FPL player availability in Gameweek 4 still uncertain despite clubs’ red-list stance

Premier League clubs announced on Tuesday evening that they have decided not to release players for international matches played in red-list countries in the September break.

That’s something that, of course, affects Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

Previously we discussed the worst-case scenario, highlighting the players who would be at risk of missing Gameweeks 4 and 5 (and potentially others after future international breaks) as a result of their upcoming involvement for their home nations.

These FPL assets included Mohamed Salah (£12.6m), Raphinha (£6.5m) and Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m).

Yesterday’s announcement from 20 top-flight teams seemingly quells fears on that front but this is surely not the last we’ll hear on the issue.

And, in a further, as-yet-unconfirmed twist, the Athletic report that…

Players would be banned from playing for their clubs for the international window, which runs until September 9, plus a further five days.

This would exclude them from the games on the weekend of September 11 and 12.

They would also risk further disciplinary action from FIFA.

The Premier League clubs also protested against FIFA’s decision to extend the international window in South America by two days in September and October, which would mean a belated return ahead of Gameweeks 4 and 8 for a number of key FPL players representing Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile and Paraguay – if they are allowed to make the trip, of course.

Tuesday’s statement read as follows:

Premier League clubs have today reluctantly but unanimously decided not to release players for international matches played in red-list countries next month.

The clubs’ decision, which is strongly supported by the Premier League, will apply to nearly 60 players from 19 Premier League clubs who are due to travel to 26 red-list countries in the September international window.

This follows FIFA’s current position not to extend its temporary release exception for players required to quarantine on their return from international duty.

Extensive discussions have taken place with both The FA and the Government to find a solution, but due to ongoing public health concerns relating to incoming travellers from red-list countries, no exemption has been granted.

If required to quarantine on return from red list countries, not only would players’ welfare and fitness be significantly impacted, but they would also be unavailable to prepare for and play in two Premier League match rounds, a UEFA club competition matchday and the third round of the EFL Cup.

This period takes into consideration 10 days of hotel quarantine on return to England but does not include any additional time that would be required for players to regain match fitness.

Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said: “Premier League clubs have always supported their players’ desires to represent their countries – this is a matter of pride for all concerned. However, clubs have reluctantly but rightly come to the conclusion that it would be entirely unreasonable to release players under these new circumstances.

“Quarantine requirements mean that players’ welfare and fitness will be significantly impacted. We understand the challenges that exist in the international match calendar and remain open to workable solutions.”

Clubs also discussed their dissatisfaction with FIFA’s decision to extend CONMEBOL’s international window by two days in September and October from nine to 11 days.

This places additional international obligations on players from that region, to the detriment of their availability to represent their clubs.

FIFA was urged to work with all stakeholders to ensure an agreeable conclusion can be reached on the issue.

It's still a mess. Someone will have to compromise. As it stands, clubs don't release their players and in response FIFA bans those players with representing their countries. So Brazil and Argentina continue World Cup qualifiers with something like Olympic squads. No one wins in this situation.

Because if players are unavailable for play for country, even if they are in England they aren’t allowed to play for their club. Otherwise nobody would be released

Salah has better any time goal scorer odds on Bet365 than ALL of the popular captain choices this week (Son, Bruno, Antonio).

I think they are just cautious early odds at the moment with them on this market - he's evens on B365, but 13/8 on Skybet, generally around 6/4 elsewhere

I prob wouldnt buy him for one game, but I've used my transfers elsewhere & am sticking with mahrez for at least 1 more. I do think city will score 3-4.

    Digne TAA Coufal Shaw Amartey
    Salah bruno jota greenwood brownhill
    Ings antonio scarlett

    2ft 0 itb?

Jota to Benrahma might be senaible, but Liverpool have 3/4 easy fixtures next. Any other ideas?

Morning horse! Running different transfer scenarios in my head like most of the time. How are you?

    2FT and 0.0 ITB

    Sanchez
    TAA. Shaw. Coufal
    Salah. Bruno. Barnes. ESR
    Ings. Antonio. Wilson

    (Foster, Ayling,White, Gilmour)

ESR stinking up my team, but can't think of an easy way to improve without losing Barnes, who I'd like to keep for Norwich...

    Any suggestions welcome 🙂

White to Livramento might free up funds

Is the general consensus WC for GW7 and load up on Chelsea?

0.5M spare for the below although a lot can change between now and GW7!

    Sanchez
    TAA, Dias, Rudiger
    Fernandes, Raphinha, Mount, Benrahma
    Lukaku, DCL, Antonio

    (Foster, Ayling, Livramento, Gilmour)

    Cheers

What are people doing re Chelsea Defenders. I suspect Chilwell back as has pace to deal with TAA and Salah when wide, and possibly Azpilicueta as other wing back as positional sense better than James. Will wait till GW7 I think when fixtures get easier, and James becomes a regular.

Chilwell hasn't played a minute yet.

I think we need to watch at least 2 more games of Chelsea in order to get some solid conclusions. Until then, watch and observe imo. Cheers!

Ignoring them until the fixtures get better from GW7 onwards as will have more info by then.

Tricky one. Very tempted by chilwell & james double up when i WC, but still weighing the risk. Wouldn't do it right before liverpool anyway so at least one more game to wait & see. Otherwise maybe chilwell & rudiger/christensen

Should I spend my last FT on Jota to Raphinha switch?
I already used the first one for Duffy instead of White.
This Jota to Raph switch also frees up funds to get Lukaku.
    What do you think?

Will Raphina definitely be available for GW4 given these extra Brazil fixtures ?

In which case I would avoid for now, plenty of decent options at that price range.

Who do we think is the most dispensable out of Bruno & Salah to spread funds elsewhere ?

I can see captaining a Man Utd player only in GW4 and Greenwood or Pogba seem value alternatives to Bruno.

Removing Salah I think is more tricky as would want a Liverpool Captain in GW5 & GW6. I guess Jota is the value alternative if he plays.

After Newcastle in GW4 I can't see myself captaining Bruno over Salah/Lukaku until GW15 so will probably sell for Pogba and spread funds elsewhere

Yep I think that’s a good plan. Bruno I think can at least be partly covered by other lower value players, I don’t think the same is true for Salah.
