FPL player availability in Gameweek 4 still uncertain despite clubs’ red-list stance

Premier League clubs announced on Tuesday evening that they have decided not to release players for international matches played in red-list countries in the September break.

That’s something that, of course, affects Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

Previously we discussed the worst-case scenario, highlighting the players who would be at risk of missing Gameweeks 4 and 5 (and potentially others after future international breaks) as a result of their upcoming involvement for their home nations.

These FPL assets included Mohamed Salah (£12.6m), Raphinha (£6.5m) and Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m).

Yesterday’s announcement from 20 top-flight teams seemingly quells fears on that front but this is surely not the last we’ll hear on the issue.

And, in a further, as-yet-unconfirmed twist, the Athletic report that…

Players would be banned from playing for their clubs for the international window, which runs until September 9, plus a further five days.

This would exclude them from the games on the weekend of September 11 and 12.

They would also risk further disciplinary action from FIFA.

The Premier League clubs also protested against FIFA’s decision to extend the international window in South America by two days in September and October, which would mean a belated return ahead of Gameweeks 4 and 8 for a number of key FPL players representing Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile and Paraguay – if they are allowed to make the trip, of course.

Tuesday’s statement read as follows:

Premier League clubs have today reluctantly but unanimously decided not to release players for international matches played in red-list countries next month.

The clubs’ decision, which is strongly supported by the Premier League, will apply to nearly 60 players from 19 Premier League clubs who are due to travel to 26 red-list countries in the September international window.

This follows FIFA’s current position not to extend its temporary release exception for players required to quarantine on their return from international duty.

Extensive discussions have taken place with both The FA and the Government to find a solution, but due to ongoing public health concerns relating to incoming travellers from red-list countries, no exemption has been granted.

If required to quarantine on return from red list countries, not only would players’ welfare and fitness be significantly impacted, but they would also be unavailable to prepare for and play in two Premier League match rounds, a UEFA club competition matchday and the third round of the EFL Cup.

This period takes into consideration 10 days of hotel quarantine on return to England but does not include any additional time that would be required for players to regain match fitness.

Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said: “Premier League clubs have always supported their players’ desires to represent their countries – this is a matter of pride for all concerned. However, clubs have reluctantly but rightly come to the conclusion that it would be entirely unreasonable to release players under these new circumstances.

“Quarantine requirements mean that players’ welfare and fitness will be significantly impacted. We understand the challenges that exist in the international match calendar and remain open to workable solutions.”

Clubs also discussed their dissatisfaction with FIFA’s decision to extend CONMEBOL’s international window by two days in September and October from nine to 11 days.

This places additional international obligations on players from that region, to the detriment of their availability to represent their clubs.

FIFA was urged to work with all stakeholders to ensure an agreeable conclusion can be reached on the issue.

You could look at his touches though, I suppose - how many count for anything right now is certainly debatable.

If he whallops one past Utd his stock looks good - very tempted myself, early doors.

What's going on with fplstats? Could have sworn I looked this morning and James was around +100 and a few others like Lukaku about +97/98. The highest now is Amartey at +94. I know there are adjustments for WCs but I thought most of those happened overnight once rises and falls have occurred.

    Kane perfect scenario:
    - Ings scores big vs. Brentford
    - Ings rises by 0.1
    - Kane quiet cameo vs. Watford
    - Kane(C) straight in for Ings with exact cash

I would think so. They missed a proper number 9 last season, thats why they were trying out Werner and Havertz. Think he is as nailed as you'd get in that Chelsea squad.

I think Kane staying lessens his appeal.

Nuno is a defensive manager and Kane would have had loads of chances playing for CIty.

Don't get me wrong. It's good for the league he's staying at Spurs but it makes him a less exciting fpl asset imo.

    1. GreennRed
      • 12 Years

They'll be less attacking than City definitely. Nuno's first season in PL was far from defensive and Jimenez did great for him. City have done well without a 9 last season and while Aguero was injured. We'll have to wait and see how Spurs perform. Jack Grealish says hello 😉

Definitely lessens it especially with Son as an option at Spurs that is as nailed as Kane for 4/5 of the price. Won't cover everything Kane does of course but he's exceptional. Will be very interesting to see what City do now. Make a desperate last-minute attempt to sign someone from abroad or just try work with what they have?

