FPL player availability in Gameweek 4 still uncertain despite clubs’ red-list stance

Premier League clubs announced on Tuesday evening that they have decided not to release players for international matches played in red-list countries in the September break.

That’s something that, of course, affects Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

Previously we discussed the worst-case scenario, highlighting the players who would be at risk of missing Gameweeks 4 and 5 (and potentially others after future international breaks) as a result of their upcoming involvement for their home nations.

These FPL assets included Mohamed Salah (£12.6m), Raphinha (£6.5m) and Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m).

Yesterday’s announcement from 20 top-flight teams seemingly quells fears on that front but this is surely not the last we’ll hear on the issue.

And, in a further, as-yet-unconfirmed twist, the Athletic report that…

Players would be banned from playing for their clubs for the international window, which runs until September 9, plus a further five days.

This would exclude them from the games on the weekend of September 11 and 12.

They would also risk further disciplinary action from FIFA.

The Premier League clubs also protested against FIFA’s decision to extend the international window in South America by two days in September and October, which would mean a belated return ahead of Gameweeks 4 and 8 for a number of key FPL players representing Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile and Paraguay – if they are allowed to make the trip, of course.

Tuesday’s statement read as follows:

Premier League clubs have today reluctantly but unanimously decided not to release players for international matches played in red-list countries next month.

The clubs’ decision, which is strongly supported by the Premier League, will apply to nearly 60 players from 19 Premier League clubs who are due to travel to 26 red-list countries in the September international window.

This follows FIFA’s current position not to extend its temporary release exception for players required to quarantine on their return from international duty.

Extensive discussions have taken place with both The FA and the Government to find a solution, but due to ongoing public health concerns relating to incoming travellers from red-list countries, no exemption has been granted.

If required to quarantine on return from red list countries, not only would players’ welfare and fitness be significantly impacted, but they would also be unavailable to prepare for and play in two Premier League match rounds, a UEFA club competition matchday and the third round of the EFL Cup.

This period takes into consideration 10 days of hotel quarantine on return to England but does not include any additional time that would be required for players to regain match fitness.

Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said: “Premier League clubs have always supported their players’ desires to represent their countries – this is a matter of pride for all concerned. However, clubs have reluctantly but rightly come to the conclusion that it would be entirely unreasonable to release players under these new circumstances.

“Quarantine requirements mean that players’ welfare and fitness will be significantly impacted. We understand the challenges that exist in the international match calendar and remain open to workable solutions.”

Clubs also discussed their dissatisfaction with FIFA’s decision to extend CONMEBOL’s international window by two days in September and October from nine to 11 days.

This places additional international obligations on players from that region, to the detriment of their availability to represent their clubs.

FIFA was urged to work with all stakeholders to ensure an agreeable conclusion can be reached on the issue.

Use the FT on Tsimikas as he’s a transfer waiting to happen anyway and save the other FT. With all the uncertainty concerning GW4 it will be nice to have 2 FT.

Tsimikas out to bank that 0.1 before drop. Barnes could be replaced with Raphina for example has good fixtures

    Which one?

    1) Bruno, Greenwood
    2) Son, Lukaku (No United attackers)

I think over a season Son and Lukaku edge it but Bruno is a good captain option.

Thoughts on Pereira as a pick?

With the Perez suspension, I think he could be pushed further forward either on the right of a 4231 or as a RWB if Rodgers decides to go with two strikers in a 352.

With Leicester not looking that dominate at the back, he's a luxury at 5.5M I feel. City fixture looming.

I'd get Coufal or Livramento value vs. price.

Maybe. I have White vs NOR in GW4 so would bench him for the City fixture. Prefer Leicesters fixtures to West Hams up to GW6 which is the latest i'll be wildcarding.

It does depend on Leicester clicking into gear, but I think they will, and I reckon he's a very decent 'under the radar' option.

Is it that much of a mess? Three of the four goals they conceded vs West Ham came when they were down to ten men. Vestergaard potentially to come back in. Surely a decent option vs nor, bha, BUR.

If he stays, I don't see Spurs doing much more business this window.

Also, City seemed resigned about it signing Grealish for that amount.

Surely they cannot sign him and Grealish without breaching FFP.

Think it's Chelsea's title to lose.

That is damn sexy! (With the obvious - Bruno could... blah blah blah)
I personally prefer G'wood to Pogba - but both are good options.
I'd switch Amartey to Livra though. Don't see Amartey getting many more mins - and if he does, I don't see Leicester keeping many CSs!

If you don't like Livra, BWilliams could be a shout, especially as Norwich's fixtures take a significant upturn from GW5 onwards.

Cheers, sound advice. Yeah toying with Greenwood but easy switch between him and Pogba, if Pogba stops playing as high up or goes missing.
Will be adjusting the defence I think! Before this weekend I thought Southampton would be shipping more goals…

Anyone figured out Mark's transfers? We know he brought in Lukaku and sold Toney, Mahrez and Torres. Needed 4.5m (had 0.5 in bank) to fund Lukaku, so the mids have to be 4.5 and 7, 5 and 6.5, 5.5 and 6 or 2 5.5's. The first is unlikely given he already has a 4.5 forward. 2nd seems unlikely as I can't see any viable mids at 5 that he'd want (even though I know he'd really want Raphina) so thinking it has to be the last 2. Mbuemo and Sarr seem like they could very well be the picks. Possibly ESR though.

Thoughts? 1FT 0.0 itb. Planning Ings for DCL hopefully next week. Would involve saving or transferring Mahrez/Barnes out for cheaper option - I hope they both play as I have a weak bench.

    Sanchez (4.0)
    TAA, Shaw, Amartey, (Livramento, Manquillo)
    Mahrez, Barnes, Salah, Bruno, Benrahma
    Ings, Antonio, (Obafemi)

Similar issue. In tempted to get rid of Mahrez, but think having flexibility of options & 2ft over international break could be good.

You don't want to do Mahrez to Raphina & then realise you'd actually like another striker next week.

      1. Rbyrne95

Yeah. I like to imagine that Mahrez would at least play this gameweek.

I've already used 1FT (got 1 left) to get in Livramento for Tsimikas so I wouldn't have 2x free transfers for next gameweek would I? my brains gone atm.

Hopefully you don't get any injuries/covid quarantine issues after IB then once you've got 2 you'll have enough to move around without a WC. Even if you end up running with 10 men this week (which for this GW you could get away with) you've got enough strong players to carry you through, especially with the amount of hits most others will be taking.

it's more like a -2 so a CS will actually be more points than if i did nothing. and i think spurs have a pretty good chance of not conceding.

          0 points -4 hit = -4 starting base.

Starter points is 2 so yeah -2, but you're still negative. You need something on top of the start, so you need a guaranteed CS.

Spurs have conceded a lot of shots, maybe look at Leicester? They've got Norwich.

I think I’m gonna hold Tsimi to GW5. Robbie will have had 2 games for Liverpool and possibly 3 for Scotland by then. Anything can happen. If he’s still going strong then I will do Tsimi > Williams for Norwich’s fixture swing (assuming he’s nailed by then)

Very much wanting to do Salah to Son this week, I just feel like Son will outscore Salah. GW4 is the problem though, again Son could match or do better than Salah in gw4. It just feels like Salah might punish me. Thoughts?

Thinking Bruno (C) this week. Rarely blanks twice in a row. And United need to bounce back.

Save some more money and get a decent third striker.

Even though he will naturally do his best, is this going to affect him somehow mentally. Even if he does want to fo his best some subconscious thinking might affect him.
