Tsimikas hauls but Robertson return looms in Gameweek 3

We begin our more detailed Scout Notes of the Gameweek 3 action with a look at Liverpool’s win over Burnley.

For a briefer round-up of Saturday’s goings-on, check out our Scoreboard summary here.

LIVERPOOL 2-0 BURNLEY

  • Goals: Diogo Jota (£7.5m), Sadio Mane (£11.9m)
  • Assists: Kostas Tsimikas (£4.1m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5m)
  • Bonus: Alexander-Arnold x3, Tsimikas x2, Alisson (£6.0m)

ROBERTSON RETURNS – TSIMIKAS OUT?

The return to fitness of Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) likely spells bad news for owners of Kostas Tsimikas (£4.1m) but the budget Fantasy Premier League (FPL) defender at least signed off in style against Burnley on Saturday.

Robertson was among the substitutes as the Reds defeated Sean Dyche’s side and the serious money will be on a playing return for the Scot against Chelsea next weekend, given the calibre of opponent.

But Tsimikas did everything he asked of him and more against the Clarets, setting up Diogo Jota’s (£7.5m) opener in Robertson-esque fashion and leaving Anfield with an 11-point haul.

“Both were spectacular, two nice [assists]. They were defensively good, as well.” – Jurgen Klopp on his full-backs

Both players were in the wars late in the game, with Tsimikas hurting his shoulder shortly before being replaced and Alexander-Arnold seemingly limping at the full-time whistle – but there has been no word on any problem for either player, post-match.

LIVERPOOL’S DEFENCE

The hosts’ backline played a huge part in their victory.

Tsimikas and Alexander-Arnold both nabbed an assist and created a remarkable 11 chances between them, with the latter making some Joao Cancelo-esque (£6.0m) forays into more central areas as youngster Harvey Elliott (£5.5m) strayed wider; as evidenced in Alexander-Arnold’s pass for Sadio Mane‘s (£11.9m) strike.

Above: Trent Alexander-Arnold’s touch heatmap against Burnley

Alexander-Arnold averages 7.75 points per match over his last 12 appearances, stretching back to Gameweek 28 of last season.

As important was the partnership between Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) and Joel Matip (£5.5m) at centre-half, which grew ever more commanding as the game went on.

It wasn’t perfect, it should be said. Burnley, as Norwich did a week ago, did penetrate the Liverpool backline on a number of occasions, especially early in the first half. The Reds’ high line, which proved increasingly effective in catching Burnley offside, will be put to a much sterner test in Gameweek 3 by a pacier Chelsea attack.

But it’s two clean sheets in two for the Reds, who took nine Gameweeks to reach that total last season.

The return of Fabinho (£5.5m), absent for personal reasons this week, will surely only strengthen them further at the back.

Van Dijk’s long diagonal balls to the right flank were also the source of several Liverpool attacks, while the two centre-halves racked up a combined six efforts on goal from set-play situations – more reasons to be cheerful for the corner-taking Alexander-Arnold.

SALAH’S BURNLEY HOODOO

 1

Another game against Burnley and another blank for Mohamed Salah (£12.5m).

There wasn’t a great deal wrong with his performance, with a goal chalked off for a marginal offside, two goalbound efforts blocked by Burnley defenders with Nick Pope (£5.5m) beaten, and his 12 penalty box touches a game-high.

It was simply one of those days for the Egyptian, with fellow attackers Jota – again preferred to Roberto Firmino (£9.0m) through the middle – and Mane instead on target.

As for the Clarets, there was plenty of encouragement in an attacking sense with two big chances created and some ‘nearly moments’ besides – although a tough-looking schedule will surely deter FPL investment for now. Caught offside seven times, their last-line loitering will get more rewards against sides less adept at playing higher up than a van Dijk-led Liverpool.

Liverpool XI: Becker; Alexander-Arnold; Matip, van Dijk, Tsmikas (Gomez 90) Elliott, Henderson, Keita (Thiago 81); Salah, Jota (Firmino 81), Mane.

Burnley XI: Pope; Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Gudmundsson (Pieters 79), Brownhill, Cork, McNeil; Wood (Rodriguez 75), Barnes.

2 FTs and very little stands out as a solid move atm. Gonna use just 1 FT

    Considering:

    Ayling > Duffy
Tsimikas > Duffy/Livramento to bag the price rise
    Grealish > Greenwood

    That's about it.

That's a low bar for interesting but yeah frees up 0.5m and also covers GW4 better than Ayling's LIV with Brighton's bre fixture.

Ha, I guess interesting in the fact it's not something I had considered. I've got livramento and gilmour who are at least starting, so having two 4.0 defenders could be a set up

The 4.5 range has emerged as quite bare, but I think Ayling is very solid. Nailed, now brings threat and Leeds will collect some clean sheets over the med-long term. They often can look leaky in spells

Yep, Spurs and Brentford are the only options that spring up. I'd still have Ayling above them though. At least until we know that Dier is nailed.

It was Watford that stormed it defensively in the Champ and Brentford were relatively leaky, which leaves me with a bitter taste as somebody who went Bachmann over Raya! 🙂

He is perfectly fine. I wouldn't even think of this move if I had something else that was more obvious.

I think Grealish out could be the wise thing. He wasn't in the right attacking positions and the fixtures are mixed. If Greenwood is amazing I'm likely to do that switch.

Are we actually going to get conclusive info if salah will miss gw4 before the gw3 deadline?

Even if quarantine rules for red list countries remain elite sportsmen seem to have a way around it!

I'm tempted to drop salah for son gw3.....

The worry is that I ditch salah, he turns up for leeds gw4 and smashes it......thanks

Surely Toney is still a keeper for at least the next few GWs...

Brentford are looking good and Toney is getting chances. True, he's been off the mark a bit, but the signs are all there that his goals will come.

