FPL Masterclass

How important is team value in FPL and when are early transfers advisable?

Our new FPL Masterclass series unites three of the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers around: two-time India champion Lateriser, seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar and five-time top 1,000 finisher Tom Freeman.

Between them, they have 20 overall ranks in the top 10,000, nine of which were within the top 1k.

They’ll be chipping in with regular Fantasy advice ahead of the start of 2021/22, with opinion on everything from tips for newcomers to captaincy picks.

You can also see Zophar and Lateriser on the FPL Wire podcast, the latest instalment of which can be viewed below:

Our trio of top managers will be writing for Fantasy Football Scout every week throughout the new season – and only subscribers will be able to read all of their articles in full.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

Having previously provided general advice for FPL managers ahead of the upcoming campaign, discussed proven assets v Fantasy gambles and mused on the importance of a strong bench, our panel are now asked: how important is team value and do you like to wait before making transfers?

TOM SAID…

My advice would be: don’t get too obsessed with team value. And if you don’t feel ready to make a transfer, certainly don’t let a price change force your hand. If you are making good decisions, which often takes time, team value tends to take care of itself.

However, if you do have a definite move planned out in your head, there is no harm in moving in early, just ensure that you have a decent first substitute in place. In this situation, I’d feel more confident if the player doesn’t play again before the next deadline. It gets a bit more complicated if he is involved in European competition or a domestic cup, and if that’s the case, the risk factor does rise a bit.

I like making most of my transfers on a Friday night, once I’ve watched all of the midweek games, taken in all of the press conferences and processed the team news. Another key reason, and perhaps the most important of all, is that I tend to make better decisions later in the week, when I’ve given myself enough time to think.

Losing £0.1m here and there won’t define your season, and remember, there is always a solution!

ZOPHAR SAID…

I think the importance of team value varies from season to season. The year that Leicester City won the league, we had money to burn with the likes of Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy performing like premiums with a budget price tag.

Generally speaking though, I think building team value is quite important, especially in the first half of the season. Early doors, more players are active and you see the early bandwagons often going up £0.3m in price between Gameweeks. The player you want to sell could be dropping by £0.2m, so in these cases, there is a massive price swing.

Last year was a bit different with COVID so I used to wait till the last possible minute before making my transfers as we didn’t know which teams/players would test positive. Usually, if a player I want is going up in price and doesn’t have a midweek European fixture, I tend to buy him on the Monday/Tuesday. I refuse to make any transfers until the Gameweek is completed at the least, as you might end up having other fires to put out and your budget could completely change.

If there is no price rise for a player or I see only a possible £0.1m increase in the week, I prefer to wait for the managers’ press conference on a Friday. Information is everything in FPL and we often get clues about team selection and strategy from head coaches. It’s not just information, it’s also your own thought process that gets time to settle. Very often, the player I want on a Friday is very different to the one I wanted earlier in the week. There is less chance of a kneejerk emotional reaction or chasing points and I can consider what I have seen in the European matches and eliminate any biases that might have crept into my decision-making.

LATERISER SAID…

I was very much against making early transfers and building team value last season but 2020/21 was definitely the anomaly. It was a year in which the world was in lockdown and there were a lot of last-minute cases of games being postponed or players not being available for matches.

It is not going to be the case with me this season – COVID permitting. I feel that, for the first half of the season, building team value is important and if you are sure about what move to make, it is fine to finalise it early in the Gameweek. It also helps with peace of mind and not over-complicating things.

In the second half of the season, though, rotation kicks in and it is best to wait until you make your transfers because the number of weeks in which the built-team value will be an advantage will keep reducing.

I’m not overly worried about team value, however. For me, if you’re not building team value, it only means that you need to find a bargain relative to the competition in just one position and I’ll always back myself to do that. And one thing you need to be sure about is that you’re not transferring players in simply because their value is increasing.

