FPL player availability in Gameweek 4 still uncertain despite clubs’ red-list stance

Premier League clubs announced on Tuesday evening that they have decided not to release players for international matches played in red-list countries in the September break.

That’s something that, of course, affects Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

Previously we discussed the worst-case scenario, highlighting the players who would be at risk of missing Gameweeks 4 and 5 (and potentially others after future international breaks) as a result of their upcoming involvement for their home nations.

These FPL assets included Mohamed Salah (£12.6m), Raphinha (£6.5m) and Emiliano Martinez (£5.5m).

Yesterday’s announcement from 20 top-flight teams seemingly quells fears on that front but this is surely not the last we’ll hear on the issue.

And, in a further, as-yet-unconfirmed twist, the Athletic report that…

Players would be banned from playing for their clubs for the international window, which runs until September 9, plus a further five days.

This would exclude them from the games on the weekend of September 11 and 12.

They would also risk further disciplinary action from FIFA.

The Premier League clubs also protested against FIFA’s decision to extend the international window in South America by two days in September and October, which would mean a belated return ahead of Gameweeks 4 and 8 for a number of key FPL players representing Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile and Paraguay – if they are allowed to make the trip, of course.

Tuesday’s statement read as follows:

Premier League clubs have today reluctantly but unanimously decided not to release players for international matches played in red-list countries next month.

The clubs’ decision, which is strongly supported by the Premier League, will apply to nearly 60 players from 19 Premier League clubs who are due to travel to 26 red-list countries in the September international window.

This follows FIFA’s current position not to extend its temporary release exception for players required to quarantine on their return from international duty.

Extensive discussions have taken place with both The FA and the Government to find a solution, but due to ongoing public health concerns relating to incoming travellers from red-list countries, no exemption has been granted.

If required to quarantine on return from red list countries, not only would players’ welfare and fitness be significantly impacted, but they would also be unavailable to prepare for and play in two Premier League match rounds, a UEFA club competition matchday and the third round of the EFL Cup.

This period takes into consideration 10 days of hotel quarantine on return to England but does not include any additional time that would be required for players to regain match fitness.

Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said: “Premier League clubs have always supported their players’ desires to represent their countries – this is a matter of pride for all concerned. However, clubs have reluctantly but rightly come to the conclusion that it would be entirely unreasonable to release players under these new circumstances.

“Quarantine requirements mean that players’ welfare and fitness will be significantly impacted. We understand the challenges that exist in the international match calendar and remain open to workable solutions.”

Clubs also discussed their dissatisfaction with FIFA’s decision to extend CONMEBOL’s international window by two days in September and October from nine to 11 days.

This places additional international obligations on players from that region, to the detriment of their availability to represent their clubs.

FIFA was urged to work with all stakeholders to ensure an agreeable conclusion can be reached on the issue.

Tough, Livramento could well get a return some time soon, I'd doubt a clean sheet but Newcastle are hard to predict. James has a tough fixture but he's at probably the best defence in the league and Kante is back to further protect them. He'll also be on the same flank where Robertson will be making his return and might be a tad rusty. I'd go James I think.

James I have Chelsea bias 🙂
Tuchel has kept clean sheets against City, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Mourinho, the list goes on.
James offers more attacking threat then Livramento & Southampton away are unlikely to keep a clean sheet anyway IMO.
If you pay £5.5 arguably under priced for James, I think you play him irrespective of opposition. He's still got just as much chance of a clean sheet & a higher ceiling with his assist / goal / bonus threat.

both transfers are used so will have to wait for next week, but yeah Barnes is going out after Norwich. Tsimi is also on the chopping block but he can wait a little bit, just as Ings

I went an used 1 of my transfers for Benrahma. I kind of want to save the other one to then have 2 after I-break.

Would this team be enough for GW3? Or should I use the other one as well?

    B: Use the other one

Like most this week, I'm torn on who to Captain this week. So I decided to check the anytime goal scorer odds to get a better feel for the market.

A few thoughts that came to mind...
    1) Captain Son/Kane if you have them
    2) Bamford surprisingly high up the list
    3) Wilson could be an under the radar differential
    4) Antonio is a little lower than I anticipated (behind Fernandes for example who obviously gets extra points for goals/ clean sheet)
    5) Bookies can't pick who is going to score for City so gave all attacking options the same odds

    Any Time Scorer Odds
    Kane 0.80
    Son 1.05
    Iheanacho 1.20
    Bamford 1.20
    Wilson 1.30
    Vardy 1.30
    Daka 1.30
    Fernandes 1.30
    Antonio 1.38
    Torres 1.40
    Jesus 1.40
    Gundogan 1.40
    Sterling 1.40
    Mahrez 1.40
    Wood 1.40
    KDB 1.50
    Ings 1.50
    Lukaku 1.50
    Toney 1.63
    Salah 1.63
    DCL 1.75
    Grealish 1.80
    Barnes 1.80

I pulled them from the bookies app I have downloaded. Within each match there is a 'Goalscorers' section which provides odds for anytime goalscorer

I honestly wouldn't place too much emphasis on betting odds, they often don't really take into account form or the fixtures themselves to enough of a degree. For example Kane has only played about 20 mins so far this season and is more than doubly likely to score than DCL who has form. Iheanacho more likely to score than Vardy who has played two full games and is against the type of teams that he likes to play. Antonio who's scored 3 in 2 with a lower chance of scoring against a team as poor-looking as Palace than Fernandes who is up against a team that has only conceded 2 goals so far and that for the most part looks quite organised and likes to have a lot of the ball?

I know odds are calculated on the basis of whether these players start the match or not but Zinchenko with one bookies is at lower odds to score than Aubameyang and Lacazette this week. Don't place too much hope on it.

Denise Coates in her studio flat struggling to make ends meet.

0.80 isn't more than doubly more likely to score than 1.75 either.

Where did Grealish play for City v Norwich? Various reports around his signings said he would play centre mid, out wide in a front 3, false 9. So God knows but definitely attacking and probably looking as nailed on as De Bruyne. He's been great the past two seasons and no Kane make him like a steal for 8m.

He didn't play up front, he was LW. Torres was false 9.

He played AM the game before, so still uncertain where he will play mostly.

Well, yes there's a certain fluid total football thing for sure. But he was very clearly on left for most of game and Jesus on the right. I was there and it didn't change much. Just had a look at his heatmap for the game and that confirms it.

Hello good people, need some advice for my team selection. Here it is currently:
    Sanchez (gk)
    Trent/shaw/Ayling
    Salah/bruno/mahrez/benrahma
    C.wilson/toney/Antonio
    Bench: green, tsimikas,livramento, Gilmour
I have 2 ft and 0.5 itb. Right now considering mahrez to either raphinha or greenwood and maybe toney to dcl. Don't mind keeping toney for one more week though. Please share your thoughts!
