FPL Masterclass

How important is team value in FPL and when are early transfers advisable?

Our new FPL Masterclass series unites three of the best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers around: two-time India champion Lateriser, seven-time top 10k finisher Zophar and five-time top 1,000 finisher Tom Freeman.

Between them, they have 20 overall ranks in the top 10,000, nine of which were within the top 1k.

They’ll be chipping in with regular Fantasy advice ahead of the start of 2021/22, with opinion on everything from tips for newcomers to captaincy picks.

You can also see Zophar and Lateriser on the FPL Wire podcast, the latest instalment of which can be viewed below:

Our trio of top managers will be writing for Fantasy Football Scout every week throughout the new season – and only subscribers will be able to read all of their articles in full.

FPL pre-season: Trossard hits hat-trick from wing-back role 1

Having previously provided general advice for FPL managers ahead of the upcoming campaign, discussed proven assets v Fantasy gambles and mused on the importance of a strong bench, our panel are now asked: how important is team value and do you like to wait before making transfers?

TOM SAID…

My advice would be: don’t get too obsessed with team value. And if you don’t feel ready to make a transfer, certainly don’t let a price change force your hand. If you are making good decisions, which often takes time, team value tends to take care of itself.

However, if you do have a definite move planned out in your head, there is no harm in moving in early, just ensure that you have a decent first substitute in place. In this situation, I’d feel more confident if the player doesn’t play again before the next deadline. It gets a bit more complicated if he is involved in European competition or a domestic cup, and if that’s the case, the risk factor does rise a bit.

I like making most of my transfers on a Friday night, once I’ve watched all of the midweek games, taken in all of the press conferences and processed the team news. Another key reason, and perhaps the most important of all, is that I tend to make better decisions later in the week, when I’ve given myself enough time to think.

Losing £0.1m here and there won’t define your season, and remember, there is always a solution!

ZOPHAR SAID…

I think the importance of team value varies from season to season. The year that Leicester City won the league, we had money to burn with the likes of Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy performing like premiums with a budget price tag.

Generally speaking though, I think building team value is quite important, especially in the first half of the season. Early doors, more players are active and you see the early bandwagons often going up £0.3m in price between Gameweeks. The player you want to sell could be dropping by £0.2m, so in these cases, there is a massive price swing.

Last year was a bit different with COVID so I used to wait till the last possible minute before making my transfers as we didn’t know which teams/players would test positive. Usually, if a player I want is going up in price and doesn’t have a midweek European fixture, I tend to buy him on the Monday/Tuesday. I refuse to make any transfers until the Gameweek is completed at the least, as you might end up having other fires to put out and your budget could completely change.

If there is no price rise for a player or I see only a possible £0.1m increase in the week, I prefer to wait for the managers’ press conference on a Friday. Information is everything in FPL and we often get clues about team selection and strategy from head coaches. It’s not just information, it’s also your own thought process that gets time to settle. Very often, the player I want on a Friday is very different to the one I wanted earlier in the week. There is less chance of a kneejerk emotional reaction or chasing points and I can consider what I have seen in the European matches and eliminate any biases that might have crept into my decision-making.

LATERISER SAID…

I was very much against making early transfers and building team value last season but 2020/21 was definitely the anomaly. It was a year in which the world was in lockdown and there were a lot of last-minute cases of games being postponed or players not being available for matches.

It is not going to be the case with me this season – COVID permitting. I feel that, for the first half of the season, building team value is important and if you are sure about what move to make, it is fine to finalise it early in the Gameweek. It also helps with peace of mind and not over-complicating things.

In the second half of the season, though, rotation kicks in and it is best to wait until you make your transfers because the number of weeks in which the built-team value will be an advantage will keep reducing.

I’m not overly worried about team value, however. For me, if you’re not building team value, it only means that you need to find a bargain relative to the competition in just one position and I’ll always back myself to do that. And one thing you need to be sure about is that you’re not transferring players in simply because their value is increasing.

Once you have zeroed in on a player, monitor the price change websites and make the transfer early if the player is expected to rise in value and if the player you are selling is expected to fall.

Shaw might not make it GW1.
Antonio over Watkins if Grealish to city. Rest looks good.
Also Prefer Veltman Ayling over Fofana White. I assume you rotate them.

watkins did just fine last season when grealish was injured.

Don't see the point worrying about shaw week 1. would rather be set up for the following games rather than book transfers in, and increase chance of wildcard.

    A Digne (442)
    B Sarr/Benhrama/Traore(352)
    C Welbeck(343)

Have No Villa attack so was thinking Traore/Ghazi.

They’re also linked with Pogba in Le Sport this morning

As a United fan I’d personally drive him from Carrington to Melwood or Kirkby or wherever the hell they train these days & pay Liverpool €50m to take him

He’d bring the club down from the inside out

Have it right. His tw*t of an agent suggested Pogba would be good for Liverpool. Nobody at Liverpool has said any such thing.

A space on the bench: there are noises coming out of Anfield raving about young Harvey Elliott. Reckon he's due a breakout season. Haven't heard anything of Curtis Jones for some time.

    New Draft. Fairly Content.

    Bachmann
    TAA Robbo Digne Veltman
    Salah Son Mahrez Raphinha
    Wilson Antonio

    Ayling Brownhill.

0.5 ITB For Mahrez> Sancho whenever Sancho looks good.

        442 isnt really exciting.
You see for me its a choice between

        Digne/Welbeck/Benhrama/Sarr/B Traore.