Once you have zeroed in on a player, monitor the price change websites and make the transfer early if the player is expected to rise in value and if the player you are selling is expected to fall.

Last season I picked my team focusing the first 10 gws but i ended up WCing in gw4. So i think this season it is better to focus only in the first 4-5 gws

GW after first IB / Close of transfer window is ideal. a week to see if any new signing impact your plans. So GW5/6 for me too.

Son and Cavani to cover for Bruno missing.

    Sanchez
    TAA – Shaw/AWB - Digne - Tierney
    Salah - Son - Jota
    Cavani - Watkins - Antonio
    Begovic – Thomas – ESR/Townsend - Brownhill

I think Werner is one to watch this season. It was so clear last year that he was low on confidence, confused about his positioning and adapting to a new team and league.

It's a big if, but if he gets some confidence in front of goal, like he did in Germany, he could vastly improve on last seasons output. He should get lots of chances playing for a very good Chelsea side and it looks doubtful they are going to sign a striker this window.

Although I do think not having penalties is a big disadvantage in a race for golden boot.

Son could be a dark horse for an outsider with a chance for golden boot I reckon. Should be on pens and playing up front if Kane leaves, he got 17 goals last season. If he could get that again with 5-6 pens he'll be right up there.

Salah will miss some games to AFCON too.

Not a great use of funds in my opinion. 11m on goalkeepers is wayyy too much. Soucek or Dallas on the bench also seems unnecessary. I would go with a cheaper bench and upgrade Maupay and a midfielder.

        Hey,

Thanks for the article, useful for me as a first timer. But could someone please have a go at explaining - or direct me to a link which explains - how price changes work? I'm getting the impression that its based more on broad buying/selling patterns rather than strictly performance based..?

To use an example, Raphinha is obv a popular choice b/c he's widely regarded as underpriced. Does this mean his value is likely to increase in wk1 due to ownership levels, or would it go up only in response to how many people buy him between gw1 & gw2?

It will only go up/down depending on how many TRANSFER IN/OUT he gets between GW1 and GW2.

Higher owned players normally requires more transfer in/out for price change as compared to low owned players. But their are some exceptional cases when FPL throw a curveball by increasing/decreasing price randomly.

More transfers out, in is a nominal number for all players.

So with some of the obvious fixture swings, lets say I want to buy Chilwell from gw7, it would be advisable to get the transfer done asap?

Do you think Chilwell scores well in GWs 1-6? If not, then he may drop in price by GW7.

It depends mostly on how many transfers in and out a player has. I think there is a threshold for each player for a price rise or fall (depending on how highly owned they are). E.g. Salah might need 300k net transfers in/out in order to rise/fall by 0.1. A player who is only 1% owned could rise with only 10k transfers in. So someone like Tsmikias would shoot up in price quite quickly if Robbo got a long term injury, for example, because there would be way more managers bringing him in than selling.

Transfer players on Fixtures or have long term team and only transfer players when you have too.

Do you think you are more likely or less likely to go for Buendia in your team if Grealish leaves Villa?

Possibly less. If Grealish stays at Villa, teams will tend to double up on him which gives Buendia potentially more space to create and get the ball in dangerous areas. Also if Buendia is on set-pieces, Grealish wins an awful lot of frees in the final 3rd.

Also Grealish could assist a few goals for Buendia. Villa are a better team with Grealish and simply put, better team = more chances for attacking returns.

Not that hot on Buendia. Not much of a goal threat and think its a certainty that Grealish leaving will worsen their output.

Think Watkins is still worth starting with as he is more proven and still did ok when Grealish was out

Wildcard will probably happen in Week 2 (or maybe 3), but for now I'm quietly confident with this lot.
442 mostly, but 352 and 343 also likely

        Pickford
        Robertson / Dias / Wan-Bissaka / White
        Salah / Son / Havertz / Saka
        Calvert-Lewin / Watkins

Begovic / Coady (or other 4.5 - maybe Dier) / Gilmour / King

if you're going to wildcard in week 2, why would you start with Dias and Son?