And he's great value at 6.5! What am I missing?

Nobody likes two blanks in a row plus majority are like,"if he can't score Vs Palace, when he will score"

      Plus Dominic scored again.

Don't think we can say he is a good value, yet.

Perhaps not to be fair. I always back how likely they look to score against previous points though (to an extent, of course).

Ings for example isn't getting much joy aside from his 2 goals, whereas Toney has been the opposite, but I'd always fancy the latter. Maybe that's slightly naive though...

Didn't watch v Palace but I did watch v Arsenal and while he delivered a good performance for the team, I wasn't convinced in terms of FPL potential, but seemed to be in the minority.

Was committed to him for 5 weeks no matter what but a triple change for -4 where he would become Dennis allowing for Tierney and DCL is my thinking now.

      It’s Watkins/Bamford-gate all over again

Every time those two went a game, or (heaven forbid!) two games without a return last season they were absolutely slated as championship strikers who have to go and aren’t up to scratch

Toney needs at least 5 games before starting to pass judgement, he can return in any/all of his next 3 - and if he hasn’t, then that GW6 fixture run is perfect to hop off

People either never learn -or have to learn the hard way - a little bit of patience is a massive virtue in FPL

Veltman can play as a centre back in a three. He's far better on the ball than Duffy and Potter wants to play out from the back (Duffy's lack of ability on the ball is why he was dropped in Potter's first season then loaned out to Celtic last year). Maybe Duffy has played his way in but personally I doubt it and I think he'll be dropped sooner or later.

The biggest issue with Livramento is that even if he starts, he is quite likely to get 0-1 pts. So I have doubts whether it is worth spending any transfers with that 4.0 position.

Can’t advocate swapping a 4m for another (unless on wildcard). Total waste of a transfer imo and white could be a play in a few weeks.
      Greenwood to Son needs 2.5m
Not for me but you could move Trent to Virgil to save 1m
Guessing Ings to Toney is a possibility soon

And based on that solid front 8 that’s leaves you with only defensive transfer options, if he had 1 FT I’d say save, with two get Duffy and set yourself up for a Son move when ready.

Having gone on about greenwood as the standout capt pick this week, I choked at the last min and went for the safe option of Salah capt. I wasn’t so fussed about the blank as he was quite involved and should have had at least a goal. But I should have backed myself and I will moving forwards - this is after all a game and we should trust our instincts to make it more fun. Now let’s hope for a hassenhuttl masterclass to ease my pain

Tsimi + Buendia to Benahrama and 4.5 def? And which 4.5, he has to play!

Tsimikas has to rise to 4.2 and Buendia can't drop, so would probably have to pull the trigger as soon as it gets possible (if it does, even)

    Team is
    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw Coufal Tsimikas Omo
    Salah Bruno Son Buendia
    Antonio Ings 4.5

As mentioned, 4.5 def is sparse as of yet.
But who are your top 5?

Lamptey and Veltman when fit both be top 5?
    Coady?
    Ayling?
    Dier?
    The Brentford lot?

    What are people's thoughts?

Debating bringing Coady and son in for Barnes and maybe Digne

    2ft were too from here?
    Sanchez
    TAA Shaw Digne Coufal
    Salah Bruno Barnes Jota
    Ings DCL

    Forster Amartey Brownhill Obafemi

Depending on how Barnes performs could be him and a defender out for son and cheap defender?

Worth noting Barnes has Norwich up next week.

Selling Barnes before Norwich is not for me. I'd rather downgrade Salah to Son. Barnes can go after Norwich if needed. Brace today and he is the one to get 😉

He is but Nuno is a defensive coach

Once he’s got a hold over the team I worry about the attacking threat. Especially for his price

Jimenez did all right in Nuno's team with seasons of 181 and 194 points -- and Son is classified as a mid which will increase his points.

Not the worst idea if planning to wildcard shortly after to bring him back

    Which one?

    A) Mahrez + Foney to 6.0ish + DCL

    B) Mahrez + Obafemi to 4.5/5.5 + DCL

In A I continue with 352. B I'll change to 343 and have a good 5 mid on my bench and keep my faith in Foney.

    Some surger advice please

... It's an 8 point hit but this could well be worth it:

    Tsimikas out for Trent Alexander-Arnold.
    Salah downgrade to Soucek.
    Mahrez to Raphinha.
    Saint-Maximin major upgrade to Lukaku.

Fortune the brave... Would you hit those changes?

It seems to center around getting Lukaku is, so depends if you want to gamble and get him in before he's proven to get points

True, but the spur is to switch up to TAA in the Liverpool defence.

He's a budget buster but looks to be well and truly back to his fluid best.

No Son, but quite like the look for next week and would be saving a FT:

    Sanchez,
    TAA, Shaw, Duffy
    Bruno, Salah, Barnes, Greenwood, Benrahma
    Ings, Antonio

    Steele, Ayling, White, Scarlett

    Anything obvious I’m missing?

Given Everton’s aerial threat and Brighton’s two wins from two, I don’t think he’s guaranteed to come straight back in unless at RWB

I dont think the Brighton manager sees Duffy as a 4.0 defender, he just scored recently and got a clean sheet, too difficult to be benched.

With GW3 being a big game for LFC, sure, every chance Tsmikas is dropped, but what chance he'll play? The international break follows and wouldn't there be a fear within the club that Andy gets crocked again and misses more?
Brandon Williams at Norwich might be a good swap. If it's ever announced.

      Considering it myself.

It's hard to bet against Salah over a season and Chelsea fixtures are tough. But I can see them winning them and sitting pretty at the top. Salah had his cursed spell last season and could splutter a bit again.

Chelsea wil just get stronger over the next few weeks, if they avoid injuries of course.