Digne seems the most sensible out of those. So went the boring way.

it makes sense. For me it comes down to Digne in a 4-4-2 or ESR in a 3-5-2 and Digne feels like the safer pick for the start of the season.

It should be Digne vs a 6.0 mid not a 5.5 mid. Unless you cant have a 4.0 defender and you need a bench.

Yeah a 4.0 GK & 4.0 defender as 3rd sub gives a nice free 1.0 to play with

Even with Covid I’ve no intention of dipping into my third sub - be suprised if I ever need to this side of first Wildcard

4.5 def first sub, 4.5 mid second sub is plenty of bench strength I reckon

      Really decent

Like the 0.5 itb but the obvious point is if Sancho looks good then it's probably not 0.5 by the time you want to make the transfer.

      1. Weeb Kakashi

I think it will be. Because it will be my first transfer. No matter when it happens I will pull the trigger. Ideally in GW3 because Mahrez has Norwich in GW2.

Okay - that could work. As I say I do like the 0.5 itb and aim to get it too if half possible. Just wary of all those United fans driving prices crazy. Shaw's current ownership is berserk by most rational analyses - different parameters for United players?

Yes the United effect is a tad too much as compared to the others.
Sancho wont probably start GW1. Unless he scores a Goal or something he wont rise till GW2. After GW2 deadline im pulling the trigger so ig it should be fine.

TAA, Shaw, Digne and White as first sub and gw1 substitute for Shaw are basically nailed in my team. The idea is that I can start them every week and use all my transfers with attacking players. When Everton fixtures turn sour, it's WC time anyway.

If you choose good players your team value should go up. If you choose crap players your team value should go down.

But FPL is increasingly becoming about the start you make. More active players at the beginning means more price movements and with more information available once the GWs go by means the start is where you can get ahead when everyone has less information.

Unfortunately, it isn't that easy to predict which teams and players are going to get you the points to get off to that fast start.

My experience last season was the exact reverse and that team value was comparatively static early on but only took off around midseason when the pool of players narrowed. It was a question of getting on the established mid to late season template choices early then that caused value to shoot up.

A good few of the players I made a significant profit on by getting at base price or 0.1 off were

      Nacho
      Barnes
      Gundo
      Bamford
      Bruno
      Stones
      Dias

Of those from memory only Bruno was a really early bolter. Bamford iirc took a little time to become really popular - there was prejudice against Leeds well into the first 10 matches.

    A or B?
    A) Toney, Greenwood, Son, 4.0 Defender

    B) Antonio, Sancho, Buendia, 4.5 Defender

Already at 15% ownership as well which I find quite surprising given the fixtures and lack of attacking threat - still a solid option @ 4.5 though

He will improve a defence which has already shown signs of improvement last season. I think he's the best 4.5 option tbh.

Huh? Fixtures are very good. I've got him in rotation with Ayling: White GW1 and 4, Ayling GW2-3

    Best option out of these?

    1) Shaw, Digne, Buendia, Antonio & Nacho
    2) Coufal, 4.5 def, Mahrez, Antonio & Toney
    3) Coufal, 4.5 def, Mahrez, Antonio & Buendia
    4) Coufal, Shaw, Mahrez, Buendia & Toney

4.5 def will rotate with White so will probably go with Ayling or Veltman.

Out of interest when does FPL finalise squads by giving everyone a price? Is it post TDD? Is this predicated on the 25 man squads that are handed in?

There are a few Palace players for instance I expect to make match day squads - not from week 1 so this is just a theoretical enquiry - but who are U23 players in principle who may not be named in the final 25.

It's common for those kinds of players to be added and priced AFTER they play a match.

        That was my guess

Thinking of Palace though I think it possible that we won't have 25 squad of players who have appeared previously - rather 23 "first teamers" and a couple of promoted youth players. Rak Sakyi (a real prospect) could well be named in 25 man squad as 4.5 mid as could Hannam as a 4.0 defender. Would we expect them to be priced in theory if they are named in the final 25?

Up top or wide right pending on where Sancho goes. Surely Jesse L won't mess things up...

I think Sancho replaces Rashford on the left and Greenwood will play either CF (depending on Cavani's fitness) or definitely as RW.
Jesse is also an option for Ole I'm sure but maybe off the bench more.

Between Buendia & Nacho or Greenwood or Toney for me. It's a tough one!

Greenwood play mostly off the right, like Sancho. Could have Martial or Pogba off the left with Cavani up top.

Martial is nowhere close to starting right now IMO. Lingard is a bigger threat.

Depends on how he looks in training.
          Can play LW or ST.
Also have Lingard/Pogba on the LW to worry about.
Too much uncertainty at the moment

    Template problems

I’m considering going with Toney over nacho here but where would you spend the million ?

    Sanchez
    Shaw digne taa
    Buendia Raph Bruno salah
    Nacho Watkins Antonio

    4.0 veltman brownhill 4.0

I'd leave it as it is. If Nacho is getting regular mins he's a much better asset than Toney.

    Thoughts?

Would love Robertson but can't squeeze him in. I'm hoping Son could become Dele if he nails his spot.

    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw Digne
    Raphina Son Greenwood Salah
    Antonio Watkins DCL

Subs: Foster, White, Gibbs-White, Ait Nouri

Not sure who to pick from the below.

    A. Ayling
    B. Veltman
    C. Any other 4.5 defender?

    My current defence is

    White | TAA | Shaw | Coufa | ____

    Thanks

Ayling possibly more sure of starting.
Veltman possibly has the higher ceiling.