Tis a fine question - the last bit of tinkering swapped Son for Sancho.
I'm thinking take Son for the long term regardless of Man City in GW1

To be honest, I'm quite happy with that and the Wilcard may stay until much later than a knee jerk GW3 re-org.
Dier is a though - are Wolves going to as strong defensively without Nuno, and without Alderweireld about, I think Dier will be in the team (probably as part of a back 3)

        Thoughts on this?

        Sanchez

        TAA Robbo Shaw Fofana

        ESR Salah Fernandes Buendia

        Watkins Antonio

        Foster Raphina Ayling Davis

Just playing ESR over Raphina for gameweek one for now... could change. Looks pretty balanced to me, maybe over invested in defence and 4-4-2 a move away from the normal 3-4-3. Any advice appreciated.

        Bachmann

        Nacho - Wilson - Jimenez

A bit too much risk for my liking.

Jimenez is a wait and see after his injury and his tricky first fixtures imo. Dier far from nailed. Coady tough fixtures and low ceiling. Havertz and Bowen might be rotated.

And Mane over Salah just seems an unnecessary risk if I'm being honest.

The fixture swing ~GW4 is a reason not to double-up. But then again if they both start super strong, then why not. I like Raphinha - was my best, most consistent player last year.

        Man United update;

"After further testing yesterday [Thursday] and today [Friday], we can confirm that there are no positive cases within the first team group.

Following consultation with the Premier League, they are satisfied that all COVID protocols have been followed correctly and the squad can return to training immediately"

Last year I made a couple of mistakes and took out good players to hop on bandwagons which gain me a bit of extra value but lost a fair bit of points, made my self this note:

Use transfers wisely, focus on taking out the weakest link, not the next bandwagon.
If you can combine then fine obviously.

Took him out today, was able to spread the funds across a range of 4.5-5.5 players which give me a lot more flexibility.

Nobody is a must have. If you feel your team scores more without him than with him, then leave him out.

I'm thinking you could profit saving the TAA money on 5.5-5.0M defenders given TAA has rarely done amazing at the start. The issue I'm having is that I know I would want him back at some point in the first 8 weeks and he could get good attacking returns even if Liverpool underperform with clean sheets. I came to the conclusion it's just easier keeping him in there but there's an argument that if you've in a position where you'd like to upgrade to a Son for example, TAA could be downgraded potentially.

            Yeah precisely this, you'll have people on both sides of the fence for me personally;

            A) I've spread funds to create a decent captain strategy for the majority of the season
            B) The next thing to achieve for me personally is decent squad depth which I've also managed to tweak and do (minus a substitute goalkeeper)
            C) I'd have to break up B) to get TAA in, so for me the question is squad depth vs TAA + slightly weaker overall team

          I on 7.5 , 4.5 , 4.5 , 4.0 , 4.0
Like my Mids an Att so does feel I should downgrade TAA for better overall defence and subs

Okay so you're on a set and forget defence then? Presume your two 4.0s are Ono and someone who doesn't play?

You comfortable with that despite the lack of flexibility?

          Must-have is just a very manager/individual/person-specific classification

          One man’s must-have is another man’s I’ll-chance-it-without-him

But TAA is in the “must-have” bracket for more managers than most (myself included) so make of that what you will

Only you can decide what bracket he’s in for you - no point asking someone else to do your homework

Note: Liverpool’s weak defence conceded 8 goals in the last 13 games/34% of the season (literally best in the league over that stretch - Leeds & Chelsea were next best on 11 goals conceded - and that was without VVD, Gomez & Konate)

Yep, also a very sensible way of putting it. Just depends what each individual manager is after.

          Not a must have

GW1 budget means 2 mill over Digne say goes a long way - buys another player really. Plenty are opting out of Bruno for Sancho and TAA to Digne say is a similar saving. Just depends on how risk averse you are and how you spend the cash.
