders. Plus there is injury prone Antonio. I might be a bit biased though since I captained Soucek last season when he got a red!

I think Semedo is one to monitor ahead of their run from GW4-GW-7. Particularly if you want with a 5m Villa option for their good opening fixtures.

Feels like there are a good number with potential in that bracket, but until they secure a place I’d opt for Coufal.

    Which one would you prefer?

    A) Bruno, Alli, Iheanacho, Coufal
    B) Sancho, Son, Toney, Coufal
    C) Sancho, Alli, DCL, Robertson

Trying to attack the GW 1-3 fixtures and then WC (international break and post TDD) - thoughts?

    Sanchez (Foster)

Yes, I for example have Watkins and Buendia even though my plan is to WC later. Buendia over Greenwood who will likely share game time with Cavani imo. If plan is certainly to WC after gw3 there is no reason not to triple up Avl.

My thoughts exactly. A lot of RMTs are great if WCs didn't exist. I think hanging onto your WC it diminishes in impact over time. GW3 is the sweet spot I feel.

I believe that strategy is too greedy. There will be second fixture change around gw 8-10 an I believe it's better time to WC. There is risk that you don't have enough data that early and you get into trouble if your WC fails.

Can totally see where you're coming from. It is a bold/risky strategy to try and capture all those points early on - double/triple ups may not pay off, etc.

My thoughts on WC in GW8-10 is that the player values go up and you can't quite get everybody that you want in your team. By GW3 you have a good idea of how the starters are and where they play on the pitch. Get to see what the new teams and teams with new managers do. Granted it's not a ton of data, but enough to try to steal the march on the rest.

Do we actually know this after gw3? Players returning from holidays after Euros may mean that we zero idea about what Pep for example is going to do. And not every team is not settled that early. Selling Avl assets to get Leeds players can be done without WC. A hit or two could be enough to jump on some bandwagons. Early WC fail destroyed my last season.

            • 13 Years

Late WC did it for me last season. Left it too late to be able to fit in the early bandwagons. I think the WC haunts a lot of people!

I think in any GW we don't know what Pep is going to do, I give up on predicting on that guy. I might WC Dias in though - surely he's rotation proof enough.

I don't think it is cost effective to have a third premium mid. Premiums are only cost effective when captain. Having two premiums to rotate captaincy makes sense, but three is too many I think.

To answer your question though. I would go A, with AWB in place of Shaw for the first couple of GWs. Nacho over Wilson for me.

I agree. I'm finding it hard justifying a 3rd premium mid specially with questions marks around all of them (Son/Sancho/Mahrez).

I like it, but check on England players. Have heard Pickford will be rested initially. Wonder if Chilwell will be as well.

Why not start Cancelo? I’d wager on him returning more than Alli in that game.

I think so, pretty easy downgrade to Toney. Yet, Toney is annoying asset, if he starts well his price will start rising fast, but if he doesn't it may plummet soon and upgrading him means downgrade and probably -4 elsewhere.

But if you select a player who is prone to benching, and rationalize it to make it sound better - for example Mahrez - than your logic is also questionable. Who can say that Pep wont come up with some crazy line up that none of us have expected, and bench Mahrez.

Look at the numbers Mahrez puts out , there will always be rotation at City, so have no City lol?

Of course no. But I think it's sensible to adopt a wait-and-see strategy with City and Pep and only then try to deduce with more certainty who's gonna play.
You can't argue that 9.0 benched Mahrez completely ruins any strategy that you previously had with him in your team.
He is just to expensive to be a rotation risk.
You need a crystal bowl to guess Pep in GW1.
              Cheers.

Couldn't disagree more. GW1 is the best time to own Mahrez because he's one of the only City players who didn't play in the Euros/Copa and has had a full preseason. That makes him a near certain starter for at least the first two games imo. Pep is unpredictable but he's not going to pick Sterling or Foden or Jesus who aren't even back in training yet over someone who is fully rested and fully fit.

Agree with this, also I think KDB not training either right? Mahrez is a good pick for the start. Will be between him, Gundogan, Torres and Bernado as the attacking players early on.

Well I don't say you don't have a point, but Pep has burned me so many times that even when the facts point to something, I still have issues to put faith in a rotation-prone City player. Especially when you have Vardy or Son only 1 million more expensive.
                  Good luck with Mahrez.

Cheers Koba! My team looks like this-

        Sanchez (Steele)
TAA - Robbo - Coufal - Tierney (Manquillo)
Salah - Bruno - Raph - Buendia (Harrison)
        Watkins - Antonio (Obafemi).

The plan is to switch between 4-4-2 and 3-5-2 deending on fixtures.
I just wondered if its better to go with Grealish and have fix 4-4-2 or to go with Buendia and Harrison and have flexibility.

Buendia created 83 chances last time he played in the Prem (yet somehow Cantwell seemed to get all the limelight). I would expect him to get more than 7 assists this time at Villa.

Latest - pretty template but a couple of fun picks.

    Sanchez, 4.0
    TAA, Shaw, Digne, (Ayling, Hoever)
    Salah, Fernandes, Jota, Bowen (Brownhill)
    Watkins, Antonio, Welbeck

    0.5 itb.

Definitely a little punty on Welbeck and Bowen but they have the fixtures and I like to have a bit of fun.
The extra 0.5 can get me to a 7.0mid of Toney up front if it looks like the move to make.

I'm a little worried about double Villa attack - think I prefer double Liverpool, also the whole Grealish stuff...
Also can do the Welbeck > Toney move with my spare money straight up - I just don't know anything about Toney and don't want to do what others are just because...a little stubborn.

i've been trying to make that work - just don't like the cheaper midfield options that much.

Jota Bowen Welbeck is too punty. Shaw might not make GW1.

          Shaw Digne> Robbo Veltman
          Jota > Raphinha.

I might be taking you to the template way. Apologies.

            ha - all good.

I'm assuming between Jota, Bowen and Welbeck I'll need to make 2 transfers in the first 3 weeks or so - onto whoever is the right player - and I'm not convinced anyone knows who it is. Toney maybe, Raphinha, Barnes, Hamez, Torres, ESR....there are so many in that price range I figure I'll got for the 3 with the best fixtures and see what happens.

Ayling coming in for Shaw if he misses is ok with me too, latest reports say he'll be fine.

I think a max of 1-2 of Jota, Bowen, Welbeck. Too risky this early on the season to fall away on those punts.

    Meslier
    Tierney - TAA - Chilwell - Walker
    Torres - Trossard - Pepe - Havertz (c)
    Watkins - Kane

    Bench:
    Krul - Harrison - Rodrigo - Fofana

my previous draft had the exact same defense (including gks) - now I could get Cavani in for Rodrigo, downgrade Pépé to ESR, Torres to a 5.0 mid and then use the extra fund (£2) to upgrade Trossard to a £8.5 priced mid

He’s Brentford’s main man. The reality is that everything is going to go through him.

If he wasn’t on pens he’d probably be £6.0 but I think that sways it up to £6.5m.

I can understand not wanting him, but the appeal is that Brentford aren’t going to go through a whole season not scoring a goal, and when they do he’s likely going to have some part in it.

He has a high ceiling. He could end up just like almost every other striker who tore up the Championship and then came down to earth with a bump in the Premier League.

But he could end up being the exception to the rule.