Just seen Utd's fixtures - they have got maybe the 8 toughest teams in the league to play within 10 games from wk 5! Surely many will lose Bruno for this run. And everyone will definately want him for after this run when it flips!

Basically Chelsea and City's fixtures turn good just as United's turn bad. That's why many are looking to wildcard GW7 or thereabouts.

I think it'd be a bit mad to lose him just because of fixtures unless you're buying someone in better form than him, not because you think so-called easier fixtures will improve their form.

The selected Champion each week will have a budget of 83m to select 11 players but outside of that standard FPL rules apply - you need to use a normal FPL formation and with a limit of 3 players from a team. And remember to select a captain and vice-captain.

If you're interested in applying, email me at will@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk with the subject heading "Community Picks". Include your FFS username and FPL Team ID and I’ll select a Champion at random from the entrants for Gameweek 3.

The Champion will be picked Thursday evening, so make sure to enter by then! The Champion then has until 1pm Friday lunchtime to send in their team, but I’ll work with you to allow tweaks right up to the deadline (in case of injuries announced in the press conferences).

Last week both the Scout Picks and Community Champion Jairzinho had returns from 10 of their 11 players, but it was the Scout Picks who edged it by 80 points to 72. Could you do better this week?

GW3. 2 free transfers What to do?

A: Use 1 free and then have 2 after International Break for GW4
B: Use both transfers to maximize GW3
    C: Save both transfers

Very team dependent - definitely not C though!

Got 2.9ITB to get a Tsimi replacement... what do we think of Pereira as an option? (I have the cover to bench him vs Man city GW4)

Or should I save more cash and go for Ayling/Dier ?

Lads, please help...What's your thoughts on swapping:

    Trent, Tsimikas, Grealish, Toney

    To...

    Alonso, Duffy, Gilmor, Kane

    Team would look like this...

    Sanchez

    Alonso, Duffy, Coady, Shaw

    Salah, Bruno, Benrahma

    Kane, Ings, Antonio

    Subs: Bachmann, Gilmor, Bissoma, Livramento

    Thanks.

Never if it's for a -8. If you're on a WC then still probably not...

No. Looks like you're taking hits just to get Kane. Arguably Grealish is a better pick without having to share City's attacking returns with Kane. Debatable how long Alonso will be nailed on for, Chilwell will play against better attacks. Maybe give Tony another GW and just go Tsimikas to Shane.

I wouldn’t do those moves even for free.

Thanks lads, I'll stick with what I have - Forcing Kane into my team seems like a bad idea!!

which 5.5 arsenal midfielder looks more attractive as a replacement for Mahrez from GW4 (allowing Ings>Kane)?

    A) Odegaard
    B) Smith-Rowe

I'd rather go for Gray I think

      Neither

Gray, Doucoure or Mbuemo at the price.

If you can stretch to 6m then Gross is very good option

The cool kids have 0.1 more than I do. Darn it!

Smith-Rowe is 5.4 not 5.5, just in case that is relevant.

So Kane is going to continue being a Spud.

Anyone think there might be a late twist in this saga? £125m for Kane is a pretty amazing offer, Levy wont get that again.

He doesn't need it. Stadium is built now and cash starting to roll in. He'll be very hard to replace especially at such short notice.

Don't think so. He's already sat out one game, began his reintroduction to the first team against Wolves and will be back fully starting at the weekend I'd imagine.

Kept Gundo last week, keeping Barnes this week. Patience eventually wins right? Right???? 🙁

Already have Greenwood and Benny so would be Raph or Sarr or thereabouts

Either look better now than Barnes who's not playing full games. Sarr looks Watford's biggest threat which can be good even if the club aren't brilliant.

I'm doing the same. One more game for Barnes. It could come good.

As a Barnes seller, I genuinely wish you luck for holding. He has just been so poor that I wasn’t willing to give him the Norwich match.
